View Full Version : What NES game should I play?

I've found my old ROM collection back form when I was a kid. I've got a whole bunch, and I'm not exactly sure where to start. What are some of the 'must play' NES games?

Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando - No jump (don't need one), a long bionic arm that allows you to navigate and swing around as well as grab enemies. And you have all kinds of guns that can be used with the bionic arm. Cool stages, good music, and difficulty. And a very strange final boss.

Ninja Gaiden (all of them) - Awesome story, music, and true ninja-like game play. Arguably the first game to introduce movie-like cutscenes to enhance the feel and story of the game. The music is amazing on all three, although there seem to be plot holes on the third game. You will get your ass beat.

Blaster Master - Awesome adventure where a young country boy tries to find his toad, finds a power suit and power tank, and ends up battling evil aliens under the earth. Awesome gameplay, upgrades galore, and thank Jesus for save states because it is looooooong.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master - Cool gameplay, feeding monsters and take their powers, travel through diverse worlds, big badass weapon you can't use until the end, wicked good music (typical for NES games), and very challenging.

Dragon Warrior 1, 2 ,3 ,4 - Early-style turn based RPGs that are fun to play and will cause you to die numerous times. Cool atmosphere.

Battletoads, Battletoads and Double Dragon, Double Dragon 1 and 2 - All of these are great side-scrolling fighters/platforming games that demand your attention. Look out for awesome music, killer special moves (read some FAQs, you don't want to miss anything), and big bosses that will beat you without mercy.

Zelda 1 and 2 - No explanation needed. Yes, Zelda 2 is much different, but an awesome game, and they both deserve to be beaten by you.\

Megaman series - At least try the first three, and 4-6 are still quite good. Not only do these games require good reflexes, strategy is very important - choose the right stages and choose the right weapons. Music is grandiose, so much that it has spawned tributes like the Megas and the Protomen. Control is solid as well.

Metroid and Kid Icarus - Just fucking do it. I dare you.

If you like puzzle games, then go for Tetris, The Adventures of Lolo (1-3, they are all good and will fuck your brain)

Extended learning: After you grow some NES balls, you should try some more experimental games: try Snake Rattle and Roll, Street Fighter 2010 (actually quite good if you learn to actually play it), Cobra Triangle, Karnov, Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, and Panic Restaurant

Now, be prepared, and make sure you have a good controller to work with too.

River City Ransom.

I'm sure there are others that I can't think of at the moment. I'll take a look at the ROMs I got once I get home for more ideas...

EDIT:

Street Fighter 2010 is great (I had the cartridge itself back in the NES days). It's incredibly difficult, but a really fun platform game once you get good at it.

Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle was a good puzzle-ish platform game, also.

If any of these are too hard, well... There's always abuse of save states.

Oh... Mike Tyson's Punch Out! There's another good one. KF

+1 to Blaster Master, Kid Icarus, and Metroid. I also loved the original Metal Gear. Aside from the great gameplay, this game is worth experiencing if only to be shown how far localization has come in 20 years.

As far as making a NES controller work with your PC, Google seems to think that it is a rather complicated process involving soldering etc. However, there do seem to be SNES controller to USB adapters out there for sale.

My favorites are Kirby's Adventure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby%27s_Adventure), Super Mario Bros. 3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._3), and TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_III:_The_Manhattan_Pr oject).

I'd also recommend checking out DuckTales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckTales_%28video_game%29), Captain Skyhawk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Skyhawk), Adventure Island II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_Island_II), and Thrilla's Surfari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_%26_Country_II:_Thrilla%27s_Surfari). I don't see them on many recommendation lists, but I think they're alright games.

Play the Japanese Castlevania 3 (Akumajou Densetsu.) Vastly better music (VRC6 chip,) slightly better graphics and gameplay.

Madara is a good Konami RPG that also has excellent VRC6 music, and is Japanese but has a translation hack (go to Aeon Genesis.) A little inconvenient in the gameplay department, though.

I want to see the Lagrange Point translation finished!

I believe RedOctane has a pretty inexpensive PS1/PS2 -> USB converter. I use that, plus a first-generation (no rumble or analog) PS1 controller always, and have found that to be the best controller in general.

The thing is, all the $20 controllers I've found designed specifically for PCs have crapped out quickly and been pretty poor quality. Those old PS1 controllers were designed to take decades of button-mashing, so they hold up much better. On top of that, you have plenty of shoulder-buttons to assign to extra emulator functions (like speeding up/slowing down/reversing the game, save/restore states, etc.). KF

I had once played this weird game as a child called Monster Party that felt like a really bad dream only I was beating the shit out of it with a baseball bat and turning into a flying nightmare dragon thing. Then there was Little Nemo: The Dream Master which was the total opposite because I was throwing candy at things and turning into bees and frogs and shit while riding giant toy trains.

Man, I played some trippy games as a kid.

Gonna have to agree with any Mega Man game, along with Metroid, Punch Out!!, Super Mario 1-3, TMNT, Zelda, and Double Dragon...especially Mega Man 3, Metroid, and Punch-Out!!.

I also recommend 1942, 1943, Castlevania, and Ninja Gaiden. I know there are more, but those are the ones which come to mind right away.

Monster Party is cool on its weirdness alone. The beginning, when everything changes in front of that giant tree, it's just freaky as hell. Don't forget about fighting kabobs, onion rings, punk rock guitarists, house cats, and upside-down naked people buried in the ground.

Yes.. YES!!! Mario 3.. I still pick that up every month or so and play.. not Allstar version.. Itchy4tasty NES goodness :O

I'm going with MegaDave.. goes without thought. Kid Icarus and Metroid. Big emphasis on Zelda 2. I also liked Yoshi I think that's what it was called.. stacking all the bloopers and such.. stuffing them in eggs when you can.

Star Tropics

Second one would be easier to get into nowadays, but the first one is the better game in all respects. It's ridiculously hard, as most NES games are. Word of warning: You will need to go to GameFAQs at least once during the game.

In addition to the others mentioned, play Clash at Demonhead. It's a great alternative when you burn out on Megaman (which you should if you play NES enough).

Well, I'm currently using FCE Ultra, and my only problem is the audio dumps and file locations altogether. Other than that, everything else is pretty much cool. I haven't heard anything about RockNES.

Man a lot of these games are bringing back some great memories. I really can't recommend any others that hasn't been said already. As far as an emulator, Dhsu, I use Jnes. I haven't had any problems with it and it will run nicely in a window. Now if I can just get a good N64 one that won't act all funny at a higher resolution....

Agreed on the Mega-Man games as well as Mario 3.

Metal Gear 1&2. If you play Metal Gear 1, then search around on the internet for a way to make it through those 1-screen mazes. They aren't worth spending the hours it takes to blunder through, though the rest of the game is good.

...and you can't beat the engrish: "Oh-oh! I feel asleep!"

Zelda 2. I know many consider it blasphemy, but I liked it better than Zelda 1.

Contra.

Metroid. Though I still hate bomb-climbing to this day.

As for emulators, I use NESticle, though I really can't recommend it. It works, but I am sure that there is better.

In two player mode, that game inevitably results in somebody hitting someone else with a box, and then it descends into throwing boxes at each other so that you can throw each other into holes. Which is, of course, exactly how it should be. :-D

I've had the best results with FCE Ultra myself. It runs pretty smooth, has all the standard features (save states, speeding up the game, etc.), and the hacking features are likewise pretty good and relatively easy to use.

...how in the world did that get past--oh, it was unauthorized.

I was under the impression that the only company that managed to really sell 'unauthorized' games was Wisdom Tree (the makers of Bible Adventures, Sunday Funday, and Spiritual Warfare. ...Spiritual Warfare is actually not that bad if you can overlook the whole 'smite the heathens' theme.)

...come to think of it, you might want to go ahead and get Spiritual Warfare. KF

City Connection... while an annoying game when it comes to controls, plot, and music, other than that, it's quite addicting. I actually want to attempt to remix the music of the first level...

Hm. Any way I can get an NES controller to work with my computer? I bought a NES -> USB cord online for about $20. I forget where, but look around the net for it.

Adding to the list, personally I like Bomberman 2, Paperboy and just last week I tried Baloon Fight (the game the WarioWare series continually shoves up your ass ). As simplistic and arcade-y as it is, it is a pretty decent game FWIW.

Also, since we're talking emulators, look up a ROM called Dance 2000. It's an attempt to make DDR for the NES. It only half-works but it's pretty funny.

If no one has mentioned Crystalis, then everyone in this thread is a failure. Best overhead zelda-style game for NES hands-down.

Star Tropics

Second one would be easier to get into nowadays, but the first one is the better game in all respects. It's ridiculously hard, as most NES games are. Word of warning: You will need to go to GameFAQs at least once during the game.

Holy smokes! I never even tried the second one...but the first was my first RPG-ish victory.

if it hasn't been said (and I doubt it has been) then Caveman Games. Ahhh, memories of dragging your wife to the line, then hurling her downrange for distance. Good stuff :)

Double Dragon II ! <3 (but absolutely positively not Double Dragon III (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMg6_IXCjo4))

Also G.I. Joe; Killer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6Sx1HPqTIw&feature=PlayList&p=34B48E66C3238FC9&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=91) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pzd9uUsC4o&feature=PlayList&p=34B48E66C3238FC9&index=92) that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUS7xcFKSv4&feature=PlayList&p=34B48E66C3238FC9&index=93) needs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL2WydAnobI&feature=PlayList&p=34B48E66C3238FC9&index=94) remixing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zquC6frGAFg). Actually, that goes for DDII as well.

Good thing Sixto remixed (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01506/) the best song from DDII. I remember when I first found it; I completely flipped out! :D

Bionic Commando

No way. You can play the new remastered version on the 360 for a cheap priced download and it owns the old version pretty hard.

This topic doesn't seem to have been used in a long time, but this my first ever post on this forum. I've been coming here for a while and figured I should just register and talk in the forums.

As for NES games you should play, here is my list.

1. The Guardian Legend
2. Batman
3. Legacy of the Wizard
4. Life Force
5. Capt. Skyhawk
6. Gargoyle's Quest 2
7. Super Mario Bros. 3
8. Overlord (civ. builder type game but still fun)

This guy wins for The Guardian legend as #1 suggestion

I'll double it by saying "PLAY GUARDIAN LEGEND"...

totally wanna remix some of those songs... but i've got a lonnnnng way to go before I can..

Used to own that cartridge.

Grab a friend and play Silkworm. That game was lots of fun. The first stage music begs me to remix it everytime I hear it. TMNT 2 also!

The original super mario bros 1 and 3. All-stars just doesn't cut it, the music's not as good and the levels just don't have the same feel.

Really?

It felt the same to me, just a graphical overhaul and the option to save in the middle of the game where as the originals didn't have that. However one ought not to ever need to save in the classic games
