Wow. This is RIGHT OUT of Trigun.

One of my favs, by far.

Excellent work here, pretz. Good luck to ya. ;)

Interesting sounds going on here ... I'm guessing that's a soundfont guitar, or Pretzel got into guitar a while ago (maybe a Motif preset I haven't heard yet ... since there's no fret or sliding noise, I doubt it's real). The strumming sounds a little akward here.

Anyway! Nitpicking aside, this is quite a nice folk tune. I can almost imagine a gypsy band playing it at a market or something. Well done!

Feh. Right out of Trigun, huh? I bet half of you guys have never even *heard* of Tull (thankyouthankyouthankyou djp for referencing them, I can definitely hear the influence). And besides, the intro chord progression is Norwegian Wood. It is! Really, listen to it, sing along. "I once met a girl, or should I say, she once met me." It's the *same progression*. I'm not sure if Mitsuda and Uematsu noticed it, but it even feels like Norwegian Wood.

(this isn't to say I don't like the Trigun OST - but it's much more Tullish than Gunnish)

Good points... the melody at 1:08. Feels *very* Tullish. Thoroughly enjoy that one, there. The flute sound is quite excellent. The bass line is good - I'm glad you didn't just opt for a I - V - I and take the easy way out. A little more variation in the bass would have been nice.

Neutral points... well, some of the notes in the acoustic guitar throw me for a loop. I can't quite figure out why they're there, but they make sense. The drums are nice, but I'm missing some variation there, and some extra instruments would have fleshed it out a bit more, I believe. Possibly (if you're counting it in 6/8, which I'm assuming is what it is) shekere and afuche with accents on one and four, tambourine on four, cowbell playing one three four six one three five (gogo bells would work too, low on the first half, high on the second), maybe some timbale fills... percussion wise, I think it works as it is right now, but could be improved. (It's entirely possible the way I assumed the time signature was will make no sense in the morning, anyway)

To be honest with you, this feels like something that would be in a modern video game. I mean, the sounds and everything. I don't like guitar when it's not played (I'm assuming this wasn't actually played on a guitar live, it feels and sounds too strange). It feels like it should be direct from a video game, rather than a remix. Almost sounds like one of the themes from Xenogears, but I can't quite put my finger on what it feels like. Anyway, I appreciate the mix for what it is, regardless of how much I don't like the song itself, but even so, this feels very repetitive. I know there's not much subject matter, but it just has a feeling of repetition. And the ending... Tull stylish, but very abrupt. It just *ends*. As a guitarist, this feels very natural, but I don't particularly like. It perhaps a fingerstyle run of the chords with the melody might work?

It sounds good, but in my opinion, it's no more than mediocre. Not awful, but not your best work.

(all, again, in my opinion)

I'm a huge Tull fan so this was a nice treat. :) The section at 1:10 in particular has that Tull vibe and is insanely cool to boot.

Very groovy stuff. 8)

Hey, just noticed that two days in a row now the mix writeup has included a link to a prog-group...let's try to keep that trend going. ^_^

Heh, nice call on that one, but they aren't exactly the same. On Norwegian Wood when it returns to the tonic chord it goes down, and in this one it goes up. But um, yeah they are very similar.
I really liked this piece, it has a great vibe to it, that just puts you in a happy place. I especially like the percussion work, as it's more complex than most people would settle for. Also the added notes in sections never feel unnecassary to me. I thought everything was pulled off very well. From the call and response soloing to the breakdown in the middle. Minor gripes with the ending though. It just...stops. Shoulda gone with a more "folky" ending. With the guitar sort of picking the last chord slowly. Other than that, all good things from this piece.

I am packing up myself to leave for my first semester of college, and looking back I realize how enjoyable oc remix has been for the short time I participated in it during high school.

I absolutely adore the Millenial Fair Theme, and I have always found remixes of it a little lacking simply because Mitsuda himself did such a wonderful job arranging it on The Brink of Time. The pure *energy* that went into the live version blew me away.

But here is something new and fresh, I knew for sure when the drums began shuffling and the accordian began backing things up with a clean controlled vibe. All the parts, as usual, fit wonderfully together. And perhaps the most important thing about djp's mixes is this: none of it sounds strained, forced, or contrived. This sounds like a band just chillin' on a saturday afternoon with no audience but itself.

Here's a mix with that special something -- when you've analyzed all the beats and chord progressions and articulations, when you've put it through the meat grinder of thought, you won't have gotten to it all. Just listen again, and there it is, whatever we listen to music for is right there from the founding father of oc remix himself.

yh

[edit: I'd written about Lahan on Creid by accident -- I meant to refer to Mitsuda's arrangement on his 'Brink of Time' CT arranged CD. But 'My Village is Number One' from Xenogears suffers the same fate as the millenial fair does for me -- it's hard to beat Mitsuda at arrangement.]

I never heard anything from the Trigun series but I really liked this piece, it has a totally unique feel to it compared to most music on OCR lately. I like it DJP, you don't hear music done in this style too often. :)

Edit: The part around 1:58 gets me heavy nostalgia of Chrono Trigger.. Oh sweet days!!

What a great remix, you never cease to amaze me, DJP-

The Jethro Tull influence is definitely there, and I can already see this song is making fans of Tull flip out. It's like Millenia Fair was made for Tull to cover.

As someone stated earlier, I don't really hear TOO much of a Trigun influence here, though there is a slight one. Also sounds like it could've come from the Wild Arms anime series...that series obviously has a western feel to it as well...

Keep up the great work DJP, and I hope the move goes well for you. I've moved quite a few times in my life, so I know it can be rather stressful.

Say, I really liked this. Lots of fun!
Having admittedly heard very little of Jethro Tull, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that particularly the airy woodwinds and light percussion makes me think of Mannheim Steamroller.

This here is a pretty decent remix : I loved the variations and changes you did to the melody to give it rhythm and life - the question and answer section was quite groovy too. The only thing that really ruined this remix for me was the volume of the flute thingy and the guitar with the melody. Way too quiet. It seemed like they were being swamped by the drums and the background stuff.

But that's only a minorish gripe - this mix here has the vibe, the skill and just...it's groovy.

Download it.

Definitly some Trigun-style in there (but only from the last episode ending, really). Not familiar with that other artist (Jethro). Basically, this sounds like nice, ambient background music that you might very well see in the credits of the ending of something. Upbeat, well arranged, not terribly repetitive, high quality samples. 8/10 in my book.

Yo Dj Pretzel, what the $@%^ ? I've come to expect more from you, but for the last 3 or 4 remixes you've totally failed to deliver. This song was absolute crap, there was nothing original or entertaining about it. The remixing was decent quality but so what? You used to be so good, but now you're barely on par with most of the remixers on this site. This song pales in comparison to starblast's recent chrono trigger robo remix. Sorry but this is just worthless remix garbage.

TULL!! w00t!

Nice mix, very catchy, very Tull-ish, and quite nostalgic. Acoustic, but still with an edge. Addictive, and doesn't force itself into the exact melody of the fair, while still staying close enough to it to be recognizeable.

Sure to become one of my favs.

Very enjoyable. I really enjoy the interpretation and variation from the original. I've never heard of Jethro Tull, but I like what I hear... your pieces have gotten a LOT better since you stopped abusing the godawful distortion (Hardcore Densehead, dubnofantasyaloneman, and several other tracks). Keep up the good work, I hope you can pump out some more great tunage, and as they might say in Ghosts and Ghouls, the strongth is welling inside of OCR.

I agree with Blak_Omen here. This a decent remix, but the flute, and with it all other melodic instruments that's not the rhythm guitar could've been louder, especially around 1:58.

Overall, pretty nice. :nicework:

In my opinion, this is a very nicely done folk music mix! There's a lot of guitar and light percussion and occasionally sounded like Irish folk!
This is obviously not your typical techno oriented mix, and the soundsamples are top notch!

Though other reviewers think the percussion was too low, I think it was perfect! Too much percussion would've made this something entirely different than was intended. Needless to say, the tones and the samples were outstanding in this mix!

And DJP once again shows us why this is his site, damnit! :P

An excellent song, I can hear the Trigun influence, although I've never heard Tull. However, the thing that strikes me most about this remix is the flow. It just drags you in and gives you that overall mellow feeling. This is one of the tracks that I could just loop over and over.

I don't know about Trigun, but when I listen to this, I keep expecting it to break into LAHAN from the Xenogears Creid album. The acoustic guitar and drums are what do it for me. A very enjoyable, light-hearted tune, but a little disappointing because it reminded me of Creid so much yet failed to deliver that same "holy shit, this rocks" feeling. I'd still recommend it.

Once again, DJP brings his stuff to the table and has apparently whipped up another masterpiece. The funniest thing was that I was watching Trigun when I finished dling this song, and couldnt quite figure out where that song was coming from, TV or speakers. Amazing work, its so calm and never loses sight the intentions of the mix. The fact that its so fluid solidifies this blended piece. In short: amazing.

Tis pretty good. I like the style of the mix, too bad it had to be used on another Chrono Trigger song...

But yeah, not a bad mix. I've gotten really sick of the music from Chrono Trigger, but the mix was enjoyable to the point where I didnt care what game it was from, it was just a good track.

I think it's got more of a Chrono Cross vibe, not so much Trigun.

Overall, a good remix, not spectacular, but above par.

I havent seen Trigun as of yet (yeah yeah, blasphemy I know) so I cant comment on that aspect, but thats nothing major so no biggie.

I really like this one...
I noticed it was getting a little repetetive by about halfway through...but it was a good track so I hardly noticed it, which was further emphasised when you has the flutes and drums play on their own.

Im not too keen on the ending, I must say...Im not sure but I think perhaps a couple bars of sustain on that last note would've really done a better job of it, but thats nto to say that the ending you have is a bad one...just not my cup of tea.

I think that it's a very good remix, fun and enjoyable. I definitely heard the Tull in it, plus I love the chrono trigger music. If any of you haven't listened to Tull do because they're really really good. Ian anderson invented the 'Rock Flute'. Aqualung's a key hit of theirs.

I can hear Tull, Trigun, and a lot of Chrono Cross's style in this. This could fit RIGHT into the Cross soundtrack for a town somewhere. This is not a disparagement of any sort, since I -love- Cross's music with a passion. It's great! Sounds wonderful! Might have been better on live instruments, but then, what wouldn't be?

I usually don't post reviews for mixes....But after a few days of playing this song nonstop I feel as if I have to just to get what I have to say about this mix off my chest.

And what I have to say is that this just might be the best production the Pretz' has ever put out....The title intrigued me....And I'll admit I'd never thought Chrono Trigger's Millenial Fair Theme was anything to write home about....But man!! Everything about this mix is top notch. The guitar and flute sounded especially sweet...As soon as the drums kicked in the song actually made me think for a second that he actually threw a part from the Trigun soundtrack in there....(Maybe he did and the two songs just sound similar..I haven't heard all of Trigun's music.) And of course, myself being a Tull fan, as soon as the flute kicked in it had me hooked.

Easily my favorite mix on the site...A big kudos to you DJ Pretzel...You're doing a damned good job.

Having never seen Trigun or heard Tull, I really can't comment on the inspiration. Still, I really liked this remix. The instruments just seemed to really fit well together. At times, this mix almost sounded a little Suikodenish to me, which is definitely a good thing. *shrug*

You call this having a Trigun influence? Where are the crazy-weird tom rolls? Heh.

Overall though, honestly, I do like this. It doesn't really have the western feel of Trigun IMO, but it does have a synthed guitar that sounds good in its own right. I haven't heard anything from Jethro Tull so I can't comment on relation to that.

Quite a refreshing take on one of my favorite songs from CT. I'd just like to chime in with my thoughts on the Trigun side of the inspiration (not to downplay Tull at all, mind you.)

Definitly some Trigun-style in there (but only from the last episode ending, really)...

I totally agree with zircon here, while most of the music from Trigun uses much more distortion on the guitar melodies, the song that immediately sprang to mind when I listened to Jethro and Vash at the Fair was the Trigun song: Fool's Paradise (the finale end credits) I even had to listen to the two songs back to back a few times to feel satisfied. Sadly, this brought to me what I feel to be the only weakness of pretzel's mix: the synth instruments here come up a bit short compared to the sound (and subsequently the feel) produced by both sources of inspiration.
Overall, I quite enjoy this mix. The arrangement is brilliant, while I would love to hear pretzel bring us a live instrument version (or a more polished synth even) I will happily add Jethro & Vash at the Fair to my playlist.

Thanks!

Just wanted to say that while I didn't like it at first (I thought it had too much ornamentation, but I was being skeptical), I do now! It's very addictive. I think I can hear all of the sources too. The guitar at the beginning actually doesn't remind me of Trigun, but more commercial rock. The bass does, however. I also agree with the person that said it sounds very Xenogears Creid-ish; I think that's the bass in the background too. That's one of the best parts of the song, but everything is just really good, especially "Jethro the flute". I think the ending is okay. It kind of reminds me of "Palm" from the Grandia OST. Great job!

A fun remix, I enjoy it's sound. I wish every fair I went to was playing this tune...it just fits with the atmosphere of excitement and community, all the while evoking feelings and memories of fairs past. At around 2:00 the remix moves into that short late afternoon lunch/break feel, when you and mom and pop are chillin' at a picnic table chompin on hotdogs, corn and giant pickle... and then dives right back into the festivities.

These guys don't know nothing about music. This is one of my favorites. It's fantastic.

Good news!
The guittar strings sounds very real. I guess it was made with a real acoustic guittar. If the intention was make the music sounds "real", you got it. Amazing! The arrangement (mainly the little beat on the guittar) is great. An OCR Grammy for sure. It's not a question of taste. There was criativity, feeling and sensibility on making the new arrangement. Sounds really beautiful.

Bad News!
I can't belive that some guys didnīt like this mix...

I've always been fond of this mix. No, it isn't his best (that honor belongs to Booster Tarantino (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01000) in my opinion for so many reasons) but it jives. If you're looking for hardcore electronica, you'll probably be disappointed. This song just jives, though, and it's VERY faithful to the spirit of the original. Frankly, I think the artificial guitar helps the piece to flow a bit more. A real guitar would sound odd against all the precussion, I think. And it isn't too loud, the original was pretty reliant on background precussion too.

This piece rocks the socks, Pretzel - I'd like to hear more like it.

Regardless of my not-even-close-to-perfect in most forms of artistic creation, I tend to be overly critical and analytical about all forms of art, merely because I personally prefer constructive criticism to compliment. If anything below sounds like an insult, apologies in advance.

Pretty awesome. I always found the tune at the fair catchy in the game. Light, playful, and just perfectly fit both the atmosphere and time period the festival was taking place in. Any version of this appeals to me. More specifically to your remix, I really liked the way the sounds of the guitar and flute mixed together as they worked together, both in unison and in harmony. It's always pleasant when someone combines the sounds of two very different instruments into something that just works. The dynamic contrast was also great, especially around the large "break" before the last reprise of the theme. It was a nice shift when the percussion cut out, leaving a calm, less rhythmic, waltzy-type section.

A lot of the little counterpoint stuff going on was quite intriguing as well--the accordian was especially noticable when the melody cut out for one phrase, which stayed in the background since it blended so well with the melody. The echo variation where you followed a flute riff with a nearly identical guitar riff was pretty clever, as well. The melody itself also appeared meticulously variated. Lovin' the rhythmic figures in that, especially the second part of it.

More about the percussion though--and this is probably just attributed to the samples used, and sort of just a personal thing--somehow, the snare drum didn't quite work for me. I think it kind of felt a little more like a sailor's march--green was made bluer, Ireland to Scotland, and all that. Not a huge different, but somehow felt a little to hard to me. Perhaps a tap on the side of the snare with the stick as opposed to a snare-on hit? Not in all sections, though. At the end, right after the break, that snare was perfect. Maybe it's just the repeating nature of it. Also, in the soft, percussion-less section, somehow my mind was serching for a straight 3/4 waltz, as opposed to the 3/4--6/8 feel the rest of the song. It was almost there, save the little tinny cymbal.

VERY nice, though. Sorry if I wasn't much help so much as a hindrance, since it's hard to be specific without audio in front.

great remix, very nice and calming. I love this song much more than the original, although I found that Blind's remake of it was 100% perfect. Give me a second....my vision is getting a little blurry from my tears....

****cries and balls over the shut down of CTRP****

ok, where was I....Yes, great remix and I just love that flute you've got in their, and the gentle beat of that bongo or whatever that small hand beaten drum is. Good stuff!

Jethro and Vash... the flute was too solid to sound like Jethro Tull, but it's still a greal ReMix. It sounds calming and clean, definitely a different ReMix. Most of the remixers, in the effort of being far from the original, produce a song with too much arrangements, too much noise... This is calm and simple. I really like it. But... it calls for a base guitar... XD

I tried to see it out of your direction, but it ainīt true. The original was good, but it was a whole lotta MIDIS and small synths that made funny and happy noises. That feeling is still here, that I can say he didnīt change, but he has changed all of those SNES-music-instruments into some real good acoustic guitars along with a flute that gives the feeling of carneval that has once returned to the goodīol west where it belongs and will belong. If this mix represents his house, then it had to be some sort of royal castle, because this remix was great.

I can't believe I haven't thrown in my two-cents worth on this song yet... If I have and I just missed it, whatever.
This is freakin amazing. Maybe it's personal taste, but this song just rubs me in all the right ways. This ties Stray Donkey Strut for my favorite DJP mix. The guy is freakin incredible. I love the way the instruments mesh and how the individual parts play off of each other. It's all genius. 10/10

Oh man... Chrono Trigger meets Trigun? Heavy inspiration from Fool's Paradise, one of the best songs from the soundtrack makes for an incredible result! Great job.

djpretzel, you are the man. This song rocks. One thing I noticed, is from 2:56 onward a musical allusion to "ELM", from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack?

Sounds pretty good for an all-samples guitar mix, and while it's pretty conservative arrangementwise, it's very enjoyable and has some good modulations and solid programming.
