For one day only, starting 12:01 AM on August 1st and ending 11:59 PM, you will be able to purchase my newest album Antigravity (http://www.cdbaby.com/zircon3) for a mere $5 at CD Baby. This isn't a digital download or a 'damaged' copy or promo; it's the shrink-wrapped physical deal. $5!

http://www.cdbaby.com/zircon3

In case you haven't seen me post about it before (or you've simply missed my sig), it's a breakbeat/electronic album featuring 13 songs and guest performers like pixietricks, Fishy, big giant circles, and GeoffreyTaucer. Numerous tracks have been "Track of the Day" and "Track of the Week" on garageband.com and many people in the community have already picked up one (or more) copies and enjoyed 'em. So if you've been on the fence before, now it's really a no brainer :)

You'll also be able to pick up tons of other great CDs at $5, and believe me, there is a lot of good independent music on that site you WON'T find anywhere else. :)

Wait, you lose money on this? Or is it that you're just not making as much per cd sold? I mean, if you're losing money on it, why adverstise the one-day price drop?

he wants us to be happy?

Fishy
08-01-2007, 06:06 PM
Well the site is the one offering the sale, not zircon, so I'm assuming zircon still gets the same amount from cdbaby per CD. It would be extremely crap of the site if he didn't get the normal amount.

I think I remember zircon saying he looses money selling them at full price anyway, or at least until hes sold enough albums to make up for it, but I can't remember the specifics.

zircon
08-01-2007, 06:13 PM
Not exactly... I'm doing the sale because I want more people to have the CD. And, from a boring marketing perspective, I hope that if you like this CD you'll stay tuned for future works and perhaps buy those too. When I say I lose money I mean that the CD sells for $5 (a price that I set, temporarily), CD Baby takes $4, and I get the extra $1. However each disc took about $1.60 to make so I'm not turning a profit.

On normal sales - be they iTunes, Amazon, or the standard $12.99 on CD Baby - I do make a little bit of money. All things considered through I'm still in the red from my $1,800 investment :<

Anyway, the bottom line is, if you want the CD now is the best time to buy it. Or multiple copies. I guarantee you will not regret it!

I decided not to list it in the "$5 sale" section because that forces you to buy 3 CDs at $5 to get the discount. I want everyone to get the discount :)

Yeah, I noticed that after I shopped around a little. Though a few CD's there were listed at $5 as the ordinary price. Luckily the other one I really liked from that site was just $5 too without any strings.

Sweet deal, though.

Edit: WOW I sold out? Awesome!

If you didn't get your copy, you STILL CAN on iTunes ($9.99) or my own website, a digital WAV copy ($11.99) - no shipping on either. $12.99 for the physical at Amazon isn't bad either, especially if you buy some other tunes, because you can get that free super saver discount.

Hey, like I said, it's not like it's gone forever :) $9.99 on iTunes, $11.99 for a digital on my website, and $11.99 (by next week) for a physical on CD Baby. I might drop the digital to $10.99 too, but we'll see... either way I think it's reasonable compared to most $15+ commercial CDs out there.

BTW don't forget to sign up for my mailing list - send a letter with the subject "subscribe" to list@zirconstudios.com. I send previews, prerelease info, special deals, and other cool stuff to everyone on it every month or so. You could have had the main price be $5 and still run it in the 3x$5 program, couldn't you?

That way people could buy Antigravity and my BTSB (http://cdbaby.com/cd/sgx) and Chroma (http://cdbaby.com/cd/sgx2) all for $15 :D. And you would have made $2 on the sale, not $1.

Oh wells.

This is what I got this morning:

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure
it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Wednesday, August 1st.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did.
Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year." We're all
exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Not unless I know there's a lot of demand for it, since it would cost over $200 to print 50 copies (and that is about the minimum that would make sense). You can always get the iTunes or digital WAV version though.

In any case, nice packaging. Though, they kinda skimped on shrinkwrap. I could open it up without using any tools of any kind. And I just cut my fingernails to the bone last night! Now, the kind where you need a knife and plyers? That's how you can tell it's high quality shrinkwrap. Shrinkwrap aside, sounds great, Zircon.

Wow Zircon, you really love that one progression. When in a minor scale Root- 6th- 7th- Root

I think I counted that or a variation of it about 5 different times.

That's alright, I think I have that sort of progression in like 11 of my songs.

Yeah, guilty as charged. It's unavoidable in electronic music, especially in trance... I think at least 75% of trance songs I've heard have it. It's just tough to make something serious/epic in a minor key, with a dance beat, w/o using it.

Yeah, Speed of Light is my favorite non-vocal track; that and Antigravity are the two tracks I'll usually replay several times. Although I really like the entire album from start to finish.

EDIT: You mentioned Geoffrey Taucer, Fishy, and bgc collaborating on it, right? Out of curiosity, which tracks did they do work on? I recognize GT's guitar on a few of them, just from having listened to his other stuff on OCR in the past, but that's it. KF

zircon
08-06-2007, 09:57 PM
GT did the acoustic guitars on "Breathing You In", Fishy did the electric guitars (layered w/ mine) on "Depth Charge", and bgc did the synth solo towards the end of "Nitronic". :)

Hey Zircon, how do you choose your album art, and who does it? Self-made or you hire somebody?

zircon
08-08-2007, 04:33 PM
My first CD had art done by Moose, some guy in the #soundtempest IRC, at the last minute. Nothing special. Impulse Prime was done by Global Trance and jmr, from these forums. For Antigravity, I went with Cyan_Ide - who periodically lurks here - since he designed my website and is a pro graphic designer. I'm very happy with it.

Interesting. I really liked the color scheme for "Antigravity." Anyhow, as for the music itself, I received my copy on Tuesday and had a chance to listen to it yesterday. Very very nice. I am not a musician, so I don't know the terminology used to describe this or that, but I have to say that it is a very enjoyable listen (especially when on the road).

Though I am not a musician, sound is very important to me, and thus I have spent lots of money on headphones and the like to get as faithful a reproduction as my wallet allows. Anyhow, that said, this album is very peculiar in that it can serve to entertain OR to provide a nice background music while working. This is not to say that the tracks are boring, by all means no! What I'm trying to say is that the tracks aren't so overpowering that they distract from whatever one may be doing, but if one stops and actually listens to it while working, one can only think "wow, this is some groovy stuff!"

Anyhow, congratulations on your achievements. Also, I had never heard Jillian sing before... I was pleased.

Thank you very much!!! You actually touched on exactly what I was trying to do, make an album where the music can be played in the background w/o being too obnoxious (or in a club/dance setting), BUT if you just listen to it, there's enough happening to keep you interested. So I've accomplished my goal :)

If you like Jill's voice, check out her thread in this very forum. She just posted a few previews from HER upcoming album, which we are collaborating on for some of the tracks.

I think you just sold me on this album, and I was already considering getting it cause of how much I like your stuff on the site. :-) This description fits Way Out West, one of my favorite acts, to a T. Their albums reward attention but permit inattention.
