What did you think? Post your opinion of this ReMix.
Dude. NICE. I like this a lot. The beginning is quality and arranged very well in my uneducated opinion. I really like the use of the french horn (used to play some horn myself :)), but it's kinda quiet I think. It gets a bit drowned out by the other instruments. Ok so the beginning is nice, but it's not my favorite style ;)
Then I hear those pads! Man! I REALLY like those pads! This is going in a more electronic direction (my favorite!). You've got the pad going, some synthy arpeggios, but still the very organic/traditional cellos going and I love that. Then the cruched up drums pop in and I'm loving the groove going here. This is my favorite part of the song.
The song gets a bunch more trancy now. I like the drums. They sound trancy, but they don't stick to the booooooooooring generic trance pattern that I hear a lot around here.
This mix seems like it should be like 12 minutes long instead of 6. I would have loved more development in the techno section and the trance section. Especially the trance section. It sounded like it was just getting started and then the end of the song came around. The orchestral ending kinda came out of nowhere. It was good, but there was hardly any transition into it, so it felt a little tacked on.
Very cool! Quality! Interesting!

I really liked that remix by SS - great work incorporating the Undersea Palace theme (a fav to begin with) into the mix! I'd like to see more remixes like that. I'd also like to see a remix done of the Vanilla Dome theme in Super Mario World - somebody should add a nice groove to that song. Just a thought.

This is really nice. I've been toying with the idea of a song that epic trance is the symphony of electronica, and here we have both classical and modern mixed all together into a good remix. Well done.

Great remix!
I'm no big fan of the Cid theme. It's a bit too epic for me. It almost gets parodical. And therefore, I don't really dig the long orchestral intro too much. But when it gets into that electronic groove somewhere around 3:30 I just love it. Had it all been done in this cool style it had been more my cup of tea. The trance beat is a bit boring though.
Ah well.... even if I don't like the orchestral parts as much, they're still very well done. And I like the hybrid idea. I would have liked some more electronical touches in the beginning of the song.
And I agree with SuperGreenX... the trance part does need a little more time to evolve.
Hah... I only took up my negative thoughts here. I hope you don't get me wrong, because like I said, I DO like the remix. It's great.
I like the chrono trigger one better though...

Don'tcha hate it when someone steals what you were about to say? *pouts*
Seriously, though, I like this one a lot. :) FF7 and CT's soundtracks were made for this kind of thing.

Sometimes you can define an artist's style because he or she does things in a unique manner. I can always tell a Star song cause he does things I never heard or ever will hear in other songs. This song lacked neither in quality nor arrangement. Love to see this kinda stuff.

FF6 > FF7 & CT :P. Sorry, had to comment on that since people seem to give those games more credit than FF6 :(.
Edit: Since Rexmaster PMed me, I'll give a more justified post. The purpose of that was not only to display another view, but to show the obsurdity of the other post in a subtle way, since that person put something in besides the purpose of a review (I intended to give a review, but not at that moment because I was kinda busy - I didn't get to listen to the song at that point). True, I am party to the same silliness through the unedited post, but I hoped through my (intentional) mistake that that point would be gotten across...(and for the record, I appreciate FF7 and CT too, but people seem zombified by those soundtracks, not to mention the games in general, that they only confine their musical preferences...)
Anyway, this is an interesting remix, mixing some marching elements, with techno and orchestral. My biggest complaint is the string instrument samples, while flowing nicely in their own way, I'd prefer live instruments :P. So I'm a big fan of string instruments, shoot me (I like it more than the overplayed guitar oftentimes). Despite this thought that maybe live string instruments would make it nicer (well, the advantage of the certain sample is that the instrument transition a little later appears almost unnoticed), I'd have to say it's a good remix.
Oh, and around the more technoish area of the remix, something just seems a little weak in the mood setting. It might be because of the background drums, but the low volume level was ideal for the smooth transition to the ending, which fit the overall mood of the piece. Tough call though, since changing that would mean changing the whole interpretation.

So far I don't hear anything that sounds like Chrono Trigger.. It's all Cid's theme from FF7.
Edit: Nevermind, I tend to comment too soon then I realize how horribly wrong I was.

I never really liked Cid as a character in FFVII until he gave his speech about the importance of science. That made him automatically one of the coolest VG characters ever.
On the other hand, I always loved Cid's theme song, and I hoped Russell Cox or someone would do an orchestral ReMix. Everything up until about 1:45 was pure gold - everything I had hoped for. The shift into the palace theme was nice, but then there was the techno/trance section, which unfortunately made up a good portion of the ReMix. To me, all techno/trance 'music' sounds grating and generic. I know some people appreciate the style, and I respect that, but it's all the same to me. Otherwise, this was a great ReMix: it reminds me of the first 49 enjoyable seconds of Temporal Distortion.

The ominous fell of the beginning is great, and it only get built upon with the addition of extra instruments. The transition to the techno section was superb, because you had the orchestral part lingering for a while as it got replaced by the more modern instruments. However, as this section builds toward the end, it seems to abruptly end. Actually for me, this was a bit of a relief as it had fallen into a boring pattern, and the ending is phenomenal. However, if you could have built up the trance a little more before ending, the song would have had some more flare I think. On the whole however, this is a pretty good mix.

Thanks for listening, everyone!
I would have loved to build on the song more... but i'm usually not good at doing that in a 6 minute timeframe. All of my originals are around 9 - 15 minutes and so i'm usually able to develop nicely. I suppose that's something I should work on...
Anyway, thanks again for all your support!

I don't think anyone would have minded it being longer. Were you restricting yourself to a 6 min timeframe(Or was that restriction foced opon you)?
Seriously, I really think it could have benifited by having more time to grow. I didn't find anything really wrong except for it's time, the trance section seemed to just get going when it stopped. Now this was a cool way to end it, it just made me really wish for more.

Well, the song has to be under 6 megs, and If i had started anymore development, I would have butted up against the limit. as it stands its 5.7 megs at 128kps. Personally, I dont like putting anything out unless its at least 160. I used to not be able to even tell the difference. But when you listen to the song 100000 times in wav format and then encode it you can hear every detail :D
Anyway, hope that answered your question.

yeah i liked this remix, its in my kazaa lite folder for listening now ;)
hmm , about half way through you use a piano , it sounds like its gonna be the music when the shinra rocket is blasting off but its not.
Maybe you should try the the shinra rocket blasting off. just make the tublar bell sound a piano and see how it sounds *shrugs*
Like everyone else, I find that your composition is great, Star, and the melding of the two tunes is good.
However, I seem to be the odd man out, in that I really didn't want the Orchestrated Cid's theme to stop..
It's not that I have anything against Techno, Trance, or the Undersea Palace theme (Which I all like), but I thought that the first part of this mix was just fantastic, and I would have liked to have seen what would have happened if you only used Cid's theme, and left off the Palace theme and Techno altogether. Or even, leave the techno in, but only use Cid's theme song.
Again, I enjoy your mix immensely, it's playing in the background from my hard drive as I type this. Good work, and thanks for the music :)

I just noticed that there might be some confusion. DJP didnt mention that the second half of this song is from chrono trigger. So in case any of you are ridiculously funcused, the second part is the Undersea Palace theme from Chrono Trigger.

Overall, quite a nice song. Excellent transition there between songs, it actually took me a moment to notice that it had moved into my favorite Chrono Trigger song. I don't think too much of the techno - it kind of sits there, playing the same boops and beeps, and is rather overstated in my opinion. Personally I'd like it better if those strings and such were brought in more, with the beeps and boops somewhat muted.
The drum patterns towards the latter portion of the song are kinda stale. Top hat, kick drum, top hat, kick drum/handclap. Tssh-clap-tsh, tssh-clap-tsh. Dun, dun, dun, dun. Countless techno songs utitilize this very same pattern, and it's... old.
So anyway. Push the beep arpeggios to background support, lift up the symphonic goodies to a semi-melody that compliments said arpeggios, institute some diversity in the drum kit, and this would be one of my all-time favorites. As it is, it's just a song I like.

Wow! I can't believe you pulled this off! Well, I can believe you pulled it off, but I can't believe you pulled it off so well! I noticed most people have problems with this mix because they like either classical or techno, but not both. Some people say you shouldn't have put the techno in, and others say you shoulda made the techno part longer. :D I think it's awesome the way it is, and is incredibly well done. I think it's good to see such a good batch of new remixes. Some of the best remixes I've heard in a long time have come out so recently! It's kind of a shame though that this mix has to be classified either FFVII or CT, even though it's both. But it's so good, anybody looking for a good FFVII shouldn't mind a little CT thrown in. <=)

Normally i give pretty in-depth reviews but its really not needed here, good stuff. My only complaint is there are some volume issues (some isntruments are a bit too dominant) other then that, it sounds awesome. It'd be nice if i could get this encoded at 160kbps instead of 128.
the clarity of the sounds, the mood, and the strong sense of emotion thats portrayed through the mix simply can't be denied. On a more personal level, I was deffinitely diggin' the vibe toward the end of the mix.
I loved especially the trancy part; the transition was flawless... *is listening to the song again*
One thing though: I dont really get the reason for the transition. Is it experimenting, or just because you thought it would sound cool? Because it does, but you kind of lose the feeling of the earlier part of the remix, so to say.
Still, it's one worth keeping on my harddisk. :)

When I first heard this tune on ormgas, I heard something that sounded like Chrono Trigger's Ocean Palace, but when I checked the website, it said Final Fantasy VII. I didn't expect to find a remix of two great rpg songs in one. Great remix, changing from soft instrumental to a trance-like beat.

OH,Star, how you tease me so. First you impress me with your courage and then you seduce me with your wilder side... Um...yeah. I get a little carried away sometimes... But this truely is a very AWESOME remix. I love Cid's theme, and I wish someone else would do as a great an opus as you did for the first part, (maybe you can write more of it? please??), and the trancey techno under sea palace rules. You don't get much better than this. Actually...I don't think there IS a better...

I usually heard this remix b4 I go to bed, it made me sleep well for some reason :D...it's like u can hear the music song afar in your ears. Gotta love this song people!! Starduuude, you´ve done it again. Nice techno remix with some adds of other instruments, the two songs just melds together and makes somethin´ real cool. Great piece.
I must check up those other longer works.
hey dude nice remix man, the change from cid to undersea palace took me by surprise even though I read what songs you put in there lol. It's good dude. I can tell you worked on this for quite some time man. Good gravy! :D
And the orchestral part at the end was a very nice touch, very berry nice touch indeed! :D

The transition in the middle section is amazing. At first you have your rendition of Cid's theme and then slowly it builds to something so much more, and then before you know it, you're riding along with the current before you find yourself swept into the final section, that is not only catchy but so full of energy. There is such a huge difference between the beginning of the mix and the end, and it still fit so well together. To sum it up in one word: mileage. Awesome job, Star Salzman!

The transition between the two themes here is orgasmic. Well maybe not that sexual, but pretty damn impressive nonetheless. Transitions are make or break in a musical environment, with a stronger tendency to break. Thankfully, the transition was trained to make, and does so swimmingly.
I really love the orchestral workout at the beginning, moreso than the further two thirds simply because there's more melodic territory to explore with Cid's theme and with the great string and percussion work. Techno and the Ocean Palace theme just don't have that strong backbone to keep it from meandering. Still, I loved the entirety; everything makes sense musically and none of it becomes redundant. A stellar mix, overall.

okay this is just simply amazing.....no words can describe how well this piece was put together
the production and arrangement is just incredible. this mix is just epic, the piano with the compliment of the viola fitted so well for this mix. The transition to schala's theme was just flawless, very well done. 9.5/10
A nicely unexpected rhythmic change ups in the snare got my attention immediately, and the cool syncopated cello helped draw me in as well for the intro. A hard pullback into a full force melody worked really well, and then a more subdued repeat had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.
The counter melody writing was really nice, and for the most part the track was really solid. I'm not totally sold on the shift to 'Ocean Palace'; the modal shift made the song less hopeful and more tragic sounding, and I think it would have been better to have inverted the themes, or had it finish off with a final bombastic coda of Cid's theme to make it a dramatic and uplifting ending.
Either way, the execution on this track is very high, and is a good indicator of why Star's reputation as a premier remixer is so widespread.
Recommended.
