View Full Version : Classic NES games

I never had an NES growing up, since my parents were against video games for some stupid reason, so I've missed out on playing a lot of classic games. I'm on a bit of a retro kick right now and feel like playing the classics. Anyone have any recommendations of must-play games?

I'm going to avoid the common cliches of Mario, Castlevania and Metroid, and suggest you play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (Only play the first one if you're a masochist). It's a very cool Double Dragon-style beat 'em up, and I've had tons of fun playing this with friends. I remember it having some decent music and pretty nice graphics as well for the time, though my perception of it might have been blurred a bit by nostalgia.

Some other, less-cliched suggestions:
- Silver Surfer, if only for the music
- Battletoads, again, if you're a masochist

The old Mega Man games were brutal but fun. And the music was all bouncy and "beep-boop-booop-boooop" and stuff. The very definition of the Capcom style.

I've finished all the Mario games, both of the Zelda games, and all three Final Fantasy games. I've tried Battletoads, and have finished Ninja Turtles 2 (admittedly by using the konami code to get level select and 10 lives; I was the only one of my friends with fingers fast enough to enter the code when I was growing up, so I'd often play it at someone else's house).

Never tried any of the NES Megaman or Castlevania games or Metroid. I'll probably start with those. More suggestions welcome :)

Megaman 2
The Guardian Legend
Castlevania
Final Fantasy
Contra
Ninja Gaiden
Zanac
Clash at Demonhead
Super Mario Bros. 3 (I know this one seems obvious, but it's up there with my most played NES games ever.)
Destiny of an Emperor
Vice: Project Doom

Edit: Oh, and try out The Adventures of Bayou Billy if you're really looking for a challenge.

...the music was all bouncy and "beep-boop-booop-boooop" and stuff.

Now you are my new best friend.

Megaman 2 is my favorite for sure. Hey, remember that time I was playing it at Magfest 6 and I was too drunk to beat the dragon in Wily's first stage so D-Lux beat it for me?

All the popular good ones have been named, so I'll say

Crystalis
Shadowgate (this game still scares the hell out of me, I have had so many dreams about it)
Punch Out!
Goonies 2
Base Wars
Klax
Yoshi's Cookie
Batman: Return of the Joker
North & South
Ninja Gaiden
River City Ransom
I also really like the open music for Rambo. The gameplay is lacking finesse, though.

I've got to second Punch-Out!!, the Castevania games, Metroid, Mega Man games, and Ninja Gaiden games. Never played Punch-Out!! till it came out for the VC, and it's been awesome.

Alright, I'm going to name some odd ones:

Uninvited
Shadowgate

Deja Vu did not impress me so much. But those two are fun. A little annoying with a controller because you're always "clicking" on options, but whatever... I still like them.

Of course my classics would be Mario 1-3, Zelda 1-2, Metroid, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy.

A lot has already been mentioned, so I'll go with a somewhat obscure title that was a favorite of mine back in the day--Nightshade.
http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/nes/nightsh.htm

It's one of the few graphic adventures on the NES and it has this neat noir-spoof vibe that's really pretty funny. Definitely worth checking out.

I'm almost surprised that this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Shatterhand is a wonderful game. Maybe it's got a special nostalgic value to me, but I fired it up again a couple of days ago and still think it's as awesome as I did back when I was 9. And the music, ooh. I want to remix some of the tracks.

Least100Seraphs

Ok, a lot's already been said... but hey, if 5 people name the same game, it's gotta be good, right?

Anyways...

River City Ransom is a must if you have a friend. This game is awesome.

Metroid and Zelda are typical suggestions, but I say forget the first Zelda since its SNES sequel is infinity times awesomer. Instead, play Zelda 2: Adventure of Link.

Rescue: The Embassy Mission(s) is incredibly awesome, as long as you can manage to abseil down the building without dying too much. Music is tops, also. One of the few NES games I'd really like to own, that I don't own.

Joy Mech Fight is a great 2D fighter that puts many SNES StreetFighter clones to shame. It's a Japan only release, but I do believe translation patches are out there.

Can't think of too much else at the moment, but I was trying to name some games that either aren't well known, or are overlooked for others in the series.

I'm not sure why 80% of the people recommending CV1 are not also recommending CV3. I've always found it to be superior on all levels.
Though both are excellent.

Startropics! (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14100)

Ha, beat to the punch. Of course it's foremost on my mind, since I'm playing through it right now.

Hmm... let's see. If you're playing through these games via emulation or the Virtual Console, rather than an actual NES, then I'm a big Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels fan. But that's only if you've played the original SMB enough that the final world in that game seems easy to you. The Lost Levels will make you tear your hair out unless you're pretty skilled at platforming games.

(Haha, or I could recommend Cat Mario (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13870)...)

Alright. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 or 3 (NOT THE ORIGINAL SWEET JESUS IT IS TERRIBLE) will do you nicely, particularly if you have a friend to play co-op with you. One day I'd like to see the Virtual Console support arcade games, because I want to play TMNT The Arcade Game in its original 4-player glory in my living room one day. But that's not NES so whatever!

Dragon Warrior took up a lot of my time as a kid, but that was before I knew what a good RPG was like, so I can't really recommend it nowadays. Lots of grinding, and not much of a story. I think the original Final Fantasy isn't a bad choice, although next to modern RPGs you may still find it wanting.

OH! Play EARTHBOUND ZERO (aka Mother 1). There is the official unreleased translation out there in the internets if you look hard enough. Until the endgame, where the enemy difficulty admittedly gets rather unbalanced, it's a pretty polished RPG for the time, and has a lot of the fun and quirkiness that makes Earthbound (for SNES) so endearing to us all.

Hope that all helps.

Some of my favorites that don't really get enough love are (in order from great to not as great):

Shatterhand
Ice Hockey
Legendary Wings
Commando (needs some remixes)
Life Force
Elevator Action (classic)
Spyhunter (classic)
Lolo (simple but addictive puzzle game)
Bad News Baseball (Tom and his .400 batting average = WIN)
Total Recall (still haven’t completed it myself)
Ultimate Stuntman
Caveman Games (best played with a friend, but awesome on your own too!!)
California Games (same as caveman games, with a SoCal flavor)
Beetlejuice (better than first impressions might lead you to believe)

Solar Jetman

THIS, THIS, VERY MUCH THIS!!!11

Oh god the memories, the nightmares I had from this game! Doing your best to tow that fuel cell to your mothership, while your own fuel is running low, you're getting shot at from all sides, and even gravity is pulling you down to your demise, is one of the most nerve-wrecking experiences you can have on your NES.

I always thought the box-art was extremely cool. Turns out it had a bit of a Megaman-vibe going on with all the surreal imagery. Not so awesome anymore :D

In retrospect it was actually pretty amazing! You could do all kinds of fancy stuff like upgrading your craft, buying new ships, lots of different weapons, and it had great (albeit very hard) gameplay. I should emulate it some time :D

Oh I just searched for an image of the boxart and put it up on a mirror. I honestly could care less what site it comes from, especially whether it's a 'good' or a 'bad' gaming site, since keeping track of gaming sites is the pinnacle of nerdiness IMO.

Although, if you have a powerpad, you should totally pull that out.

To get the whole "NES experience", you must play a few required games:

-Super Mario Bros, to completion.
-Zelda, moderately.
-Metroid, moderately.
-Double Dragon and Double Dragon II, as frustrating as they are, are required.
-River City Ransom, at least get to the high school.
-Contra, to completion (30 lives code).
-R.C. Pro-Am, at least get to the trucks level.
-Bubble Bobble, lightly.
-Castlevania, try to beat it.
-Metal Gear, moderately.

Despite what you may think, you don't need to play Final Fantasy. The game was so far ahead of its time that it really doesn't fit in with the retro "NES" experience. Same goes for Dragon Warrior.

A few other highly-recommended titles to polish off:

-Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle.
-Stinger.
-Life Force (same 30-lives code as Contra).
-Goonies II, try to complete it.
-Super Mario Bros 2.

Try to spend a good solid 2-3 hrs on each of these games. I don't think I'm missing anything else you absolutely need.

Oh yeah, Excitebike was a lot of good fun back in the day...making courses etc. I'm curious how that stood the test of time.

Gamelore, I think your list discounts the value offered by Punch-Out!!, and I find the omission of Super Mario Bros 3 strange. I also think Mega Man should be represented in any "NES Experience" list.

A lot of good stuff already mentioned, but stay away from Total Recall!

Anyway, I'll try to only bring up stuff that hasn't been...

-Ice Hockey. Play it with a friend! Even if you don't like hockey, it's a blast.

-Batman Return of the Joker. Suprisingly good graphics with large characters for an NES game and a decent side scrawler.

-Battletoads and Double Dragon. If you want a Battletoads game you can actually beat!

-Battle of Olympus. Kind of similar to Zelda II. Might be a bit difficult by today's standards. Neat music too.

-Bionic Commando. 'Nuff said.

-Crystallis. It's already been mentioned, but it's worth repeating again.

-G.I. Joe 1 + 2. Ain't half bad. Had more fun with 1 though.

-Ikari Warriors 1 + 2. A,B,B,A!

-Jackal. Kind of like Commando except with Jeeps and supports two players.

-Maniac Mansion. Awesome game from LucasArts. The archaic controls by today's standards might be a bit taxing though.

-Skate or Die 2. Worth it for the opening movie alone.

-Super C. Don't remember if anyone mentioned this yet, but it's Contra 2. 30 Lives code DOESN'T WORK for this.

-Spy Hunter. But only if you remember it.

-Strider. Doesn't know how well this holds up, though. Maybe not too well, but I used to love it.

Agreeing that that the music in Silver Surfer is pretty interesting as well. The game, not really.

Worth a first mention:
- Gradius (how'd you guys miss THE space shooter! yea Lifeforce is pretty insane tho..)
- Super Dodge Ball (dodge ball with super moves. incredible.)
- Faxanadu (Rpgish side scrolling. weapons armor magic. delicious.)
- Excitebike (very early game that had build-your-own levels! get a friend ;D )
- Legacy of the Wizard (find a walkthru and beat this game. you will feel gratification beyond your dreams)
- Puzznic (awesome puzzle game)
- Lolo 1,2,3 (if you like puzzles)
- Solomon's Key (like action-puzzling. ...fireball!! SKEE-ERT!)
- Jaws (yea, the movie. fun fun fun!)
- Gauntlet (yea they've made much better gauntlets than this, but you can't call yourself an NES afficionado if you haven't played the original)
- Strider (that sword slash is infectious.. especially after you learn to wall jump)
- Bomberman (remote bombs anyone?)
- Cobra Triangle (Boat game. Hard. You probably wont like it unless you become good at it)
- Iron Tank (very hard tank game. run over infantry to gain health?...who knows why :1
- Fester's Quest (anyone remember this one? ;]
- Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (eerie, eerie game. no, its not a 2 player fighting game)
- TMNT anyone? it's f**kin pizza time.

Worth a second and third mention:
- Blaster Master (possibly the best game for the NES. you're missing out on one hell of a fun game if you don't at least make it to level 7.. wall walking!)
- Guardian Legend (damn close second place)
- Bionic Commando (completely original gameplay)
- River City Ransom (play it. play it now. stop reading and go play.)
- Metal Storm (mechs. yea.)
- Zanac (Space shooting done right)
- Castlevania 2, sorry 1 & 3, you don't do it for me

- Legacy of the Wizard (find a walkthru and beat this game. you will feel gratification beyond your dreams)

Why did it take me five pages to find just one mention of this game?! Shame on the bunch of you.

I've never defined myself as an old school gamer, but I put more time into these games and SNES games even today.

Oh yeah, if you can, beat Legacy of the Wizard without a walkthrough. I did it... after over 10 years. The feeling of success afterwards is incredible though. Just take the tip that each crown/section is meant to be done by each character, once you follow that and get basic item and area recognition, you'll find it... possible.

I wish I could say the same. I came damn close tho. Back before gamefaqs, or even .com's at all - the Nintendo Power years - many-a-nights I spent exploring this unique game. But I'm older now and I just don't have the patience to learn the old games anymore. I find more satisfaction in just beating them as fast or thoroughly as possible, with hint sheets ><. But hell, if you're not already tainted by todays A.D.D. video games, by all means, this is/was definitely a game to throw a nice chunk of your life into.

Legacy of the Wizard is not a classic game. I love it. I remember my Dad renting it for me when my tonsils were ripped out, drooling on the floor with a gallon of ice cream wondering what the hell to do.

It's got cool music, it's weird, it's got that fun 'collect and explore' gameplay, but it is not a classic game. It is an oddball that you have to love.

I'm actually really surprised that this one was not mentioned. It may not be considered a very good game, but it definitely is a classic....

Anyone remember PaperBoy? I think that was one of the games that the nes came with for a while... Not sure though. I spent a decent amount of my life just playing that game, and never finishing it. Pretty hard game for me when I was 8 or so. I don't know if I will ever go back though.

Paperboy is still brutal as hell. It's weird too. All in all a great game and I'd like to see it on virtual console.

I love that you just have to survive till next week to beat the game, then you retire in glory.

Also fuck the tornadoes

Did you have to complete certain sections before others? I own Legacy, and remain thoroughly confused by it (though running around blind is a great time -- the platforming is solid, and the music rocks).

Yes you do. Just from memory.
Take the daughter and go fetch the gloves. That's like top level, very short, out of the giant fish made of blocks. Then go back for the Dad as you complete his section first. Or at least running off w/ the dad is what I would do instinctively. If you think of the labyrinth going off into 4 different sections from the dragon, one for each character(Dad, Mom, Daughter, and Family Pet. The son is a wuss and doesn't do any work until the end). I'm pretty sure the dad's to the left and up. Although you may also do the family pet's one at any time, and his is also likely completable by other characters(you can do a spike-walk) but remember that the crown bosses get progressively harder.

If you are persistent that should get you through the game. Each next step you should feel pretty confident in your characters block moving and mobility items.

Kirby's Adventure, possibly the best NES game ever, and thats not nostalgia biased. That was the first game I ever beat, but it wasn't till about 2 years ago that I went though and got 100% on a file.

Awesome game, along with everything else thats been mentioned. Marble Madness, and Mega Man 5, get mentions because of their awesome.

few obscure ones that people may have mentioned.

California Games
Rescue (bad ass music)
North and South -better with a friend to play with. Hijacking trains FTW
Deja Vu
Solstice - hard as hell isometric platformer, still haven't beat that damn game
Super Spike Volleyball - again, fun with friends. Was awesome way back in the day with 4 players.
Whomp 'Em - Think Megaman but with Indians and spirit monsters...
Cowboy Kid - Sort of like an earlier Sunset Riders

I actually remixed the song when you're getting to your sniper spots. It's been sitting in my WIP folder for years now. Maybe if everyone claps their hands, I'll work on it again.

My personal NES favorite is River City Ransom. Lifeforce is also up there.

Both of these have been sitting in my WIP folder with Rescue, as well.

I was just thinking about the awesomeness that is Super Dodge Ball. Gotta give that one a try. That one's got nostalgia written all over it for me. The music is also really good if I remember correctly.
