View Full Version : Sample Request

I need a decent string ensemble/section soundfont but more important than it's quality it needs to have a quick attack. Anyone know any like this?
Umm this is going to be a weird request... but does anyone have access to samples of the Teletubbies? I need the teletubbies voices, the narrators voice, them singing, and that baby-sun laughing.
If noone has the samples direct, can you direct me to where i can download an episode i can rip the sounds off? i cant use P2P programs, only net access is at work

Ok, I need a couple things:
1. A bunch of good synths (especially something smooth with a sharp attack and decay, to quote Geoffrey Taucer)
2. Free, high quality swamp noises (insects would be best, and maybe a bit of bubbling or something)
I can't seem to find them.

Here's an odd one, but I need it for my Star Fox drum corps project. The final result of the project will be one big file that I will attempt to make sound like it was recorded at an actual drum corps contest.
I need crowd noise. A large crowd. Preferable with no reverb.
I need sevreral different applauses, including a couple of huge ones, some small, quieter ones, perhaps a noise floor.
No air horns or noise makers or any of that stuff.
Any format is acceptable as I will just rip the samples out of it, but WAV is preferred.

Orchestral mainly. Ethnic stuff. Shakuhachi and koto stuff would be nice. Some sitar samples, maybe some Celtic sounds too. Oh and I need a decent set of choir samples, along with some snice Enya style vocals.

Can anyone recommend some good assorted vocal samples? Not the standard choir, more like the random phrases/interjections/whatever that techno and electronica love to use so much. I think I've heard such samples in Rellik and bLiNd's work. You know, the kind of thing that made up like 70% of Jet Set Radio Future's soundtrack.
Ideas?
I have voice packs of famous reused rap phrases, and other stuff. As well as voice soundfonts. My weirdest soundfont ever is a James Brown (:!:) soundfont.

sephfire, you're looking for random phrases? Those quotes you refer to are typically mined out of old movies (or radio programs), usually obscure ones. They are very easy to sample most of the time because often there is no background noise during scenes.
If I were you, I'd just pop in a DVD of Roman Holiday or something and start thinking about what lines you might be able to use while you watch; you're best off sampling this sort of thing yourself imo.
DZComposer: Likewise, for crowd noise sounds, I'm sure you could find some crowd noises to sample on almost any recording of any live show of any musical group.

Alright, I'm looking for some sort of "percussion" sounds. I don't mean drums, I'm moreso just looking for some of the more rare/random sounds, like... woodblocks, guiros... hmm, a few sounds in particular. If you have heard... the Tales of Symphonia OST >__> "Shinobi Life", there's those woodblock sort of "taps" going on. You can find a similar sound in the Goemon games, or heck, a ton of oriental music. That and that sort of shaker... again, I have no clue what instrument they used to get the sound, so I'm going to refer to House of the Flying Daggers for this  . It's that sort of sleigh bells/shaker hybrid. You can hear it in the beginning of the movie, where... Zhang Ziyi is singing the song while she does that test.
Whoo, movie/game references.. Look, I'm sorry about that, but I just don't know how to describe those sounds. So I guess any asian percussion would be what I'm looking for... minus the drums. I've got lots of those. Hopefully free...?

Steel guitar? Hmm. I have a nice classical guitar that's nylon I believe, but if you're looking for steel, consider checking out a bunch of the big (40-80mb) GM sf2s on hammersound.net . Fluid R3 and Cadenza are good places to start. I often find myself using samples from these kinds of collections because they are typically taken from good hardware workstations.

I'm looking for two things:
1. Marching band percussion
2. A metalic anvil-like hit which is used commonly in movies (for example, the final fight scene in the Matrix: Revolutions).
Both of these have been mentioned elsewhere in this topic, but they got no responses. Also, I have checked hammersound already. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.
On a side note: wow... it took me about 3 hours to wade through this topic. And now I've got my first 2 gb of samples! (still waiting for FL Studio to come in the mail so I can get another 2 gb of Sample Fusion).

I have never seen a free marching percussion set.
Also, I have only seen one commercial set (which I own a license to) and that is the Virtual Drumline. It also contains a crapload of other percussion sounds.
http://www.tapspace.com/vdl2/ It'll cost you $200.
However, if you want to wait, there is another library coming out that has marching percussion, and that is the Garritan Marching Band library, which will also contain the special Marching Band winds as well.
http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46050 This will cost $239.
Anvil shouldn't be too hard to find due to it's common use in opera. Look for Orchestral Percussion packages.
If you can't find one, a break drum is similar in sound (though not as loud and rings longer). VDL has break drums.

It's a snare drum without the snare turned on. The snare itself on a snare drum is a band of thin curled metal wires that are locked into place against the bottom head of the drum and vibrate when it's hit. You can loosen them, which gives the snare the kind of sound that they use in the video.

"The snare itself on a snare drum is a band of thin curled metal wires that are locked into place against the bottom head of the drum and vibrate when it's hit."
On some drums, the snare is made of nylon. But that's seen mainly in orchestra and marching band.
They are also sometimes made of gut, once again mainly seen in orchetra.
But the metal snares are very very common everywhere except marching. All of the ones I've seen have been nylon or gut.

Some of the sustain loops are horrid (e.g. very noticeable, pop), you can hear hiss on some samples, and I could even hear people rustling around throughout some samples (contrabass specifically).
Maybe it's my sampler, maybe it's CDXtract (you probably remember the thread that describes the way to batch convert using only the demo), maybe it's the AKAI format, dunno, but the pizzicato is good.

Ok. I've been using Sonar for a while now, but here's a noob question. What is the difference between a "synth" and a "soundfont"? I've been using DXI synths until now. To use them I install them and then I can "insert" them as a track in Sonar. I really want to check out some of Darkesword's soundfonts, but I'm not sure how to use them. I downloaded a woodwind one and then used the compressor to inflate it (that sounds all backwards) which resulted in the creation of an SF2 file. Can anyone tell me how to get that file to make sound in Sonar? Thanks for the help.
Does anyone know of a site for ethnic wind instruments ( I'm actually looking for a shanai, but something that sounds like it will do).
EDIT: I'm also looking for ethnic drums.

A soundfont is simply another type of sample format, like a ReFill. To use it, you'll need a sampler, or possibly a wrapper to load it, as it may not be a format native to Sonar (not sure, but it should be).
A synth is entirely different from a soundfont; it is an actual instrument in the analog world, or a virtual instrument in the digital world. A synth can be sampled as a soundfont for use with your DAW, a plug-in (sometimes attempting to replicate analog synths), or it can be an actual hardware device (rack-mount, keyboard, whatever).
I don't think you used a compressor, lol, to "inflate" the file, but probably unpacked it using whatever program you use, as they are .sfpack files.
Good luck.

That's because you shouldn't do distortion guitars with a sample alone. It is actually much more effective to use a good distortion plugin combined with a sample.
Distortion is an effect that you can't capture properly in a sample. Most synthesizers with a sample-based engine do the same - they simply throw a distortion effect over it.
As for toms, check out http://www.akaipro.com/arc_kotw.html - the Linn drum should have what you need.

Okay newbies, listen up: There is no such thing as a good distorted/overdriven guitar sample. If anyone tells you they have a good one, they are lying.
You can use generators, such as FL Slayer. But for our poor ears' sake, don't use Slayer. Unless, you are, like, Skaven, or someone else who can just make anything sound good somehow. Sometimes you can get away with using Slayer as a kind of backing rythym guitar thing. It is also very good at sounding like a fake guitar - check out BGC's (that Big Giant Circle's) Unreal Tournament ReMix for an example of that.
Errrrr... back on topic. Right. Yeah! Don't use Slayer. Apparantly, other guitar generators exist that don't suck as much, but you have to pay monies for them.
Another option is to get a clean (undistorted) guitar sample, and then distort it. This can work suprisingly well, depending on the sample, the distortion unit, and piece of music. Try to use a proper Tube amp simulator - I have found Voxengo Boogex works well sometimes.
Your final option is to either learn the guitar or get someone to play it for you. I know, kind of a waste of the guitarist's time if its just going to buryed in the back of a track somewhere, but if you need a lead guitar part, this is strongly reccomended.
Here endeth the lesson.
