•Comments: I think we all remember with affection this greatgame, at least for me it was a game that marked mychildhood. Now that I'm into music, I could not missa tribute dedicated to one of the best games I had at that time.

This is a cool, downtempo take on this source, I dig the soundscape right away.  Reverb is heavy and the soundscape is just bordering on muddy but I think it is ok.  Piano sequencing is stiff but the heavy reverb almost hides it.  Hat sequencing is very good, so is the 808 snare sequencing.  I'm liking this arrangement generally, although there are areas of straight copy pasta.  I'm not a fan of wide saws, they have to be sequenced and processed so carefully so they don't sound cheesy.  There are good transitions in this arrangement, although the filter fades are overused just a bit.  Lots of good little fills and candy throughout the mix.  I'm not always finding a solid lead to latch onto as I listen, and I don't feel like the wide saw makes a good lead when it plays.  It gets the job done, just barely for me.  Mixing isn't perfect, but lots of creativity here and it's a good listen.  I'm going to hold my vote to see where other Js are with this.

 

edit 10/15/15:  Listening again.  I still like this generally, but my two main issues remain.  The soundscape needs to be cleaned up somewhat, so much reverb on every element is making things mush together.  Also, in the areas of straight copy-pasta, maybe add one extra element or change the writing a little, it doesn't have to be a huge change, just a little variation to break things up.  Larry is right, this is 85% there, give it that little extra polish to push it over the bar!

Vanilla lead synths, but a decent groove. Something sounds lossier than it should, like some higher frequencies or clarity are gone, but the soundscape was otherwise OK. The kick/clap pattern at the core of this (first used at :20) was getting too repetitive at 1:52, but all of the other elements around it were evolving adequately. By 3:01, I was really tired of the kick/clap groove at the base of this; it needs more variation, like you have with the other writing; it doesn't need to be crazy, but vary that clap so it doesn't drag the energy of the piece down. What's here otherwise was creative, but getting so repetitive with such a plain, thin groove needlessly holds the composition in one gear despite other substantive writing changes going on.

It's a somewhat close vote, and a cool piece that's IMO 85% of the way there, but just needs that attention to detail with the perc pattern to not undermine the dynamics of the piece and keep it fresh throughout. Maybe I'm the bad guy, and no one else will agree the beat was as much of a factor.

Some added clarity in the mixing and a higher encoding would help as well. I wasn't bothered by anything being a cut-and-paste rehash because the overall arrangement was definitely interpretive enough. Good luck with the rest of the vote, Francisco, and definitely don't be discouraged if this doesn't make it as is. You show great potential, and I enjoyed your style.

A chill rendition of the original, which picks up with a bit of energy near the end. Your instrument choices fit well together for the most part, and I found the beat drove things along nicely (at least initially). There are a couple of issues to point out that I think need attention:

  • On the production side, I do feel that some clarity is lost in this mix which could be a result of too much reverb or too many stereo sounds fighting for space. In addition, when the track gets busier there is some cloudiness in the low-end. I think the track would benefit from some more clarity, through a combination of dialling back the reverb and/or running a HPF/EQ over the parts that don't need the lows.
  • I had some problems with the lead line being quite generic sonically, but found your riffing compensated for this for the most part.
  • Arrangement wise, you have a good concept, but I did feel the mix felt a bit samey as things progressed. You did break down things here and there which was definitely needed, but I wish there was more variation in some of your parts (your drums in particular).

Of the above issues, I feel the clarity aspect is what tips me to a NO overall. If we can get some more clarity we're in a better place.
