I admit to enjoying the living hell out of TF2, but I really bought the Orange Box for Portal. I have to say that it didn't disappoint. The humor throughout the game is genius! And without giving away the ending, the credits are hilarious.

Speaking of Orange Box, Episode Two is just as awesome as Half-Life 2, if not more so. While Half-Life 2 was a little on the easy side and Episode One was so frustrating and had so rewarding elements it felt like a chore, Episode Two is both decently challenging and full of insanely fun new gameplay mechanics.
Also, holy crap the story is going somewhere cool now. The ending snuck up on me entirely.

This is a double post because Portal is worthy of it. I have to say, I have no regrets that I did nothing but play Valve games and eat for the last fourteen hours.

I thought the ending was cool but the whole game feels like playing one really long Zelda dungeon with no variety. I want a sequel but maybe just a lil different.

Anyone check out the flash game (http://www.armorgames.com/games/portaltheflashversion_game.html)? Done by someone else, it's a 2D version. And if I had fun playing that, I'm thinking I should have fun playing the full version.
Not having played Half-Life 2, and seeing how fun just the 2D version is... maybe I will go pick up Orange Box.

Go buy The Orange Box at Circuit City or Fry's if you haven't yet. They're both selling it for about $40 this week after taxes, but I'm sure it'll be back to retail prices by Sunday.
I haven't played anything other than Team Fortress 2. Not only that, but I played only as an Engineer for the first 4 or 5 hours straight.
But after I break my addiction, I shall give Portal a try. And HL2.

To suzu: I think Orange Box is the only physical retail option. Although it doesn't make the limitation any less annoying, there's an option to transfer the HL2 and E1 rights to someone else via Steam, so you could get your money back by finding a friend to pay you for them.
Otherwise, it costs an exorbitant stand-alone amount on Steam.

Not surprising. The Source engine (on which all Valve games are currently built) uses DirectX quite heavily; something Macs don't support. Releasing on a platform without it would require some serious re-tooling of the games, which is probably why EA is handling the PS3 port.

Anyone else having trouble with the challenges? I've done all golds on the 'least portals' ones, and half the 'least time' ones... but I can't even get a bronze on any of the 'least steps' ones. There's just something frustrating about jumping out of a portal and having a landing cost me 4 steps.

Ok well for steps you need to realize that steps only count when you touch the ground with a certain force. So when you want to travel just shoot a portal on the ground where you want to go and another portal right below you. You should be in an inifinite loop of going through one portal and going straight back down into the other portal. When you exit through the portal of your destination quickly shoot another portal ( the color of your destination portal) and you will land softly and it won't count to your steps. This is probably the strategy that you will use the most in the steps challenges.

Australia got shafted (again). We have to wait till next week to get the damn game - the whole orange box for that matter. What's even cooler is, the guys at EB said they weren't even 100% that we'd get it next week. So, we pay more for games and gaming devices that we have to wait longer for and now we don't get access to Portal and it's friends for a full two weeks (or more) after it gets released in the States. It's bloody awesome being an Aussie gamer.

Awesome, thanks for the link on the whole "importing Half-Life into Portal" dealie! It's got a few bugs (getting stuck sometimes, portals not appearing, and Combine not actually shooting), but it's still very, VERY neat to be able to do what I wanted to do: Place a portal behind some Combine and blast them in the back of the head with a shotgun in my own safe little corner.

I was running it on my AMD 2400+ XP with 512MB Ram and Geforce 4 MX440. Didn't look great, but it ran fairly smooth. RAM is dirt cheap now anyway, so you should invest in some if you use your computer for more than surfing the web.

So, SO good. I bought this for $20 after all the hype, and at first I was skeptical. But it really is amazing. Fantastic atmosphere, great music & sound design, great humor, awesome gameplay. Took me about 4-6 hours total, I did die a lot (20-30 times) so I felt the challenge level was there. Not too many really annoying parts. The post-testchamber stuff is where I really began to enjoy it in earnest, particularly the end parts.
One thing that makes the game good is how it really makes you feel rewarded for figuring out how to do something. You genuinely feel smart and accomplished when you solve a difficult puzzle.

Yea, post test chamber stuff was the funnest part, WHICH is why I can't really wait for the next game with a Portal.
The game ITSELF seems like an experiment to see what kind of fun that could have with the Portal gun, and then after the testing putting it to a more "real world" less straight forward use. Now that the gun is loose....DUN DUN DUN

my roomie got it and finished in one sitting, I'm somewhere in the escape.
Fun concept, needs more real world (i.e. Halo or HL2) application.

Keeps crashing on my computer for some reason. What I've managed to play so far is pretty fun though. Now, if only I can get the damn game to play for more then 10-15mins without crashing...

A while back I kept getting errors to where when I have the high quality settings turned on for the games they would crash in a matter of minutes.
ESPECIALLY HL2: Ep1
So in my search to find a solution I found this on another forum which for me actually worked.
--- --- ---
Start Menu > Run > regedit
Surf down to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management
Double click on "PagedPoolSize". Hexadecimal is listed first. Change the "Value Data" to one of these below:
(Note: You only need to enter EITHER Hexadecimal or Decimal. They both are the same.)
Megabytes Hexadecimal Decimal
192Mb 0c000000 201326592
256Mb 10000000 268435456
384Mb 18000000 402653184
I went with the 384Mb option
Once I was done I made sure to reboot my computer.
--- --- ---
When I tried the game again it ran flawlessly as well as all of the source games.
If any of you guys encounter an error referring to something about DX8 Index buffer or something like that, try that solution as it may help

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeh, I'm pretty sure I've been having severe paged pool memory issues ever since I got my new rig. Halo 2, Portal, Hellgate London Demo and a couple of other games I can't remember have all been having a crash fest on me they all crash the same way (screen goes black, looping sounds). Gave your suggestion a go and it seemed to do the trick but I can't be 100% certain, only gave it around 5mins. After I gave Portal a go, decided to see if the Hellgate demo would work but it still had the same problem. Will get around to trying Portal again when I have time (longer than 5mins this time) and hopefully I'll be able to play the whole way through. Thanks again.

What exactly does this do?
It's an odd issue as it has to do with how memory is managed, in particularly with games that run on direct3d more so than ogl. My rig has about one gig of ram, plays Quake Wars, Quake 3A, Quake 4, FEAR+expansion beautifully, yet when it came to games that are dependant to direct3d, unless I was running on very low settings, would crash on me after a while.
I could be wrong, but my vid card was more or less catered to playing games likw Quake Wars (ogl) although it can play games like HL2 beautifully after I did the trick.
If any one else with more knowledge about the issue and how the trick alleviates the problem are more than welcomed to give more info.
Edit: Dunno, what's your system specs..? You might even have a hardware issue for all I know.
So I just beat it. I'm almost in tears at how awesome that was.
Also the first time I watched myself fall through a hole in the floor while stepping out of the wall at the same time bended my mind. My mind was bended.
EDIT:
Also chasing myself down an inter-dimensional hallway I made was one of the coolest things I've ever done in a game. EVER.
Sounds like someone never played Narbacular Drop (http://www.nuclearmonkeysoftware.com/narbaculardrop.html)...

Got to play Portal for the first time this weekend, and I've gotta say it's brilliant. I was expecting it to be good, but it turned out to be better than I imagined.

Portal was a triumph all around -- I can't wait to see HL2: Episode 3 now though...I hope they fully integrate the Portal gun into the gameplay.

A must-see for everyone, except probably those who are stilling waiting to get the game and don't want any spoilers or hints at how to complete the levels, though the guy does it so fast I doubt watching this video gives away much of anything except the silly humor valve implemented.

I think Groobo (the guy who did that run) may still try again for a faster time before submitting to SDA. There's actually a big portal thread on the SDA forums where he's contributing along with other portal enthusiasts and speedrunners on how to beat the levels in the fastest manner possible, so the video sort of did originate from SDA, but has yet to be submitted and posted.

Fucking hell, that was bar-none the greatest game I've ever played. Great idea, well executed with a beautiful sense of humour. The sudden change of atmosphere was superb, and the puzzles were challenging but do-able. Also, best ending/credits to a game aswell. I can't wait to see if they incoporate this gun into any other HL titles.
I loved the feeling of being this guinea pig to some maniacal AI that probably killed the entire Aperture staff itself. The way it tries to convince you otherwise was a constant source of entertainment.

"Good news. I figured out what that thing you just incinerated did. It was a morality core they installed after I flooded the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin to make me stop flooding the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin. So get comfortable, while I warm up the neurotoxin emitters."
"2+2 is… 10… in base four."
"There was even going to be a party for you. A big party that all your friends were invited to. I invited your best friend the companion cube. Of course, he couldn't come because you murdered him. All your other friends couldn't come either because you don't have any other friends because of how unlikable you are. It says so here in your personnel file: Unlikable. Liked by no one. A bitter, unlikable loner whose passing shall not be mourned. SHALL. NOT. BE. MOURNED. That's exactly what it says. Very formal. Very official. It also says you're adopted, so that's funny too."
"Look - we're both stuck in this place. I'll use lasers to inscribe a line down the center of the facility, and one half will be where you live, and I'll live in the other half. We won't have to try to kill each other or even talk if we don't feel like it."
This must be what SHODAN is like if she had the Girl's sense of humour. And Petulance.
I loled. I am still lolling.

So now wacky you see why everyone wouldn't shut up about this game just recently. I think the writing is probably the best of any game I've played.
"We had some fun though, right? Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I was all like "goodbye" and you were all like "NO. WAY." and then I was like "we pretended we were going to kill you!" That was great..."

I have portal sigs! HORRAY!
Now that you mention it, Wingless, where did those sigs come from? Because if I've got my timeline right, you had that sig WAY before portal came out.
