Wonderful guitar work and arrangement here. Definatly a top notch remix.
The quality of the sound and arrangement is great. It's a shame I just
don't like this remix, because if I couldn't get over the dirty feeling it gives
me I'd probably really really like it... but after hearing Death on the Snow
Field, this version of the theme just kinda feels wrong to me. But it's
such high caliber composition I'm torn. This is the kind of file you download
just to have on your harddrive and share, even if you dont like it.

Well, I'm not a good commenter, I really know absolutely nothing about remixing, but I do know that I'm in love with this one. This is not only my favorite game song ever but it is done so wonderfully. I LOVE the way this was done. I play it every morning, really. It's amazing.

I gave this song a 8/10. Inappropriate voices, decent rhythm, GREAT melody, and a WONDERFUL overall affect. Just the voices seem to be very immature in general.

an awesome take on an already awesome track. this is easily one of the best remixes on the site, just for the quality of the sound and all the work put into it. my only complaint is the trumpet (? i tihnk it was a trumpet, but its its not somebody please tell me) right beofre the kick ass guitar starts sounds a little bad. :D don't mind my nit picking, its a great track

I forgot if I previously commented on this or not, but it's worthy of two comments anyway. This has got to be, if not my favorite ReMix, high up on my list. It just creates so many different moods at once... really great music.

I like this one a lot, however I wouldn't say, "One of the best on the site." I dunno why, it's just not as good to me. I think the intro is really the part I don't like. It just sounds so... ugh. However, that is not to say that you shouldn't download it. I definitely would (and obviously already have). Something about it just doesn't seem right to me... I think the nicest part is when the lead is going and you have that weird instrument of which I don't know the name in the background. It just fits so well. 4/5 stars.

This is definately one of my most favorite of all time. When this first came out I was just blown away because at that time there was no game music as great as what Ailsean did. Truely one of the cornerstone masterpieces of all game music remixes.

Ailsean comes in with another beautifull arrangement at psychedelic guitars and amazing arangements of music. I dont know where he gets the inspiration, but he deserves a medal for it..
The song is overall long enough and still makes you come back for more when you're done listening to it, it still clings to the same mood of the original song, and gives it, as said, a psychedelic touch with the competely well mastered guitars.
The best Final Fantasy 6 mix so far, in great competition with Death on the Snowfield.

And that's a good thing... A VERY GOOD THING.
The only thing that could make this song any better is if Yngwie Malmsteen did a guitar solo on it. I would wet myself right then and there. Yeah! Rah!! Oh yeah... get rid of the lame "Young and the Restless" intro WTF?!?

get rid of the lame "Young and the Restless" intro WTF?!?
I don't think so the intro is lame at all :? ....I think the intro is what makes this song beautiful...it's so nice makes you think as there was this girl locked in a dark tower waiting for a hero to come rescue her...I think the a remix with sounds just as the intro had would make a very nice remix....the creator of this song should make an Ayla's Theme from chrono trigger as a reminisance type of song that alisean used for the intro of this song...

Best remix ever.
Ailsean clearly sets the standard by which all other guitar remixers follow. His back up synth (and drums) might need a little work now and then, but his guitars are always the star of the show.
:D :D THIS SONG ROX!!! I found it on a site one day, and it's what brought me to love OC. If you dont like it, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!?
Sure, sure, not all of us have played FFVI, but that shouldn't matter!!! It's still this site's best remix.

There I was. Slowly looking through the ReMix Reviews, minding my own business. I saw 'Terra In Black', with 2 pages of replies. I thought 'this might be good, I'll go check it out.' Boy was I wrong. This is not good. It's infinitely better. Better than good. Better than great. Better than any friggin' word in the english language.
I was going to make some wise crack about DJP's choice of words in his description, but after hearing the song, I think those words are well justified.
Awesome. Another one to add to my OCR classics list :D

I love it. As an avid guitarist, I couldn't help but get goosebumps when your guitar pierced right through. You have a beautiful sound - perfect tone, just the right amount of distortion, and beautiful intonation and phrasing. Again, I love it. Keep it up!
This remix is the best I've ever heard. It's the finest of OC, I think, and it'll be hard to do something better than this one...

Best on the site? I don't think I'd go that far, but this song and Death on the Snowfield were probably the 2 best at the time. I would have to say that this song definitely raised the bar of what's to be expected on this site. It is probably one of the 3 best Terra themes that I have heard to date. The other 2 being the Death on the Snowfield remix and the version on Final Fantasy Pray. Speaking of which, I highly recommend getting Final Fantasy Pray if you can find it. You will probably need to resort to ordering it online since I haven't been able to find ANY music stores that sell. But as for the Terra in Black, it's definitly worth the download. There is no excuse for not at least giving it a chance. Oh, BTW, the trumpet thingy in the intro sounds too fake, but other than that, this is a great piece.

I'm finally breaking my silence after watching remixes come and go from this site over the past 2 years. "Terra in Black" is definitely one of the best remixes on the site ever- top 5, easy. The guitar drives the theme so beautifully and powerfully; superstar musician quality. I didn't notice the fakey horns until the second time through, after I heard the guitars- the real guitar and fake horn just don't mix well. Still, Ailsean can't be beat in the remix arena.

Not to criticize, but how often do remixes "go"?
Just poking a bit of fun though. And I agree, this is among my favorites. ever since I heard it long ago. I too have been silent, its only been recently that I've decided to partake in the forums.
Well who knows? Maybe I'm wrong, maybe there were some remixes that were "voted off the island". If so I want them, if anyone has them, if they exist. I must complete my collection, for better or for worse. :?
P.S. Before anyone rags on me, let me put this in bold AMONG my favorites.

well I think that this is one of the best remixes on this site, and one of the best I have ever heard. The fact that im a fanatic of final fantasy does hinder my response a bit, but hell, whoever has heard ff6 and then lisetned to this will definitly have the exact same response as me, in the words of DJ pretzel, "this fucking kicks ass."

Remixes can go either by a decision by DJ Pretzel if it sounds too much like the original song (ie Ripping the song, etc), or by a personal request from the remixers themselves.
Edit: Funny, I though my thoughts on this song were already on this threat. Oh well - very good song. Infact, my exgirlfriend said it was romantic. I agreed and disagreed. Definitely worth the download though.

Its cool to see people still talking about this. Its a classic IMO
I really like this mix, tho not nearly as much as a lot of people apparently.
bad first:
1 i think there's some good harmony going on, but i cant tell because all i can hear is the guitars.
2 the trumpet...i cant believe the judges thought my trumpet patch sounds unnatural but said nothing about this trumpet.
3 i dont like the distortion that is used ont he guitars. the compression IMO makes them sound unnatural, and theres nto enough reverb.
On to the good
1 guitars are great, the interplay between them is great.
2 like i said, there's great harmony going on, i just cant hear it.
3 the end of one of the solo choruses, at around 2:55 sounds VERY abbey road to me. check it out and see if you kind of hear what i'm hearing.
nice stuff, but not flawless.

All I can say is Ailsean outdid himself here with this remix. This remix is so good, that it could very well be used in the opening of a movie about Final Fantasy 6. Ailsean really knows how to kick butt with his guitar. Keep up the good work, Ailsean!! :D

Not to offend anyone else, this is just my opinion, but like DjPretzel said...
"At this moment in time, on this site, I think this is the best ReMix. This fucking kicks ass. I can't speak intelligently about it, it's too damn good. It's EXACTLY what the original should have sounded like. If you don't download this, you have committed a grave sin. REAL electric guitar, driving drums. Oh to hell with it, I can't BEGIN to do it justice in words. This could be a 300meg download and it'd be worth it. Get it. "
and I hate to repeat that, but its the damn truth, thanks Ailsean!

It's, uh, it's a decent backup tune with a good guitar solo on top. Highly overrated, if you ask me.
Edit: Actually, the guitar solo is really well done. It's just that the background pales in comparison. Which is unfortunate.

This is definitly a very good remix, but I agree with some of the others here that it is a bit overrated. The intro is not very good, nor are the trumpets. It's predictable, except for the solo, which is slightly irritating. When you have this much talent and potential, do something with it! You know, change tempos, change the drumline, spice up the background, anything. Besides the intro, everything /sounds/ fine, but considering the length, it doesn't hold my attention. Again, I'm not saying the melody was anything less than excellent, I'm saying that more could have been done.

Yah haveta figure, though... It is a remix of a song from a game which featured...what?...MIDI format music? One can't expect much variety from a tune of that sort. I think there is something to be said for, and enjoyed about, simple tracks like this remix. After all, consider the RPG music we've all come to love. Much of it is quite simplistic, and I bet most gamers can attest to the presence of an RPG soundtrack CD in their players at least occasionally. =D It's good stuff, regardless of the lack of variety. That's the nature of videogame music.
Personally, I get the feelings from the "Terra in Black" remix which I'm sure the artist intended. It causes emotion to well up in me the same way it does when I listen to the original version of Terra's theme. Truly a beautiful song whatever its form.

Well, I registered here just so I could say "this song rocks".
I'm a bit biased of course. I used to have a tape with 45 minutes of the original, recorded amateurishly from the TV, with which I sent myself to sleep every damn night for about half a year, until the tape broke.
I couldn't say if this remix is better. I suck at judging things like that. But along with the original, and other variations, it's in a field far above any other music. It's nice with some variation, too.

Although the trumpets do sound somewhat fake and a lot of potential of the artist was most likely not evoked in this song, as others have shown, I still think that this is a great song. I think it still holds up to many of the other mixes on the site and so it retains a spot on my playlist for never becoming boring or dull.

All right. I've listened to this remix a lot and I think I've finally got a solid opinion.
The guitar rocks, hands down no questions asked. Ailsean has proven over and over again he's an incredible guitar artist, and the touch of a REAL guitar perhaps makes this song as highly acclaimed as it is.
However, I think that's the problem. The real guitar sounds great, but it's backed up with a lot of very obviously synthesized sounds. This is what really turns me off in the remix, the way the great sounding guitar grates right up against the bleeps and clicks and the synth trumpet. The drums sound real 80's to me as well, which isn't my bag, though someone else might like it.
Overall, the guitar work was great and refreshing, and adds a powerful tone to the remix. However, the synth and the almost overdone quality with the strings and drums and trumpets really detracts from it and leaves the rest of the mix, outside of the guitar, feeling kind of impotent. A good remix, but not my favorite on the site.

I absolutely loved this remix. When I first heard it I wasn't so sure, but that's partly because I didn't really like Terra's Theme in FF6 that much on its own anyway. I was actually sent this remix ages ago by a friend and I decided to listen to it a couple of times, and it really did grow on me. The guitar playing is amazing, I don't think anyone can doubt that. I thought the intro was great too, as was the improvised section at about 2:40... the whole thing was just amazing. :D

You're saying you DON"T like the trumpet? I think it adds character to the intro, and while it's not exactly smoothly integrated, works well to build up into the main melody.
Anyway, this is 100% Kick ass and then some.
Just one more thing: Does this remind anyone of the Law & Order opening theme at all? I thought it did slightly, and I'm not saying anything specific here, but it brings the latest episode into my mind every time I hear it...but i'm a big law & order freak, so that might have something to do with it too...

This is my first post here, and I decided to make it on one of my personal favorites. I've read a lot about the debate 'Which is better: Terra in Black or Death on the Snowfield' and I listened to both of them... but I think this is better.
Death on the Snowfield is a great track... but when I listen to it, it just doesn't seem as remixed as this one, if that makes any sense. It just seems too like the original, IMO. That and I love the guitar :)
This is a very powerful piece and ranks among my top favorites.

This song is friggin amazing! I love Ailsean's proficiency with the electric guitar, and his choice to remake old stuff. KICKASS!
Ah, one of my favorite Final Fantasy remixes. I didn't like the music in 6 as much as in the later games, but this remix takes the original tune's "awesome" factor and raises it exponentially. I just love the electric guitar in this mix, especially around 2:50.

This mix is a perfect example of how to remix. Ailsean took a mediocre VG song and turned it into one of the top five mixes on the site.
The background synth and bass lines provide a wonderful atmosphere for this mix, but what REALLY takes this mix to the next level is the second guitar. Without it, this mix would still be good--the mix's first climax is when the first guitar kicks in--but using it fill in the pauses in the original theme with noodling worked so incredibly well (see: ~2:15). I hope to be able to write harmonies and complimentary melodies half as well some day.
The only thing I would change is the pinch harmonic in the main guitar at about 2:30.

I wouldn't say that.
This is definitly a good remix, it is way above the bar. But it's NOT groundbreaking, and it certainly hasn't changed the scene much.
Ok, basically, this remix is mad sweetalicious. Saying anything lesser of it is a sin and you should die. Assuming I didn't appreciate it from the first time I hit play I think the part that caught me the most was the solo. Blew me away. I never really thought of doing what they did for a video game song let alone throwing things like that into the fray. I approve.
I actually love the original Terra's theme, so this song is like an added bonus to the pot. From the classical style intro to beautiful fiery licks on the distortion geet, this remix is definatly worth anyones time. The abrupt switch from 'classical' to heavy is brilliantly played out for a sense of drama and almost cinematic vibrance. The electric guitar is handled in such a way that an ignorant listener would swear that it was something from the great guitar gods. I don't know whether its the individual portions of the song, or the entire mix in general that sold it to me, but this is without a doubt one of my favorite remixes.

rolling stone magazine came out with a list of the 100 best guitarists recently, and my brother called me up to tell me about it:
<ME> really? the 100 best guitarists?
<HIM> yeah, all 100, i disagreed with a few here or there, but all the big names were on the list
<ME> which number was Ailsean?
<HIM> Ailsean? which band did he play for?
<ME> no band, he just does some awesome stuff on OCR
<HIM> i dont think he is on the list....
<ME> look again man, he has to be there
<HIM> i'm looking right now, the name 'Ailsean' doesnt appear anywhere
<ME> well, Ailsean must be an alias. when i find out his real name, i'm sure it will be on the list
so yeah, rolling stone is stupid. how could they leave out ailsean?
some people can draw out emotion with every note. he is one of them. I was listening to the "Time and Space" Cd the other day, and i accidently had it on repeat for the first track, but it didnt really matter, cause the first track was Scars Left By Time by Sean Stone & Dale North. I listened all night and i could listen to it now without losing interest in it. And dont get me started on "You're not Alone!" ...

When I first came to OC Remix, this was the first thing recommended to me, and I'm sure the hell glad it was. This remix keeps the same mood as the original, and the guitar sounds great. It's the right tone (is that the right word?) for the piece IMO, and is one of those instuments that instill feelings. The trumpets at the beginning, while they sound a bit fake, I still beleive are good. And whatever synth it was at the beginning, it sounds good in the background during the intro. Later through it, the drums seem to take its place, and quite well. Altogether an awesome remix, and as an RPer (Role-Playing, fanfiction), I must say it help me to write quite a lot. Also a good listen any other time. ^_^;;
9.7/10, -.3 for the little fakeness of the trumpets.

This is utterly insane. This is simply my favorite remix ever. There really is no better remix and if there was it would be one of Ailsean's. It is too bad that all remixes can't be this good. It is too bad that no other remix on this site even comes close to being as good. The only thing that any other remixer can do now is bow down. I honestly can't wait until Ailsean dishes out another. Amazing dude...... simply amazing.

This is one of the best ReMixes. When I first heard it, I felt in Heaven! By the time I'm writing this, I'm listening to it... for second time in a row. This song is telling me: "Hello. Pleased to meet you. Now I'm one of YOUR songs; I'm part of you now, your new companion." Damn! It sounds sooooo pretty! It has electric guitar, violin, cello... need I ask for more?

I've been wondering around this site for a while hoping(silently) that I whould never have to comment on one of these works. Well looks I was wrong - djprezel & all other positive reveiws(I don't think there was I totally outright negative post) have already given enough aclaim to a true masterwork. I think this just might urge me into contributing some of my own works.(I think I'll have to listen to some of this sites offerings)

I respected Ailsean as a musician before this. Now I deify him.
Simply an excellent piece of music, arranged or not. I love the way the guitar sounds. Strings always evoke powerful emotions in me, and only the best of string arrangements give me chills.
This gave me chills. Bravo, man.

I liked every part of this mix. The guitar was simply awesome, the beginning starts out kinda slow and then just builds, I felt an actual jolt when the guitar started in. It's so rare that a song can trigger a response like that. Great job!

"Blorf" :vomit:
*Without reading every review for this track*
It would appear that I may be the only person who does not like this track. In fact, it drives me nuts. I can't stand it, and even less so when other people ooze praise about it. It may be somewhat well put together, but it's as gimmicky as the worst of the 80's Big-Wig-Metal. I hear it and think "Slaughter-winger-whitesnake-cinderella (and countless others)." Maybe I should just refer to it as Slingersnakerella?
We need to take steps forward with music, not backwards. "Retro" is something that should only be used in good taste. Not with a musical style, such as Hair-metal, which was never really that good to begin with.
If the artist wanted to do a "modern rock" remix, there are far better ways to go. By which I certainly do NOT mean that it should sound more like the corporately owned, and "force-fed to us" crap like Korn, Cradle of Filth, Staind, P.O.D., or any other band that sports an angry, over-privileged white-boy with dreadlocks.
Maybe the cheese-factor was intentional and meant as tongue-in-cheek humor. If that's the case, not only did he succeed, but most people are not smart enough to have caught on. In which case, I applaud your creativity, and ability to slip a joke past everyone.
I'm sure this review will get under some people's skin, especially those who worship the track, but guess what:
Get over it. You're entitled to love what I consider to be bad music, just as much as I'm entitled to hate what you consider to be good music... and vice versa

Why on earth did you mention KoRn when talking about Terra In Black? I mean, seriously.
You just said A sounds like B and C sounds like D so TiB is like Winger and I like writing with black ink and the time 8:37 scares the living piss out of me. Basically.
If I compared every orchestral ReMix to Bach, I'd be foolish.
By the way, if you grew up listening to 80s music, you'd know that TiB sounds absolutely nothing like it.

Umm... several things:
1. I mentioned Korn as what not to do when trying to give music a "modern rock" sound. You'd know that if you opened your eyes and actually read my post.
2. Lot's of high-end, dueling guitars... yeah, that's pretty 80's to most people I know.
3. Did you not see where I said "I'm sure this review will get under some people's skin, especially those who worship the track, but guess what:
Get over it. You're entitled to love what I consider to be bad music, just as much as I'm entitled to hate what you consider to be good music... and vice versa"
... so, um. Get over it.
4. It's my opinion and my review of the track. So please shut up. If you want to continue this, then take it to the General Discussion forum. Of course, it's not like I'd ever reply, considering how you're not going to change my opinion about it at all.
5. You're not sticking to the "review guidlines," and in order for me to defend my position, have provoked me to break them as well. Post whatever you like about me or my review, or how you disagree with my opinion. I will not be replying back. I accept the fact that you don't like my review, or that you don't think it was well founded. So what. Just move on, dude.
6. Is one "black mark" going to destroy this remix or the person who created it? Do you want to live in a world full of "yes men?" You can't get everyone to agree on any issue.
OK... It's been a long day, and I'm admittedly cranky. So now I'm just going to bed.
PS: Don't take any of that too personally,

 You need to get laid.
I'm using this song as my Philosophy of Music discussion piece. It's deep on so many levels, and since most people in the class have never heard of Final Fantasy VI (and definately not Terra's Theme) it should be cool.
I think I'ma gonna compare it to the piano version just to show the way that a single melody can stay the same and yet change so much.

You're the one so avidly defending a remix of video game music, to the point of flaming other people about their sex lives.
I know where he's coming from. I feel that this mix is very solid and well-done, but its absurd amount of blind devotion makes it seem worse than it really is (I dislike FFVII for the same reason).
Even though I'm not crazy for this mix, I still admire its technical skill and enjoy listening to it. Well done, Ailsean!

This song relates nothing to 80's hair metal. I don't quite understand where that came from, but it's rather unrelated to this peice entirely. Andricon, you are making a gross generalization by saying that this sort of guitar sound, instantly equals 80's hair metal. Which is simply not true. This peice is a unique composition, and was orchestrated very well. I do not agree that he is deserving to be in the top 100 lists of guitarists, he isn't that skilled(well, it doesn't show on this track). He does deserve to get some recognition for his moderate ability to shred(although only momentarily). I do find this song compelling, but the review you posted was completely fabricated. Maybe if you try expanding your musical horizons, you will notice that not all music in a single genre, is under the same sub-genre. Hair-metal? No, my friend, not at all. Before you negatively review a song, please understand what you are writing about before-hand. Otherwise people will be offended, not only by harsh words, but by your blatant showing of ignorance.
Edit: It seems I was very repetative in this review.....Great.
Something about the interaction between the guitars and the synth makes me like this song: it's very soothing yet powerful. There's a slightly canned feel to the samples and a "Days of Our Lives" vibe going on in the beginning, but this does not detract from the way this sucked me in, and does not change the fact the composition was well thought out.
I have no emotional attachment to final fantasy 6 and had been exposed to all sorts of guitar remixes by the time I heard this (those two facts might make my take somewhat unique), and I think his newer stuff outshines this both in composition and production quality. That's no knock against this song at all: it's still really enjoyable. The highlight for me was after the bridge-like section, when the guitar canon returns at 2:12, but this time with the first guitar playing lower notes than before (adds some snarl that the song was just screaming for).

I love this remix!
I started by downloading all the tracks from FF7, and then from those tracks, chose the ones I liked and then downloaded remixes by the same artists.
I have never played FF6 and listened to this track before reading any reviews of it so I would like to think that I have a non-biased opinion of it.
From the moment I heard it I loved it and now it is probably my favourite piece of music of all time :p.
As to the heated argument between Andricon and sketch, I take sketches side whole-heartedly. How can you possibly not like this piece of music!?!?! My mum's a classical pianist - passed grade 8 before she was 10, and even she thinks it's not bad.

GREAT Stuff... I love it..
This was the first remix i heard from here.. so this site has become my main source for music... by the way since i heard this remix i've been learning to play guitar and synth. Great stuff man.... just awesome...
BUT! of course i do have A SINGLE crit.
the intro needs a LOT more depth... more instruments etc.. less synth strings.. maybe try using a real violin or some very good violin samples, and for the trumpet part back it up with some more variety in horns and string bass.
that would be awesome.. :)
I'm still a newbie to music, mainly im trying to improve my guitar and synth skills, so i have to compliment your awesome guitar playing, you are aeons ahead of me in music skills.
all in all i give this a 8/10.. with a little bit more bang added to the intro i think this could be even more awesome. :)

I was frankly blown away by this one...it's one of the better FF-VI mixes out there, in my opinion. The intro is sublime, and the guitar that comes in is an inspired touch that elevates this mix to the next level of greatness. Highly, highly recommended for the FF fan!

A beautiful song indeed. Every time I listen to it I can see myself playing the game and living the experience all over again.
It has an awsome intro and you just don't expect the guitars comming but when they do it blows you away.
I remember the first time I listened to it... the second the guitars came into play I just started to cry thinking to myself "THIS is the most beautiful song I've heard in my life".

Wow. That's the only thing that comes to mind when hearing the guitar layering, and sound. I'd cut off my left hand to make a guitar sound that good.
Although, the rest of the composition could have sounded a little more 'real'. It would really have added that extra factor if the opening would have sounded a bit more orchestral than synthetic.
Overall though, I just can't get enough of that kick-ass guitar. Definately gonna listen to this over and over.

When I first heard this song i loved it, and because of that it will always stay on my hard drive...but it did start to get a little old after a while. It just lacks that timeless ethereal feel of death on the snowfield, which to me will never get old. Overall nothing bad about it, but i have heard better.

Overall this is a somewhat decent rendition of a classic and heartrending theme. I can still remember clearly the first time i watched those Magitek Armor suit/mechs clomping their way towards Narshe in all of their crappy SNES (but awesome back then) 3D'ish glory while Terra's theme crept into the intro music. Ooohh yeah, i had goosebumps. I was worried i'd never get to hear it again and would be doomed to resetting the SNES and going through the intro over and over - good thing that wasn't the case! Uematsu and his contemporaries were able to make magic out of simple midi'ish effects on a that 'ol consol. Before I even really comment on Terra in black, I have to point out that paying homage to that sort of music at all is quite awesome in itself. You're all Remix fans already of course, so there's no point in preaching to those who are already diggin all this though i guess ^.^ With all of that being said, I can't help but to agree with other's in that the guitar in this song was quite awesome. I'm trying the guitar myself a bit and well, seeing as how my main instrument is trombone, trying to hold down and pluck strings to make music anywhere NEAR as nice as that in Terra in Black is quite impossible for me at the moment. It's because of this that I am truely appreciative of the skill and emotion that went into laying out Terra's theme so well. Being a brass player however, i'm afraid i must also admit that the smarmy synth Trumpets utterly ruined the intro for me. It's because of this that i'm not really getting the total buzz of euphoria a lot of you are experiencing. I hate to say it, but i actually like that Death on the Snowfield remix more. Both however, are excellent remixes in their own right. Also, it just so happens i'm partial to the accoustic sound of Death on the Snowfield.
Note: Sorry this is so long. It's my first post and i've gotten quite carried away.
Maybe it's because I'm a huge fan of electric guitar, but for whatever reason, I really, really like this one. Stop reading this and download this remix. It's that excellent.

I believe DjPretzel said it right: This is the way it should have sounded in the game. I enjoyed the subtle changes to the melody of the original them to accommodate the new instruments. The double layering of the theme also worked wonders for the cinimatic value. Truly, this is my favorite mix on this site - and I hope you keep up this quality of work.

Do electric guitar solos get old when used through the entire duration of a song? This remix proves that it don't. There are several timbres of guitar going on that play off each other in this remix and it is truly amazing to listen to. Now if only someone could go back and remaster the synth parts.

This is a pretty old song, but I had to give my 2 cents. I came upon this song by accident. I was trying to get the FF7 ROBOVoice (my friend love funny stuff like it), and when I saw they had a torrent, I went "cool! I can get this song straight quick." I quickly realized that it was half of the entire repository, but I decided to keep on it. I waited until a song finished dling, and the first one was Terra in Black... to think I might've never heard this if it hadn't dled so quickly.
The way I describe this song is beautifully powerful. One of those songs you can close your eyes to and just feel the music. I haven't listened extensively (if at all) to the bands that Andricon compared this song to, but it really reminds me of is Trans-Siberian Orchestra, with teh soft instrumental going into electric guitar. Bravo, Ailsean. Now, to get my hands on a copy of FF6.

This site needs more great guitar remixes like this one. Dance beats and piano have their moments but nothing is like a well mixed guitar track. Actually I find that some of the background sounds lessen the incredible goodness of the guitar work. I especially think I'd like it a lot better if the theme for "The Young & the Restless" wasn't playing in the background for half the song. Still, it's one of the best FF mixes there is.

Good stuff. Plenty of people in this thread were ridiculously fanboy about it, and plenty others were ridiculously anti-fanboy, but in the end it's good stuff. The trumpet patch in the beginning is almost painful holding notes, but it doesn't stick around for long, and it's neither the first nor last time I'll be hearing a shitty trumpet patch, so whatever. Also, those intro beat-keeping chimey/bell-like whatevers were indeed painful reminders of my mom watching CBS soaps when I was a kid, but ok, once the trumpet kicks in my pain is diverted away, and then they fade away entirely. FINALLY, we get to the Ailsean guitars, and all is right with the world. Awesomely 80s, he shreds about as well as I'll ever expect from someone not getting paid for their efforts... and I happen to LOVE 80s music, once all the long-hair, drag makeup, and fucktarded costumes are removed from the equation. So yeah, a few problems, a few awesome points, and some seriously over-shadowed work going on behind the guitars... and it adds up to a nice whole. Again, good stuff.
(Sorry to bring this back up, but since it's been bumped every other month for the past 3 years I figured you'd get over it...)

This song remind me of Super Mario 64 a bit. Especially the part at 1:50. The guitar playing has a very nice sound to it. This could be called the best song on OC. But it depends on your personal tastes. For me, it's just a really good song deserving a 10, but the melodious parts want me to take off a half a point or so...

Honestly, this sounds like Steve Vai got a hold of a Final Fantasy song. Incredible work, solid arrangement, flawless execution.
well obviously the song is good, I'd even say great but this has nothing to do with Steve Vai man...
Since everything positive have already been said about this song, I'll say what I think could have used some improvement.
First of all, the drum sounds are not very good; it looks like the guy went for a true drum feel but didn't succeed very well. Maybe that's just my impression.
Second: the samples from the rhythm track aren't up to par either, but well that's a pretty old mix. I still love those "icy" glockenspiel things going on.
Third: I don't really like the guitar tone... too loud, too compressed and too chorused, but that's all too subjective.
Four: Nothing overly original about this song except he did away with the triplet march style and went for a 16th feel in place. Of course there's always the solo and the break after.
At 2:40, I don't really like what's going on with the guitar (beginning of the solo). In fact I don't like the first twenty seconds of it, but the rest is purely great. The slow break after the solo totally HAD to be there, there's no way around it so props for that.
Now I'm just reacting to people saying it's the best music ever. When I say I don't like something in this remix, it doesn't mean I think it's crap, it means I think it could have been better and therefore this is not a perfect, amazing, the best ever mix.
In terms of guitar playing, I can clearly see a distinction between Ailsean and known pros like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani or Mark Knopfler, whereas I think McVaffe's Drum'n Bass grooves or Blind's trance are up to par with the pro ones.
So to sum up, I have to say in all humility as a guitar player that I do not think I could have done something as good as Ailsean's work (cause we have to admit, he's got talent) with this ReMix, but I still don't think it's perfect.

Honestly, this is one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard, even surpassing the original Terra's theme. Someone should go the the soon to be held, LA D Concert, go up to Nobuo and let him listen to this shit, and see how he reacts :D
The music creates such an atmosphere, like some people said, telling a story. Right from the start, I'm getting the impression of a Princess in a dark tower, trying to get out.

What can I say? I just love a good metal ballad. The original song was wonderfully mood-setting and translates pretty well to this genre. I'm particularly impressed that this translated to non-overblown metal ballad - the whole thing reeks of pure emotion without me immediately getting the idea "oh, it's metal, angry metal". This has soul. I particularly like the soft, nearly acoustic ending. (By the way, for great effect, stick "Death on the Snowfield" after this one in the playlist. They go well together :) )
Though I kind of disagree with this being appropriate for the game... if they turned the game into a live-action movie, this might be appropriate for that.
In all, one of my favorite remixes of this tune.

While being a newcomer to the site in any offical capacity, I have been listening to ReMixes here for over a year and a half and my collection is well over 5GB.
However, out of all the songs I have kept on my harddrive, there is only one that I not only learned how to play, being someone inclined to learn an instrument when I get bored enough, but it is also the most beautiful, soul ripping rendition of the otherwise overkilled Terra's theme that I could possibly imagine.
Not only does it do an immense justice to the original, I agree with Dj Pretzel when this is how the original should have been done, but it's also reminiscent, atleast personally, of the emotionally infused instrumentalism that one could expect to hear from a new age symphony.
Truly refreshing, and yet hard enough to run with any dog of the metal genre. I must admit, I have this song burnt onto about 7 cds and it's on every playist my winamp has.
A truly dynamic and wonderful masterpiece; mi complimenti.

Man, I was going to write a long spiel on how great it was, but Osiris said everything that needed to be said!
I'm naturally thin-skinned, emotionally speaking. A lot of the time, it's a curse: the slightest hint of rejection, and I go into a funk for days. It has its good side, though: when I listen to music, I tend to pull a lot more emotional context out of it.
'Soul-ripping' doesn't begin to describe it.
One of the first times I heard this song, I was in a semi-permanent funk (running about five years). This song jolted me out of it for months (no mean feat). It felt like it was talking about me, like it was a way to be stronger.
The beginning felt like a boxer on the mat- somebody telling himself how weak and pathetic he is- somebody about to give up. Then, he decides that he can't. He has to keep going. He slowly gets up, to the awe of the crowd (who thought him beaten into total submission), and gets back into the fight. This time, he's beating the other guy back- he's so fired up that he goes above and beyond himself to knock his tormentor out. Then, standing there in the center of the ring, as the ref declares him the winner, he finds his confidence restored, and that as long as he perseveres, he can win any fight. He always had the strength to win, but as long as he doubted himself, he could never use it.
Sorry for rambling like this, but that emotion, that idea, resonates pretty deeply with me. It's a beautiful song, brimming with feeling, and it never leaves my computer/ipod/CD player.

I am thoroughly impressed. Many people, if choosing to do this as a guitar mix, would probably have sped it up. You kept it slow, and it really allowed the notes to ring out nicely and sink in. I also liked the play between the two guitars, it wasn't really dueling, but that second guitar that kept elaborating on the theme (and stayed in it's original octave the second time around) was a really nice addition. When the first guitar drops down, and hits that harmonic, that's one of the nicest notes in the whole song. Really, it was placed and played perfectly. The beginning of the solo is my favourite part, because it's restrained, and the phrasing is beautiful. That bend couldn't be placed any better.
With that much said, the aforementioned trumpet sample did take away from it, but when the guitars come in, all of that can be easily forgotten, and it has earned a spot on my mp3 player. Superb work.

I loved this song from the original - it's really quality, and this mix does it well. The introduction samples seem obviously fake, but the guitar work is EXCELLENT, in and out of the solo. Is it real, or sampled? It's actually hard to tell at times, which really adds quality. It's very good that you stuck to the original chord progression. I HATE it when mixiers screw it up, but this mix does not disappoint the theorist! I liked the ABA form how you started and ended nice and soft, though the ending was very abrupt.
It's an excellent mix. This is going into my playlist.

I think this is the first song I ever listened to on OCRemix. As you can tell, by me being here that I loved it. It's one of those songs that rip your heart out and just tear it up... in a good way. Really, it doesn't get any better then this and I have just under 5 gigs that will attest to that.

Now I save the best Terra Mix for last.
I absolutely loved this song. ABSOLUTELY. I loved how it started small, increased, and became a great song, and its even Metal. I usually hate metal. I loved how it fades in the end too....

who ever knew video game music could be so powerful.
This song demands the listener's attention. You feel moved, by it... it's like you got beat before or whatever but you're coming back and you're just owning everybody... owning 'em up.
Then i see terra doing it, dressed in black as the song suggests with all of her friends in tow standing in defiance of kefka's general losery... That paints an awesome picture imho. worthy of the big screen even.
this song pumps me up... in that "Eye of the Tiger" kinda way, roffel.
Easily one of the top 5 songs on this whole site.
this song is pure awesome. Blew me away. Reading peoples reviews of it could not brace me for the sheer power of that song. The best remix I have EVER heard. Nobuo Uematsus black mages would want to rip this off, THIS is how you remix Final Fantasy!

Wow. I am stunned. Quite the ReMix. The way the guitars came in practically knocked me over. Great job.
I remember lurking way back when this was first posted. It's still the best mix on the site. One of the absolute classics, without a doubt.

What a fantastic mix. I was just listening to it again and had to post. If they ever, for some reason, remade VI, this should totally be what they used for Terra. Aw, man, I can't even elaborate what a sweet rendition it is. Despite the fact that its very hard rock, it is still downright beautiful. Well Done.

This is hands down my favorite mix on the site. I love the guitar, and the background sounds, the amount of reverb is perfect. This song is why I've downloaded the whole library.

Does anyone actually know what gear was used to record this? Been looking for that type of overdrive for years. Sounds a bit like a Tubescreamer, only meatier. Probably a proper tube amp? What kind? What pedal would "emulate" that sounds since there always is one that does?

OH MY GOD THIS SUXS!!!!!
lol just kidding. I have never heard any remix better then this on the site and I've heard quite a few great ones. I REALLY wish this was in the game but then this wouldn't be a remix now would it. The guitar was the best with how it went with the whole song. And when it slower and quieter towards the end I started to tear up. It's like something from Nobuo Uematsu. Yeah that image would be awesome though for some reason I imagined Sora owning all of Organization XIII when I was listening to this. Maybe it was because I was just playing KH2 Final Mix + earlier.

First of all, this is a great song from an even better game, and Ailsean did it no disservice in his remix. The orchestral opening sets you up for the startling, raw (in emotion) guitar, and the original guitar solo is just awesome. In fact, I like this so much, I'm considering having this played at my [life-changing event].

A brilliant version of Terra song, which is simply one of the best I have ever heard. Pretty well done job!
Also, I used this remix for an AMV which was dedicated to a friend. (I didn't upload it, but If someone would like I can upload to megaupload or something)

I share these quite a bit with the ScoreHero/Guitar Hero community, but for whatever reason not usually this one. I think that's a bit silly. :)

This is seriously one kick-ass remix of Terra. The start isn't so hot (But that's just my opinion), but once the guitar kicks in, it just sends shivers done my spine.

This is the kind of remix I love to hear when I'm sifting through pre-OCR01000 mixes :-D Creative, utterly emotive, and the samples, while not perfect, are hardly enough to deter me from listening to the song over and over again. Guitar tone is perfect for the dark, forlorn mood.
One of the best classic songs on the site, and I think its popularity will continue for a long time to come.

A truly amazing piece!
Has a powerful feel to it, but doesn't overdo it. This certainly makes my top 10 favorite ReMixes.
One of the top 10 most popular mixes on the site for a very good reason. It's not as flashy as some others, but it's damn solid, and perfectly paced.
Legendary.

This was probably the song that drove me to OCRemix in the first place.
I am not exactly a fan of the MIDI-sounding intro, but everything after that is just perfect. So much emotion in his playing.
EDIT: I'm hearing it again after a long time and, damn, I know every single note of this by heart. It's that gorgeous. One of the best mixes I've ever heard.

Never listened to it before. I must agree with everyone that it is one of the best (old) remixes of the website.
The guitar playing, mixing with the pads/synths, is amazingly emotional. The song feels tragic but a bit happy at the same time. Loving it. Instant favourite.
I agree with djp. This is what the original should have sounded like. The synth choice in the beginning really set the same mood as the game's opening. It sounds like a "snowy" synth. The guitars are nice and clear, and well-performed. This mix just rocks in every way.
