OC ReMix at Otakon: Site Staff to Present Panel on Video Game Music ReMixing

For Immediate Release
July 16th, 2007
Contact: Larry Oji, larryoji@gmail.com

BALTIMORE–-OverClocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/../)), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and preservation of video game music, will have an official presence at the fan convention Otakon (www.otakon.com (http://www.otakon.com//)). The highlight of OC ReMix's participation will be a panel presentation on Friday morning at 10 a.m. featuring OCR submissions judges and the unveiling of a soon-to-be-released album project created by the Web site's contributors.

This weekend's convention marks OverClocked ReMix's second official presentation at Otakon, a convention which brings together fans of anime, manga, cosplay, video games and East Asian culture. First held in 1994 with an attendance of 350, the convention has since grown to over 22,000 attendees in the heart of Baltimore's landmark Inner Harbor to become the second-largest anime convention in North America.

The relationship between OverClocked ReMix and Otakon began at last year's event, as both organizations share a mutual interest in promoting fan participation. OverClocked ReMix's primary focus is a Web site that hosts fan arrangements of game music from musicians around the world, available for download free of charge. David W. Lloyd, a local resident of Fairfax, Virginia, created the site in 1999 with the goal of promoting game music through arrangement and reinterpretation.

"Otakon has always been aimed at fan participation--in what they love, not just consumption," says Jim Vowles, member of the Otakorp, Inc. Board of Directors. "Video game and anime music can be beautiful, not just catchy, and because we tend to live with it in repetition for hours, it quickly becomes part of our lives. These fantastic soundtracks have helped form a set of shared experiences that transcends cultures."

"OC ReMix is proud to be included once again as part of the programming during this great event," says David W. Lloyd, also known as "djpretzel." "We hope fans of our site will come and attend the convention and support video game music and fandom."

Wooooooo! Panel! Yay!

If you want to make it in time, be prepared to pick up your Otakon badges either Thursday night (between 5:00-10:00), or pretty darn early on Friday. We start at 10!

Just got my badge. Looks like I'm good to go for tomorrow. I'll see you folks at the panel, then! I can hardly wait.

By the way, line wait for me took about 1 hour, and that was with the line wrapping around three-fourths of the building. They're pretty good this year with efficiency in the line, so I'd estimate about a 1 hour wait on Friday morning (pre-reg and normal reg). <i>However</i> stuff could change, and this year might be busier than normal.

Getting in line right at 8:30 will <i>probably</i> be sufficient to get your badge by 10AM and make it to the panel... but it couldn't hurt to get there earlier. KF

QFE, i spent 4.5 hours in at con registration like at AX this year so early arrival helps a lot.

Heya all - no one here probably remembers me from way back when OCR first started, but I knew DJ Pretzel back in high school and wrote a track or two here. I was stoked to see OCR make it to Otakon last year and caught the tail end of the panel. This year I'll definitely be there and would love to hang out a bit. Will be sure to make the meetup lunch.

Myself and a friend of mine will probably be getting more involved here as we begin to compose seriously for the video game industry. Gotta keep the chops up, and composing remixes also means studying game music. I'm looking forward to it!

See you there.

I can't wait. I'm already in Baltimore, my friends and I have our badges. We are SO ready. I'll be going to the panel, and then I'll be joining the group for the meetup and lunch. Though I'm looking over the materials from registration, I haven't had a change yet to decide what else I want to do since this is my first Otakon.

Anyway, see you all there!!!

I was just curious, but where's everybody staying for Otakon? I'm staying at the Rodeway Inn off of route 95 (for those that know, it's a truck stop, but was the most economical place to stay) But yes, that's where I'm at. I was just curious where everyone else is staying.

Also, I'll be at the panel in the morning and then be with for the subsequent meetup after.

I am going to be there early, and for the love of mike if you have to wait in line be smart and bring some effing water! It does get hot out there! Anyway, ciao, see you tomorrow, and don't be like the guy I saw at the light rail station today who was operating on nothing but four hours of sleep and mountain dew. That guy is skinny as hell.

I just wanted to let everyone know, the panel was awesome! I had a great time, and very much enjoyed myself. Don't forget about the meetup tomorrow (Saturday) as well. Today's meetup was fun as well, I had a good time.

Also, if anyone wants to hang out with me this evening that's still at the con, feel free to find me in the dealer's room. Also, at 10pm I'm going to the Podcaster's Roundtable in Panel 1 (Rm 337-338 at the Pratt Street Entrance).

Awesome panel! Loved every minute, the crowd was really great, and the meet-and-greet afterwards, while busy with filling shirt and CD purchases, was still very excellent. Thanks to everyone who came out to see the panel, who participated in the activities and everyone I talked to personally.

I was so glad to meet MIDIman, DJ Carbunk1e/Xaleph, Dale North, and injury for the first time, and hopefully we'll all be hanging out later this weekend!

Whewwww... Just got back to Dave's, and we're all pretty exhausted after the 3 hours of sleep yesterday. Had to get up at 5:30 this morning. I might try to post what pics we have so far, but no guarantees they'll be up tonight. SO tired.

It was fantastic to see you all out there today! Thanks for all the support; what a crowd... Lots of new faces! Hope to see even more of y'all tomorrow. :<

Wow... The panel was amazing. Pixietricks, zircon, djpretzel, Larry, you guys did an incredible job, getting the audience all involved and into it like that... This was the perfect way to kick off the convention; it certainly made all that effort with early badge pickup and leaving early Friday morning worth it.

Also, thanks so much for signing the Antrigravity album for me {^^}.

Anyway, for everyone else at Otakon, enjoy the rest of the convention! KF

Well, didn't quite make it to the dealer's room. No big deal, tomorrrow's my big day in the dealer's room, sometime between the second meetup, the Steve Blum autograph session and some weird panel later in the day.

I'm looking forward to the second meetup, hope to see everyone there!

Great seeing you guys all there - we're trying to head back today with Chaz again, but I can't seem to reach him.

We were exhausted when we came back, leaving at 4:45 am to head out to the convention was just insane but fun ^_^' I guess I'm saying I'd understand why he may not join us today (Saturday) - but Eko and I will be there!

Thanks guys for the panel, definitely a lot of great work put into it and the results were indeed awesome!

PS - it's also amazing that the guy played so many games, but didn't know what the konami code was. I thought the ppt game was pretty clever ^_~

Well, insurance pays for it, and I should end up making money because the Scion rims are ridiculously expensive for some reason. I can go buy some sexy non-scion rims (pimp my whip, yo) and I should end up with money left over from insurance. Plus I got free cinder blocks.

Anyone planning of being there at all tomorrow? I may head up for a bit, mainly just to spend some money in the dealers room, but if any of you are going to be up there tomorrow as well, i wouldn't mind hanging out for a bit since I didn't really get to spend a lot of time wiht you guys.

It was between 3 am and 7 am Sat morning....probably dark. I was sleeping 30 ft away. Dag.

My wheels were sorta special stock rims that came with this limited edition '06 tC I have, so MAYBE they are rare? I dunno...its hard to imagine STOCK rims being worth anything (other than to the dealer jacking the prices). Plus I scraped some curbs like a newb and my rims that were stolen had a couple gouges in em. Suckit, wheel-steelers! Geico looses in this instance.

Well it was fun, the parts that didn't suck anyway. :P

I probably should have gone with the rest of them to see the amazing person Larry was so bent on meeting; I felt the lure of the gaming room however and I must say I was disappointed this year as I was last year. The gaming room is not the place to introduce yourself to Gears of War, so I didn't even get in line to play it.

But next year...will be better than this year I hope.

And I'll have photos of me to post tomorrow (even though I'm staying home in order to do that).

One more thing: *thanks starla for the hug and for not breaking his camera while she was dressed up.*

And it's good to know that the people that picked them will more than likely enjoy them, rather than be disappointed. But don't take my word for it. [/Reading Rainbow]

Well, I have to say I very much enjoyed my time at Otakon. There's so much to say and do and speak of. For now, however, I will refrain, as I need sleep, and must also prepare to leave tomorrow (sunday) for home.

I took some rather decent pictures, and I shall enjoy posting them when I am once again home.

I'd also like to take a moment and thank the OCR panel, djp, zircon, pixietricks and liontamer for being awesome. As well as everyone who was able to show up at the panel as well as the two meetups.

Hopefully, I'll get to see many of you before I leave for home sunday, at the Eminence concert.

Hey Ninja-san, I was just curious what stand you were at. I visited artists alley twice during the trip. (Actually, three times if you count today's trip for Dan Kim so I could get fivre some pwnage.) Anyway, I'd also like to point out that the geetar is probably worth WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more than was spent to procure it. Which is awesome.

Something else I'd like to talk about, (and Kroze Arrowned, please forgive me for not being able to find you at the Eminence concert), the Eminence Concert. In a word: PWNAGE.

I have never ever seen anything like it. I feel so priviledged to have been able to see this concert. Piano Squall made an appearance as co-emcee, as well as Hitoshi Sakimoto. I was lucky enough to actually pick up one of Eminence's CDs, I bought Passion, two days earlier along with Piano Squall's CD. I had the chance to listen on the way home from Otakon, and I have to say, I'm very impressed with both.

Anyway...I've got so much to do, and so little time (ugh, work at 7am tomorrow), so I'll do my best to get photos posted. Also, I was unable to take any photos of the Eminence concert as it was, I was shaking the whole time, and couldn't get steady (though had you seen me during Time's Scars, you would've totally understood).

Yeah, here's a detailed account:

Andy and I found the already silver-bodied guitar for $30 on ebay... Plus another $30 for shipping. I ordered silver spray paint from an art store and he and Bahamut helped me paint the neck, headphones, boots, etc during the Philly meetup last month. I knew about BGC's wife's expertise in polymer clay design (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5182720), so I placed an order for all the custom SNES buttons with her. Once they arrived, Andy and I spray painted a manilla folder, and I used various glasses to trace the different circle sizes for the back of the D and button pads. A little adhesive, and we were good to go. Very pleased with the results, and huge kudos to Amanda for her precision! :D

Does it need to be said how exhausted I am? :sleepdepriv:

Great hanging out again, folks. I didn't catch many events, because I'm as far behind on anime as I am on videogames, but that last show we caught... some of you will wish you managed to see Eminence. AWE. SOME. In a dark concert hall, where no flash photography was allowed, my camera really stunk with the video, so after Kroze's camera battery conked, I only managed audio of the encores, to come later.

Here's the ice cream truck. (http://bronxrican.com/stuff/misc/tetrisicecream.mp3)

Plenty of photos at my end, but not many meetup pics, because I'm a fiend for cosplay snapshots, and that's what I've been up to the whole time. That's also to come later.

Can't wait to see photos of the panel! The video itself may take about a week because we weren't able to get the footage from Jiggles' camera directly. Also, really bummed we couldn't make it to the Eminence concert. That would have been a great way to end the whole shebang, I'm sure. Next year we'll probably splurge and try to stay somewhere closer by. Poor Dave had to drive over 2 hours every day just to get everyone there and back.

For those who wanted to know, the stuff Eminence played came from the following sources: Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Romeo x Juliet, Neon Genesis Evangelion, .hack//Liminality, Gundam Seed, Noir, Lia - Colors of Life, Odin Sphere, Xenosaga I and II, Chrono Cross, and Super Mario World.

I forget most of the individual track names, but for the Xenosagas they played Pain and Sakura, Odin Sphere had the main theme done, Chrono Cross got Time's Scar and Radical Dreamers, and SMW was a large medley (started with SMB1's Overworld, then all SMW tracks: Overworld, Sub Castle, Athletic, Time Up Warning, double speed Athletic, and finished with Course Clear).

One of the best parts, however, was when Hiroaki Yura explained how Yasunori Mitsuda got his job at Squaresoft. Apparently Mitsuda walked into the building, while Uematsu was sitting at a desk doing interviews with a secretary nearby. Uematsu first asked Mitsuda his background and all that, and then inquired as to if he'd ever heard of Final Fantasy. Mitsuda said that he actually preferred Dragon Quest.

After taking a few seconds to get over the inherent WTF-ness, Uematsu also asked him how he considered a potential job at Squaresoft. Mitsuda said that he just considered it a stepping stone.

So apparently if you want a job in the video game music industry, you just need to be a schmuck, and you'll get hired. :)

Also! Hitoshi Sakimoto likes yaoi.

I missed the meet up since I was busy taking cosplay pictures, even had to leave the panel a little early for a private photoshoot. I'm definetly going to make sure that I free up my schedule for ocremix related stuffs next year.

Its most likely gonna take a bit longer then a week...
Also the sound is gonna be crap because we thought you were recording the sound so we were talking and crap.

I was in the front row and have a handful of photos, though they're not of very good quality (on several of them, I didn't use the flash while y'all were performing). I could upload and link to a few of them if folks want? It might be better just to wait a week for the video and all. KF

Jiggles recorded the sound with his camera, so I don't think it'll be an issue. Still waiting on the footage from him, but it could be cool to use some shots from your angle as well. How should we transfer? ^-^

Jiggles is sending me the video in the mail...
This way I am working with uncompressed.
And yes, he did record the sound with his camera, but we were thinking you were also recording the sound so there was talking from us on it...

All - I had an awesome time hanging out! It was great to finally meet everyone. It was a bit rough jogging between essentially three different groups of people for the con this year and then missing Sunday entirely (ACK - including the concert!), but I definitely played my part in the advertising, passed out tons of flyers in the gaming hall, and was glad to help out. Definitely felt like one of the gang.

Sorry to hear about the long drive! If I heard earlier, I would've offered up my place since I'm only about 45 minutes or so away. I even hosted a bunch of people (i.e. too much drinking) both Friday and Saturday night. IMHO - getting a hotel no matter how cheap is the best way to go, even if its a bit far away. LIghtrail is awesome.

Anyway - check out new remixes <soon>. Gotta get this new job in place first.

Okay, I'm home.
Ready for the media?
I've got a freakin' ton, so I'm splitting the highlights into categories.
If it's alright with whoever merges these, keep each category in a seperate post to make it less of a headache.

Sean notches the comeback win by correctly identifying the high-scoring final tune selection. The word "fix" was probably muttered somewhere.

Dyne; The room SEATING capacity is 750. Even though we had empty seats, I don't believe they were more than 1/3 empty, if you look at some of those pics. My guess is ~500-600 people.

And finally...
The Audio
Music captured from the incredible Eminence show after Kroze's cam battery went kaput.

CLIP #1 (http://www.bronxrican.com/stuff/misc/eminence-radical.mp3)
Oh, yes, they went there: Mitsuda's "Radical Dreamers."

CLIP #2 (http://www.bronxrican.com/stuff/misc/eminence-encore1.mp3)
They said this encore piece needed no introduction. Please excuse the giddiness you hear from me.

CLIP #3 (http://www.bronxrican.com/stuff/misc/eminence-encore2.mp3)
One more encore. And we all expected "One Winged Angel."

End Audio

I'm all done now. Whew. What an awesome weekend.

Yeah, considering that people were lining the back *and* sides at this panel, I think 500-600 is a very realistic estimate. Woowheeeeeee! Great pics, José! Dyne sent me his (and he had a lot), so I'll post some highlights from him.

The VGL slide - look at how dwarfed we are by that screen o_O

Excellent pics there, Jose. Man...seems like a pretty wild environment.

What did Jill and Zircon perform in the OCR panel? Any other live performances in addition to them?

We performed DJP's Xenogears mix, "7YearsBroken"! It was the only planned performance, but Dave and Andy also did some live improvisations on video game tunes.

It was great to see everyone again and meet a few new people! Anime USA (http://www.animeusa.org/) and MAGfest (http://www.magfest.org/) are right around the corner!

MIDIMan, it was great meeting you... wish we had the chance to talk more! I'm not sure if you caught this but I do pro audio stuff as well so I love talking tech.

Jose; fantastic pics!!! I love 'em. You really did an awesome job of capturing the crowd vibe.

Dyne; The room SEATING capacity is 750. Even though we had empty seats, I don't believe they were more than 1/3 empty, if you look at some of those pics. My guess is ~500-600 people.

Awesome. I'm very happy to hear that. I can't wait for next 'con. :D

Here are a handful of the photos I managed to get:

Pixietricks + Zircon performing 7YearsBroken (http://www.lunar-net.com/kiz/ocr-panel1s.jpg)

Improv Mix: (1) (http://www.lunar-net.com/kiz/ocr-panel2s.jpg) (2) (http://www.lunar-net.com/kiz/ocr-panel3s.jpg)

I was also chasing a few of the Phoenix Wright group(s) for some more photos:

Gumshoe, Gant, and the Blue Badger (http://www.lunar-net.com/kiz/pw-bluebadger2s.jpg)

Excuse the low quality of a few of these; during the performance I was a bit averse to using flash or the red-eye flash. KF

Wow, you were sitting like one row up and a few seats left of me! Nice.

Hey OC Remix! I absolutely love this sight. I use this music all the time when I work out. just wanted to say I hated to miss the panel at Otakon, but I was in line for registration. Though I saw some of you at the Eminence/Sakimoto Q & A. Are you guys coming back next year? I would love to come to a panel and meet some of you guys. Thanks!

Hey bro, sorry you missed the panel this year, as we definitely had it pretty early, both this year and last. We'll see what we can do about a Saturday time next year so that fans don't risk being stuck in line at the start of the con. Otakon is a must every year for us now, so we'll definitely be there next year.
