Wow, I don't see any thread about this amazing game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JROWtJgdHkY

You select any song on your hard drive, and it creates a stage for you, and you collect colored blocks in turn with the beats.

http://www.audio-surf.com/ - Official Website, can explain better than I can.

Unfortunately, the Beta Weekend just ended, but some anonymous people have found ways to continue playing it...PM me if interested.

It certainly looks interesting, but I'm having a hard time from the YouTube video seeing the correspondence between the beats and the block collection... anyone else? Just me?

While the game looks cool I also don't see how the blocks are generated depending on the music.

Definately a case of some songs better than others.

Techno/electronic songs have better block-beat correlation.

Most rock is kinda bad about block-beat correlation, although oddly enough Dragonforce - Through the Fire and the Flames is pretty decent :P

Also, stages rise/dip relating to the music.

That video doesn't do it justice, it was just one of the first ones I could find.

Artist whose music make awesome stages: Kanye West, BT, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (their newer stuff moreso).

Also Voices of the Lifesteam is pretty trippy experience.

I just tried it out.
Like others in this thread have pointed out, the timing of the blocks didn't always correspond with the music. There were certain sections of songs that I tried that lined up significantly better than what's shown in the youtube video. At times, it was like the in-game sound effects were like an extra percussion track, but it usually it only lasted for a few seconds at a time.

It did a fairly good job determining the movement of the 'road', though. I tried this remix (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01492/), and when I hit the section at 3:40, it was like a frickin' roller coaster.

I played this for about 4 hours yeasterday. To me, the best tracks are really long anthemic trance. Lots of variety, and its easy enough to keep up. For pure points, nothing beats fast rock though. Think like 1 solid minute of red blocks.

You really don't know how fun it is until you play it.

The blocks correspond to an interesting rhythm that goes with the song. At least, this is how it works in mono ninja (one color + grey). Zircon's stuff is pretty good in here. Antigravity was great, and I just love Without Regret. dj Taka is freaking nuts in this game.

Slightly slower and less complex songs make the blocks and waves line up almost perfectly with the music. You just have to experiment until you get it to work well.

This game is pretty awesome and fun. No, the block correlation isn't perfect, but it does exactly what I always wanted Frequency/Amplitude to do, which is allow the play of your own music.

Which, might I add, lends a very potent dimension of gameplay almost tailor-made for THIS VERY SITE.

I mean, we can have high-score tabs for each OCRemix! I actually played Planetskill's Oil and Water mix, and there were already another two scores on the board for that song!

THAT prospect is more exciting to me than the game itself.

Anyone else having an incredibly hard time posting scores? It's horrible, if I'm logged out I can see the high scores and I'll usually have competitive placement. So I hit the 'post score' button and then it offers to log me in. I log in... and suddenly, according to the game, nobody's played the song and I can't post my score.

Bought this last week only to forget about it completely, until I remembered last night and had a go at it. By golly, best 10 bucks I ever spent. It's trippy, challenging, and hella addictive, even if some songs don't work as well as others.

One of my fav songs to use so far: Music Instructor - Hymn

Wow! I just purchased this game on steam at the recommendation of this thread, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. It is amazingly fun, and on certain songs it just really *works*

Secret of Mana - Thicket OC ReMix was the first song I played. It blows my mind. I almost just wanna download Fraps so I can show you guys how cool it is, and how amazingly well synched to the music.

So, any recommendations on some other mixes it might be fun with? I'll try mine out, see how it works.

Haha, hey LuisX I see your name all over the place when I'm playing, was wondering who you were. Not many other people play OCRemixes :\. I pretty much play eraser with a sprinkling of ninja mono.

Awesome songs I've enjoyed so far (without looking through my playlist):
FFMusicDJ - Ahead on our rave
Zircon/Sixto - Lunatic Moon
HousetheGrate - Walk on Water and La Hora es Tarde
Snappleman - Dead Batteries and Malicious Fingers
Snappleman/Braincells - Scrambled Eggman
Norg - Iron Spire/Zeboimite Ascension
In fact anything by Snappleman or Norg
JAXX - Lightning Star
Analoq - Sierra Navada-Tan
Rayza - Rolling Start
A bunch of stuff from Jivemaster (althought I can't recall which I played right now)

There's definitely a ton more, and so much more I have to go through.

Ok, so I haven't logged into this site for a long time but I just had to come back by when I saw there were a lot of people playing the same songs I was. Most notable are the Turtles in Time Sewer Surfing tracks(there's like three different mixes of that one song).

I've been playing the game non-stop for the past couple of days. I don't really pay attention to the timing of the blocks. Sometimes they sync up and it's cool but for the rest I just try to nab as many as I can.

I've already managed to grab a couple of top scores(Metallica: Of Wolf and Man; how did I ever manage that?). Of course on the most popular songs I'm just lucky to place in the top ten.

Anyways I use the same name in the game so if you see me on there...well, that's me.

Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak
Venetian Snares - Szamar Madar

BTW my hat's off to ya if you ever manage to stealth Full Frontal Assault in iron/elite mode. I tried it and from where I sit you have to be a friggin' robot to pull that off and even then I'm not so sure. I did however manage to beat my own record in iron/pro mode. And what's better is I got it on video! You'll have to forgive the audio because I had to edit the music back in in windows movie maker because the recording sounded like crap. Stupid Realtek drivers.

I'm sure someone could beat that record if they manage to get the two or three blocks I missed. Well not counting the last three but if you grab those you don't get the clean medal. To be honest I wasn't sure I could stealth that one again but I somehow pulled it off.

Starting today, Remod will be hosting weekly challenges in Audiosurf. The basic premise is that some of us will be posting songs for everyone to play. We'll also determine a mode of the week. Highest combined score wins for the week. Check out the link in my sig. It oughta be fun.

If you'd rather not join us I suppose we could start it here, too.

This week: Ninja Mono (tends to be the most popular...I personally don't prefer it)

My song:
SoundTeMP - Supercooled Girl (http://home.comcast.net/~eternalzero/Supercooled%20Girl.mp3)

If you don't want to adhere to the mode/challenge, that's just fine. This is mostly my attempt at making it easier for us to play the same songs and give that sense of playing a game with other people. I know the community size is much larger here so don't everyone go posting songs but maybe a select few and then each week's top five will determine the next week's selection. And the mode will just rotate through all of the elite settings. But for the non-elite just play the pro or casual variants.

Yeah, but you can only do it for your highest score. The competition was with Ninja Mono and I screenshotted the score, but I have a higher score with a different ship that isn't for the competition : )

I don't believe Ironmode offers a higher score at all. The tooltip for it says 'merely for bragging rights and a challenge'. I THINK the ironmode offers a different track than the non-ironmode for each song so there's a possibility for more points, or not. But the point values for combos and per block is the same. The real difference in ninja mono is that in ironmode, you can't use the fins or the clearing button.

But yeah, I'll give up for this competition! : ) Ninja mono is too high stakes for me to want to go through it again, lol!

So. Come on. You've probably all bought it or obtained it through illicit means by now. That means we need a thread to post about crappy video game music that we think creates good tracks.

Or just crappy real music if you prefer. I'm game.

Ice Cap is pretty hectic. As in the original Ice Cap from the game, not one of the thousand remixes of it. It's not that fast. but there are GREY BLOCKS EVERYWHERE. I mean, if you're playing as Ninja Mono there are grey blocks everywhere. If you're one of those mutant freaks with the superhuman mental coordination you need to use one of the other elite characters effectively then I suppose there would not be.

It seems to me that when a track has a lot of steep dips it tends to be more forgiving with the number of blocks, because it's a lot harder to see them coming. Supporters?

Quartet SummerTrance OCReMix. Seriously. That's gotta be about the most loaded track I've found so far.

EDIT: Top Gear "Las Vegas." Don't believe me?

SoundTeMP - Supercooled Girl: Double Vision Elite

Nowhere near my best run but the only one I have on video. I've been trying to get a new high score for me (which would be the new global #1) on video, but it's too difficult. Fraps lowers my frame rate, forces me to play on a much lower resolution, and tends to "skip" which really screws me over.

Current top global score. Still a bad run due to regular fraps issues. This one had an extra bonus that screwed me over! Limit of file size on .avi is 4GB so this had to be split into two avi files while recording which made a huge spike in the middle of the song! Yay! (Not really, it pissed me off so much.)

Anything by Rush seems to work really well, I've tried Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer, and YYZ; they are all pretty sweet.

Also, I usually play Mono mode but techno songs like Sandstorm get way more "available" points in Mono versus other songs, does anyone know how the "traffic congestion" is calculated?

If you look at a song's equalizer bars as it is playing you tend to notice spikes in different frequencies. I think this has something to do with determining when you get blocks.

Yes I noticed. I'm afraid I had the setting on low when I recorded and it's not exactly easy to replicate runs like those. Maybe this one will be better. Please tell me if it isn't, I'm still trying to find just the right setting for this game.

I took a little time out to do some ninja-monoing! Both of these are ironmode and stealth! One is Pendulum's 'Granite' and one is Dragonforce's 'Through the Fire and Flames'.

Next I'm trying to stealth bLind's Zelda 2 Temple Trance. Friggin' thing has 343 traffic.

Few tips here that might improve your playing performance:

- Assuming you're using the mouse, move your arm and not your wrist. The game is a lot more receptive if the mouse is moved in a perfectly straight line. I've found that, quite often, the slight curve introduced by moving the mouse from left to right with your wrist alone causes the ship to "grind", which can really screw you over when you need to make a split-second sweep from the far left to the far right.

- Turn down the graphics. Yes, I know the game is very pretty on the Premium setting, but unless you're on a really good computer it's probably going to strain it a bit, and even the slightest instant of slowdown can mean the difference between a 30% bonus at the end of the track and nothing. This, of course, doesn't apply if you're just playing more for the experience rather than for getting a high score.

- The eye tends to take notice of the blocks only once they get within a certain distance. You need to try to overcome this and look ahead as well as directly in front of you, because if you don't then you'll end up getting overwhelmed by a sudden onslaught of blocks that you weren't expecting. Reflexes can only take you so far.

Those worked for me, anyway. I'm not sucking quite so badly now!

Finally, a video I've made that's relevant to the site!

Here's bLiNd's Zelda 2 Temple Trance, stealthed at 343 congestion.

Even if you have a really good computer, turn them down anyways. Dual 8800GT's and I still run standard simply because the less complex the game is, the faster it runs and the less laggy my FRAPS recordings are.

One other tip, if you're playing casual mono, go ahead and turn on ironmode. It's easier. I'm not kidding, taking away the shoulder lanes allows you to make fast moves without overshooting and ending up in a shoulder lane.

Does anyone here play with a 360 controller? I've found that I'm better with that than the mouse for some reason.

I love this game, and goes well with most of my latest tracks which have been electro-ish.

Since my comp. is having problems right now, it probably can't run Audiosurf, so I'm stuck playing OCR mixes on Beats for PSP, same very basic concept, different style though.

It'd need to be having some serious problems; I've seldom seen a game that was so good have such simple specs.

Heh, I got an email just then telling me I'd lost the #1 position for one of the songs. If I wasn't busy rebuilding my parents computer, I'd be trying to beat it now :P

I picked up Audiosurf today and I'm having a lot of fun with it, though I'm still only playing on Casual. It's a great experience and was totally worth the money. It's so simple it's addicting.

For the record, some of the music from like, Mega Man games are really fun to play on this. The ZX games in particular tend to be quite fun to play on because of their fast paced nature.

Nah, it happens sometimes. And this is one of those times that we're all glad he's had a change of heart because AudioSurf is a really fun and addictive game. I don't play on Elite yet, mostly casual and Pro. And I suck at the Pointman system still, even if it's where the meat of the game really is.
