Final Fantasy 8 'Eyes on Me (Obsession)'

Can't honestly say I like this mix. I don't like industrial. And I'm not fond of music that has plain speaking (ie: not singing) throughout. Not my cup of tea, but if you're into industrial and/or distortion then it could be a suggestion.

Of all of Children of the Monkey Machine's work, I think I'd have to say that this is my favorite. The reason being the lead instrument during the non voice parts, and the voice parts themselves. The echo is just perfect, not so extreme that you can't understand, and just extreme enough to give the song its feeling. An, impressive way of capturing the atmosphere and emotion.

I listened to it once and loved it as a concept piece. But I doubt I'd listen to it again. Neat song, but it's way too out there for me to be able to enjoy over and over.

Why hasn't this song been reviewed more times?

It's a beautiful piece, haunting, unable to leave you alone. The whole theme of the song (love from a distance) has been twisted around into some obsession/stalking theme, that disturbs me to no end. It has a sort of nightmarish quality to it that made the song addictive.
When I first heard it I couldnt stop listening to it for days.

The vocals are brilliant... so solemn, yet so intense... and the end quote: "Oh god, you're still smiling" had me brooding for days.

I love this intense piece of work. One of the best out here!

The melody at the beginning (reminded me of a bubble) was alright but occasionaly it sounded a little too....loud and shrieky.
Nevertheless the vocals are very good and I like the idea of having them as a monologue instead of sung (plus Dani sounds more or less how I imagined Julia)

i thought it was a 6 on a 1-10 scale, that is untill it reached the singing, then it got kinda wierd, if it didn't repeat the words, then it would be much better

later :D

I've only reviewed only one other song (djp's "Lord Protektor" from Actraiser) and I felt that this song really grabbed my attention. . .

The first time I heard the vocals sent chills down my spine and I really had to make sure "she" was saying the right words to the song. . .Absolutely spine-tingling, freaky, and soooo sad. . .and most importantly, verrrry well-done. . .I like this a LOT!!!

Hmmm. . .maybe someone can do a Castlevania mix and with an Alucard monologue, aye?

I had to listen to this several times to truly appreciate it...

...one of the most haunting pieces I've heard, with a very omnious ending.

Definately fits CoTMM and is very good stuff if you like his other pieces

This song is beyond good, when i started to listen to it, it only took 2 turns and i was hooked, and i still am, this is an amazing song and sounds spooky, but the words are perfect like the song, the ending is awesome, and this is a good song all through out, 10/10...

I love this song. i throw it in the catagorie with that recent Wizards & Warriors theme as weird songs that i can listen to when i want inspiration. i love the whole turn with making Eyes on Me sound evil, one. and the lyrics.....the first time i heard it a shiver ran down me' spine...ummm

9/10

Dude Was someone Drinking or Smoking when they made this one? Com'on now what the Hell is this Crap? Someone should ban this man from ever making remixes. PLZ no more of this Crap.

Perhaps next time, in your infinite critical wisdom, you can give reasons for your dislike. Like this:
"Hey, I didn't like your song because X was Y and should have been Z."
So if I were to critique your critique, for example, it would be something like this:
"Hey, I didn't like your critique of the song because it exemplified your lack of compassion, disregard for creativity, complete lack of argument, poor spelling (it's "c'mon") and random use of capitalization. PLZ no more of this crap."
Hopefully this was educational for all involved. Oh, and for the record, Obsession (Eyes on Me) is a creepy, wonderful song that fondly reminds me of Sting's Every Breath You Take.

I love the vocals, although they're a little harder to understand than I like...

Wow this song is amazing, you have totally outdone yourself this time, really WOW, the new vocals and that distortion kind of effect are amazing with those drums quietly playing all the way through. A+

CotMM is a very talented artist but many of his works are a bit avant garde and difficult to appriciate. This song broke the mold for me with its bleak melody and haunting vocals; it captured me after just one listen and hasnt let go.

When pretzel said that monologue was whack, he wasn't kidding.

The first minute the music I didn't even recognized to be related to the origional. Throw in that crazy lady ( i say crazy because i have no other way to describe the voice echo's)

I found this piece to be an insult to the origional and now have a firm belief that, like one winged angel, this piece should never have been remade.

I actually did not like this piece at all. I could barely tell what song it was when I was listening to it, and if the song's already half over by the time I can identify it I don't think it rates very highly.

I didn't like the vocals, in fact I hated them. I will agree they sound 'creepy', which is not my thing and so I do have bias, but that the vocals sound like someone just talking and not singing ruins the song for me. There is no power in the song, there is no motivation or anything, it's just a monotonic piece with a somewhat annoying reverb that sounds like someone down on their luck in the slums trying to convey some sort of message that no one hears or cares about.

The original song was beautiful and dramatic, and was first played between Squall and Rinoa when they first pretty much confess their feelings for each other, which is a major breakthrough for Squall. This, however, does not have any of that feeling at all. There is no emotion or compassion.

The original was a love song, this one is not, and while I don't think every remix must have all of the original meaning for it to be good, I do believe a remix should have at least some of it. Overall this was just not an interesting improvement for me.

Yeah, but that was the point of this one. This is supposed to be a somber, depressed rendition of it. Kinda like an unrequited type of thing...

I guess that's why I don't like it, because I don't "get" the point, whatever it may be. When I first heard it, I didn't know what it was for a while, so I'm listening to it trying to figure it out, and I didn't really care for the way it sounded to begin with. Then I hear this voice which freaked me out/annoyed me so much that I tossed my headphones away @_@;;, and THEN I get the wake up call, "Oh, it's Eyes on Me..." except I can't understand it at this point, because I'm saying to myself, "WTH? This is Eyes on Me???"

I guess I'm just too much of a fan of the original, whether that's a good thing or not when you're listening to remixes, I dunno. This one just didn't click for me.

Great stuff, the tuneage sets the mood and then the monologue makes it clear what it's about (reminds me a bit of "There's Only Me" by Rob Dougan). CotMM's very good at these twists on the themes of the original song, rather than simply changing the song while it's about the same sorts of things (which the vast majority of game music remixes are).

Appreciate or no appreciate. This song isn't very well made. Its not nearly at the level of other Cotmm mixes. Its really not much of anything.

The vocals sound very close to what I would imagine an obsessed stalker would sound like. VERY believable and creepy. She sounded like she was almost crying at the end there. I agree, the vocals gripped me and gave me multiple shivers. I heard this song on Ormgas while writing a report, and I stopped what I was doing just to come over here and review it.

Definately deserves a re-listen or three.

I have to say, I downloaded this music a few months ago, and it made me cry. Probably the voice, or something, anyways I deleted it immediately, I thought it was waaay too depressing for me! To this very day, I am afraid of this remix! No kidding, if I commit suicide, CotMM will be the one to blame!

Wow. I likewise found this song off ormgas, and felt the need to say something about it. I generally find CotMM songs between boring and downright unlistenable - they're just not my thing. The first half of the song, when it was just background, I was thinking this would be just another of the same. But then the vocals came in, and bang. This song is the first of CotMM's song I found unique in a really cool, "I'm gonna have to listen to that one again" sort of way, rather than unique in the "why would anyone bother" sort ;).

This remix is not that bad. As a matter of fact, it's actually pretty good, and creepy as all get out. It reminds me of all love stories going wrong.

Then again, I'm weird.

This song reminds me of something dreamlike, sort of strange; at the very beginning, there's a sort of uncomfortable tension, where therafter it slips into some sort of unconscious feeling, like fainting, and the rest is just some sort of delusional trail of thought.

The monologue adds to the same feeling, with some sort of psychosis, some kind of stressing, torcherous, continuous thoughts, kind of driving the speaker into the sort of confused, lost, delusion. The accent sounded a bit southern, but still, pretty genuine.

I enjoyed listening to the song, even if it was a bit strange, kind of unfamiliar at first.

And the ending is pretty nice, a very different feeling in comparison to the rest.

Hmm. I hope that makes sense.

CotMM has always done some sort of weird remixes, but this GOTTA take the price. It sure is Eyes on Me, and that´s what really freaks me out. I will check the lyrics for this one, or more like the conversation of that girl.

This mix gives off some sort of depressive feeling, like someone´s life got destroyed by drugs or something. But still, very individual for taking such a task trying to give this track the total opposite of the original.
Good work.

This is by far one of my favorite CotMM remixes. The monologue makes me shiver everytime I hear it. It's just so emotional, the entire song conveys the feeling of obsession and stalking. It's just brilliant on every level. I love the choice of sounds too. That lead synth, it kind of sounds bubbly, but distorted, definitely something that took a lot of time to craft. (not a 3x3 Osc preset in flstudio) The whole song, is just haunting, whenever this plays, I just stop everything I'm doing, absorbed into the song, it's just amazing, through and through one of the best remixes on the site, and I know I say that about a lot of the remixes on the site, but this is just brilliant. 12/10

I must admit i dont like this mix. But its a love it or hate it kind of thing

The problem here is you are trying to top A. One hell of a song with one beautiful voice. B. One of the best scenes in FF VIII that quite frankly begins to pull everything into focus. It was no coincidence the song was used there. But i wont go into spoiler info. It was a good attempt i suppose but its never been nor will be my cup of tea.

I can't stand this mix. Absolutely the worst thing I have ever heard. First off, song lyrics are not supposed to be spoken in monotone. It just doesn't work. Secondly, it was a monotone within a song, which count's as double points against it. I first listened to it months ago and now I am reviewing it with the song(?) playing in the background and I just turned it off because it just sucked so bad. This does not reflect obsession, it creates a terrible mess of thoughts inside one's head and the like of which shouldn't even be accompined with music in the first plece. Also, it wasn't creepy at all. It was just annoying and did a terrible job of trying to be destrubing if that was the intention. The music was even disgraceful, and relied way to heavily on reverb that was overdone and created an even bigger mess. I can find no saving grace anywhere in this song. It is just a mess of crappy sounds thrown in a blender and half mixed at low speed.

I believe someone here is suffering from the 'imajerkus' disease.

Actually, I think the biggest problem is people don't look at it objectively. This piece is an experimental piece from what I've seen. It's not supposed to be like the original. At all. Amazing how upset people can get, whatever happened to creative license?

Anyway, I think the biggest problem I have with it, is that it's rather difficult to understand Dani's vocals with the sound set at a low volume. I suppose it's supposed to be played louder than that, but I'd rather not blow out my eardrums. XD

Aside from that, I really enjoyed the twisted new take on one this, I liked the original, but I'm not so much of a purist as to hate seeing someone playing around with it. Also, I could never figure who was supposed to be the stalker; the vocalist, or the guy she's talking about.

This track is one of the most incredible things I've heard on OCR. FF8 is my favorite PS game, so I don't take its remixes lightly. Rather than trying to "improve" on the OSV, you did something completely different, which is rare, and it worked, which is much rarer!!

One criticism I have is that the middle part is probably a bit too complicated, which distracts from the excellent rendering of the lyrics. Maybe if there was a bit less echo, and if she sounded more distant... The piano accompaniment at that point is perfect; couldn't have been done better.

The, "oh god, you're still smiling!" was an insightful addition and just about made me fall out of my chair. Good work, you made my day.

You can throw me on the "I liked it" pile. I've always kept an extra-open mind when it comes to CotMM, because I know it most certainly does not pay off to tackle some of his material with heavy expectations. That being said, the accessibility here isn't as strained as some of his other works.
It plays like a haunting eulogy in the shadow of the original and that alone is bound to not be everyone's ideal listening experience, but I think it's the vocals that must be throwing a lot of people off. Admittedly, the first time I heard them I thought they were a very hard sell and didn't think they belonged. They have grown on me after a few runthroughs, but they aren't quite right and fail to convey the amount that they could have. You could say they sound creepy because of it, but I think it's just that they are askew to the mix's design.
It's adequate sombre stuff, and both a successful and imperfect experiment with monologue. It deserves props for being different at the very least. I really didn't mind this at all.

I love the voices, and I love this mix. Great work
