Time to revitalize the monthly tournament!

REGISTRATION
Make a post in this thread, stating your AIM screen name, by Thursday, January 24th @ 11:59 pm EST. You will be added to one of the tournament's three divisions within 3 days of registration.
You may play anyone in a scheduled game once you are added to a division.

FORMAT
The tournament consists of two phases, League and Bracket.
During the League Phase, each player may play everyone in their division TWICE (as white AND black), and everyone outside of their division ONCE.
The inter-divisional color scheme has a rock-paper-scissors relationship.

Players in the ROCK DIVISION play as white against players in the SCISSORS DIVISION, who play as black.
Players in the PAPER DIVISION play as white against players in the ROCK DIVISION, who play as black.
Players in the SCISSORS DIVISION play as white against players in the PAPER DIVISION, who play as black.

The League Phase will end on Thursday, January 31st @ 11:59 pm EST.
At this time, the Bracket Phase will begin, with the THREE DIVISION CHAMPIONS and THREE WILD CARDS in a six-player bracket.
The format follows pre-realignment NFL playoffs (1990-2001), so if you're looking for an example, that's it.

The two highest-seeded division winners will get byes in the first round of the bracket.
The lowest-seeded division winner and highest seeded wild card will get choice of color.

GAMES
Each game must be played on a mutually available and relatively stable chess server.
Use clocks with a 10-minute initial time, 15-second increment, and report all results directly to the thread (with colors noted, please).

WIN = 1 point.
DRAW = ½ point.

If you do not play a scheduled game, you will not get points.

If someone can come up with a good system for randomizing color in a one-game round-robin, please let me know. I've been considering it and will probably figure out a way tonight, but keep in mind the following:

1) It must be clear who plays whom as what color.
2) One game vs. each.
3) Must allow for incoming players.
4) Largest variation between white & black games is one.

I'm thinking it may have to keep the drawing system of three groups like we have now, but there would need to be a way to determine the games inside the groups. And the groups wouldn't be listed :P

There are certainly opportunities for a lot of you to get games in, even if your division is stagnant. Currently, the rock division has two of the wild-cards, but every other division is completely up for grabs if you just play some games.

In hindsight, this was a good idea that's plagued again by the issue of dead groupings. Paper has yet to record a single in-division game, which is where rock's strength lies. Ultimately, my idea to cut down on the number of individual games worked, there aren't any skyrocketing scores (little by little, which is far more manageable), but next time around we'll do something a little bit differently.

I've concocted a visual table which allows me to assign colors for single-game round robins in a predetermined fashion. In short, we've got randomization...sort of. There will be no divisions next time around, and fewer games. I wanted one-game round robins because I want everyone to focus on single-game strategies, because that's what real tournament chess is about - one game at a time. This time around I played one game at a time, coming back to a previous match later on...I want to foster that sort of competitiveness between everyone.

This would also allow for more people to play the maximum necessary games. In essence, back to June 2006!

There is a significant change in the playoff format, since dP was the only one to answer, and he voted 2 and I vote 1 and my vote is the tiebreaker etc etc etc...Anyways...

You will play ONE game at 10/15 time controls against your opponent.
Higher seed chooses color. In case of a draw, switch color and play again.
First one to record a victory wins the match and advances.

I know that as a group we've never really been good about playoffs.

I won't start the next tournament until this one is either done or mostly done (damathacus is very MIA for a little while so I know we won't be playing that game).

Don't forget, you CAN play games ahead as if the result of your current match is a victory, but I do not encourage it as a replacement because it forces me to be subjective. That being said, I'll probably do it anyways :P

It'll be three-phased (league, pool, and final), single-round-robin (with assigned colors), so I'm a little torn on the scheduling (I'd like at least 24 days for the first phase, and probably 14 for the second) and number of players to advance (but it'll probably be six).

And I'll probably call it March.
