Hehe, I think that would actually be pretty fun. I almost always mix and master visually, and I sing quite a lot. :) Obviously if I do like how it goes I'll polish it up later with the volume on. BONUS: Try doing it without playing an instrument in real life. You may not know what key you're in, but knowing your intervals, it shouldn't be all that bad!

Before or after picking out sounds, though?

This is actually a pretty amusing idea. You choose a preset and have no idea that it sounds like a dying whale, but you write a whole mellow piece thinking that it sounds like a synthesized flute lead.

I think I'm better at coming up with stuff like this than I am at actually making music XD

Thanks, guys! I used presets I made before, and I used the "Recent files" folder in FL Studio to pick samples I used yesterday. :nicework: With my volume on though, it was improved for about 30 more minutes:

So that's what I would have done with my volume on for an hour. (didn't really think about what I wanted to write though; I just let it flow out)

I'm stopping this song there though, but it was a fun experiment!

EDIT:

Now that I think about it, it kinda reminds me of this feel:

Here's my attempt at a "Drum N' Bass" style 30 second tune composed and mixed with the volume off. I just used a preset slidey-synth lead I made with Sylenth a while back, a sine wave for the bass and a supersaw for the chords. Drums are just a random loop I had sitting in a lonely folder somewhere. A flanger on the lead as well and cutoff filter intro always sounds cool.

Prepare yourself for suckage, but to be fair that's the same line I use on music I made when actually listening to it.
