Welcome to FLMC8! (http://ocr.flmc.googlepages.com)

Yes, that's right folks, it's time for another fabulous round of the Fruity Loops Music Competition!

This month's source is
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/8633/kirbysbbxe7.png

Dammit, I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to run things.

VOTING TIME

Here are the entries, both project file and .mp3, zipped up:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/x4t4l2

If you want the .mp3s individually, here they are:

DDRKirbyISQ - FLMC8try3 (http://ddrkirby.googlepages.com/DDRKirbyISQ_FLMC8Try3.zip)

RocketSniper - KirbysCocklolfinal (http://rocketsniper.googlepages.com/RocketSniperFLMC8KirbysCocklolfinal.mp3)

Smenelian - Kirby's Block Boss (http://myspace.com/awesomelycoolstuff)

Bundeslang - NotinDreamland (http://bambombim.googlepages.com/Bundeslang-NotinDreamland.mp3)

I am implementing the voting system suggested last time. Entrants get 5 points for voting, but cannot vote for themselves. First place gets 3 points, second place gets 2, third place gets 1.

Votes should look something like this:

==============================================
Numbar one:

========(OLD COMPO INFO)==========

Here is the music ripped directly from the game. (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/gbs/Kirby%27s%20Block%20Ball%20%281996%29%28HAL%20Labo ratory,%20Nintendo%29.zip) (rightclick/save as)

If your music player does not yet play GBS files, OCR's own ChipAmp'll get you up and running. (http://www.chipamp.org/)

If you're lazy and just wanna make a MIDI rip, the MIDI's are in here somewhere. (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/gameboy/index-classic.html) (HOWEVER, if you actually submit a MIDI rip, I will personally hunt you down and eviscerate your reproductive organs. Not to mention it will be immediately disqualified.)

A quick recap of the rules for FLMC:

Music entries for this competition are arranged in FL Studio, using only default synths and samples. No external VSTs or samples (except for the sample pack) are allowed.

This is a competition open to mixers from all walks of life, be you the goddamn DarkeSword or someone with ABSOLUTELY no experience in doing this kind of thing WHATSOEVER.

* No Sytrus, DX10, Wasp, Soundfont Player, etc.
* You are allowed to use the FLMC8 Pack (provided by Smenelian) (http://ocr.flmc.googlepages.com/Samples.rar). or here (Sendspace) (http://www.sendspace.com/file/2au4uo) to download it.
* You may enter as many songs as you want.
* You may collaborate with other entrants.
* You must provide a FLP file (preferably in the form of a zipped project file). The only exception for this is demo participants (who cannot save FLP's).
* Demo version submissions are definitely allowed and fully encouraged.
* NO MIDI RIPS OR YOUR BALLS ARE FORFEIT

You may either post your submissions in the thread, or email them to OCR.FLMC@gmail.com

For anyone that does not yet have any form of Fruity Loops installed but has any inclination to remix some badass Kirby tunes should head over to http://demo.flstudio.com/ to get the demo edition of FL Studio.

And last, the submission deadline is DECEMBER 31st, 2007, 11:59PM EST.

Good luck!

As a side note, these rules are not absolutely set in stone.

I'm open to suggestions to make this compo even better.

DarkeSword

...

The Goddamn DarkeSword?

You know, I did do a remix (http://darkesword.com/listen/remix/mp3/herosofspace.mp3) of this game once, but I used my orch samples. Great game, great music.

Maybe I'll throw down.

Maybe I'll throw down.
I hope you will. I don't know I will enter, the fact I'm free at 14 november afternoon and 15 november will help. 16 November is my birthday, so if you want to give me something for it, please give a bonus point.

Cool, cool.

Well, I'm gonna try to do something myself, so I can be the token FL newb.

I just got the FL demo recently, and I'm getting used to it, so I might as well attempt to make something. Hopefully I won't miss the deadline. :)

RocketSniper
10-21-2007, 01:58 AM
Wow, I feel retarded. I've been looking for this to come up the last few days, but apparently have completely missed this thread's existence. I'll see what I can do.

I'm definitely in on this one.

DDRKirby(ISQ)

My "new version of FL" is scheduled to arrive on October 23, so I'll be in on this, unless school kicks my ass again.

10-21-2007, 06:18 PM
Okay, I'm trying to find time to work on a sig banner for this thing.

RocketSniper
10-26-2007, 04:51 AM
I'm up to about two minutes.

What do you guys feel about poorly sliced vocal samples taking the place of normal instruments?

DDRKirby(ISQ)
10-26-2007, 10:39 AM
i just got my version of FL Studio today and holy shit I managed to work out something outstanding.

...it's not block ball related in any way, but damn, i didn't know i could actually make stuff like this.

DDRKirby(ISQ)
10-27-2007, 08:24 PM
we're not allowed to use the Packs->Extra Samples that are copied from the CD, right? (I think they're from the "generic sample CD")

Gollgagh
10-28-2007, 01:56 AM
A good rule of thumb is if not everyone has it, it shouldn't be used.

RocketSniper
11-02-2007, 03:24 PM
Bump.

Also, I think I'm about done with my entry. Just need an ending of some sort.

Ideally, but if there are no submissions by then, there's not point in having it stay there.

Smenelian
11-11-2007, 05:09 AM
Mine is about halfway done. I'm pretty sure it will be finished by Thursday.

RocketSniper
11-12-2007, 02:40 PM
I'm posting mine a little early. Get the .mp3 file. (http://rocketsniper.googlepages.com/RocketSniperFLMC8KirbysCocklolfinal.mp3) Don't get the .zip (http://rapidshare.com/files/69201247/RocketSniper_FLMC8_Kirby_s_Cock__lol.zip.html) if you have a slow internet connection, it's 11MB from all of the rendered .wav files I used.

Bundeslang
11-15-2007, 01:15 PM
I have nothing started, so I think I skip this one, it's up to someone else to take last place.
I will vote (not for myself) for sure.

RocketSniper
11-15-2007, 04:29 PM
Could we have a deadline extend? I'd rather not be first and last place.

DDRKirby(ISQ)
11-15-2007, 09:48 PM
ug, but that would mean i have to try again...and not phail this time.

Gollgagh
11-15-2007, 11:36 PM
Phailure is not an option.

I believe an extension is in order, maybe to sunday night after thanksgiving?

Smenelian
11-16-2007, 05:31 AM
I could use an extra day or two...or week if that'll get more entries.

Gollgagh
11-16-2007, 06:05 AM
I think people forgot.

We really need to push this thing if we are to get more entries.

RocketSniper
11-17-2007, 04:13 PM
You know, we always get more traffic if there's a rule dispute. This thread had nothing posted in it for something like two weeks...

So now I say to you, Sytrus is accessible from the demo. People can render it just as easily as someone with the full version, exporting to .mp3 and slicing up for later use. Though it's one of FL's more powerful tools (A banned one, at that), it's technically available to everyone. Discuss.

RocketSniper
11-19-2007, 08:02 PM
And thusly I post a response to the person above who clearly knows not what he says, as sytrus was clearly stated as against said disputed rules wherein rofl.:shock: :sleepzzz:

Gollgagh
11-19-2007, 09:43 PM
I don't mind changing the rules if people want it (given enough reason), as I'm really just going off of the rules that chthonic had when he started FLMC1.

Idea: I'm gonna go ask Doulifée to make a banner for us.

Smenelian
11-19-2007, 10:43 PM
We could always add the ability to use one or more of the various free synths online. Just an idea. How big was FLMC when it started?

Gollgagh
11-19-2007, 10:51 PM
I think there were 8 or 10 entries.

I forget, but it was pretty popular the first couple rounds.

DDRKirby(ISQ)
11-20-2007, 02:50 AM
i dont like sytrus. we could do synth1 tho.

RocketSniper
11-20-2007, 05:54 PM
The bonus track I posted last time? Free samples from the FL affiliated site and some synth1. Everything else was FL preset.

DDRKirby(ISQ)
12-03-2007, 05:27 AM
i dont think that the judging is the issue...o_o;

Smenelian
12-04-2007, 05:22 AM
I don't know how much of this I can do before college finals. It kind of sucks, but I actually have to study for once. We should totally submit them to OCR (instead of OLR) and see who comes the closest to passing...lolz.

I dunno. Are you guys in a hurry to get this done or anything?

RocketSniper
12-05-2007, 04:15 PM
I'd kinda like to see these finished within a few days of christmas, or at least before school starts up.

Optionally, we could start a new, holidays edition, and deny all knowledge of this FLMC's existence.

Bundeslang
12-06-2007, 06:41 PM
If the deadline will be extended that far (after christmas) I will find time to do something. But not before the 21th.

Smenelian
12-08-2007, 12:51 AM
I can have something done before Christmas. Next week is finals week so after that I will have a lot more time to do stuff. Personally I think we should finish out what we've started here and see how much participation there is. We've got three (including mine that I will finish) for sure before Christmas. If you guys just want to finish this up and move on to something else, December 20-something could be the official last day. Judging could start shortly after. Waiting around for people to enter doesn't bother me so I'd be fine with Bundeslang joining up later. The more the merrier.

RocketSniper
12-08-2007, 04:48 PM
Yeah, the holidays are a bit crazy, but people seem to scrounge up a little time between christmas and new-year's eve...
I vote for making the final deadline January 1st, 2008 at 12:00 EST., just in time for the new year. And so that we all can remember the date.

Yes, I mean the 24th hour of Dec. 31.

RocketSniper

Kirby block ball is the theme, which means songs directly from the game, or related games should probably be used.

Or, you could come up with some sort of song that reminds you of Kirby's block ball.

ok I see no external plugins but what about morphine, toxic, 3x osc, beep map gen (lol), fruity vibrator (what the hell does this do anyways?), and all the other stuff?

Well i tried making a track without sytrus. Haha it sounded horrible. Seriously allow sytrus. It comes with the demo.
Edit: here's my piece of crap. Made it in about 30 minutes because I ripped straight from the midi.
It physically hurts to listen to it. Absolute crap. 3x osc can **** off.

Also, I'm not against allowing things if it gets entries submitted. However, I'd like the opinions of at least two "regulars" before I change anything.

Lunahorum

sytrus sounds a lot lot better than 3osc. 3osc has 3 osc which is good but it only has 1 filter controlling all three and one lfo controlling all three. It also has vol, filter, and pitch envelopes. That's it :(

Yeah dude, you have to have mad skillz to make mad synth sounds in this competition. Don't midi rip though. Put a little effort in. I recommend playing with the 3xosc for a while and see if you can't get something interesting out of it. Layer a few and make use of FX to get better results.

Edit: So I thought I put the banner thing in my sig, but I don't see anything there. I'm pretty sure I copied it properly. I don't normally post image links around here so I probably don't know what I'm doing.

RocketSniper

I'm fine with allowing sytrus, the only downside is people that haven't bought it (and don't have the demo) will have to render to .wav or .mp3 and save the score without the instrument.

Instead of completely banning things, we could also limit them to so many tracks. You can use sytrus, wasp, and whatever else, but only on up to three channels.

If this *is* applied, I'd like this to come into effect next round instead of this one. We've already had entries before this started to become an issue.

Bundeslang
12-18-2007, 05:13 PM

Morphine is not included with all versions FL Studio.
Toxic is not included with all versions of FL Studio.
Synth1 is not included with all versions of FL Studio.
Sytrus is not included with all versions of FL Studio.
get the picture? FL Studio Producer edition comes with DEMO versions of Sytrus/Toxic/etc. and that means you CAN'T SAVE ANY PROJECTS CONTAINING THEM. phail.

3xOsc is fine.
Beepmap is fine.
Vibrator allows you to generate vibrations if you have a force feedback joystick/etc.

DDRKirby(ISQ)

yeah. I can run it without ASIO too, actually. Though in both cases I need to tweak the buffer size. Using the "smart disable for all plugins" macro can help too.

You should be glad that Prophecy rendered "TheBlob" to wav file. Look at the project file he made for that O_o...insane...

I've got an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40 GHz with 2GB of ram running 32-bit Vista. And a piece-o-crap integrated sound card.

Man I should get a new mother board sometime. I am running 1.3Ghz single core with 1g ram.

RocketSniper
12-26-2007, 05:02 PM
That should be more than enough if you aren't running 15 3xosc's per synth...

Even if you are, as long as you don't use the reverb effect too much, then you should be fine. That's the most processor-heavy effect, by the way.

DDRKirby(ISQ)

It's not so bad when you look at the prices of other synths.

Dammit, I'm an idiot who doesn't know how to run things.

VOTING TIME

Here are the entries, both project file and .mp3, zipped up:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/x4t4l2

If you want the .mp3s individually, here they are:

Smenelian - Kirby's Block Boss (http://myspace.com/awesomelycoolstuff)

Bundeslang - NotinDreamland (http://bambombim.googlepages.com/Bundeslang-NotinDreamland.mp3)

I will take my five points soon, I have some time after tuesday, but maybe I will vote earlier.
This is even better than just voting for myself. Hopefully all entrants (and 332629862 others) will vote so I just don't give myself the victory. If all entrants vote, I have at least 8 points. I'll go for that.

6 Days are left, don't wait to long with voting, otherwise I'm going to win this by my vote and that's NOT what I want. But I'm sure I'm not the only voter.

Ladies and gents, we have a winner and his name is:

RocketSniper!

Voting tallies:

Rocketsniper: 15
Smenelian: 13
DDRkirby: 9
Bundeslang: 8

Voatse:1st - DDRKirby(ISQ)
2nd - RocketSniper
3rd - Smenelian

DDRKirby(ISQ) - I like the intro, sampling is really good, but the intro is too long. Then, when it's over, you are doing very wel in the middle. There's no end, which is the only thing what's a bit dissapointing. Nice job.
RocketSniper - Messy beginning, but not bad. I like the way you've placed these samples together. I like the switch at 1:00 but this part is all the same. I don't like the 'whatever' what's coming in at 1:40. The 'silence' at 2:08 is too long and it takes too long to bring the song back alive. I like the way you've ended the song.
Smenelian - This song starts really nice, but there's not much variation. The whole song is a bit the same, except for the end.

Bundeslang - ...............

1st place:
Smnelian
-------------------------------
It's a full song, it's got some originality, though a bit bland through most of the middle section.

2nd place:
DDRKirbyISQ
----------------------------------
Sounds kickass, but it's only two minutes long.

3rd place:
Bundeslang
--------------------------------
I think my head was actually in danger of exploding this time.

Number 1:
Rocketsniper - Kirbyscocklolfinal
Sweet. Intro is great, I like the bandpass filter. Synths and drums are awesome, as usual. Nice work on the speech synth, as well. GOOD JORB

Number 2:
Smenelian - Kirby's Block Boss
This is great. Drums are nice, I like that shaker. Arrangement is good. Yeah.

Number 3:
DDRKirby(ISQ) - FLMC8Try3
Omfg I love that supersaw. I wish you'd been able to finish this, but oh well.

1st: Rocketsniper
Fairly decent arrangement as far as I'm concerned. Interesting cameos from other games in there as well. Very solid entry, which I found enjoyable.

2nd: Smelnian;
It feels so empty for some reason. You might want something to fill out the lower frequencies to make it sound more complete.

3rd: Bundeslang
Man, that is some crazy dissonance you have going for most of the piece. It's like.... Ouch. It doesn't resolve or seem to have any purpose as a dissonant line. I'm sure it's a stylistic choice, but ergh... Not feeling it at all.

Uno: DDRKirbyISQ – Try3

This threw me off at first because I couldn’t figure out what it had to do with KBB, but then I realized it probably didn’t have anything to do with it. Pretty generic stuff, but catchy, especially the beginning. Minus points for not having a real ending.

Dos: RocketSniper – Kirby’s Cock (lol?)

This would have gotten the top spot if it weren’t for some bits that rubbed me a bit too much the wrong way. That “Kirbeeeeeeee” voice is one of those things. Some of the fast paced drum stuff you did with the voice was cool though. Another thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the amount of changing around the song does. I like variety, but there was just too much here. A lot of the individual sections were cool and I think you should have expanded on a couple and taken the rest out. The breakdown around 1:55 and the part between 2:10-2:50 were my favorites.

Tres: Bundeslang – Not in Dreamland

The bass and beat grew old pretty fast. I wasn’t a big fan of the synth choices either. The source tune was probably the most annoying song in the game (in my opinion), so you had your work cut out for you from the start. I can’t say I would have done a better job myself, so props for attempting.

Uses the melody from...er...the "gameover" music, iirc.

I didn't like the beginning, it was weak and lacked substance.

I didn't like the middle because while the side-chain effect was a little cool, the sequencing was such that some notes stuck out. It was annoying.

It didn't deserve an ending.

cool beans.

I must have been too skilled at playing the game to hear that song. I proudly stand corrected. *cough*

It feels so empty for some reason. You might want something to fill out the lower frequencies to make it sound more complete.

That's probably what I get for using boo bass as my main low end.

Congrats to Rocketsniper.

I think I'm going to open this one up with a bigger franchise, hopefully for more entries and some more voting action.

The LEGEND of Zelda!!1! (Yes, every game in the franchise)
I figure that should work for most people while producing interesting resluts.

Also, my sound packs all suck (The amen break is apparently NOT a unique thing to sample), so I may have to rely on gollagh to assemble a new one.

um, I wouldn't be able to assemble a sample pack worth crap, so if you want to have one, I'd suggest PMing DDRKirby or Smenelian.

I'll ready a new thread for the new competition.

And RocketSniper, you're always welcome to make a guest remix for the compo.

Okay guys, I need a reminder. What rules were we gonna change again?

RocketSniper
02-16-2008, 09:52 PM
I think we said something about allowing sytrus. In hindsight, that's a terrible idea and completely destroys the point of FLMC.

I think the competition rules were perfect this time, we just needed a little more participation on time.

Also, as a note to those who check this thread and this forum for FLMC9, it's actually in Gen Disc.

It'll probably be moved soon, but for the time being there's the thread.
