Just can't find that dream sound? This is the place to ask. Do everyone a favor and check the last few pages of the thread (at least) to make sure no one has already requested what you're looking for.

Here's a compiled list of many of the resources this thread has come up with.

Hmm not off the top of my head. I do have a tip about those kindsa bells though. Definately try notes in a lot of ranges -- tubular bells have a very limited range in which they actually sound cool. Too low and they don't have enough punch and too high and they just sound cheapo. I've run across tubular bell sounds where I tried them out and dismissed them as being crappy only to realize later that they WERE good, but only for about an octave.

Also, you're also probably going to have to add some chorus and reverb or delay to get the sound you're looking for, even if it's a good sound font.

Fray.

Okay, I've played tubular bells in band and they only have a range of an octave. Otherwise you get an unnatural sound. For the best range, use or find handbells or church bells.

Any suggestions of where to search for church or handbells?

yeah greylightning, that conversation ended a few months ago. I bumped this thread in the hopes that we could start over with it, and get some more usefullness out of it. howabout some people list their favorite soundfonts? perhaps with links?

GrayLightning
11-24-2003, 07:46 PM
Yes, I noticed. No one answered the question per se, so I decided to step in since it was bumped already. ^^

From what I remember my favorite soundfonts were the ones by Ethan, Fluid, cadenza strings, squidfont, natural studio.

I just deleted most of my soundfonts. I have only about 10 left now. These mostly consist of specialty soundfonts, I don't have the GM/collections anymore as I've upgraded to other stuff. :) The ones I still have are jv inertia, I used this in my Dezoris Winter mix here on OC. Also I like the roland orchestra percussion set, it's at Hammersound. It has some nice orchestral hits. The bennet asia 8850 soundfont is also nice if you're looking for asian percussion. Drums by slavo is nice if you can make do with one with alot of reverb processing. It works for that 80s sound. 8)

on a general note, can anybody name a really solid piano soundfont? if not for free, are there any good ones for cheap? I know piano is pretty difficult to synth well, but you cant hurt a guy for trying.

also, i know brass soundfonts are always tricky, does anybody have a good one they swear by?

Right now, I'm starting to build granular oscillator samples for the 3Osc using SoundForge to extract these waveforms. Right now they are turning out interesting. I'll try and get my piano recorded for the 3Osc. (It might suck, but at least it will give interesting results.

For soundfont pianos the best really are the ones rated highly at Hammersound. Also it does depend what kind of tone you're looking for. I personally like the pianissium (sp?), maganda and clavinova. I used pianissium on my Chrono Trigger and Xenogears mixes posted on OC. I really like the tone of pianissium, but I think it only has one velocity layer and it has a weird faint ringing tone.

Another good one are the clavinovas at http://www22.brinkster.com/guraydere/

Remember the real trick with using piano is good sequencing not the samples.

As for brass soundfonts, squidfont has some of the best ones.

This is for whoever is looking for a decent piano module. It's a VSTi plug-in , not a soundfont (sorry for posting it in a sample/soundfont thread  ). It's around 7 megs ( and that's just for the piano). It's a multi-sampled 4 front piano module. It also consumes very little CPU , and it's free!. Here's where you can find it:

http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/597.html

I know it's not a soundfont, but some host applications support VST as well as soundfonts , so it might still come in handy.

Sykotik, do you really want techo *samples? I mean, sure, you can still do some cool stuff with them, but I'm guessing you're not planning on doing that cool retro tracker stuff. If you have FL, what you want is VSTi for synth, unless for some reason I'm wrong, which I'm not (or if you are lazy, can't figure out how to work VST technology, have technical problems, etc...). Anyway, if you want just a straight answer to your question, you can find a SoundFont called "Oberon" something, it's pretty cool for an SF.

My own question is pretty simple. I think I basically have all the really excellent SoundFonts. I have SquidFont, Piano Giga Steinway, ns_kit, Cadenza, Florestan everything, plus alot of other stuff but that's not what I'm worried about. The deal is, I want to know if there are any lesser-known amazing SoundFonts or sample sets out there. I would hate to miss out just because I am satisfied with my current free SoundFont library; there's plenty of stuff I would still like to have :). So I guess what I'm asking is for recommendations of the highest quality free SoundFonts, because I feel as though I've basically got almost everything worth having, which would make me sad :( so I'm hoping someone has some really amazing link to some amazing little-known and free SF's.

I need a very realistic cello sound font. I have the BH Cello from Hammer, but recently it was commented on as being very GM, ergo, anyone have any suggestions?

Rellik
12-17-2003, 02:46 AM
Try the Cello in Squidfont; I like it alot. Not very expressive, but solid and thick.

As for my request:

I'm looking for ambient samples (soundfonts would be fine, but WAVs preferred). Basically, I just mean non-musical samples, like "whoosh", or "zoop", but not so cheesy :P. Also, more literally ambient stuff like caves and forests and cities and all that. I hate to make comparisons to games or specific songs and all, but if you've ever played Metroid Prime, you've probably heard the kind of stuff I'm talking about (like in the Overworld theme, where not only are there ambient elements but also random cool sound effects that play and then delay).

Request #2:

Tinkly percussion :). You know, like glass breaking, but not actually realistic, I'm just using that as an archetype for the type of sound. The type of sound that can easily replace a hi-hat line, and sounds very cool in many situations. All things welcome, like tambourines and even hi-hats on the tinkly side.

And I have to recommend the "Guray" series of SoundFonts; reminds me of Florestan in that it's a whole big sereis, but it has more, and alot of very high quality stuff (like Marcato strings and a cool accordian). I'll try to find a link, but it shouldnt be too hard to find :). Also, check out the FFIV SoundFont from Zophar.net, it's got some really cool old-school sounding samples, if not always the most useable.

If you'd like, I'll send it to you - it was a pain to find. PM me if interested.

Anyway, does anyone know of any good free GM soundfonts? I'm looking specifically for one to use with a softsynth (Fluidsynth), as I don't have a hardware synth on this computer. In particular, I'm looking for one with tuned instruments - some GM soundfonts seem to have particular instruments tuned differently than others, which makes for a very poor rendition when they're heard together.

Cool. Up until this point, I've only been using the regular sounds that come with FL and Reason, and just altering them in whatever ways fits what I'm trying to do best. I love just making/recording my own wave files for the rest, playing around with them; and than throwing them into the mix (instruments, sound effects, speech, etc.).

Even though I don't have any requests for new sounds at the moment (since I love just altering the originals or building my own; for when the defaults aren't enough), it's still nice know there's a thread devoted to posting links and formats to alternative sounds. Not sure if you guys would have anything that fits with my weird tastes though. :)

Zircon, you've probably heard of Florestan; they have an excellent Aaaaaaaaah choir soundfont (I think it's just Aaah or Aah). The to half is female, lower half is male; by itself it doesn't sound so great, but it's the kind of sample that can be EQed to perfection because it is neither too bright nor too dark. I don't have a link to Florestan, but it's one of those sites that isn't too hard to find.

I dont really like chiors used in single melody lines because if they arent real they usually sound pretty fake. I am going to upload a soundfont i used in a mix recently, you can check how it sounds in the remiw wip other section. I think it sounds really good.

Chords with soundfont chiors dont sound that good if they are in triadic form either to me.

Basically i use my chior font in four part voicing style (basically a spread out chord across about two or so octaves with one note double if you dont know what i meant by four part voicing).

Hope it helps, expect it tomorrow or the next day.

I don't think its pssible. check the fl101 thread.

EDIT: and you are not a noob you are a newbie. newbie and n00b are very different. a n00b is generally someone who is either being stupid to piss people off or someone who think he knows everything but knows very little (and therefore pisses people off). a newbie however is someone who is new to something (rather obviously).

then why don't you just use real wav samples?

Because a sample format allows you to map wav files to a keyboard and allows you to trigger the sample with a keyboard or by a piano roll, among other things.

Soundfonts can also have velocity specific samples, such as in a piano soundfont. High velocity will play a harder attack, whereas a low velocity will give you a softer sound.

If you're just talking about percussion, soundfonts are nice because yes, you can program them into a MIDI keyboard, and also, percussion soundfonts often have sounds that work really well together.

Stand alone wave samples are nice; I use them a lot myself, for rev cymbals and more ethnic percussion sounds, but I prefer soundfonts, because they're sounds that come in packs and they often have specific data about when to cut a sample (e.g. a CH sound will automatically cut a OH sound).

Granted, you can do stuff like cutting with wav samples, but it's more convenient when you have a soundfont that takes care of all that for you.

Rellik
12-29-2003, 06:37 PM
Yeah... it's completely ignorant to say that WAV samples are better than SoundFonts. SoundFonts are basically stand-alone samplers; and you can't play a wave file without some kind of sampler.

About the kILLER series. I know it's your opinion and all, Nemba, but personally, I find that they really suck compared to most other worthwhile synths (yes, they're worthwhile, as in they don't just sound like crap and crash all the time, but I find that they're almost totally useless and have lackluster sound). I'd really like to hear a demo with these used well to prove to me that they are actually useful.

I recently got a program which I'm liking, but it seems it only wants a particular type of sample, of a GUS format.

I currently have one set of basic instruments, and while some of them are bareable, others are less than good to the ear.

So, does anyone here have any GUS patches, or know where I can find some? They haven't been the easiest thing to find so far. Given, I have only had the program two days, but two or three days search if I can get help here is better than 6 months...

Quality would be very nice, but I'm also after quantity. So, I will pretty much take anything.

If you have GUS stuff, but don't want to be nice and send everything you have, or have too much to send all at once or something...I would appreciate in the least, some drums, acoustic bass, flute, and harpishcord...as these instruments in particular are very displeasing in my current set.

Note: The format this program says it needs is GUS but the file extension of these patches is not .gus but rather .pat...so if you have no idea what this GUS stuff is, but have or know where .pat files can be downloaded from, I'm betting that they will probably work anyway.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me URLs, FTPs, or basically send me any of this stuff.

I'm new to this jargon so correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression I needed a decent sound card to successfully use soundfonts. If that's the case, I won't be able to because I have a worthless card that has minimal to zero MIDI functionality.

But if I don't then that would be great, of course :D

And yes, it is Timidity I'm referring to.

If you haven't already, get this (http://www.onicos.com/staff/iz/timidity/dist/timidity-w32-2_11_3.zip) version of Timidity (Windows GUI). Open timidity.cfg as a text filt and replace it with this code:

## This sets the Timidity and Soundfont directories ##
dir (Your Timidity directory-can't have spaces)
dir (Your soundfont directory-can't have spaces)

## Complete Soundfonts ##
soundfont Fluid_GM.sf2
#soundfont Personal_Copy.sf2
#soundfont Unison.sf2

## Additional Instruments ##
#soundfont Ahh_Choir.sf2
#soundfont Grand_Piano.sf2
#soundfont String_Orchestra.sf2
#soundfont String_Quartet.sf2
#soundfont Woodwinds.sf2

The complete soundfonts and additional instruments sections should be changed to match the names of your soundfont files. You can enable/disable soundfonts by putting a # sign in front of them.

Finally, put a copy of timidity.cfg in C:\WINDOWS. Make sure in timpp32g.ini "ConfigFile=C:\WINDOWS\timidity.cfg". Open timidity and load a midi, it should now work. You don't need an SB Live! soundcard for Timidity to work.

Also, here's a help file I wrote: (apologies for the long post)

# How to Use Timidity #

What is Timidity?
-----------------

With Timidity you can load a midi file and play it back using a soundfont.
A soundfont is a set of instruments that replace your default midi instruments
to give midis a different sound, usually a more realistic one.

How do I install Timidity?
--------------------------

Copy the Timidity folder from the CD to wherever you want it on the computer. Make sure you
put a copy of timidity.cfg in C:\WINDOWS or else the program won't work. The two directories
listed in timidity.cfg should be the Timidity directory and the Soundfont directory, wherever
those may be on your computer.

To set the default directory Timidity uses to open midi files, open timpp32g.ini and look for the
line 'MidiFileOpenDir='. After the = put the directory you would like Timidity to browse in.

How do I use Timidity?
----------------------

Open timidity-gui.exe, then go to File > Open File to open a midi file. When you hit the
play button it may take a few seconds to load the soundfonts.

How do I record a midi into a wave or mp3 file?
-----------------------------------------------

First, go to Config > Preference and check not looping. Then, go to Config > Preference > Output
tab. In the bottom half of the Output tab you will see an Output section that reads 'Windows
audio driver'. Click on it and change it to 'RIFF WAVE file' (to save a wave file) or
'MP3 GOGO' (to save an mp3 file).

Click the Output File button to set the name of the file your wave or mp3 will be. Click OK
and hit the play button in the main window. The wave or mp3 file should begin recording, and
will be complete when the midi file has finished playing.

What Soundfonts do I Have?
--------------------------

In the Soundfonts directory I've included these soundfonts:

Personal_Copy.sf2 - Complete instrument set, high quality
Unison.sf2 - Complete instrument set, high quality

Ahh_Choir.sf2 - Male choir in lower register, female choir in upper register
Drumset.sf2 - High quality percussion set, takes a little longer to load
French_Horns.sf2 - High quality french horns
Grand_Piano.sf2 - High quality piano, takes a little longer to load
Harmonica.sf2 - Good quality harmonica
Pizzicato.sf2 - Realistic string pizzicato
String_Orchestra.sf2 - Good quality string orchestra
String_Quartet.sf2 - High quality violin, viola, cello, and bass
Tubular_Bells.sf2 - Good quality bell
Woodwinds.sf2 - High quality wind instruments

How do I change soundfonts?
---------------------------

In the Timidity directory open timidity.cfg. You should see something like this:

## This sets the Timidity and Soundfont directories ##

dir C:\Timidity
dir C:\Soundfonts

## Complete Soundfonts ##

soundfont Fluid.sf2
#soundfont Personal_Copy.sf2
#soundfont Unison.sf2

## Additional Instruments ##

#soundfont Ahh_Choir.sf2
#soundfont French_Horns.sf2
##soundfont Grand_Piano.sf2
#soundfont Harmonica.sf2
#soundfont Pizzicato.sf2
#soundfont String_Orchestra.sf2
#soundfont String_Quartet.sf2
#soundfont Tubular_Bells.sf2
#soundfont Woodwinds.sf2

This is your configuration file for soundfonts. To disable a soundfont
put a # in front of it, as in '#soundfont Ahh_Choir.sf2'. To enable,
delete the #. Always have one of the complete soundfonts enabled and
the others disabled as you can't use more than one at the same time,
and the additional instruments are only replacements.

Also, make sure the the two directories at the beginning of the file point to
your Timidity directory and your Soundfont directory. The 'dir' must be at
the beginning of the line.

Ok, here's what I'm needing:

Random vocal hits.

Jazzy, male or female, just really smooth type phrases. I don't really care what it says... if there's enough I'm bound to find one that fits. But the jazziness is the most important part; I don't want rap "YeAHA!"'s and "WOOOOOhhh"'s and "COME ON!!!!!"'s, I want jazzy, cheesy, "One two, ready let's go." or "Time to split.", "Okay, three, two, one, let's jam.", "I think it's time to blow this thing." etc.

And that's as specific as I can get, really :) thanks if you have any tips.

I'm looking for some rock soundfonts. Overdriven guitars and Distorted guitars mainly as I only have one of each and they aren't really great.

I could do with a bass with more 'oomph' that still sounds smooth. Either that or I'm not processing it properly to get that sound.

I have drumkits, but only really one kit that is useful for traditional rock instrumentations. I'm not terribly worried about this because it isn't a bad set, but if possible I'd like to bring up more options for myself.

I'm mainly after electric guitar Soundfonts though.

For electric guitar soundfonts for free, your choices are mostly the ones at hammersound. There's really no great guitar sample, they all sound fake anyway. ^^ For free rock kit, I like the slavo kit (80s sound) and the nskit at http://www.natural-studio.co.uk/nskit_download.htm

I'm looking for a sample that seems to be used for "icy" stuff. I've heard it in Metroid Prime in the Phendrana Drifts theme, and in Mega Man X4 for the Frost Walrus stage. Here's a small clip from the Phendrana Drifts theme where it gets used 3 times, so you know what I'm talking about:

All right. What I need is a sample or soundfont of crowd noises: nothing too complex, but just some noise to start of my first actual project (i.e. I have an idea now of what I'm going to do). People happy, maybe even laughing, chattering excitedly. I may have a few voice samples to throw in. Basically, something like the crowd of commoners standing outside the castle just before the big ceremonial knighting. If possible, sounds of people "shh"-ing would also help, to resemble how they quite down as the ceremony begins. For an example, think the crowd noises from RollerCoaster Tycoon, or check out the very beginning of "Team Gato" in the Chrono Trigger mixes. Something like this would be very much appreciated, although I don't need it, as the mix would sound fine starting right into the snare rolls and trumpets, too.

EDIT: I just attempted to record some voice samples, but it's a no-go; my mic sucks and I can't get away from the background noises of the computer and air conditioning. Not to mention that the mic only works on a different computer than the one on which FL is installed. So, could anyone do some voices for me? One of a man saying, "I can't believe Glenn is being knighted!" And another of a woman saying "Wasn't he that creepy frog?" Italics, of course, should be emphasized or stressed in some way. It can be any sort of voice as long as they're normal - these are just random people in a crowd of dozens to hundreds of people, most of them from the middle or lower classes in the society.

Meanwhile, this computer still seems to decently record noises being played by it, so I'll see what I can do about recording my own clips of RCT or Team Gato for the crowd noises. If anyone happens to have any on hand, though, they would be most appreciated.
Damn. I have exactly what you're looking for, from Neverwinter Nights. The only problem is, they're in some weird format (It's just MP3 that's read by the game and I don't know how to make it regular MP3.) and also I have an extremely slow internet connection and have no way of uploading them. :/ Maybe someone with broadband and NWN can help you out.

And... what kinda leads do they use in ambient? Mostly pads, I think, but there has to be 1 or 2 leads that I could go with. For now, I'm stuck with this Flanger Saw... :(

Whipsmack, if I could find what you're talking about, I would be deliriously happy. Unfortunately, there are no really excellent fiddle/violin sounds that I know of.

For a snare, check out Hammersound under percussion. They have some good army-type ones.

My request:

Beatles style male "Ahhhh" choir, or humming choir. :D! I'm not sure if this can be found, but maybe...

Which brings me to a question. Is it ok to sample from songs? Not whole songs or motifs or anything, but just individual notes (or more likely chords, for some instruments). I'm talking about ripping the Choir from some Renaissance-style choir music, ripping the strings from classical, ripping the "Ahhhh" choir from some song by the Beatles... even ripping whole drum loops from songs and cutting them up. Would you get into trouble for this (I don't really mean legal... I doubt that would happen)? What if it were unrecognizable? What if you *made* it unrecognizable? What if you layered it?

just look for an orchestra kit and usually they come with a snare roll (or a couple different snare rolls) and a snare drum (or a few different snare drums) and they are perfect for marching drum sounds.

If you find an orchestral kit with a snare in it, its almost always the military type sound... at least from my experience.

Cakewalk may not be the greatest thing in the audio recording department (in my opinion), they sure do know how to make MIDI sequencing a joy! I've used a ton of MIDI sequencing software, and I can tell you that of the ones I've used, Cakewalk can't be beat. Rather it's the old DOS version, the newer Windows updates to the software, or even SONAR, it's the best around.

And if it's "free" you're looking for, I really don't know. Most of the free ones I've used are junk.

No. It's illegal, no matter how much of it you sample and how much you mangle it. If you want to do that, you have to get permission from the copyright holder (clearing samples, in other words. Bladerunner must be the most sampled movie of all time, and do you think that half the people who sampled from it cleared the samples? No ...). It might not be too hard to clear the samples, however.

You never know when or how someone might recognise it, and if the copyright holder finds out, you could be in serious trouble. Honestly, if you're going to do it, you'd be better off just trying to get the samples cleared. Better safe than sorry, although if you're not going to distribute it, I suppose there wouldn't be much point. However ... Eliminate all trace? Why use the sample from the song, then? Unless it's an obscure sound, you can generally find most of the sounds from sample websites.

Not to mention that the SF2/samples are copyrighted and not free. Besides... This is just another started cult like the "yet-another-Schala/Zeal" remixes. You don't "have to" remix it. Hell geez... it's not like you loose a live or something if you don't. So stop bugging Savior Sephiroth - one request is more than enough.

Those brass samples are...dissapointing. There are a lot of them, but few stand out as being particularly good... quality over quantity I say. I would rather download just one sf2 at that size if it sounded great.
I need to find real brass... those syntheticy, keyboard-taken ones can sound alright in some instances but not mine. We all understand by now that you think threads like these are pointless. Or rather, you imply it heavily by telling people to search for their own and that if they're too lazy to do so then we shouldn't bother helping.

I never said this thread is pointless. It's the other way, I even recommended this thread to stop other threads popping up with the same questions over and over. But thanks for the insult.

This thread's kind of here for a reason. And he asked twice. Twice. Not seven times, not even three times, twice. He probably thought his request got overlooked, or overshadowed by another, more wordy request or reply.

Unfortunately you're wrong... he asked three times. First it was like "oh yeah, I like the Sephiroth samples because the song is popular at OCR now", then it was like "ya know what I mean STFU I need them now" and the third was like "I must need them, OMG I'm a n00b and I have the right to get it because my remix will be uberl33t!!!111one!". You get what I try to say?

Basically, if everyone responded like your answer, this forum would be null. All there would be is a little message that says "We do not help lazy people. Find your own stuff." And thus the purpose of sharing knowledge and helping other developing remixers is defeated.

Thanks.

Sorry, but the hell I'll do.

I said it already, and I'll say it again. The SF2 Savior Sephiroth was asking about isn't free, it's copyrighted by Squaresoft. That's why I do not give it out. I said "there are ways", indeed, because you can still get that file legally (that's the way I got it). But if he doesn't do any researches, then I'm really sorry for him. Spoonfeeding is usually not our job. There even are other ways, but neither I nor other OC remixers or staff supporting that method - so don't even ask.

Just because you're a noob and spoiled with everything doesn't mean that you have the right to get everything for free (best: now!) or can get angry without a reason. Just my humble opinion to that topic. I leave the rest to one of the mods (if they want to say a word or two).

Thanks.

Or atleast a search engine or site that can find stuff like that? because ive heard a fair amount of mixes with sounds from the actual games, and i cant find any sites that have that sort of stuff.

I think I can help you, BlueEnvy.

This is an idea that I got. I haven't been able to test it (the audio cables I have aren't long enough), but in theory, it should work. You'll have to perform the rip directly from gamecube.

You'll need Gamecube, SSBM, the TV, and a CD-recorder or cassette recorder (with line in).

Step 1: Power up gamecube, with the component cables attached to the television. Attach two controllers.
Step 2: Go to the options menu and further to the sound effects bar.
Step 3: Find the sound effect that is the right Kirby one.
Step 4: Disconnect the audio cables from the television. Attach them to the CD-recorder or cassette recorder. Hit record.
Step 5: Hit play on the console menu to play all the sounds you need.

In theory, the sounds should get played and recorded directly onto the CD or tape, which can then be transferred easily into a computer. (For tapes, use your soundcard's Line-In port and re-record digitally from there. You may not get the best qualtiy, but a good audio editing program should be able to clean it up to a resonable state.)

Alternatively, pop the CD into the CD-ROM drive and see what happens. There might be an accessable sound directory in the disc if the PC CD-ROM laser can read it. Afterall, you can play all the music and SFX from a menu screen.

I hope this helps in your search!

I've done this, but differently.
When i did it i connected the GameCube to the Cd player (with the sound inputs, and a headphone slot), then use a stereo cable male/male to transfere the sound from the cube into the line-in on your soundcard.

The easiest way to do this is to log the controls of what you have to do to get into the appropriate sound menu in the game (write down everything like, press A, go down 2 etc) and set your Gamecube up next to your computer and use the commands you wrote down to get into the game.

Then it's as simple as opening a sound recorder and recording the sound effects that you're playing by pressing buttons in the controller.

I hope this is ok

I did something like that, only I went straight from the Gamecube's audio output to the computer. Just take an RCA to 1/8" adapter, stick one end in the computer's line-in, and stick the GCN's audio out cables into the other end. On my SB Live, I was able to turn up the line-in volume and listen to what was being played so I could record specifically what I wanted without having to research it beforehand.

Where might I find a tribal-sounding tom-tom set? It can be part of a regular drum kit or a stand-alone tom set. I need at least six toms of different "pitches" (yes, I know they have indefinite pitch, but I don't know what else to call it). I've looked around Hammersound already. . .

Tyler Heath

Using FL? What I'll do is take your garden variety toms on a drumkit and alter their pitches - like pitch the top tom higher, the mid tom slightly lower/higher, and the low tom lower.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Ok, I'm near finished with my Megaman X Boomer Kuwanger song. All I need is a very real sounding trumpet that is comparable to the trumpet in Disco Dan's HeatMan Rapid Fire mix.

The only requirement is that I ask that it is free and in a soundfont or VST format. Sample format is ok if and only if it is a last resort.

Thank you for your help

Just so nobody wastes their time like I did (especially since the download takes a long ass time, and there are four of them and like me, many would want all of them because how good they sound in the description).

Dont get the wombat solina vst's. There is a trumpet, a viola, a violin, and another one... I can not get anything out of these instruments that soudns anything like what they are supposed to sound like (not only that, but I compared the viola and the trumpet one and they sound almost exactly the same if not exatly the same and I am sure everyone knows how different a viola and a trumpet are).

Sigh...

But yeah, dont waist your time, though they are usefull for really cheap and ugly sounds if you want it.

Most of the synths that come here are really good but there is one that seems very harsh on your speakers. Almost every preset on one of these goes waaaay out of sound range causing major clipping. (im sure a hevy compressor would hep though you want something as good as possible before using any effects on it, so I just stay away from that one, I will find out the specific one tomorrow and let you all know)

Check these out and you probably should not be dissapointed as I use these often.

My personal favorite of these is the EGOkiller as I use it in almost every mix right now (tweak the "wide open" preset, its already pretty nice)

DM Lee

The thing I do really like about mind killer though is that it has two filter lfos that work by measure, so you cn produce some pretty nifty effects on your sounds.

I find the filter on egokiller pretty lacking, I wish it had the double filter option.

I once had a program that could play back .mid files with its own FM sound that are similiar to old Adlib cards... You could try that. I forgot what it's called though.

DM Lee
02-20-2004, 08:21 PM
you could use average sounds (soundfonts) and then mess with the tuning on it or just use a light ditortion on everything in your entire song. Or highly compress the entire finished product until everthing is close to a blur of musical sound... not sure if this works or not (max compression, max compresion ration, no attack high release, very high amp in the end and maybe a distortion as an extra amp). Should some pretty crappy stuff...

Ill try this out on an old mix and see if it destroys all dynamics and sound levels like I am thinking it may... oh, you could also cut the lows and highs a bit to decrease the dynamic range even more.

Well, this seems like a good place to find soundfonts...

Does anyone know of any soundfonts that have good instruments to use in ambient-type songs? LousySpy posted a request on page 5 with a link to a clip from a Metroid Prime song. Anything like that instrument would be great... in fact, a lot of the stuff in Metroid Prime is good ambient stuff! Sorry I can't be more specific, I just need stuff to work into some of my ambient songs to make it more ambient sounding (go figure :)).

Xelebes
02-28-2004, 06:28 AM
I don't recommend soundfonts, or soundfonts specifically aimed for ambience. Any soundfont will do as long as you learn how to process the sounds. Experiment with the soundfonts youu have and play around with phasers, flangers, delays, reverbs, distortions. This is how it is created, the cool deep ambient sounds.

I use the Sinfonia pack for rendering my composed music. A few tweaks for your custom needs, and it's near-perfect. It's a big load, so watch your comp usage and volume levels. For an example of something VERY roughly done with this pack, I point you to two things I created, then only recently rendered.

Edit: I'm using the free version. I expect that you'd have much greater options and quality with the full.

http://home.millsaps.edu/~spearls/music/EchoOfHearts_B.mp3
Echo of Hearts. I wanted to try out the brass. It's a quartet: Two trumpets, a trombone, a tuba. I don't think I added too much on top, other than a general reverb. Unpolished.

http://home.millsaps.edu/~spearls/music/AperioMvt1.mp3
Aperio. I was comissioned to do this by a good friend. It's not polished, but you can hear what'll happen if it gets too loud. Added concert hall reverb and live equalizer controls.

Toy can use a TR909 to make cool beats. All you gotta do is put it under a "drumroon" type reverb and then overdrive it a bit. I've been able to get fantastic results from this. You can experiment with other drum machines like the Rhythm Ace, TR808, Sequential Toms... those types.

Samples are infinitely more flexible, and if you want to make an interesting breakbeat/dnb track, flexible drums are essential!!! http://www.djbb.dk/bb_samples.php has an overwhelming number of breakbeat samples and loops - soundfonts should be a last resort!

Dude, using a soundfont for drums is a dumb idea.

As far as flexibility is concerned , I'll agree. I like using soundfonts because they're just easier on the eye at first since you have everything on one score. Plus , soundfonts are (most of the time) made to resemble/model sets or kits that already work very well together. I don't use soundfonts when I'm actually polishing off a track . That's where the flexibility of individual sampler channels comes in (I'll extract single .wav samples from the soundfonts I use the most then tailor them individually as necessary).

That can be frustrating. I know there's sfPack , sfArk , sfArkXT , etc.
Sometimes if the soundfont was compressed with one version of sfArk , using a newer (or older) version might not work .
In any case , I managed to decompress the fonts I got from DarkeSword's page but the only one I kept was the drums_industrial.
Maybe I'll get the orchestral font soon enough.

Soo , yeah . Basically , once the file extension of your soundfont is .sf2 , you should be able to load it into your host app.
You can try to drag -and - drop the sfArk file onto an open window of sfArk . That seems to work even though clicking the font and choosing 'decompress' or 'open with>sfArk' doesn't . It's weird .

Right, so I updated the soundfont site yesterday with two new fonts. If you guys have any requests for sounds that you've heard in my particular remixes, I'll post them up there.

Yes, it took me a while too to get the ones from DarkeSword to work. That squidfont is a monster, takes my computer 5 minutes to load it into the soundfont player. But my computer is a peice of shit.

Yes Darkesowrds are tricky to get the to work

DarkeSword
03-31-2004, 02:31 AM
They take a fair amount of memory. That's the deal with any kind of sample.

A general rule:

Samples need RAM.

Synths need processor power.

KakTheInfected

I still can't get the ones on DarkeSword's page to work. Do they not work in Fruity Loops?

DarkeSword

Are you using the decompression tool I provided? Make sure you extract the .sf2 files.

Then load them with the soundfont player in FL.

KakTheInfected

I've tried. It tells me they're invalid or I have to register them first. What exactly does it mean by register?

DarkeSword
04-01-2004, 07:31 PM
I have no idea what's going on with that.

Are you using a full version of FL with the full version of SFPlayer?

Most softsynths can get a good church organ sound out of them. Use Triangle and Sine waves.

I'm looking for really authentic-sounding guitars.

Bass, acoustic, electric, everything.

Another request.

I need a good choir soundfont, or sample. I already have an excellent "ahh" choir, but now I need a: "ehh" and "ohh" choir. Also, I need a sample of a "ss" to place at the end of a note. So it will sound like:

"Ohh-ss. Ahh-eeh-ohh-ss."

Get what I mean?

Anyway- help me. Thanks.

I need a good Church Organ soundfont. The ones at Hammersound are horrid, and I couldn't find any other ones on the net...could you help me?

First post here. w00t and all. :)

There are two excellent organ packs here: http://www.gbmuk.fsnet.co.uk/soundfonts.html . Both are free for any non-commercial use, and I haven't found anything better anywhere.

Enjoy.

[edit:] Apparently, the english organ *is* up at hammersound, sorry about that. I apparently skipped over it browsing hammersound because I already had it, so I didn't realise it was there. Still, I'm surprised you found it 'horrid', it might at least be worth a second look. Jeux d'Orgues 1&2 were pretty good as well, I thought, and I consider myself very picky.

Also, a request: the traditional Greek instruments! I can't find them anywhere, which seems odd. Specifically, I'm looking for a decent santouri (large hammered dulcimer), bouzouki, baglama, and zourna. If there was a chance that I could find all the other Greek instruments I'd ask, but since I can't even find *those*...

I'd also like to find a good outi/ud, and I *have* seen those around. Early Patches have theirs up as a free sample (http://www.sumerauer.de/early_patches/dokumentation/english/strings.htm), but I don't really like how it handles down deep at all (all props to them, though, because people who sample medieval instruments are just cool on principle.)

And yes, this does have to do with a possible Greek remix of a Rockman theme, and yes I am Greek so I'm not going to screw it up too badly.

Look for "Harp Celtique" on Hammersound or some other Soundfont collection pages. It has 12MB and sounds very natural. Give it a try. Also fits into dark and ambient tunes.

You can't use a soundfont in cooledit pro. CEP is not a sequencer. It's a mixer that lets you mix together waveform files. It doesn't generate tones, or utilize any kind of algorithm to manipulate samples so that you can actually write music with.

Aequitas, check m-#####'s !soundfont thing for strat_marshall2.sf2. This is an awesome guitar, make sure to apply some Overdrive/Distortion to it (although it's pre-distorted, this will make it less static). LAzee, I don't know either, but that sounds cool. However, it may surprise you to find how many of those samples you already have in your sample library, if you've spent some time searching for samples already (it's very rare to find a drum sample that is totally unique without being off-the-wall or strange; a lot of the time, kits are just compilations made from other kits).

Anyway, here's a question: where can I get good electronica hi-hats? If you've heard zwitra's Willed Assault, you know what I'm talking about. Solid, background-providing, in no way clicky or ringy, just totally awesome :P. So I'm looking for hi-hats like these. It's hard for me to distinguish individual hits because it's all so fluid thanks to zwitra's skill, but if anybody has more inisght than I do, I appreciate your input =). I probably already have samples like this somewhere, but I would have no idea that these are the right kind because, as I mentioned, I can't hear the individual hits.

Harp: Miroslav harp is good, but if you cant find a way to buy it then...

Harp: Fluid2, which is an ok harp... need to do noise removal for obscure sounds in some of the samples.

Harpsichord: Fluid2, but EQ it so it brightens up a little more like a harpsichord would sound, and then its actually pretty good.

What's your budget exactly?

I really like Sonic Implants Symphonic strings. It has a rich, and romantic sound in my opinion. There's a mini version of it for around $400-500 with the full version around $900-1000.

If you want to buy something cheaper, I suggest Reason's Orkester, Edirol Orchestra or Garritan Personal Orchestra. These options are around $200-400.

Hello, everyone. Sorry if it's inappropriate to request sample sets for an entire game, but I'm looking for samples from Final Fantasy Tactics (the original). Reason I say this one in particular is because I love how the strings in particular can be thick and busy but at the same time not be obnoxious. All the sampling on that game's OST really amazes me. Anyway, help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi all, new here, but i've got a summer off, and doubt i'll find a job, so i figured i might try my hand at remixing some game music. (don't know what yet, will prolly do something that's not overdone *coughTerracought*)

Anyways, most the music I write is orchestral or wind ensemble oriented....I write for smaller groups as well, such as quartets. I've done my fair share of searching around, have some florestan sets and squidfont...but I'd really like to find some nice solo brass samples....especially baritone and/or euphonium. Preferably free, since i'm a poor arse college student. Also would like to find some good solo french horn samples, i.e. not a horn section. Any help would be appreciated. ^_^

P.S. solo trumpet would be good too, best one i have is a soundfont called Trumpe3D, but it has a crappy attack *ponder* mebbe I can fix the attack myself if i stop being lazy heh.

Vine, you could check out the Miscellanious section at hammersound.net it has 2 choir sound fonts.

I don't need the guitar thing anymore, I found one that was good enough. But I do need something else. I don't know what exactly to call it. Some kind of suspended cymbal, that starts out soft, but over the span of a few seconds rushes in louder, like at the beginning of Disco Dan's Braving Tal Tal Heights. Geh, that wasn't a very good description. . . But if you want to listen to the song, it's from Zelda: Link's Awakening, and if you know what it is, I would be greatful.
