The People's Remix Competition 401
PRCv16-15

Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition!

In PRC398 it was NinjaPenguinDan who claimed the victory. In PRC399 HoboKa was the winner. HoboKa submitted a source which will be used for this round.

Since this game takes place in New York, Christmas time, it's a much more fitting source than previous.  Please replace with other pick.

(HoboKa first send a different source, but asked me to use this one for this round).

Source: Parasite Eve - Out of Phase (PS1)

The deadline is Friday December 20th 2019 at 10:59 am ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT), check the ThaSauce page for the exact time left. Make sure that the song is uploaded to ThaSauce or that there’s a download link posted in this thread. 2 Days extra.

You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix. You are free to create a second ThaSauce account for that if you use ThaSauce, it's needed to be able to upload a second remix if you use ThaSauce. Of course you can also upload it somewhere else and put a download link in this thread.

Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted in this thread.

Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they receive a free first place vote added onto their score.

The winner of this round may select the source for PRC403, the rounds after next round.

The winner of PRC399, HoboKa, who picked this source, can only participate by submitting a Bonus Mix. His vote is doubled in the voting stage.

You can find the full rules list at this page as well.

GOOD LUCK!

Parasite Eve was the very first PRC that I entered waaaaay back in Round 218 (also, strangely, that remix is one of the most popular on my Soundcloud. I have no idea why!), so I may well have to see what I can do with this source.

Correct. It was a good round with 8 songs. PRC229 was also a Parasite Eve round with 2 songs.

So while I pick my source for PRC404 (or whichever one it is), I have a question for the participants of this fine musical competition; would you prefer something reasonably simple that would lend itself more to adding your own interpretations, or something more challenging and potentially out of your comfort zone?

If it was me, then i would go for something with drums, or something like that (Pretty much something with a groove or something. I mean i don't wanna dictate your choices, but this is me)

Only because, i'm not so good remixing orchestral music...

This is only from my experiences.

Sad story to relate.  Back in 2009-2012 I submitted stuff to you-know-where, I got labeled as meandering and directionless, so I took less risks and went for more conservative approaches to remixing.  This one from 2014 may be the riskiest.

Source:

Maybe on the Terranigma project and Bad Ass Vol 2, I went more dangerous??  Not sure.  What about you Trism?

This remix is actually pretty good, like really good.

I really find it a bit stupid, that people have to follow a strict set of rules, in order to BE CREATIVE.

So i'm guessing they rejected you, because it wasn't within the realms of say...a MnP styled approach?

I see a lot here, where they are often rejected for not being creative, and just giving it a HD makeover or something. But in this case i think it seems to be the other way round.

But back on topic, this is a really nice synth rock/orchestral arrangement of this source.

(Sorry big edits...apologies on the 20+... Trying to discombobulate my brain-fog-riddled thoughts)

Oh shit!  Context fail, sorry!  Older remixes of mine ventured TOO far apparently, and some of them were pretty avant-garde (the first few sucked pretty bad production and composition, so I'd be disingenuous if I said they deserved to be passed), this Umaro Remix was probably a bad example, just pointing out that this remix was the last that I really tried to innovate big time...  There was a non-extended version of this remix that was just not up to snuff production wise and it was NO'd.  And I agreed with the consensus with the J's.  Anyways, thanks for listening to my rambles.  Thankfully, we still hear a lot of good music passing the gate, so... IDK.  Just get good production, THEN try to innovate (that's my takeaway) because irrc, production was also a huge barrier.  The other platitude is don't submit and just do your own thing.  No one is forcing us to.  Haha.

Maybe I'll PM you my 'better' contentious entries.  :D

But i actually like this remix. (To be fair, i'm quite laid back about this sort of stuff. I'll listen to something, and then more often than not enjoy it, even if it needs work)

I'd figured this would be an early work, to say that it was rejected, and you don't seem to like it.

At least i enjoyed it. Looking forward to some more entries from you.

Indeed.  BTW, you should [edit] acquire some fancier sample libraries, I think you could go pretty far.

@BundeslangSpecial Anniversary round huh?  Compoverse now has a Discord.  We could do a kind of Live-Listen to kick off the voting stage.

Maybe we could do a "Spin the Wheel" type idea, where you pick a game, kinda like when you picked SONIC for previous round.

--OR--

Do what I did for round 100 MnP and hand-pick the most recently active participants to select their own tunes and "pool in" all the souces as a list to choose from... doesn't need to be OLR-themed, obviously.

Don't know yet. Probably when something will happen, it will not be next round but the round after that to kick of the next season. In combination with that, the MnP100 thing could work well (kicking of season 17 with sources picked by the most active participants from season 16).

The live-listen is also a good idea but difficult as I often fail myself to start the voting stage on time and sometimes rounds are extended.

Picking a source could be a good idea, and then have a list for people to choose from, as a final list.

What could also be good, is maybe a one-to-one style round, where one person sends another person their source, and it's your job to remix said source, and vice versa. So i send HoboKa something, and he sends me something and we remix it like that. As a suggestion by the way.

I like this idea.

This idea sounds a lot like the Freshly Baked Remixer Challenge.

Users could make a request, remixers could sign up. After a date, each remixer was matched to a request. That was not a contest, there was no voting.

The last round is here: http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/FBRC2011
