Soundfont issues/questions

So I downloaded the "DKC Ultimate Collection" soundfont, but A LOT of the samples are messed up (Guitars, I'm looking at you)

I was wondering if I could somehow contact Mr. Wise and ask him if he somehow had "good" samples lying around somewhere.

Can I even do that?

Also found 2's soundfont...haven't tested that one yet.

Might also have messed up samples.....

As far as I'm aware, most of the instruments you hear in the Donkey Kong series are derived from KORG M1 soundbanks (either that or Wavestation). There is actually a VST-version of the synth KORG offers as part of their KORG Legacy Collection. With some instrument layering and modulation you could probably come up with near identical sounds.

As for contacting David Wise... He is on Twitter, but whether he responds or not I could not tell you.

Also, I've been looking around for MD/Genesis soundfonts...can't seem to find any.

Well, I did find one, called the Ultimate MD Soundfont, but it's a StarK file, not an sf2.

So....

A lot of the original sources for the samples are in this thread (mostly from old Korg and Roland modules): http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=2230

Updated versions of the DKC soundfonts are in the Dropbox link here by Bluetronic and they're a LOT better than the old ones: http://www.dkc-atlas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1993&start=50#p40830

Hope that helps!

Thanks, newcomer!

I'll have to check if the samples are any better.

I shall post my experience with the new samples here in a bit.

Noticed you're on there, cool!

Is there anyway to get that one gutiar sample that was used for KI?

Also the guitar samples are still messed up (the main distortion guitars)...

I really want to remaster Gangplank....wait, didn't they already do that?

Regarding the Killer Instinct guitar: there is a Kontakt instrument of it out there, however it sounds really bad as it's missing a lot of the articulations/timbre changes (eg. with changing velocities, modulating etc.) that come with the TS-10's synth engine. Doesn't even sound remotely like the original - with SNES stuff it's different because the instruments are all built with (usually) one single sample.

With the DKC guitar, it sounds that 'harsh' by default in general. It will help when actually writing to add slight volume automation fades with each sustained note, use of pitch bends and a delay to emulate how it originally sounds in the DKC soundtrack... hope that helps.

It does look like Gangplank Galleon is in the works by BlueTronic; the FLP for that is in the Dropbox folder if you want to take a look.

You have to download the wavs of the instuments, though.

Which is fine...

Do you use FLS?

If so, how do you pitch-bend?

On another note, I'm trying to remake Gangplank myself...reverb for the samples doesn't seem to work...

Have to add in manually...

Yeah, reverb is done using a plugin or outside hardware, not part of the samples themselves - sometimes VST instruments come with a reverb built-in. The DKC soundtrack in particular actually didn't use the SNES's reverb, instead Dave Wise used delay (a doubling of one of the instrument channels played slightly ahead) for that effect.

To pitch bend, you can use slide notes in the piano roll if you're using an FL native plugin (ex. Fruity Soundfont Player), or otherwise through automation clips.

I whipped up an FLP of a portion of the guitar lead in Gangplank Galleon as I was curious myself - it has the slide notes, delay, and volume automation.
