  1. I concur with all the thank yous to DJP. OCR has been (and will continue to be) a big part of my musical journey. It got me out of my classical norm in 2002, and I am not sure I would be teaching music technology without its influence since then. Although life has kept me from contributing much, DJP and staff's work has helped me inspire kids outside the traditional band/orchestra/choir paradigm in the USA. All the best, and I look forward to the future of OCR!
  2. I enjoyed this quite a bit. The piece is not in hurry and builds nicely. Bravo!
  3. I've run PLAY and Kontakt just fine on my Windows 10 PC. I've never head a problem with my VSTs, other than having constantly reconfigure my directories as I upgrade to bigger SSDs. However, Windows 10 adds new features when it updates itself. This means it takes more resources to run with every update, and my FX 8350 processor doesn't go as far as it used to. Hopefully Ryzen will hit a nice price-point for an upgrade, or maybe it is time to make the switch over to Intel.
  4. I remember seeing some of these extended techniques in my college orchestration class. Sadly I've never played this piece, but it sounds pretty cool. Here's a link to a paper that explains the symbols. http://www.anthonybannach.com/uploads/2/1/6/7/21674290/pendereckipaper.pdf It doesn't explain the slashes very well (he says hit the string with the nut, which is impossible), but if I were playing this I would hit the fingerboard/strings with the wood or maybe the screw of the bow. That is what it sounds like in the recording, and I'll bet it is the main percussive sound you are hearing. High frequency pizzicato decays very fast, and is not very loud, so I doubt that is the "percussive" sound. Gario's way of doing it looks good. If you are limited with libraries, try a Bartok Pizz for the percussive effect, or a col legno patch if you have it. Happy sampling!
  5. It is almost Thanksgiving in the United States, and that means black Friday sales are starting to appear. PreSonus Studio One is half-off on every version. You need a code that they provide to you. It goes until Nov. 28th. When Fl 12 came out, several people jumped ship to S1. (FL 12 got a lot better when patches came out, in my opinion) I think S1 is a sharp and fun DAW. https://shop.presonus.com/products/software/studio-one-prods/Studio-One-3-Digital-Downloads Ableton is taking 20% off just about everything until Jan 11th. I recently took a Mooc class on Live 9, and enjoyed using their DAW. Their Push educational initiative helped me start a music technology club with my middle school students. https://www.ableton.com/ Sweetwater has some nice black Friday deals in general all-week, but they managed to get better deals on izotope products than izotope's main website... I personally like izotope, although it is a resource draining plugin. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/search.php?s=s:2016-nov-izotope-rep-sale Cinematic Strings 2 is on sale until the 28th as well. I love this string library! They also have their new string library on sale as well. http://www.cinematicstrings.com/ I am sure there are others, but this is what I have seen so far. Happy Thanksgiving!
  6. Wow that is pretty cool! I don't know how confident I would be doing it, but it might be worth a shot if it saves a grand or two for other priorities.
  7. Hi All! My wife and I have built a nice house, and I'm looking at turning the upstairs loft into a studio. Right now the sky is the limit, and was wondering where would be a good place to look for some quality studio furniture or DiY instructions. It seems that most of my normal places either sell stuff too small or really high end mixing consoles. The only real requirement is whatever furniture I end up with needs to accommodate an 88-key controller and two monitor screens. Thanks!
  8. Hello everyone, After finishing my masters thesis, I'm back to remixing. I've updated my track a bit and posted it here. Comments are always appreciated. It might clip around 3:10, or it might be my cheap monitors with all the bass going on. Thanks! https://soundcloud.com/william-rhoden/bach-to-the-valley-wip
  9. Hello everyone! I'm trying to do a remix of some of Bach's music with Gerudo Valley in an interesting way. There are at least three different Bach works referenced here. I feel I need to rework the drums and rhythms at some places. Also, I'm still working out the ending, but I wanted to share it here. Let me know what you think! Thanks, Rodok ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION [ ] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source [ ] Too liberal - not enough connections to the source (too much original writing) [ ] Too much direct sampling from original game audio [ ] Borrows heavily from non-source material (eg. a theme from a movie) PRODUCTION [ ] Too loud [ ] Too quiet [ ] Low-quality samples [ ] Unrealistic sequencing [ ] Generic/cliche sound choices [ ] Drums have no energy [ ] Overcompressed (pumping/no dynamics) [ ] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range) STRUCTURE [ ] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [ ] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [ ] Pace too plodding [ ] Too repetitive [ ] Too short [ ] Abrupt ending PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts)
  10. Boy FAST Racing NEO looks cool! Glad it's only $15. That's actually reasonable. NID: voiceindesert
  11. 1. I use a Focusrite 2i2 2. It sounds good, is stable, and I don't need more than two I/Os. 3. Really I just got lucky. I did a lot of research, but was still unsure. The Phantom Power was important for my mic, but I didn't really know much about the different brand reputations. 4. Look for what you need, not what you want. I may want to look cool with 10 I/Os, but do I really need that for guitar/vocals or violin? Not really. 5. I'd avoid trying to sub in a soundblaster 24 bit with ASIO4ALL. Yeah it's technically the same bit depth and sample rate at a third the cost, but it was a huge difference getting the 2i2 over that. 6. The 2i2 is nice, but get what works for you, $ and performance wise. 7. I can box it up, use it with my laptop to record students and such. I used it to give an FL demo to a bunch of middle school kids last year.
  12. My friends and I found OCR back in 2003 in my high school programming class as freshmen. The first OCR I heard was... http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00996 I haven't stopped listening. Started remixing during undergrad music school, and started learning to produce in the last two years. I also have an obsession with remixing Gerudo Valley. I blame it on hearing djpretzel's "Gerudo Interlude" (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00368) early on.
  13. Sounded like an introduction to a larger song. I enjoyed the ambiance!
  14. I enjoyed the gameboy sounds. I hope I can sleep tonight!
  15. Thanks Timaeus. I agree, it did end up a bit loud. Living and learning.
