View Full Version : Iron Man The Movie

I just saw the Iron Man trailer, and I feel sort of mixed about it... On the one hand, Iron Man is a classic character, and to see the slim, stylized suit on the big screen is rather impressive. But on the other hand, Tony Stark is a gigantic asshole in the comics, so I hate him.

It's almost like Marvel is trying to redeem him.

Anyways... discuss. And someone find a better version of the trailer, please. The one I saw was a shaky camera from Comic Con, and it's hard to make out any details.

Meh, I say as long as it's better than The Hulk and there are plenty of good explosions, I'll be content. I saw a behind the scenes interview of the production for this film and the Iron man suit looks pretty cool.

I suppose I should start holding these marvel comic movies to higher standards if they're going to make them to death....
but I'd probably just be setting myself up for dissapointment then.

There have only been a handful of good comic book based movies:

Superman I & II (Reeves)
Batman (1989 Burton, the best) and Batman Begins (I think it's overrated, but still good)
Spiderman 2 -- I hate 1 but many critics and fans like it, 3 is merely ok

Forget about the rest. After the bullshit that is the X-Men series, Daredevil / Elektra, Fantastic 4 / Silver Surfer, I've decided to watch every superhero movie with abysmal expectations and the faint hope that it might actually be decent.

I have yet to see a trailer, but...

As a casual movie goer, I have to say I'm pretty excited to see Robert Downey Jr. in this role. He's a great actor and I have no doubts that he'll be fun to watch.

I've usually gotten excited about the superhero movies (especially some of the favorites like batman, x-men, etc.) but the poor scripts and worse acting have really started to put a damper on the superhero trend. Ironman should be cool though for the spiff special effects alone, but we'll see how the rest of it goes I guess...:-?

I'm just wondering how different this is going to be from the Iron Man animated movie that was released recently.

Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, "Iron Man" tells the story of Tony Stark, the enigmatic heir to the Stark Enterprises fortune. A driven inventor and executive who seems to have it all, Tony is haunted by his dark side. Though he commands his empire by day, by night he secretly becomes "Iron Man," the living embodiment of decades of defense spending and innovation. Strapping on billions of dollars worth of state-of-the-art armor and weaponry each night to fight crime, terrorism and corporate espionage, Tony begins to crack under the strain of his fractured lifestyle and must ultimately confront the one enemy he can never beat - himself - "Iron Man."
Man, I so totally CANNOT wait to see this. A Bruce Wayne clone with Peter Parker angst AND lots of awesome digital high-tech special effects for the awesome digital high-tech super suit to boot. This movie's got it all!

Iron Man as a character, is pretty comedic. Tony Stark as not only his character image as well as a decently organized businessman, is very much an asshole. I'm not certain if Robert Downey Jr. can do that. But, I'll just hold my tongue and watch the movie when it hits.

Tim Burton's Batman makes me want to punch him with how little he understood any of the characters in it. Also, The first two X-Men movies were great thank you.

I'm going to see Iron Man tonight. Unlike the Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Elektra, or The Punisher, this one actually looks good from the trailers. I think it may have to do with the fact that Robert Downey Jr. is probably the perfect choice to play Tony Stark.

(keep in mind i saw it for free, so I'm bound to be optimistic)
They have to continue this new trend of getting good actors.

I gotta say out of all of the comic book movies, this goes on my top 5
(rough list)
1.X-men
2.Batman Begins
3.The Mask
4.Men in Black
5.Iron Man
6.Sin City
7.Mystery Men
8.A History of Violence
9.V for Vendetta
10.TMNT (live action)

personally, I think:

X3 was a cheap hollow excuse of a movie
The only fans of Elektra were middle-aged lonely men in trench coats.
Fantastic Four (1 & 2) were corny as hell.
and Hulk was a steaming pile of elephant dung

I'm sorry, but that movie was terrible. It seems like I keep thinking that while all others apparently love it like with Batman Begins, which I hated also.

I mean, the dialog is okay (snappy, but not witty..) but the plot is just borderline stupid all the way. You have the requisite boring romance subplot that makes no sense, you have the typical 'genius creating advanced weaponry inside a freaking cave within a week' and totally uninspired 'because they own some companies and want moneyzzz' villains and there you go. I do think it works pretty well as a send up for fans like with Batman Begins, but as a standalone movie, it is just one cliche after another.

Visually it's great but everything else felt rather rote. Still waiting for Wall-E for that next sure bet.

Even allowing for a black Nick Fury, I thought Jackson did a pretty bad job (funny, given that Ultimate Nick Fury's design is based on him).

Marvel's building up to the Avengers movie in 2012, and everyone that's in the Avengers-based movies (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America) will all be reprising their roles from their individual movies. It's partly the reason why Marvel waited this long to bust out the big names they really wanted to focus on.

The movie rocked for one reason. Marvel Studios themselves made it. They didn's sell some of their comic properties as they knew they'd be building up to the Avengers, and with Cap high up on the roster, they particularly didn't want to sell him up the creek.

And you have to love Stan lee's cameo where Stark mistakes him for Hugh Hefner. Brilliant. Overall though, Downey Jr as a recovering alcoholic? That's genius in itself.

As for the Nick Fury thing, at least it's promising to be better than David Hasselhoff's turn as him in the made-for-TV movie that Fox had about 10 or so years ago.

You're not alone. He's a good actor, but does he have to be in every superhero movie?
The clip after the credits seemed cheesy to me, maybe it's because I automatically heard his voice and my direct attention was shot to oblivion.

Well, looks like Sammy L.'s gonna be in a lot more superhero movies seeing as all these marvel movies are set in a continuous universe where they all link in with each other.

Although Ultimate Nick Fury was directly based upon Samuel L, there must have been a clause in his image rights contract that said something along the lines of:

If we use the "Ultimate" Nick Fury character in any upcoming Marvel movie, you have automatic first preference on whether you want to take the role on or not.
