Before I get flamed, I did a little search to try and find to see if there was already a thread for this, but apparently there is not.

I think it would be nice if we all, dug around in our digital coffers, and shared our very first compositions (along with links to your favorite personal best mix or lastest mix) with the rest of the OCREMIX community so that newcomers and beginners can see your personal progress and how we can see how far your wonderful talents have developed, and also so you can satiate our undying curiosity to see what you used to sound like.

I personally want to see one of Zircon's and Darkesword's very first compositions to see what they had brewing up back in the days of Ramen Noodles, and Super Nintendos..

Anyways,
Anyone think this is a good idea?
Feel free to post up.

Edit:

Should this be moved to Community?

I'll show you the first original song I ever wrote, which was done entirely in FruityLoops using lots of presets and some bundled MIDI riffs. I did write some stuff myself, but I don't take credit for all of it.

My first remix, which was done using Magix Music Maker 7 deLuxe and LOTS of loops..

(Phantasy Star IV battle theme)

A few other early "gems";

(Castlevania "Vampire Killer")

Haha, what the heck, I'm jealous.. I wish I had your talent, my first tunes sound like garbage compared to yours. Still as amazing as ever, I bet you beatboxing tight tunes before you were even born.

Remix of the theme from the original PC Lemmings game. It's dirt simple, but I still think it sounds kinda nice :)

I was quite proud of it then. I should really revisit it and polish it up. With a bit of work it could be Thasauce worthy.

there was a thread like this, but it was years ago in a different section (wip?). anyway, when it comes to humble beginnings there's an old Kenyan proverb: Where there is no shame, there is no pride.

- The Flyin' Beat (http://apmatthe.ws/random/apm_beat.ogg) (1995)
Originally an .s3m tracker file, this is my first completed bit of music. Industrial bluesy synthrock? I think this is the only time I thought was cool to have a "drum solo" in a song.

- Mario Can't Sleep (http://apmatthe.ws/random/apm_smb2end.ogg) (2002)
First remix: Super Mario Bros. 2 ending. Instant rejection at OCR, but received some positive reviews at Vgmix I.

You'd think I would've gotten a lot better at music in 13 years...

My first remix was a zelda song.
I had about 3 newbish compositions (not remixes) before I worked on this.
Made it in one long long night on FL demo.
http://h1.ripway.com/max97230/995922-untitled.mp3

This one was also in my folder. I am almost positive I don't remember making this and I am wondering how it got there.
http://h1.ripway.com/max97230/76748-untitled.mp3

This was when I got a keyboard. JOY!! Too bad I am in college now and I can't place it in front of the computer. Next term break, I am going to try to rearrange everything so I can fit my keyboard in front of the monitors and screens. Right now, it's only good for practicing piano, not for mixing with.
http://h1.ripway.com/max97230/woohookeyboard.mp3

I am working on a dark world remix from the zelda game right now. It's pretty bad ass (I think lol). Has some power riffage on the guitar.

In 6th grade I was watching "The Wonder Years" and unknowingly influenced by Joe Cocker's rendition of 'With a Little Help from my Friends' I wrote with my clarinet a flute piece that went something like this:

Dan's First Piece (Re-enactment) (http://www.dannthr.com/samples/sketches/dans_first_song.mp3)

That's not exact and the sheet music is lost to the ages, but that's essentially the first song I ever wrote down. Before that it'd been you know... humming and singing to myself on the playground.

This is a work in progress 14 years later:
Memories of Flame and Smoke (http://www.dannthr.com/samples/sketches/memories/memories_of_flame_and_smoke.mp3)
(Still writing for flute ;) )

My first:

This was my very first completed project, made in FLStudio 4, back in 2004. It started out as a test to try a bunch of different styles in one. Without the direction this little thing gave me back then (primitive as it is), the stuff I make now would sound very different - check the link below my sig for a sample the most recent stuff I've done.

I've still never attempted to make or submit a remix, but I plan to before I finish the album I'm working on.

Why was this shot down? I don't claim to be as up on my stuff as yon judges, but I can't hear a whole lot that would merit 1-2-3 rejection. Sample quality was probably one sticking point, and it could stand to be about half as long as it is now. But both of those could probably be fixed relatively easily and this could be resubmitted.

Pez:
Those are very basic synths, the texture is not exactly the most professional. A lot of parts sound too bare, whilst others sound too cluttered. Though the arrangement isn't too bad, it's not awesome enough to excuse the lack of dynamic contrast and weak drums. Big sticking part is the repetition in the bassline.
Sadly, these are all the same issues I have when mixing.

My first friggin' sucked. It was an appallingly bad piece I wrote 2 to 4 years ago... You should still be willing to suffer through a minute and 15 seconds or whatever. I suggest listening to it using the fonts that come standard with Windows Media Player a couple years ago, because the it sounds even more hideously terrible in Winamp and Quicktime.

Oh and I use Finale 2007 for the music. It didn't cost too much since I didn't have to pay full due to their upgrading policy ^__^

What was your first remix or melody that you created, What program and equipment did you use? How long did it take you? I'm just interested to see were every one started and how each of your styles differ, and maybe hear a little about your background and what kind of Video game music your into.

I'm just starting the melody creating/ remixing myself, and i have a HUGE collection of video game music at my disposal its just a passion of mine and remixing and creating my own is what im thriving for!

Your responses and discussion would boost my enthusiasm for this hobby even further.

Hey, welcome and get nice and cozy here in the forums. If you're looking for us to "motivate" you by giving you how we got started, you're going to be here for a LOOOONG time. Learn the ropes a little, ask questions, get help in the WIP forums (which, despite me being around almost five years I've only just started to use ) and get to work!

First tip: If you respond to multiple posts, use that nice little multiple quote button on the bottom-right before you hit post-reply. It makes it easier to keep threads organized if you know you're responding to multiple posts :)

Okay, so, my first remix? I was just talking about it earlier today, actually. I didn't start here, I started at another site called VGMix. The first remix I ever did was of the Final Fantasy Tactics - Pub track, and I did it pretty....unconventionally. I had three acoustic guitars the whole song while having a bunch of my friends loop over environmental/foley sounds and conversations to make it sound like a mariachi band playing in a pub. I'll try to PM you later with a link if you want to have a listen. Note: people can progress very far quickly, so a lot of older work for a lot of people here may sound very different. But I guess if you're looking for stuff to aspire to, and seeing how everyone got their start, here's a good place to start.

PROTO·DOME

My first finished remix was a Tetris track made using Sibelius, exported as MIDI, put through Synthfont and then post edited in a sound editing program. This was just over a year ago now... Wow... Just read the old thread... Time certainly goes by quickly... I use FL now anyways.

It's difficult to actually say what my first ever mix was because a lot of mixes are experiments and never get anywhere, especially when starting out. I'm sure you're just after something to guage how good you are compared to everyone else before you start, but honestly, I found the best thing for me was to just post it on the WIP forums anyway. The criticism you get (and will inevitably get) there is extremely helpful.

The Coop

I started remixing back around the beginning of 2002. It was just me, Music Creator, and a free MP3 maker called CDex. The first song that I would call an actual remix (as opposed to just redoing the original song with "better" instruments), was Seiren's Destiny (http://two.xthost.info/thecoop/The_Coop_-_Thunder_Force_III_-_Seirens_Destiny.zip). I kept doing it up until around September of 2004, when I took a rather long hiatus from remixing, as I had begun to feel like I was wasting my time for various reasons.

These days, I don't do too many remixes. When I do, it's still just me, the same copy of Music Creator, and that same free MP3 maker. The last two remixes I did were Mari-O-Round (http://thecoop.110mb.com/music/The_Coop_-_Super_Mario_64_-_Mari-O-Round.zip), (a remix of the merry-go-round song from Mario 64) and A Few More Miles To Go (http://thecoop.110mb.com/music/The_Coop_-_Arcus_Odyssey_-_A_Few_More_Miles_To_Go.zip) (a remix of the ending theme from Arcus Odyssey), both of which were done last year.

Not sure how much growth the two periods show, but there it all is.

I think I started around four or five years ago when it took me 6 hours to do a MIDI that was 1:20 long.

I didn't start getting really serious about it until the start of last year.

Lots of time wasted, but hey, at least its actually paying off to some point and will likely pay off even more later.

This (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01407/) was my first attempt at a ReMix. I think I used FL Studio, some free drums (NS_Kit or something), Broomstick Bass VST, and NI's B4 VST. Recorded guitars in Cubase 2.X with a Line6 PODxt and did the mixing in Cubase as well. Still use FL and Cubase to this day.

First mix was a blend of Pollyanna from Mother/EarthBound Zero and the story theme from Yoshi's Island, made with modplug tracker.

It sucked.

First mix that didn't suck was a blend of Gathering Stars in the Night Sky from Xenogears and Desperado by the the Eagles. It was made with noteworthy composer, synthfont, audacity, and a lot of help from prizm and the prophet of mephisto.

Right now I use Sonar.

EDIT:This (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01407/) was my first attempt at a ReMix. (note that the word "this" is a link to a posted remix)

My first extensive attempt is a Terra mix that I'm still in the process of trying to get working so I can learn enough to do more songs at a higher level (and to repeat ad infinum). I'm working with Logic Pro - I have a Mac Pro, and I keep my recreational usage to another powerful desktop that I have so that the Mac Pro's power is almost exclusively for my music endeavors (as well as some work related stuff).

I haven't worked terribly hard on it so far to be honest. It's a bit disheartening to see that it takes many recordings to get somewhat into the swing of things. I'm largely criticizing myself for timing issues so far, but it seems like it takes a lot of practice & drive, so I'm going to have to man up and keep at it.

My first video game remix (and second production overall) was a remix of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zV-aKryNYN0&fmt=18) track. Actually, it wasn't exactly a remix, but more of an attempt to recreate the song by ear. This was back in 2003 and I was using FL Studio 4.x. (I can't remember the exact version.) I believe it took me a couple days to complete it. I was into making cheesy-sounding dance music back then. I don't have it anymore, but I'm sure Sadorf does. I'll provide a link if he has it.

In the very beginning I mostly made stuff with funny/stupid sounding vocalsamples with a 4/4 bassdrum on the background. Just messing around in Impulse Tracker and having a few laughs. That stuff was just supposed to sound stupid and had no real "musical effort" so I don't think it really counts as my very first songs.

One of the first songs where I really tried to create actual music instead of random madness would be this one : http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00145/. All the way back from 2000. OCR was quite different back then. Actually, kinda strange that this mix is still on this site. But we all have our history. Yay.

I'm 95% sure everything I used in there was from darkesword's soundfont page (http://soundfonts.darkesword.com/). So I had some nice sounds; I just didn't know how to work with them very well.

Not that I do now either.

This (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR00006/) WAS my very first VGM arrangement; production is fairly lacking since I think all the samples combined fit in like 3-4MB of space, but at the time it was exactly what I wanted: an orchestral version of the PSIII opening theme. I'm not even sure I knew commercial VGM arrange OSTs *existed* at the time, but I wanted that specific melody in a form I could control, with orchestral instrumentation, so that's what I set about creating. I had so much fun I decided to do Shinobi next, and that's pretty much the beginnings of this site, right there...

My first song was a dark and sexy waltz. I wrote it a little less than half a year ago.

I pride myself in writing very dark tunes, and in using uncommon modes. I tell people that this one is as joyous as my music ever gets.

I call it Seduction and the Snake (http://www.speedyshare.com/145843354.html).

While some parts aren't that great, I still love the hell out of the section of hydrocity with flamenco guitar, piano, and saxophone (complete with latin-style drums!). I may make a mix of hydrocity using this section as a base.

I made a little something in Electroplankton once using Audacity to record a couple parts over each other and move them around a bit.

http://ofadam.com/macroidtoe/dump/Holy%20Plankton%20Ocean%20Temple.mp3

Aaaaaaaaand that's the the full extent of my musical accomplishments. I guess I could pop in my old copy of Mario Paint and load up whatever's saved on it from 15 years ago. Probably just random notes thrown around in an indiscriminate manner. Which, based on the whole "Shakespeare, monkeys, typewriters" principle could in fact be a work of pure genius.

Technically, my first one was this FF7 remix (http://www.sephfire.com/music/internal_affliction.mp3) which was eventually accepted. It went through several versions before reaching it's current "sort of ok, but mostly awful" state, but I don't think I have any of the previous versions anymore.

So here's another terrible remix (http://www.sephfire.com/music/aeon.mp3) I made soon after.

Everyone keeps saying their first songs/remixes are terrible...but at least they made some musical sense (and in some cases, are actually pretty good). =D

When I first got into music production (way back in Fruity Loops 3, a tiny bit before I first found this site), I hadn't a clue what the hell I was doing. I wasn't aware of what keys were, what dissonance was, what clipping was... Nothing. I more or less had this program, and some presets, and thought it was the coolest thing ever.

So, here's the first "song" I ever did: http://content18.wuala.com/contents/phantomcactus/public/VOX_-_01_-_Chaotic_Airway.mp3 It's really not even a song, honestly. It's just presets and stuff I tossed together and thought it sounded cool. Please, for the love of all that is good in the world, make sure your speakers aren't up very high. It clips pretty badly, and overall is just a piece of junk. =P

Eventually, I found that you could import MIDI files into FL...and that's when I did my first "remix": http://content16.wuala.com/contents/phantomcactus/public/VOX_-_04_-_Musically_Enhanced_Mushrooms.mp3 It's pretty much just a MIDI rip with added presets and simple percussion. Again, really, really lame. XD

And from those "humble" beginnings... =P Actually, I don't think I've ever shown current work of mine to anyone here, so posting this was probably a terrible idea... Now you're all gonna think I'm retarded. =\

Meh, oh well. XD

EDIT: Oh, let me know if the links don't work. I signed up for Wuala just to post this stuff, since my website isn't up and working yet. If you're interested, it's gotten pretty good reviews (and compares favorably to other services according to Wikipedia), and so far I'm pretty happy with it. I think there's some way for me to get extra space or something if I have people sign up through a special link, but I can't be bothered to find it. =P But, PM me if you want a personal review of the service.

Ha, first remixes... I don't have my first midi remix, but I have something (http://www.box.net/shared/0a9on45cfo) that's at least close to my first (I think it was my second or third) - don't worry, it's terrible (I think I wrote that about eight years ago). My first VG remix on Reason (http://www.box.net/shared/tmtyr1b8so) isn't actually too bad, but I had no clue what production was, at that time, so there are a lot of issues with that. Funny, though, that I joined this site right when I finished this mix because I was planning on submitting it (don't worry, I couldn't figure out how to submit things, at the time - by the time I did I realized that this song sucked too much and scrapped that idea).

I've gotten better (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=24019&page=5) since then, though (I swear I'll get that popping yet - the mp3 compression screwed this song up a little bit). Funny my earliest and my latest Reason song are almost the exact same length.

OK... alright...

My first song ever (from July or August 2003) was called "Loose Leer (http://www.fileupyours.com/view/247586/loose_leer%28first%20song%20ever%29.mp3)" because that's what it sounded like to me. My first remix that was respectable enough to call a remix? Lost track of that, but here's something that's decent: Everlasting (http://www.fileupyours.com/view/247586/Everlasting.mp3) (year 2007/2008ish), a remix of Space Trip Steps (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uroFcDcj5OM), except with a key change + some of the instruments weren't that good.

I'm better than the above by far, but it's going to take me a while to pump out more when I'm in school.

Challenge: anyone wanna redo Loose Leer?

The Dark Beeper Peeper People (http://lukewilliams.org/storage/Ashamed%20Of%20Self%20-%20The%20Dark%20Beeper%20Peeper%20People.mp3)

I didn't use any kind of tracking... so all of the alignment of the cuts were made with simple math in Cool Edit (an old program like Audacity). The file claims to date back to Jan '03. Sounds about right.

EDIT: My first remix, like Nase, is from a PRC. 17: Marsupial Hero (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc17/Prc17_LAOS_-_Marsupial_Hero.mp3) a cover of the sparkster theme.

Disclamer: This was before I learned about the internet so I had no help whatsoever, just fl tutorials so there is a lot of clipping going on in these songs xD.

Alright well this song I'm gonna link you too directly is definitely one of my favorite 'gems' of the past that I created

I was thinking about starting a thread like this, but I couldn't find my very first remix from Sonic 3D Blast, called "Pannic Attack" (yes, with two n's). I named it that because of the panning effects I used, that sucked tremendously.

I recently redid my second remix and posted them both up in my WIP thread, (which can be found in my sig).

This might be alot to ask, but if anyone still has, or can locate my old mixes, I would love to get them from you. I will redo them all eventually.
