The same developers behind the next-gen Bionic Commando are also doing a faithful update to the NES version, with the same 2D perspective and a few new things like multiplayer co-op. It will be downloadable from XBLA and PSN. There's a streamable video in the article.

This is why a 360 looks more appealing to me by the day (especially since SSBM got delayed...again). Holy cow, that's amazing.

All Your Base Belong to 2.5D? Possible. Someone set us up the download.
Meanwhile, this looks like it could be a tasteful download. Although, with it being a NEs original title, it's a wonder they haven't made a version for the Wii as well. Real shame.

2.5D is the new 3D.
And this is yet another ame that is pushing me over the edge to get my hands on one of those unreliable piece of hardware called xbox360. Bionic commando for NES ranks high as one of my favorite games of all time, still play it regularily, and this looks like SEX.

Off topic:Why?
On topic: The game is coming out for the PS3 too (It said PS3 at the end of the trailer);
Nobody mentioned it either because nobody noticed or because nobody cared, but still Yay!

360 being unreliable... What is this, 2006?
But wow. The bunch of Americans getting into the old game is really something. It reminds me of the dedication the Metroid Prime team had for the source material.
The "nerd" comment had be blurting out laugher. Great redone music as well. Now I'm going to play the ROM.

The dev team is Swedish.
Something that wasn't mentioned is that the co-op mode will only work offline, which is a bummer.

You're right. But it's really strange seeing that anyone other than the Japanese seems to genuinely care about those oldies than the Japanese themselves. And most of the time, they do the more than enough justice. It's strange to see them use the full potential of the 360/PS3 for a 2D oldie remake, but that game really does look gorgeous.

Seems to be a fantastic game. I hope they don't make new areas and stuff because I want it to be almost exactly as the NES game, but upgraded graphics.
I'm sure you won't get the same feeling while playing it but it looks very good by now.

Contra 4? ;)
Yeah I'm quite stoked for this, even though I won't be owning it any time soon. I've been quite skeptical of some 2.5d remakes. The new rondo of blood, the chibi-ish mega man remake, and even new super mario brothers didn't sit well with me. Nothing about the switch to using 3d graphics seemed like an improvement or desirable in any way... not to me at least.
But whatever it is they're doing better for Bionic Commando Rearmed, I think they've won me over.

Looks like the NUTS. It seems like the levels and gameplay could be significantly different too, based on the new bosses and weapons. If only I owned something this was coming out for...

Actually it makes no difference about the D-Pad.
I don't even use the D-Pad on the 360 controller. No need to. Works just fine.

Holy cow, yes. This is amazing -- the only problem is that the 360 version doesn't have netplay. That's overlookable though...considering that this IMO the best remake of all-time, and is one of the best XBLA titles available right now. The challenge rooms give the game much more replay value than Braid, which I loved...but won't go back and play it again for a long time.
The best part is that they didn't screw up the controls -- it is the tightest control I've seen from a game in a while.

I find it funny that some challenge rooms are so difficult, the best anyone can really come up with is 1%, 2% or at the highest, 6% completion rate.
I think it's room 16 or something, but after SIXTY tries, I finally finished. And ranked decently high.
Bionic Commando always was a pretty difficult game. Way more so than usual because of the swing mechanics which innately made them difficult. Now in Rearmed, enemies are much smarter, they even hunt you down to a point, and they take cover (what is this, an FPS game?).
I'm glad the game is actually more hardcore than I remember it. But also, this game is quite difficult as well. I enjoy the challenge, but I wonder how total newbies would feel.

It's been easily over 12 years since the last time I played Bionic Commando on the NES, but Rearmed feels like a faithful update. I was never particularly good at the original, and this game is still as tough as I remember. Great look and feel. The music is also pretty awesome.
The only things I have to gripe about offhand are related to the controls. Sometimes when shooting the grapple without pressing a direction it will shoot straight and other times it will shoot at a 45 degree angle. It's also extremely picky with the analog stick to shoot at that diagonal, whereas with the d-pad not so much...makes it far less worthwhile playing with the analog stick IMO.
Now all my home console playing time is going to be divided between this and Pixeljunk Monsters. Hooray for these great digitally-distributed games!

I (MasterTenor) am #1 on the BCR leaderboards for total challenge time. The only one I haven't finished yet is Final Exam (and of course, the stupid secret ones).
Time I'm proudest of so far: Under 27 seconds on Forked Path, and I'll have under 25 after I add one more trick.
If anyone needs advice, feel free to ask! :p
EDIT: Final exam is completed -- yippie! I'm the 4th person to finish it.

Both games are awesome and you're weird?
Bionic Commando is like an oldschool NES game which it mostly is. And Braid basically is something like Ico. More of an experience and a series of puzzle than an action/adventure title.

I guess the main thing about braid is the price.
I am mildly interested in the story, but at the same time; I can't quite justify paying that much for it. I do like the concept though, and will likely buy it eventually.
And Bionic Commando; It just didn't impress me. Looks great, and plays alright; but I just wasn't captivated enough to buy it I guess.

So apparently it wont be coming out on Steam for us PC gaming types...Somewhere in the negotiating with Capcom and Valve there was a disagreement, and it's available on the Capcom store website and using another digital download service called like Direct2Download or something. If it was available on Steam my wallet would be out already, but I'm a little hesitant about getting it otherwise from what I've heard people say about D2D.
Any of you guys bought it yet for PC, and if so, how?
Sir_NutS
08-21-2008, 12:51 PM
Bought it yesterday.
As some may know, I'm a big fan of the NES BC. And this remake is a dream come true for me. Worth every penny. I'm loving every aspect of it and I love that capcom decided not to just remake it by changing sprites and the like, but to make a game from the ground up for current consoles/pc, and make it to feel exactly like the original.
I'll be playing this for years to come, just like the NES BC. Now if nintendo did something similar with Kid Icarus, I could die happy.
EDIT: Spork, I bought it off D2D. No steam download sucks, but D2D wasn't too bad. You create an account, buy the game (I used paypal), and you get the authentication code and a download link. I had to download the fileplanet downloader to get the full dl speed though, and it was the only thing I didn't like about the process. Aside from that, it was very clean and easy.

Yea I dug around and got it with GamersGate, but found a way to extract the install file for the game so I dont have to run the GamersGate service every time I want to install it somewhere else. Of course, it wont let me run it on multiple computers unless I uninstall it off of this one, but still works.
And, although I missed out on the original BC, I must say that this game is challenging, entertaining, cheesey (just enough to be grand), and all around fun. Definitely dont regret getting it.

The original game has about the same kind of challenge, except the bosses were a total nonfactor. Now it presents real problems, and I think it's best that way.
Also, they totally turned Rad Spencer into Duke Nukem.

Yeah kinda sucks that they turned him into a softcore cocky version of Duke, cuz in my mind the original commando was kind of a quirky guy, with that hairdo and glasses. But I think it fits with the art style more (which reminds me a lot of Metal slug and snk games, and It's probably because the snk staff that works at capcom now did the art), and the over the top nature of the remake.
Anyways, this game is awesome, and whether you played the original or not, whether you're a fan of retro gaming or not, I think you should give it a try and also support Capcom for doing this. Capcom has shown lately to care about what their fans want, and to give them exactly that. Can't wait to play mm9, the new BC and Street Fighter 4.

I'm a bit late on the boat here (okay, WAY LATE), but I bought this the other day once I took my PS3 home from college (where their stupid network security isn't cmpatible with consoles and their wifi reception is so dire it's not even worth trying to bridge a connection) and I bought this at a bargain €10.
All I can say is wow. I never played the original on a NES, but did look into it a fair bit and got emulators and stuff, and it's nothing short of outstanding. It's probably the best downloadable game on the PlayStation Network, even if it's a tad easier than the original game imo. It's just a shame that the multiplayer isn't online at all, local only.
I really can't wait until the "main" Bionic Commando sequel comes out now. Hopefully it won't be too long before that happens.
