Chrono Trigger - Secret of the Forest - Soundscape Cover

Recommended Posts

Hi! I would love some feedback on my cover of "Secret of the Forest" from Chrono Trigger. Specifically, I'm looking for feedback on EQ, soundscape, production, etc. Basically anything other than the arrangement. Arrangement feedback is welcome, but I'm unlikely to do a major rewrite at this point.  I know I'm missing the original percussion parts and I'll work those into the next version. Percussion has been added. I've added a combination of forest sounds to fill out the soundscape. Thanks!

Soundscape feels veeery empty overall. Especially because this is an orchestra arrangement. You need to add some more instruments and thicker chords. The buildup at the beginning isn't bad, but 0:52- onward feels very empty. Especially at 1:43.

The pizzicato violins at the beginning could use a pass of humanization and reverb. Real violins playing pizzicato tend not to sound perfectly accurate.

At 0:52, the pizzicato violins seemed to be out of sync?

The xylophone and piano could use a pass of humanization too.

I feel like the brass that plays at 1:43 would match the style better if if sounded smoother. You could achieve this by lowering the velocity and raising the volume to compensate, or putting it an octave higher.

Your solo/melody instruments don't seem to play very strong in general. Since the orchestration is generally empty, the focus is mostly on them, and because they're just as quiet as everything else the whole song kinda lacks energy.

Leading up to 2:14, there could have been a crescendo.

And despite you not wanting arrangement advice: Is this supposed to be a different take on the original song, or is it supposed to keep the same style? Because if this is the latter, I think the song would sound much better with a guitar bass or solo double bass/vibes combo at the beginning. your version seems to loose all the awesome jazzy bassiness of the original, but if this is what you're going for, the violin pizzicato isn't as bad, (especially if you're going for a big orchestra effect, though the emptiness of the arrangement kinda contradicts that,) though I would really prefer a stronger bassline.

Here's the new version: https://soundcloud.com/willpisani/secret-of-the-forest-chrono-trigger-v-07

I've swapped out the pizzicato violin for vibes and the original double bass for a solo double bass as per your suggestion. Arrangement advice other than comments like "it's too conservative" etc. is welcome. I've added more backing instruments (choir) and tweaked the volume, velocity, and panning on multiple tracks.

How's the soundscape this time? After the five drum hits there is a slide whistle which is intended to be the "waahhh" sound in the original, what do you think?

Thank you very much for the feedback!!

I think the intro bass interpretation is really weird, feels extremely out of sync. As people already pointed, it feels really empty.

Choirs sounds fake as well. it doesnt help that they are hard panned.

Also, a lot of instruments feels like they have the same reeverb applied over them, you should experiment with different reeverbs for each isntruments. It's also a tad too heavy (but it works fine like that for some instruments, just not for everything)

Yeah .... I think this is good. I can hear good panning on most things, decent mix, and nothing seems out of place. There still a lot of 'space' in the song, but it matches the original tone of the track, IMO.

If you're confident, tag this thread as 'eval' so you can get a good check-over by a judge before you submit. Great work!
