OverClocked ReMix Joins Video Games Live in Washington, DC

For Immediate Release
June 28, 2007
Contact: Larry Oji, larryoji@gmail.com (larryoji@gmail.com)

FAIRFAX, Va.–-OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/../)), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and preservation of video game music, will join Video Games Live (www.videogameslive.com (http://www.videogameslive.com/)) in Washington, DC this Friday and Saturday at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the concert series' first appearance in the nation's capitol. Video Games Live brings the music of video and computer games to cities around the world, combining live performances by a symphony orchestra with innovative and interactive multimedia presentations. Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, game composers themselves, organized the first concert event in 2005, and have since performed to sold out shows around the globe.

This weekend's performance marks OverClocked ReMix's first official participation in Video Games Live as a contributor of musical material for the concert's opening and closing events and sponsor of several prizes for audience members. OverClocked ReMix's primary focus is a Web site that hosts fan arrangements of game music from musicians around the world, available for download free of charge. David W. Lloyd, a local resident of Fairfax, Virginia, created the site in 1999 with the goal of promoting game music through arrangement and reinterpretation.

The partnership between OverClocked ReMix and Video Games Live comes naturally, as both organizations share a common interest in promoting game music as an art form. "It's really amazing to be working with ocremix.org because I've always been such a huge fan of the site and the idea behind it," says Tallarico. "As a video game composer, it's a real honor to know that so many people are so passionate about video game music."

Additional tour dates for Video Games Live can be found on the event's Web site at http://www.videogameslive.com/index.php?s=dates (http://www.videogameslive.com/index.php?s=dates). Hundreds of free game music arrangements and a thriving community of game music fans can be found at OverClocked ReMix's Web site, www.ocremix.org (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/../).

(emphasis added)

What exactly does this mean? Can anyone clarify this?

I am not sure whether to think that people will be hearing Triforce Majeure (or insert ambient/techno/trance song here) as they find their seats or some background Philharmonic Suite playing or live performances of Dragon Song and Basilisk Run (I wish ).

In any case, this fills my OCR-loving heart with pride.

Seat-finding material, for now at least... maybe one day something OCR can be incorporated into the show proper, but a mix playlist works well for intro/outro as people funnel in or leave.

Second night was just as awesome. BGC & myself (and our respective significant others) all hung out backstage during the entire show. Circles and I filled in for the djp role of giving away the Space Invaders prize on stage. Big thanks go to Mike (http://www.videogameslive.com/index.php?s=ourteam) for making it all happen. Will blog about ALL of that hopefully by tomorrow.

We went to this little Cafe and they had a piano there...
War followed immediately after the discovery for control of it. Taucer won and played stuff, including Lovers Reef... we all sang it and then we thought to ourselves we should tape it thus showing it to Jill making her cry for the horrible murdering of her part.

We came up with two names for it... either Singles Reef or Losers Reef.
I personally think that Singles Reef works better but thats just me.

I regret not buying tickets for the Saturday show. I saw the OCRemix group there, but felt too anxious to join for whatever reason. I thought the other cosplayers had pretty good costumes too (I sat next to the songstress Yuna cosplayer).

Somehow, I managed to buy seats that were directly behind Emmanuel Fratianni, Laurie Robinson, and Christopher Tin. I felt pretty stupid for not realizing who they were until Tommy asked them to stand up and be recognized.

So The Pezman called me I think on the way to Dave's house asking for directions, but at the time, I was slightly lost. I ended up going to far, and he hadn't gone far enough... I pulled in about 45 seconds before he did, and we ended up parking where we would have been towed. He also called me the next day to make sure people were at Dave's place when he was about to head over in the morning. We also had some good conversation on the way to the Kennedy Center from Bertucci's... He was also the first person to formally introduce himself to me. Rawk on Pez...

DA would have been more into the song if she'd remembered the words. DA also has a quiet voice, but DA still had fun singing. DA also got people started on the piano thing in the first place.

DA doesn't normally talk in third person.

Anyways, I definately think all meetups should occur in a deli with a piano and/or by random fountains with urinal cakes in them.

Ahem.

You forgot to mention how I saved the day when our car was pulled over by the cops because florescent lights are illegal in Virginia (but we actually think it's because they needed to reach their monthly quota). When q-pa told them we were coming from a video game concert they got riled up... apparently they didn't like video games. "That's it," they said. "We're taking you downtown." At this point I, in all my badassery, took a page from Taucer and barrel-rolled out of the car. I walked straight up to the cops and said "Listen up, guys. You'd better not mess, or else I'll karate chop both your asses so hard you're not gonna be able to sit in your car for three minutes without passing out from the pain." Needless to say, we were let off with only a warning ticket.

Oh, and Re: The conversation about Bruce Willis in the snack place:

Willis left New York City and headed to California to audition for several television shows. He auditioned for the TV series Moonlighting (1985–89), while competing against 3,000 other actors for the position and was selected to play David Addison Jr. The starring role helped to establish him as a comedic actor, with the show lasting five seasons. However, it was his then-unexpected turn in the film Die Hard that catapulted him to fame.

Finally going home. In q-pa's vehicle, my Sonic plushie makes nice with q's Mario dash figure. Drunk, maybe?

Now, because I'm nuts like that, 2007 VGL Meet .gifs! Ai feiru atto efurizingu ekkuseputo animeshiyon!

The burst on my cam caught Tim's special Frisbee-launching Spin Move, and had I not a warped sense of humor, I would've cropped the pic to just him. But I LOL at the others. Terry Gilliam can eat it. :)

I still have videos coming, hopefully tomorrow.

After the show, which kicked enough ass. Those cute little Phoenix Wright ladies seemd nuttier than all get out, and were always in a dancing mood.

But I'll be honest...

...I wasn't complaining.

Late night at Dave's (djpretzel). And I do mean late; after the meet-and-greet during the show wrap-up, the clock reached midnight. Thrashing on "Guitar Hero" for the 360. Dave's entertainment and studio setups are to be admired.

Oh goodness those pictures kick ass. :nicework: That one of Dave with the Wii bowling is pretty damn awesome. The streak effects really add a lot of lol. That picture of my back needs to be explained a bit, though, I think. Thursday night (which was really chill, BTW,) we went out and had some Don Pablo's, and coming back from there to DJP's, I had a severe need for a potty break. So bad, in fact, that I couldn't wait until I got the few miles to his house. Instead, we pull over to the side of the road and I relieve myself over the guardrail. A car goes by, and being in a jovial mood, I wave to them. Convoluted story I'll admit, but my point is that OCR people are good people.

So yeah, I had a great time, and apparently so did Tim (my friend, who has yet to post here.) Thanks for making us feel comfortable and being your awesome selves, OCR.

Also, you're welcome, Wes.

Sorry, I would have gotten more, but my girlfriend was upstairs, and I actually took a business call at Dave's... So it was kinda hectic, plus I was doing car moving and such. I would have loved to get more. I even replaced my batteries as you were setting up and such... Jimmy, you have an awesome voice, dude. As Dave said "Where are your vocal remixes, huh?"

As Dave said "Where are your vocal remixes, huh?"
Owing to the Tommy Tallarico hype and the fact that DJSammy put on the EWJ CD he won while driving us back to DC, I opened up Earthworm Jim as soon as I got home. And then he got injured, uttering "Ow!" in that thick southern drawl of his.

And then I remembered BGC's voice.

Hell yeah.

What version?
I recommend either the PC or Sega CD version, the so-called "special editions," as they have extra voices and better music--and 1.5 bonus levels.
The killer guitar solo in "Buttville, pt. 1" alone is worth it. 8-)

Aviod the GBA port if you can help it...

Also in the cosplay section, the person you labelled as Cloud is actually Chrono. Are you sure? "Crono" from Chrono Trigger?
I don't know exactly who this is, but she was in the top 10 cosplayers that got to go onstage before the show. I remember hearing her character's name as "Cloud" from some RPG that I've never played... ;-)

Also, I'm trying to add the name corrections to my post above but since the mods consolidated my multiple posts into one, it's hitting me with that 4-image limit. Can one of the mods do it for me please? :350:

Hmm, did some research here.

Definitely not Cloud (http://www.cloud-strife.net/pictures/cloud.jpg) from Final Fantasy VII. Maybe there's another Cloud in another game?

Not exactly Crono (http://pressthebuttons.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/crono.jpg) either; he doesn't have a bandana.

Then again, not exactly Serge (http://www.rpgplanet.com/chrono/images/cc/mc-fig-serge.jpg), the equivalent to Crono in Chrono Cross, since Serge has a swallow instead of a sword.

So maybe it is some other Cloud, or maybe it's an (accidental?) Serge/Crono combination that got announced wrong.

Agreed. OCR has some extremely chill cats amongst the community, not to mention some powerful talent (Harmony, BGC, bustatunez, etc..)

BTW, djp might downplay it, but I thought the OCR used as background at the concert was well-placed and well-received. Good stuff.

Have to say, the concert was pretty sweet experience. Although I do wish the set varied a bit more from what I saw in Philly, it was awesome to hear those songs performed live all over again. The Medal of Honor theme really got to me, both times, especially considering how well the footage reflected & amplified the music. Also, walking into the hall just prior to the show and realizing that hundreds of people are listening to Overclocked Remixes blaring over the loudspeakers! That was just so cool, despite knowing it was gonna happen. I can only imagine how Dave must've been feeling. :)

And thanks to Sammy winning the costume contest (judged by two of our own group), we have a new meme to spread around OCR. Groove bias is just so passé now that we have Tetris bias! ;)

Best part of the meetup had to be exposing my wonderful ultimate frisbee skillz to all. Just look at that disc glide so gracefully... for half a foot before wobbling to the ground a yard away. <.< Oh yeah, awesome talent! >.> Especially memorable when the two *cough* "best" players on the field fumbled around with the frisbee (and nearly into each other) for a few crazy seconds. Ah, fun times.

But in all respectful seriousness, Bustatunez, you are one musically gifted piano-jammin' badass. Being at the cafe was like a mini-concert in and of itself. :D

Hey now, Sammy got in the costume contest fair and square. Besides, it was the crowd who voted. We were extra loud, but it took the whole crowd to give him the win. q-pa and Kroze only filtered it down to the main contestants.

As you should know from your membership in the judge panel, there is no possibility for rational defense against judge bias! It always wins in the end, like a mindless, all-consuming... Tetris block. o.o

Really, I don't care who won. Although, it is amusing that Sammy got one of the OCR sampler discs.

DragonAvenger is right about the sampler discs.

djp knows the entire contents of the walk-in-music disc since he's the "author"; it was playing before we decided to come into the hall.

EDIT: See Larry's list below for the accurate playlist. ;P

2. Castlevania II 'Down Town'
3. Final Fantasy VI 'Cantata for Dancing: I. Mors ego sum mortis'
4. Chrono Trigger 'Time Chill'
5. Super Mario World 'Monstrous Turtles!'
6. Xenogears 'Pillar of Salt'

In the middle of 'Pillar', the house lights went up and it was time for the show.

Very nice, very nice. Seems fair & balanced to me. It is a bit harder to appreciate tunes that are orchestral in nature... the distinct and definite themes we grew up with are now complex masterpieces with 4, 5, 6 part harmonies and so much going on at a given time. But that is true of orchestral in general and it means that we, as music appreciators, just need to work a bit harder to hear (and, consequently, remix) it all.

1. Can we get linkage to some of the articles and inteviews written up in these various media?

2. Rick Baretto spoke to me while I was in line to play the Space Invaders game, and I wrote him afterwards to tell him more about OCR. I think he'd be interested in a more formal affiliation... PM me for details.

3. Give me the GoW music & SFXs & MIDIs oh please.
