Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Dragon Warrior III 'Flight of Destiny' Another soft and melodic yet playful bit of music from our resident electronic orchestra conductor, Russell Cox. It's always fantastically dramatic with this guy, isn't it? A beautiful mix of strings, brass, and wind instruments, topped of with a piano like a cherry on a cream pie. But of course you must have a taste for classical to get anything out of this. Try it just to see. Stunningly beautiful piece of work, Russell Cox.
  2. Chrono Cross 'Just Chill' This, to me, is musical excellence. The Pancake Chef has everything so well balanced in this piece it’s like a taste of perfection. Having the drums panned to the left, and the bass balancing to the right creates a very interesting environment for this mix. Excellent work Mr. Pancake Chef.
  3. Donkey Kong Country 'Ambient Gemini' As the title suggests, this song is quite ambient. Delayed synthy flute starts this off. We've got a tomish kick in the right ear, some little hats in the centre, two sets of synth strings to the left, delayed piano and a couple of other lead synths. The delay in this track is panned to the opposite ear, so you hear the copy on the other side and it makes for quite a good atmosphere. You'll also notice a few ambient sounds here and there. I really don't like the kick in the right ear though - it really feels off balance. Everything else is quite well done, with a generous amount of reverb on some of the instruments and some good mixing of each individual track. Nice stuff.
  4. Wild Arms 'Adlehyde Castle Flow' Smooth and blissful. A nice mix. A great game. Very enjoyable.
  5. NiGHTS into dreams... 'Merry Little Christmas' This is a very light, very Christmassy piece. It’s too bad its late spring, because I’m sure I could give this a much better review on December 24th. But I will say that it does put me in the mood for some eggnog, regardless of what time of year it is. Excellent work, Dale North, keep it up.
  6. Final Fantasy VII 'Fighting (7/8 Jazz Spiritual)' This is a really nice piece of work, although I can’t say I’d like to listen to a lot of this genre, this mix is well done. Except, what gets at my nerves at the back of my spin, is when people put vocals in a mix, spoken word, lyrical, sung, or otherwise, and they are not audible enough to understand. I’m repeating this mix over and over trying to get what is being said, but I can’t make sense of it. Either make it audible, or leave it out, because it’s a major annoyance. Good stuff, Lau, just pump up the volume on your mic some.
  7. GoldenEye 007 'Controlled Jazz' Minimalistic jazz of the classic Bond theme and Mustin on sax? sounds like a winner to me, and my ears agree.
  8. Chrono Trigger 'The New Zeal' Sounds damn good for a tracker! Of course the music itself is good. Doesn't do anything revolutionary, but who says it has to? A good listen.
  9. OutRun 'Passing Breeze ('97 BIT Offcut Mix)' Passing Breeze has probably always been my favorite Out Run music selection. It's also the favorite of Hiro, who composed the music for Out Run. Chris Abbott has taken that theme and made all the instruments sound really nice and smooth. Not a short song by any stretch, but that's a good thing since it is a good mix of a good song. It seems a bit more calm than the original version due to a slightly slower tempo, but not too much slower to be significant. Chris hasn't changed anything at all melody-wise, save for the cool ending, so if you've played Out Run before then you pretty much know you're getting a nicer sounding version of that.
  10. Paperboy 'Peaperboayh' Ah, Paperboy. I liked this game for about 20 minutes. This is a cool mix, but of course I don't recognize it from the game. Sounds kind of "house" at times, if that is a legitimate description. Not a whole lot of variety here, but worth a download if you like "Beastie Boys" style percussion.
  11. Phantasy Star III 'Legacy' When there is an arrangement from Phantasy Star 3, this is the track that usually gets the attention. But that's because most people never get past the title screen, which this theme is based on. There is lots of other good music in PS3, don't get me wrong. Anyway djp has taken the title theme and made it sound like it would have if it ever came out for the Sega CD (re: nice and clean). Considering that this is one of djp's early efforts, it does impress. I'd love to see what he could do with this tune on his current hardware/software setup.
