Super Mario World 'The Dark Reaches of SMW'
Must say, I absolutely loved this song ever since the first time I heard it. What I used to think was only a remix of the Ghost House's theme from Super Mario World, turns out to actually be a remix of Bowser's Castle (among other themes that I really can't name offhand). Great use of different instruments going on, and several wonderful uses of in-game samples make this a definitely CD worthy song in my personal opinion.

This is a remix of one of my favorite SMW tunes, and it's a very good one at that. It has lots of great in-game sample use, and a nice melody with all kinds of neat tweaks. This is the kind of remix that doesn't stray too far from the original in instrumentation, but it's a very good remix nonetheless.

I just love how this morphs into something happy towards the end. That little pitch bent synth is just great. Definitely some good stuff.

Really really good. I listen to it in my car on my way to work. The drum is excellent and works very well with the melody. My favorite part is at 1:38.
Can't wait to hear new stuff from aneurysm !

This is the only remix on OC that I've actually danced to. Great percussion, killer beat, wonderful transitions, excellent sampling job... why can't the rest of aneursym's work be more like this? :P

Oh YES. This is my personal favorite on the site. Whenever you talk to me about any game samples, well applied techno, medleys, or great remixes, this will be the first one to come to my mind. This is my count of the songs remixed: Ghost House Theme, Castle Theme, Forest of Illusion Theme (better than da phunky forest), Donut Plains Theme... and I'm sure I'm missing one. So that's five songs remixed better than anywhere else. Did I mention the best-placed fx from the game ever concieved? Since I'm the most evil human being in the world, I have to state that the donut plains section at the end seems random, but I can't touch this. 8/8

I always was creeped out by the eerieness of this music when i was little and i played it,but as i got older, i fell in love with it. This remix captures all of the eerie + kickass aspects of it. It really rocks! i really love the cut into the overworld tune [wasn't that the overworld?yeah,it was] ^^ transitions are real nice, and the drums rock my socks. wait,i'm not WEARING socks. okay,it rocks so much I put socks on,only to have them rocked right off?
I however am wearing socks, and this track is rocking them.
I have to say I am a personal fan of aneurysm. This was the first track of his I heard, and I love it. The track revolves around the drums, and nice distortions coupled make this a remix I'd recommend for anyone at least to try out. The ending is perhaps my only complaint, the last 10 seconds does seem to be a bit empty IMO.
Anyone who's played SMW and loved its music should definitely download it, and I would of thought the majority of those would like this track.

O.O I know that beat anywhere!! In the beginning it's Michael Jackson's weird sound going Ah, ah, ah, ah! And near the end, it's Billy Jean's song beat. NICE way of using it. ^_^ I love this remix AND Michael jackson's 80's music.

I'm in love with this song... this style is beautiful.
When you mix up the beat after pretty much every count of 4... or better yet sort of without counting at all... it almost always becomes a song which grows on you.
Great song choice, excellent dark style and good integration of sound effects. Favourite sampled effect is the clicky thing at 1:30... drool... so subtle and perfect... like a pin prick. My favourite part of the whole thing though has the subtle pitch bending note on every 8 count after the song switch. Delicious delicious song. OC'ers! MAKE MORE LIKE THIS!

Wow. That was really cool. Great transitions, and some really good songs from SMW to be remixed. I loved the way you added in random SFX from the game; that always makes my day. "Great stuff, worth every nanosecond of the download." Very, very true. Good job, man!

Dude, I'm lovin' this song. The samples that you used near the middle were just absolutely astounding, considering this whole song is done in 96kbps quality. ^o^ There was one time my last semester when I was still a Sophomore in high school I brought my cd player and a cd with this song on it. It was during third block. Arts and Humanities. We were watching a movie for the heck of it because other classes were behind of us, so we watched a movie to pass the time and allow the other blocks to catch up with us, so, I was bored and I decided to pull out my RCA $56 cd player with MP3/WMA compatibility. I was listening to this song and a girl to the left of me asked what I was listening to. I told her some kind of geeky response, such as: watch the movie. shh, you're loud. Or something of that nature. She wanted to listen to this song. I gave her the headphones. She listened for a while and asked me if I got this at "pornomusic.com" I was like, "Whoa! If I ever said that on OCR, I'd get either in so much trouble or be popular like metroid684!" So, now I've decided to tell you that someone actually thought your music is porno music! lol Really, I don't care what it sounds like to me. This song is so awesome yo. I give this a 94.7. Take care!

I give it a cool 8.98/10 [needs a better ending(but wut do i know)]

HECK yes!
Don't know why I haven't already reviewed this but I just love this song!
Aneurysm's taken the best songs from the game and molded them together to create this exciting work of art
the song is packed with variety of beats and instruments its great
that intro riff is just so interesting, i remember it from the game but it sounds 20 thousand times better here for some reason
theres a cool little pick up at 0:08
cool little pause effect thingermajiggers there at 0:35 but it jumps to the forest part too soon, or the transition could have been better
from 1:05-1:22 its great how he keeps the this part moving by adding rhythm such as at 1:14
at 1:20 everything quiets down and then it sounds like someone got hit on the head with a mallot and you can see the stars
at 1:29 the beat comes back in with some mario sounds, i especially like the spring sound and how aneurysm uses the warp pipe sound as a pickup to 1:38
1:38, love the synth instrument here and i love the drums here
1:46, nice heavy chord thingi there
1:49 and 1:58, short but excellent drums clips there
2:28, all the instruments back off for that lil riff thing, the drum clips here are just effin terrific especially at 3:32
this song is great but like the above guy, i have a problem with the ending
i like the instruments that sound like theyre sighing but the drums just cut out too soon
then my winamp starts to play vanilla extract witch just sounds too awkward right after hearing dark reaches

The best SMW mix I've heard ever. The drums and the background winds make this song a work of art. If the quality was better then that would be even better!

This song is ORSOME!! Sounds like something you'd breakdance to in the beginning or something but this is amongst my favorites if not my favorite Mario remix.

I'm really loving that crazy drum beat. That's the thing which makes this remix dirrefent and outstanding. The sound effects from the game were great! And I really loved the part when all that heavy and dark feeling morphed into "Overworld"-theme...

This is probably the best castle remix I've heard. I like the change at the end. Keep up the good work.

there are some pretty terrible samples here and the changeups are awkward
but it's so groovy
would be so much better if it wasn't a medley and just stuck with the castle theme and maybe integrated the forest song better
love the ep chords at 0:35

I would have to say the best sounding part (to me at least) was the forest of illusion beat. It's so creepy sounding. I would have to say overall I enjoy the first half more than the second. I starts so dark but seems to lose it a bit towards the end.:<
Samples aren't great, but the beats are really nice. For being as old school as it is, it has a lot of charm.

I put this on my iPod without listening to it beforehand, so I was walking down the street at night when it first happened to come on. At about 0:02 when that big beat kicks in for the first time, I thought "oh what the hell" and started dancing down the street. And then at 0:41, when Forest of Illusion came into the equation, I just had to go all out and danced all the way home. awwww yeah.
I guess it's a good thing that my 80-year-old neighbors were sleeping, although.. I'm sure they would have done the same.

It's hard not to compare this one to AeroZ/Zircon's more updated, fleshed out takes on the same theme, but even with those in mind I still think this one has its charms. The string samples feel weak but all the synthetic elements fit really well together. This one honestly feels like the kind of thing you'd hear passing the judges panel today, if the organic samples were updated and the arrangement was a bit more creative. Really nice work for such an early mix! :-D
I really like how the bass really sets the speed and even some of the tone for this mix. It's all like "This might be some creepy haunted forest but we are bringing some funk to this town." and proceeds to bring some funk to this town.
Annnyway, yeah. It sticks very close to the source and, knowing how old school this mix is, makes it sort of understandable.
Still this is a very quirky mix worth checking out.

Great remix. One of the only reasons it sounds a bit dated is the absolutely rock bottom 96kbps bitrate!
Anyone know how to get a better quality version of this track?
Thanks!

Man I love the arrangement on this... but the quality :-( Chances are probably slim to none this ever gets revisited and cleaned up?

The beats totally rock it for me. I think it has some great ideas, although the samples are obviously not very polished.
It seems like the percussion is doing its own thing and has an overindulgent "throw everything including the sink" programming with instruments- long before this idea got popular with a lot of electro house and dubstep stuff. Although it goes too far in some spots (change-ups could be tighter and less jarring) it's still pretty fun and ambitious stuff for the day.

I have to say, this is probably like, in the top 10 remixes for the entire site in my opinion, perfect blend of melody, SFX, and transition from theme to theme... yep, perfect.
And damn, this mix is 12+ years old.
