View Full Version : PRC100: It's a Swingin' Web-spinnin' Celebration! (Spider-Man / X-Men) [RESULTS]
The People's Remix Competition 100
PRCv4-22
Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! (www.doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/PRCcommercial.wmv)
It's anniversary time once again. Before I start though, who would have thought I'd start a PRC on my birthday? And odder than that, who would have thought I'd kick off PRC100 when I turn 21? :D
But enough about the festiveness for now. For this special PRC event we have a few tricks up our sleeves. I don't have the fundings for any PRC memorabilia at the moment, but we do however have prize potential outside of that.
And when there's prizes, there's a twist and a cracking source tune. We will get to the twist when we get to the rules; for now, our source tune provider for PRC100 is from one of OverClocked Remix's senior judges and the bearer of the most colorful pubefro around - Larry "Liontamer" Oji.
It's Tim Follin again. The guy's a great musician, and I feel he gives the potential arranger a lot to work with.
There is a LOT of material to work with, allowing one to avoid complete sections of the composition and only focus on that which inspires them. And if you have a musical mind, you'll be able to think of lots of ways of adapting it and adding your own original ideas.
Enjoy, and good luck y'all. I'll be around to check on this one.
Are you ready for your source, ladies and gents? Because THIS is what you will be working with.

Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge - Spider-Man's Stage
MIDI (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/PRC100_spider.mid) | MP3 (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/PRC100_spider-man.mp3) | SPC (bev.wooff.googlepages.com/prc100.spc)
Now what is all this in aid of? Well, I still need confirmation from Larry on whether he's willing to or not, but odds are if you do really well with your track, he might even put you on Dirge of the Follin. It might be seen as a definite prize for the winner, but I still need more thought on that.
What I DO have thought on however, is that for one PRC only, this will be an ANONYMOUS CONTEST! That means that the music needs to do all the talking if you need to get up there, and there's two weeks to do it in, so what are you waiting for?
And now, I leave you to it. Start using your Spider-senses, people.
GOOD LUCK!
Fine Print:
PRC instructions If you happen to be mixing this song already, start over in the interests of fairness.
There is no limit on entry format or song length, but length for length's sake and MIDI rips are not allowed.
Entries must be emailed to submission@doulifee.com by TUESDAY, AUGUST 14th at 4:59am Eastern US Time. I will upload all entries that are submitted at the Compo ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC100) under the artist name "Anonymous PRC Contestant", and will reveal the artists once the contest is over.
You may enter as many mixes as you like and work with as many people as you like on each mix.
Do not make qualitative comments on an entry until the results of the vote have been posted.
Mixers cannot vote for themselves but if they vote they receive a free first place vote added onto their score.
Doulifée's PRC Archives! (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc.php) If you need help with hosting your mix, contact myself or Doulifée, and we'll help you out.

Ah great! More rockin' Follin tunes! =P
I'm pretty sure I'll be joining the mixing, while I don't have any cool ideas yet, I'll definitely come up with something. I'm happy that I got that wah-wah pedal for my guitar recently, so maybe I'll come up with something with that (since Follin uses it here too). I'll just say this source tune is going to be a bitch to remix, let alone improve on it, so it's definitely a challenge to win here =P.
Edit: Happy birthday by the way, I forgot to say that! =D

I've gotten into comics big time recently, so having this follow Silver Surfer is pretty sweet for me.
And happy birthday, Rexy!

I told you befor ebut, happy bday miss!
Well last time my take on the source tune was met with failure, so let's hope I have better luck this time. I played this game a lot too, so maybe that helps XD.
Good luck everyone!
EDIT: I also like that I have two weeks for this, so there's no excuse for people to try this out!

I dunno if I'm even allowed to participate in this round because of the special situation, but I'll probably be sitting out anyway. I need to focus my attention on writing and preparing for an AP discussion on the 9th (haven't started reading the book assignment yet >.<). And I have a little project of my own to see to, anyway. Not to mention I'll be gone half the time this competition is going on.
Ok, enough excuses for now.
Just to let you all know...I have chosen the next source tune. If you tried to say "extremely popular" and "completely ignored" at the same time, that game would appear in a massive explosion. I'm looking forward to it, and good luck to everyone participating in this round! I'll be around to vote.
And I'm working on an advertising sig, if anyone wants one. I'm putting more work into it, which usually means you'd better get out your sunglasses if you value your life.
EDIT: Ok, here's what I came up with. I tried to use that title-screeny thing, but I didn't like how everyone was covered up. So I just found some random pictures and there you go.

Ain't NOBODY gets a free pass into the Follin project. You gotta deliver. But if you've got something good, and it's not quite ready for primetime, I'll help ya through!

Oh man, Spider-Man / X-men! I have this game for the Genesis. I guess this song is from the SNES version, because it sounds a LOT better. Especially Breifing, Gambit, and of course, Spider-Man's theme. And Storm's theme is all ambient and stuff!
Larry talking about it made me go dig up the game again. It be HARD. 'Specially Gambit and Storm's stage. Rargh.
ANYWAYS, I would love to make a remix of this song. But I doubt that I'll have the willpower/ideas/I'm a procrastinator. Still I can't wait to see the results.
And a happy birthday to Rexy also!

Just posting in here to say Happy birthday Rexy!
Been a long time since we have talked and I miss ya girl.
Here is to a great year for you, and more to come!

How would I guess you'd say something like that? That's one of the reasons why I opted for an Anonymous contest this time around, heh.
Just out of question, whatif the winning track is one that you would refuse to put on the project? What do you think should I give the winner other than "bragging rights", per se?
Thanks for the birthday wishes for yesterday all :)

Holy crap. 100 already? I told myself I'd be in the 100th one, but man, who knew it was here already. Came a long way from #2. Ha, poop pun.
Larry's a douche. But I still love him like my own mother.
Now that I have spoken, let the trembling begin.

Meh, looks like I will be missing out on this one after all, I totally forgot that I'm going on a week-long holiday. I wish you all the best of luck writing a good arrangement, and I look forward to see what source tune Hylian Lemon has cooked up for PRC 101. Bye bye for now then, everyone =P

Bleh, I can't think of anything with this source.
Besides, I've got too many other ideas for musics and remixes and the like, and they are distracting me. I need to put these ideas to rest.
Good luck everyone else, though! :)

I have absolutely nothing. I waited and came back to it, and still have no inspiration for this one. I hope others have some good ideas.
With a few hours to go, we only have one entry. Even if more people chip in and we have enough for a voting stage in time for the actual deadline, I'm not going to be there to set it up anyway due to being out of town for most of tomorrow. An extra 24 hours has been added to the alotted time, so make sure you use it well.

Heh, I may be coming up with some stuff. Can't work on it now on account of being so tired, hopefully I'll have something or other ready by the deadline.
Okay, we've got a good number of entries. I'll be sure to get everything ready in the next couple of hours or so.
[EDIT: Well dang. There's some issues relating to flood protection, so unless I find another web host in the next 30 minutes the voting stage might be delayed.]
Right, the entries are online. However, due to issues with ThaSauce's flood control at the moment, the first few hours of the voting stage will run a little differently.
What you should do is listen to the entries and then if you don't wish to wait for the voting to be ready at ThaSauce, you can send me a PM with your vote (the ballot will be added once the vote servers come online). You just pick out three tracks and rank them from first to third. The contestants don't need to put their own entry in as they automatically get a first place vote.
You have until Saturday, August 18th at 4:59am EST to submit your vote. If Larry digs the winner's work, they might get acceptance onto Dirge for the Follin.

I thought about PMing her, but I figured that's what you had already done...
I had already decided the placings by the time I noticed, though. No worries.
Strange, most people said that they didn't tag the Artist field. I'll look into it; it's hard enough trying to host these tracks on ThaSauce anyway, at least at this rate.
[EDIT: okay, even if I DO mess around with the artist field, it looks as if ALL operations have to take place outside ThaSauce for this one competition. Not even renaming artist fields at ThaSauce would let me host more than one entry as "Anonymous PRC Contestant". This is getting a little awkward if you know what I mean. o_O]

i'm wondering why i spent money to maintain a webspace and a bandwith ?
Ah, Doulifee; I know you might have been a little angered by the positions of the web files, but the big issue for me was whether your FTP server would be fast enough to get the entries up ready for voting. Sorry if I disturbed you with the move; if I see you on MSN tonight we'll discuss it.
The tags have been fixed, however ThaSauce STILL won't let me host more than one entry, even if I use different accounts (must be an IP restriction system, I see; nice work analoq :D). I suppose PMs will have to be used for the source of this competition. I'm also willing to add an extra day to the voting to make up for this early hassle.

Why not just recruit some people to download the files from the links provided and upload them as "Anonymous contestant" on the compo page? Provided you can move it back to entry stage. Then again, maybe it's too much trouble.
EDIT: Oh, it's still in entry mode. Are you cool with several of us each grabbing one of the songs and uploading?
I don't even know if I can find any willing volunteers to be honest. It was hard enough just trying to push through the servers every way possible to try and go beyond one entry online, but in the end, it'll be less hassle to just stick with the OCR PM method.

file are available as soon as they are hosted afaik. and for the positions of the web files, name and idv tag i don't care really during the processing stage of the competiton. I just need proper order/tag once everything is done.
you are technicaly the competiton holder, so you can use the webspace as you wish to make the competiton run smoothly. i repeat myself here, i just need order for long term archiving.

Hmm. So are our voting comments going to be posted or are we just PMing a list of our top three entries without reasoning?
And should I send my song choice along with my vote? I guess it would give you more time to prepare all the stuff...

I have voted! Hope I did it right.
Yeah, the way I see it is that once the contest is over, I will open up the PRC100 post at ThaSauce as if the contest was still going on, and then everyone can submit their entries (or if three people contribute I could submit the other and edit the name field when doing so). The scores will be inputted with no problem, though the votes would be given a transfer to Douli's server given that I feel that I would face the same situation when trying to host the mixes at TS all over again.

I have no idea how the system works, but if the problem is the same name being repeated, could each mixer's name be, "Anonymous PRC Contestant 1",
"Anonymous PRC Contestant 2", etc.?
The IP thing shouldn't be a problem since people are allowed to submit more than one mix, if I remember correctly. No one has done that using Tha Sauce Compo though.
The problem is, I discovered the fact that multiple entries are impossible at ThaSauce. I did consider trying to make multiple accounts, however in spite of operating with duplicates the system still says that the Anonymous PRC account "has already entered". Odds are the server would sense IP numbers rather than user names, interestingly enough.

it checks for unique usernames as well as IP addresses. the system thought you were trying to flood the server, so it stopped you.
sorry about the mess, i haven't been paying attention to the forums much lately so i didn't know this PRC would be a special case.
i guess it's too late for me to solve the problem? next time, just let me know what you need beforehand, and i'll make sure things run smoothly for you.
cheers.
No worries, Aaron. I just never realised the server would act that way to be honest. Either way, sure, I'll discuss with you beforehand prior to getting something launched.
I don't even have a clue how the ThaSauce servers might even react, so this is what's going to happen. This PRC's voting will end as normal early Saturday morning, and once that happens I will give the contestants the opportunity to host their tracks on the ThaSauce servers. Due to concern relating to any potential alteration of the standard PRC signature when it comes to timings and whatnot, PRC101 will also begin tomorrow as well. I might as well mention it here before I get any mass mail saying "when's PRC101 coming" and stuff like that.

I'm just back from a Introduction week at my new school, I saw I only had 25 minutes to vote and LISTEN to the songs. I just PM'ed Rexy. Hopefully in time.
Great songs.
Time's up. It's time to total the points and see which one swung into first place. Plus, we're also going to reveal who did the individual songs.
Total number of mixes - 4
Total number of votes - 6 (wut?)
Highest possible score - 18
Jaybell sent Flashing Blue Bits into last place with 7 points.
Anorak and his work with Bad Bb Bricolage were assigned for third place with 10 points.
GSlicer wrote August and reached second place with 15 points.
And the winner of PRC100, with 16 points, is Uncanny Orchestra by Nutritious!
Wow, I never thought that an anonymous contest would end up in this much of a pickle :p Justin, you managed to work well. I'm assuming by Larry's reactions to your work for PRC99 that you could have potential to polish up your track for Dirge, so you know what to do. The rest of the path is all up to you on how to impress the pubefro master. :)
PRC101 will be launched in 7 hours. For now, I will open the ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC100) for the contestants to upload their entries to the server. Sorry for any hassle relating to TS's system, and I hope to see you all again this afternoon.

This being my first PRC, I have no idea what that means. Someone help?
