Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes)

Round 32: Chrono Trigger - Tyrano Lair

250?cb=20080705191436

There's this little-known obscure Japanese game called Chrono Trigger, it has some decent songs in it and I'd like to pick "Tyrano's Lair" from there. I'm surprised it has no ReMixes on OCR (I'm not joking about that last bit). I remember what made this track particularly atmospheric in the game, was that it played continuously in the Lair, without the battle music interrupting it for fights.

MISSION STATEMENT

The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required.

MnP Instructions/Guidelines

1. Covers and Sound Upgrades are permitted.

2. Most or all of the source notes must be present (but not necessarily in the exact same order), secondly the mood (energy, pacing, feelings being conveyed etc) should also be retained. For example, a source tune that is fast-paced and energetic that's remixed into a mellow/chill-out theme would be a hard sell.

3. If you decide to do a genre swap (i.e. symphonic to techno), make sure that the conditions of #2 are met.

4. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max).

5. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry.

6. All competitors and voters must adhere to the rules stated within: Competition Code and Conduct

MISC/TIPS

- When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make ppl's lives easier.

- In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

- Certain sad or moody source tunes don't have drums or percussion for a reason. So keeping it that way may be the easiest way to retain much of the original feel, such as

Count me in. With out the Meddling Metal Maven evotalo, victory is all but assured MuWaHaHaHaHaHAHA!!!!! Seriously though evktalo this is a choice cuts. Fun Fact: Nobuo Uematsu did this one when yasunori mitsuda put himself in the hospital with an ulcer, due to working too much. Does anyone else hear the connection to Kuja's Theme?...just curious I feel the 2 tracks are very similar...

YES I hear that Kuja theme in there, thought I was crazy - glad to know that I'm not 100% nuts :nicework:

Also, didn't know that Nobuo swapped in for Yasunori...ulcers suck lol

I didn't know the story! I know Uematsu did some tracks for the OST and I recalled this might have been one of them. And yeah, I too thought that the themes have similarities when I got to work with the Kuja theme in Final Fantasy Crystal Clash compo.

I might do a bonus track if I feel crazy enough, I got some ideas already.

I'm afraid I have to chicken out, my schedule doesn't allow to work on my track. Also the midi didn't work for me that well (it missed quite a bit of the vibe here and I tend to do my own transcription but don't have time for it...). Better luck next time.

Anyway, good to hear that Yoshi's track is done, looking forward to the final tracks. Good luck all!

Ahh np, the MIDI was tricky for me to figure out too. It turns out that some of the tracks actually change instruments halfway through...I've never seen that before ever lol. Didn't even know it was possible.

Yes I have a sauce account and the MP3 ready.

Okay, don't forget that the due-date is tomorrow :P

That was no problem for me, tho I did have to do a lot of cleanup. I guess I was pretty disappointed and opinionated on what the midi should sound like, and it failed to deliver :) I mean, just compare the bass line int the second part, the one in the orginal was sooo much better.

I guess never using MIDI as your starting point spoils you a bit ;)

Sorry, I didn't double-check the MIDI since playing MIDIs doesn't really work on my machine. I'll make more effort the next time, since it's no fun hearing it wasn't good to work with (and not accurate).

I too do have trouble using MIDIs as starting point, there seems to just be no life in them if you just slap some sounds on the notation, whereas if you start from scratch you can make the instrument have character/soul/whatever as you go. Maybe it's not just having a not-so-MIDI-file-friendly DAW. Sometimes it goes alright though, and faster than transcribing by ear.

^ Basically this :)

No apologies needed from my end. I can imagine people needing/wanting a MIDI as a starting point, it's just not the way I like to work.
