Although the general tune doesn't change much...it was really good nonetheless...the fade out around the middle was cool and it set you up for a nice change in the piece...slightly...nice work man...

Great remix, this was always my favourite music track from Doom 2.

The reason you think you hear other songs in this is because ID's music guy borrowed from several heavy metal song to make the soundtrack, both for doom 1 and 2. IE. the music to level 1 of Doom 1 sounds just like the intro of Metallica's Master of Puppets. :)

WHADDYA MEAN What do I think!!!!!?? :banghead:
I think im gonna :vomit: if I have another eargasm!!

This Totally Lives up to my Mazedude Expectations that Gothic sandy started me on & Bloodbath (sametrack) Raised the Bar on.
I do agree W/ Djp though it could have used a better ending like an earcrushing full out Bass assault.
But im not complaining either :P
Im going to the Baltimore Otakon this August & am building an OCR fanbase among my fellow anime geeks so far evry1 I've turned onto this site cant thank me enough.
keep it up with the great mixes & someday I'll Learn grow bold enough to submit something of my own

This mix...incredible. Right off the bat at '10, those effects kick in...they rock. The thing I love about this mix are all the counter melodies that come and go, and the effects in the background. They keep the song fresh, because the main melody seems to repeat over and over. 1'12, that little sixteenth pattern going on fucking rules. A lot of thought and effort were put into these, and it keeps you listening for the full 5. Pitch bends = 8O . Simply put...wow.

The drums...love em'. Good variation, good choice of drums.

Overall, a fine, fine remix. Mazedude's impressed me before (he remixed Boy and his Blob, and that makes me his love for life), and he continues to do so here. <3

Mazedude + Doom = Great ReMix

No different here. Mazedude puts out another good techno mix with this one.

9.5/10 (9.5 due to the somewhat dissapointing ending). Still a very good mix though.

Hmm, methinks I'll do a little bit of explaining here, to answer the unasked questions -
The reason it's called Oldskool is because it's done entirely with 8-bit low quality samples from the oldschool tracking days of the late 80s and early 90s. Pioneers like Skaven and Purple Motion rocked the demoscene with songs such as these: they didn't use the highest quality sounds, but they used a LOT of them, and often with so much attention to detail and such speed and accuracy that it was mind-boggling. That's what I tried to do here... I don't think I made ANY of the sounds in this - they were all swiped from the songs of the now non-existent "Demoscene". And thus, they were all used with everchanging patterns and sporadic intermittence, completely with the also-oldschool screaming synth lines... (that are so, SO fun to make, hehe). So, that explains the style - it's really more of an inside joke to me and my tracker brethren than the remixing community, but I gave it a nice industrial edge to still make it satisfying. :)
And regarding the ending - has anyone noticed that if you're listening to this in the background and you hear a fadeout, you can't help but ask "wait a sec - which fadeout is this? The real one or the fake one?" They're identical baby! I fake ya out once, then I do it for real the next time. I dunno, I think it's a unique way to end a tune. I like it.
So there's what Mazedude has to say on his own tune. Hope I've been somewhat informative - if you want to hear any original oldschool tracks, go to www.hornet.org and search for Future Crew, Skaven, Purple Motion, or Necros, and check out their tracks. You'll see. Later dudes!

I liked your-- uh, oh what was the name of that mazedude track i had on my playlist for about a light year after coming to OC-- I wanted to say the FF7 temple one, but that was Lousyspy :P Well whatever it was I liked it a little better :P
But this is great too :) I do like tracks that make good use of sound effect type stuff. Sorta like the FF6 devil's lab track (first one I ever heard like that).
Good stuff :)

Tis mighty repetitive and boring.

I know you were going for an old school feel, but that sawtooth synth/guitar/scratchy thing at the beginning sounds like a fart in a can.

I do like the cool industrial-ish drums you got goin, but it gets old fast.

Whoo, in a way this one reminds me one of the DK2 factory remixes. I DON'T KNOW WHY SO DON'T ASK ME...Probably due to the "heavyness" of this song. GJ on this song

I give it a 7.7/10. I like the old school feel to it combined with the almost scratchy sound but it is a bit too long and repetitive...

I cannot explain how much of a contrast this is to Mazedude's other EXCEPTIONALY GREAT work. The beginnig of the mix sounds like the beginning of the theme to a '80s grade-B sci-fi flick where robots are trying to take over the world and they have to be stopped by the average guy hero, the chick in hot-pants, the unusually brilliant 10 year old, and the lovable fat guy. I HATE THOSE KINDS OF MOVIES!

For shame, Mazedude! It's gonna be a long time til I can hear again!
(Oh and btw, you shoulda know better. Oldskool music sucks.)

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention, it's got a bit of Alexander Brandon-ish style at the beginning. Now that's cool. But that's about all of the coolness right there. Sorry Mazedude, better luck next time.

Wow! This is a nice remix of one particularly spooky Doom 2 level! In fact, when I first heard the tunes, it reminded me of the Cyberdemons and the imps!

This remix sound pretty mean and it has enough variety to keep me from getting bored! Awesome remix! This is a yet another great Doom remix here in OCR.. from Mazedude no less!

I like it, maybe because I'm one of the few here that can relate to the old demoscene.

I never was part of that scene per se, but I loved watching/listening to the demos, although most of the demos I saw were related to pirate/trading groups...I was always amazed at the attention given to the detail of the various tunes.

Anyway, Mazedude man, kudos on yet another brilliant remix!! You took my all-time favorite tune from Doom 2, map 10's theme, and decked it out to the max! The original tune was very forboding and haunting which I feel is lacking from your remix, but instead you heap on plentiful servings of what I perceive to be a "mechanical" or "cybernetic" groove. I would have never expected to hear a take on that theme quite like this! Great job man!!

I was never a fan of these games, so I don't recognize the song. Usually it's hard for me to get into a remix if I'm unfamiliar with the original, but I like this a lot.

This is kinda wierd, this was my least favorite tune from DooM II, I found it slow and depressing, but this mix is probably my fave D2 remix, whils another remix of my leas fave from doom 1 is my fave remix of that! wierd, eh?
Enehwah, this kicks much, ass, I do not see how people cannot like it. of course what yo want to do, is get something like doom legacy, so you can disable the midis, then play this stuff in the BG! Hoohah!
By the way, Mazedude, if you are listing to my humble words, what do you use to make these remixes?

I know this may be a bit of an old thread, but I had to comment on this piece. Once again Mazedude has floored me by his awesome remixes.
His Doom remixes are so crazy they're almost eerie. I've played his stuff for my friends and they always say how freaky his shit is. Oldskool is no exception.
As much as I DID like this piece, I gotta say I like Blood Bath and BarrelsOFun better. Can't beet that creepy shit.

Cheers.

Great, great stuff!!! Although it doesn't quite have the same feel to it as the original Midi, which seemed to be slower and darker and had a segment which isn't here at all, the rest of the song more than makes up for it. Tons of creativity, awesome instrument choice, etc. I especially like how the song "shuts down" then "restarts" around 2:09

For any trackers who are curious to see how this was constructed, I have posted the original IT file on www.mazedude.com. Considering the samples, it's not as huge as most of my files, and it's kinda a fun one to watch, hehe.

Wow. Goddam, pretty mean sounding track! In a sense, it retains the horror inducing sounds of Doom 2, and yet feels slightly campy with the shamelessly 80's techno sounds.

Pretty good. If I never heard of the game's track before, I would have thought it came from the 80's. Nice.

What can I do, I'm biased towards ReMixeRs who use a tracker, and Mazedude is certainly one of the best I've ever seen. How he can manage to achieve such good - I mean, AWESOME - results is a mistery to me.
This song, while not in my favorite genre, is really interesting. And, if you are a Doom fan, you should get this now.
Only weak point of this, the low bitrate of the MP3, that hurts the sound quality a lot, but it was needed to shrink down the filesize. Oh well, still a masterpiece.

It's decidedly techno-industrial, but I'm just not getting a "fear for the safety of my soul" vibe here.

In the end, its an average, o.k mix.

The beginning and parts of the ending are great, but it's mostly just "okay".

Well I for one love what is done here. To make a mix that is as potentially repetitive as this one so sustained and interesting for five minutes is incredible. The signature Mazedude quirkiness is still thrown in, with some strange chirps, boings and such behind the prominence of the main bass and melody so it doesn't take anything away from the apocalyptic vibe. But it is there, which is what is important.
Bobby Prince's work continues to win my attention and admiration, and Mazedude is a huge part of that. His attention to detail in turning deceptively simple synth-gothic ambience into window rattling power trips is something to cherish.

By the way, that premature fade out fools me every time.
Every. Damn. Time.

Oh yeah, this is oldskool all right. And it really does remind of an 80's B Horror movie (I don't know why, it just does), mixed in with the usual Mazedude flavouring. Didn't like the fakeout ending though, nearly stopped listening till I heard the beat come back, but that's my only beef with this great mix. :nicework:

some nice personalization, but it's not as deep as a lot of the mazedude tracks i'm used to. :-)
I thought the intro personalization was great, but i didn't fell that it branched out much further. It was a fun listen, but not a classic.
