Album Concept

This is a continuation of the Secret of Mana project initiated by Bahamut and later on by pu_freak, now under new management.

Secret of Mana has 3 memorable main characters, each with their own personalities, and each of them deserves their own disc with music to reflect these personalities and the moods they evoke in us. What does that mean? Easy enough: we’re going for a 3 disc album, each one named after one of the main characters of Secret of Mana, and each with their own mood that reflect that particular character:

  • Disc 1 - Popoi: lighter, happy songs
  • Disc 2 - Primm: energetic songs
  • Disc 3 - Randi: more serious, calmer or sad songs

So in line with the game, the album will start off with the lighter, happier themes helmed by Popoi, the sprite, the nimble trickster of the three. To keep you going on your adventure, disc two will be all about energetic songs, courtesy of Primm, our passionate and spirited heroine. Because the mood of the game becomes darker and more serious near the end, we close off with Randi with his solemnness and strength to see things through to their conclusion.

We’ll be working on the track order as we go along, because it will ultimately depend on the remixes that you guys create. However, if you want your track to be on a certain disk, then tell us so we can plan for it.

Deadlines

Of course we will have deadlines too. Since the project has been running for a long time already, it’s high time to get going again and share the Secret of Mana goodness with the world. That means we’ll be firm on deadlines and won’t delay the album to wait for a claimed song to be finished. It might also mean that not every song from the soundtrack will be on the album, which would be a pity, so give it your best!

  • January 15 - initial wips
  • March 5 - wip updates
  • April 30 - substantial wips
  • July 2 - near final tracks
  • September 3 - FINAL DEADLINE

FAQ

Can I join?

Of course, if you're a posted mixer and want to mix a song that's up for grabs you'll get a claim. If you're not a posted mixer, show us a good WIP.

Is there a genre requirement?

No, not really. You can do whatever you think fits the source, but keep the album concept in mind. If that means you’ll turn this epic boss battle song into a slow ballad, all the better!

What's the quality you're going for?

We want the album to be an official OCR album, which means OCR-level quality. We will be really strict on quality and will ask for many updates if we feel like the track isn't good enough yet to pass the jury panel.

Glad to be on board! @Jorito wasn't kidding when he said we're eager - the Secret of Mana and I go WAY back and the OST remains one of my favorites to listen to today. I am excited to help make this dream a reality, and I'm looking forward to working with @HankTheSpankTankJankerson under Jorito's watchful eye to make it happen!

Let the resonance begin... :)

For anyone working on a track that uses french horn, @JohnStacy is a french horn player that is happy to 'excitedly record whatever is thrown my way' (his words). So if your track is in need of some french horn, be sure to hit him up!

So time for some updates... Unfortunately Hakstock had to drop his claim, but we've got a new remixer on board as well. Please welcome StarPhoenix, who claimed Mystic Invasion. Also we got check-ins from a few people and a pretty complete WIP from Sbeast and reportedly Chernabogue's WIP should be reaching us soon. So all good stuff and I'm excited about how it's going :)

Cool.  I'd been slacking .  Not sure which disc is appropriate for the idea I'm working on, so I'll leave that to you folks.

Didn't get the chance to say it sooner, but I'm excited to be on board the project! Thanks to the trio of directors for taking me on and looking forward to hearing all of the awesome tracks once this project comes to fruition. The Secret of Mana soundtrack is one of the all time bests, and these songs deserve the spotlight.

First of all, best wishes for 2017! Let's use this year to give Secret of Mana the tribute it deserves! And yes, this is also your reminder to send in your WIPs for the January 15 deadline :)

Of course we haven't been idle in the past weeks. We were able to reach out to the majority of the people that claimed a track (way) earlier, and quite a few people confirmed their claim (if you haven't yet and are reading this, please let us know you're still on board). We also got our hands on a good amount of WIPs and finished tracks, and we were able to resurrect some people from their OCR hiatus, so good stuff is happening there. Hope to see some more of that good stuff in 2 weeks. Good luck!

So, the first deadline has passed. Because of the change of management we already considered this first deadline mostly as a kickstarter without too high expectations. We got just a handful of WIP updates and a few messages from people that they could only make the next deadline on such short notice. On the good side, we managed to confirm the claims of nearly everybody who claimed before. What's also great is the WIPs and finished tracks we've got our hands on so far; there's some cool stuff on the album already and it can only get better!

Anyway, the second deadline is for real, no more 'getting started' kickstarters. So here's your reminder for the next deadline for March 5th; we expect to see something from @ergosonic, @Hylian Lemon, @zykO, @Rexy, @halc, @audio fidelity, @Harmony, @djpretzel, @RebeccaETripp, @Sagnewshreds, @jnWake, @PabloComa, @pu_freak, @Chernabogue, @Jorito, @Darangen, @Sbeast, @Fishy, @dannthr, @Starphoenix, @Guifrog.

Godspeed.

Whaddayaknow, djpretzel just sent me a sketch of his and Harmony's collab of "What the Forest Taught Me", sweet :)

Also, we have private forums for the album, where you can listen to WIPs the other album remixers posted (I just posted mine) and give feedback. Anyone who confirmed their claim or sent in a WIP/finished track has access to it, so come and share! You can find it in the Private Project Subforums in the Projects forums here on OCR.

I'll have a thing by Monday, I swear. I just got sick last week on the one day I was going to start the thing :/ It's gonna be a remix of "In the Dead of the Night"

Ah, you could have sufficed with just claiming a track, but having a WIP included is of course awesome! Can I at least know which track you'd like to claim so I can mark it down for you?

So DS394 surprised us early with a claim and an upbeat nu-disco/complextro-ish WIP of "In the Dead of Night". Good stuff happening there!
