I've seen quite a few of them. They leave me thinking more so than action movies or dramas.

Discuss.

Oh man, I watched that for the first time just two nights ago! It was amazing. O_O and I wanna read that book too!

(Check out the album The Tangent Universe by Mood Deluxe; psychedelic breaks with some obvious Darko influences =P)

There's an indie film called "The Stratosphere Girl" that I really enjoyed. I'd highly recommend it if you can get your hands on it. It's about this girl who randomly packs up and goes to Japan. She starts to investigate this "mystery" and illustrates it in the form of comics. The thing is, you're never quite sure if what you're seeing on screen is "reality" or the main character's over-active imagination filling in the blanks. The whole movie has this calm, yet disturbing tone.

Cube.

Aside from questonable math, it's a scary scenario. The sequel is asinine, but #1 is great!

I kind of liked Cube Zero better then Cube, if only because it made a little more sense. I don't care who you are, I doubt anyone would come to the conclusion that math girl did in "figuring the traps out". Although I will say Hypercube sucked some sort of fatty rectum.

Also, the original Saw is great.

Memento is my favorite movie and its a great film noir style psychological thriller. Insomnia is excellent as well. I too prefer drama type movies over senseless action movies.

Se7en and Mr. Brooks are two great movies that fall in that category.

I still gotta get Se7en in my movie collection.

Cube - good plot, scary scenario.
Hypercube - fatty rectum^5
Cube Zero - can't agree with Skryp before I've seen it

Hmm, how about Jacob's Ladder?

Or Pi, or The Machinist?

Ahh, good times...good times. Really, they're all great, strange and interesting movies.

Hmm...well there is that movie "Open Your Eyes". Besides seeing Penelope Cruz topless, it was a delight to watch considering it made me think afterwards. Has anybody seen it? It confused me >_<

Gone Baby Gone (which came out on DVD recently). Guaranteed to make you go WTF? and also guaranteed to leave you thinking at the end, one way or another.

Yes, psychological thrillers are often great. I've seen almost every movie recommended so far, and almost every movie recommended so far is awesome. In addition I highly recommend Primer and Collateral .

I'd also like to specifically second Being John Malkovich (especially), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Donnie Darko, and Cube, Saw (only the original) and Memento.

I really need to watch Pi, I have it, I just have to get to it. The Machinist was decent, but I preferred Fight Club, and The Machinist seemed like a Fight Club rip-off, so I'd recommend Fight Club instead. Once you've seen one, you the other will be completely predictable.

I remember seeing Pi years ago, and it giving my brain a good fucking, but I can't remember anything about it except it being about a wall street equation and a drill.

Either way I couldn't sleep well for about a week after it, so yay.

Dark City.

Just try not to get too outraged at the Matrix while watching it.

Dark City is pretty neat. Do watch.

Most everything else I can think of has been said already.

Yeah, I was going to say Dark City as well, but I wasn't sure if that'd count since it had a little of everything. Also Twelve Monkeys.

Second on Fight Club, and whatever number placement for Donnie Darko.

"Why are you wearing that bunny suit?"

"Why are you wearing that man suit?"

Donnie Darko is the first example I can think of that doesn't use what I call the "time changing circle theory". Anyone know what I'm talking about?

You mean, how time didn't loop? I can think of plenty of examples that didn't have that -- maybe you should figure out the correct time travel terminology. BTW Donnie Darko used a form of Parallel Universe Theory, in case you didn't catch it.

FIGHT CLUB. Yup, favorite movie.

Also, Equilibrium. Badass action, decent ethical/psychological issues.

Beautiful Mind. Russell Crowe really should have won his Oscar for this.

Yeah, that's what I mean, although I don't see the need for the snarkyness in your reply...

Anyway, in the many tv shows, movies, and games I've seen featuring time travel in their plot, it always happens like this:

One person goes back in time and changes the past, and then gets stuck in your time loop. Their actions are only possible because of previous actions in the past. But those previous actions are only possible because they went back in time in the first place. Its a paradox (if I'm using the correct time travel terminology).

*Donnie Darko spoilers*

Donnie Darko doesn't do that. Donnie goes back in time once, fixes stuff, then dies, meaning he can't go back to do the stuff he just did. But for some reason, everything's okay. No cataclysmic apocalypse, no black hole to rip the universe apart, no nothing! I was quite impressed. That's not what happened in the What If machine episode of Futurama, lol.

I don't even remember making this thread. My mind must've been really into thinking about some movie for me to make it.

Great suggestions, though. I will be sure and watch those next weekend.

The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon were all good.... never scene Hannibal Rising.

Secret Window & the Village suckamaballs.
Phone Booth was just ok...
The Sixth Sense was good...

Original Saw was excellent, the sequels have never matched it IMO.

Anyone remember the Butterfly Effect? I liked it... ah shut up.

And *some* already mentioned are good: Apocalypse Now, Momento were really good

Donnie Darko was just weird btw...

Agreed. Hannibal Rising was good too. Check it out one day.

The Saw series is starting to piss me off cause I have to remember WTF happened in the first one just to understand whats going on in the forth one. I hate movies like that.

Anyone remember the Butterfly Effect? I liked it... ah shut up.

I did too.

I like ones with not so much blood or gore. If their plot twist makes you scream "WTF!", I will like it.

The Invisible, Stay, Memento, The Butterfly Effect, Beautiful Mind... those movies blew my mind.

Me too and I heard that movie sucks or something.

No has mentioned a Hitchcock fliks (you might say his movies don't fall under the requested category but I disagree)...weird.I recommend everything he has done especially Vertigo and Citizen Kane I guess counts too.

Vertigo and Psycho are good suspense films with adequate plot twists.

Butterfly Effect was a really good one, I forgot about that!

Forget the Village, piece of garbage...

Jim Carrey was awesome.

Dang, I forgot about Number 23. That's the only movie to drive me to insane levels of paranoia! Even before I saw the movie, I was convinced that the number 54 is following me. N23 just made it 23 to 54 times worse...XD

Heh, I kind of wrote that fast, but I'm just semi-obsessed with time travel media, and I wasn't sure what you meant. But yeah, I liked the Parallel Universe Theory (PUT) aspect of Donnie Darko a lot. Any time travel movie that uses PUT doesn't have paradoxes, which is why PUT is so great.

Also, Equilibrium. Badass action, decent ethical/psychological issues.

Yes, I also highly recommend Equilibrium, but it's much more of an action movie than anything else, so if you want an in depth psychological aspect -- you don't really get it.

Anyone remember the Butterfly Effect? I liked it... ah shut up.

Yes, pretty damn good, though one part irked me. SPOILERS The part where he goes back in time from the prison and stabs his hands does not work. By their methodology, once you go back it changes things from that point on -- so he would have already come into the prison with scars on his hands; so it wouldn't seem miraculous at all. Anyhow, it is still really good, and was much better than I was expecting, from Ashton especially.
