I've realized that the DW Radio Drama Hour is probably a lot funnier if you're familiar with the game, so that might be why some hate it. Either that, or there's just some people that have no tastes. :P

Rexy
05-08-2005, 07:18 PM
Heck, all I knew about the game was that it involved a hero that had to fight against a dragon lord (I wasn't expecting the Old English language, various maiden sub-plots and other core elements/locations of the quest i.e. the Rainbow Bridge) but I still found it too cool for kicks.

I even told Larry about it prior to my call last week, even though he's all "I look into the entries after the contest is over"... where's the fun in that? :)!!

KyleJCrb

Interestingly enough, I've never played Dragon Warrior myself, but I still found a lot of the stuff XMark referenced funny. I think it partially was because most of it was just good ol' RPG cliches, and that I am slightly familiar with the DW storyline due to the fact that my best friend absolutely loves the series. I think a little bit of familiarity is helpful, but I think it's funny enough to stand on its own, too. :)

8 hours of VGF goodness = something that I MUST check out when the MP3 is up :D

Now that I think of it, we haven't had much new since #56 from a month back. I understand given it's exams and all, though o.O

Now that we mention it...

OMFG we had an 8-hour VGF?!? Someone call the record books! :P

wow...i wasn't listening, although i did talk to larry a couple of times off-air during the show before i slept around 1:30.

well, i always knew he had stamina.

Larry's Sleep Schedule This Past Week:
Wed afternoon to thursday night (no sleep)
Thursday-Friday (5hrs of sleep)
Friday to Saturday (5hrs of sleep)
Saturday to Sunday (no sleep)

How will Larry Oji continue this reckless pace? Will he ever solve the Riddle of the Minotaur or wander aimlessly the maze of OCReMix babbling incoherently about D-Lux and "Toyota Disco??"

We'll find out in the next episode "Larry is OverClocked," same Bat-time, Same Bat-place.

And maybe he'll let me come too....

Rexy: I think it would be funny to put up a betting pool as to how many hours of sleep larry will get before graduation. I'm guessing on average 3 a night.

HAHA it's true! As i said when i called in, LARRY IS A ROBOT! He doesn't need sleep.

What explains his half-asleep voice tone at the start of VGF 47? :P

But yeah... I see him as a black machine alright, one that definitely strives hard to show his efforts on pimping a lot of slick music across the community, whether at OCR or otherwise :)

The radio drama probably would have been a lot better if it hadn't been at about 1 am, right after an 80 or so minute interview section. And while the idea itself was funny, the voice was kinda... Off. Especially at 32 kb/s with $10 headphones.

On further contemplation, let's just have Larry's leg get humped by a slime.

Use a mp3pro decompressor for Winamp and you have the same sound as if you'd listen to the RM stream. It's that simple and is also standing in the #vgf topic.

Bah. Lost the first 80 minutes of the show thanks to Cool Edit's very impractical Paste function, which just pastes a copied section at the beginning of the file, replacing the length of the clip with what you paste, instead of pasting it to replace what you actually highlight. If Roland's got it, I can bootleg a stream recording and connect what I've got. Also, Kyle, I'm gonna need a copy of your first call. My sincere apologies, bros y sis'es.

Aight, I got 5 shows to do in a day and some change. Currently recording #52, featuring Sonic 2 "Hedgehog Heaven", as I'm posting. Y'all can hang in #VGF at any time for the follies. Links and stuff are on page 1 of the thread. We'll be going for #s 52, 53, 57, 58 & 60.99/Finale if I have time. Wish me the luck, and happy radio to all. [/Engrish]

Larry, we know that you can do it - like Paige said, you've got a helluva lot of stamina. :D

Flik
05-13-2005, 12:41 PM
Larry definatly wins the stamina war. I think I'm close behind though. Never did go to sleep last night, and here I am at work for ten hours now. By the time I get off I'll have been awake for 25 hours! And I'll likely still stay up after getting off. Wheeee!

Compyfox
05-13-2005, 01:25 PM
Change of plan, so it semms... Larry said VGF61 will be tonight, and tomorrow at the usual schedule (maybe a bit sooner) will be VGF60.99. Though he has to confirm that by himself.

And yeah... the stamina is crazy... Yet he didn't fade out. But he's short before it unless he sniffs(!) caffeine tabs.

Rexy
05-13-2005, 01:31 PM
Any idea what is the case for the final show? And do you think he may accept phone calls for either 61 or 60.99? Because I'm destined to get hooked up once more before the show closes its doors O.O

Either way... yeah. I'm going to drop my remix tools for 48 hours to see this show go off with a bang. *cue tears of happiness here*

On a side note... VGF53 is up on Larry's server! Must... grab... mwahaha.

Compyfox
05-13-2005, 02:42 PM
Okay now I have some more infos...

VGF#61 will be dropped (was the earlier last show), the last show will be VGF#60.99!

Schedule for today:
Larry finishes the running show, then he does like a 2 hour break at least and then get's back to the marathon with VGF#58 (Makeup) and then the very final show VGF#60.99 (which is a best of, and he plans no call in's).

That means... earliest restart at 12pm EST again.

See ya all later. ;)

ADDITIONAL:
Right now there's a rerun of an elder show running - or more like random stuff, so don't be too confused. heh.

Rexy
05-13-2005, 03:56 PM
I won't be confused ^^

And... whatever happened to his webdrive? It's asking for a password and stuff. What gives? :? I even tried IE which I can access just fine, but all the files there are asking for passwords. I can access Paige's folder and file contents just fine; any idea what's happening with Larry's?

But yeah, I'll be prepared to listen into the makeup show at least.

[EDIT: And I did, as well as going far into the #53 re-run (you had me scared when the track suddenly switched to n-joy's OC ReMix though o_O). Best of luck with the season finale!]

For the record, I managed to record Paige's singing malarky (http://rexy.herograw.com/paige-toyota.mp3) in the aftershow. Even though I know that Compyfox will provide a better recording, I think it's almost too cool to take on cue. I love a woman who can sing on a parody.

The Coop
05-14-2005, 07:47 AM
Yeah, I know. I didn't listen to more than a couple shows during this season and the previous one, as such, I have little room to say much. Blame it on my dial up connection. Being trapped in a slow stream and a heavily lagged chatroom kind of ruined the whole experience for me. But the time I got my half cable connection... well, the two seasons of being constantly fifteen-plus minutes behind what everyone else was listening to (and talking about) just got to me. As such, I ended my time listening and chatting with VGF. When I got half cable, I'd not been listening for some time, and by then I'd just... given up the show. Call me an ass, call me whatever, but there's why I rarely came around in these last two seasons.

Regardless, you made quite the run Larry. The late nights I was there were usually worth a laugh in the chatroom, and you did give my remixes some air time. For that, you're efforts, and your desire to always try and make up lost time when a technical problem arose, I thank you. It's a shame to lose your show, but as the old saying goes... all good things must come to an end.

So kudos Larry, and of course...

Larry has to edit a load of shows, so it will take a while, I guess. You just have to be patient as the shows are planned to come out chronologically. VGF#56 was an exeption though.

But one of the major rules still apply:
The less call-ins, the less editings, the faster a show comes out. If Larry as the time of course.

Same here :) Even though it puzzles me over how the shows will be hosted outside the Emory campus, I'm still interested in hearing into the recordings.

Mind, is there any chance that he'd host some of the remaining chatlogs sometime soon (52, 53, 57, 58, 60 and 60.99)? I'm sure they seem easier to host than a lot of shows at this precise moment in time O.o

Are the judges so pusillanimous that they would refuse to even acknowledge the challenger's existence, much less counter her accusations and campaign planks?

I agree with CHz, a debate should be allowed. Of course, I am confident that Liontamer will also ignore my request.

I would expect nothing less from the likes of "On the Down LOji," whose five o'clock shadow shadiness is clearly symbolic of his darker intentions to rid the OCRemix world of Democracy, Truth, and the American Way.

I encourage you all to entreat The Panel to allow me to engage Liontamer in a duel of Wits and Tits. You'll find that I am far superior in both categories.

Are there any MP3s for shows 51 through the rest out there? I heard some hard work is being done, but for which ones specifically again? Only checking this thread randomly doesn't do too well for me, especially finding out that everything's pretty much dead. Shouldn't there be an easily accessible update of all of what's happened, so that noobs and rare visitors can know? Took awhile going through the last 10 pages of thread to get what was going on.

Thanks for the question/interest, sir. Except for #56, #51-#60.99 have to be edited, tagged and released, which'll progressively happen over the course of the summer. In the meantime, I'll be bringing back the weekly VGF Pimp Sections fairly soon.

For certain, I enjoy babbling on and on about OCREmix, as a two and a half year expert on not listening to remixes or paying attention to the website and artistic happenings within the community.

However, I do not recall when I discussed the intricacies and spiritual benefits of Yoga.

Perhaps I shall meditate on this topic as I hold my Warrior Stance for an hour attempting to channel the Great Void.

It is true my friends, you see Liontamer's example has established a cult following around the world. Is this what you want OCRemix to be synonymous with? As he is, after all, an official presence on your judges panel.

Vote for me and I'll wear sexy little numbers every time I accept or reject a submission and you can bet your bottom dollar everything inside will be authentic. Course, I won't post any pictures but you can leave it all to your imagination ;)

Honestly the very least Liontamer could have done was tried to look like a woman or shaved... There are some very beautiful drag queens/transsexuals out there...Larry could have made a gorgeous woman, maybe a Tina Turner Look-Alike. I bet someone can find an appropriate pic of that.

But then I'm sure he would be too busy curling his eyelashes and moisturizing all the time to be my lover.

Post comments preferably through Ormgas.com! (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11101)

And with another summer in tow, we herald the return of the VG Frequency Pimp Sections, where I spotlight the goods in community music releases for all the people out there who are interested in seeing what the VG remix community has to offer but are too lazy to click every which place. These columns always took awhile last year, but I was even able to balance my newly-acquired judgeship with this, so I think we'll manage.

As for VG Frequency the radio show, the last 10 episodes will all be worked on once I get a hold of a WAV editing program from my backup man from the other side of the ocean, Roland "Compyfox" Löhlbach (http://www.studio-compyfox.de). They'll come along slowly but surely once I get some editing stuff to work with. 3 of the back episodes are actually ready to go, but I'll need to use a highspeed connection to host the material, so I'll probably swing by Yale Library.

Stick around for updates on the future of the show, if in fact I'll be doing something with it again after late August rolls around. In the meantime, send me money, plz. ($$$) Aight, let's get into the musiczs bros. You've got a lot of stuff to check out for the week ending May 14th.

Maxis - "Pop Station - Track 4" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [The Sims 2 (PC Game Rip)]
The winning track for Song of the Week, Week #23, this was a pretty energetic offering courtesy of a game series I've never played, The Sims. I'd go for SimCity 2000, SimCity 3000 or SimCity 4 any day of the week, but I'll admit I was surprised that The Sims itself had a soundtrack like this. Don't be fooled by "Pop Station" in the title. You won't hear any Top 40 style material here, so give this one a look.

Shigeku Hayashi - "L Map (General)" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Tengai Makyo II Manjimaru OST]
Quite the cute and quaint vibe on this one, if you're into music with a festive vibe and lots of pizzicato string action. The 2nd place track in Song of the Week, Week #23, it's a nice composition featuring a small orchestra from a game that probably involves cute animals and so forth running around. Here, you CAN judge a book by it's cover. /grin

Jiro Okada & bosque aroma - "Koroku's Theme" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Genso Suikoden III Music Collection ~Rustling of the Wind~ AST]
If you want some quality Weather Channel style jazz, you've gotta pick up the 3rd place finisher in Kaleb Grace's Song of the Week competition for Week #23. Reminds me a bit of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and whoever plays the sax in there, but if you know anyone who performs in this style you'll be able to rattle off some bands. In any case, very catchy arranged material that you'll hopefully pass along to a friend. Will they be able to tell it's VGM? Of course not. Be a proud video game music ambassador and change some minds with this catchy cut.

Ailsean - Dragon Warrior 3 "Dragon Dreams" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4086) [VGMix2 #4086]
The winning track in the Dwelling of Duels: Dragon Warrior competition, this one narrowly (i.e. by only 1 point) beat out Ryan8Bit's "A Legend is Born" to take the victory. Short but sweet, this is some of Sean's nicest material in a while, and a true treat for any of y'all who miss his contributions to OCR. The VGMix version has some further tweaks and improvements compared to the DoD version, making it a must-download for any fans of VG guitar rock or the wookie specifically.

Carbunk1e - Count Duckula "Psyduckula" (http://animeremix.org/Remix.php?REMIXID=58) [Anime Remix #58]
That Vincent Price intro brings back tons of good memories. Matt gives ya some sweet technoduckula style with this techno take on the Duckula theme song. Who knew old Nickelodeon could be dusted off and given this type of hot overhaul. Some of the sounds are a bit stock sounding, but everything was put together excellently, making this one to DL and shake the booty too. This one managed to take 2nd place to analoq's "duckypoos" back in The People's Remix Competition: Animation Halloween 2004 and makes me wants those guys to bring that compo back full-force. C'mon y'all, I've got to hear someone break off some remixes of Looney Tunes scores. In the mean time, you definitely can't go wrong with the solid groove of my man Crunk1e.

Christian Pacaud - Baldur's Gate "Child of the Murder God" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4108) [VGMix2 #4108]
Christian's great in that he can hit you with the rock or woo you with the 88 keys. Here he opts for the latter with a lush, emotive solo piano arrangement from Baldur's Gate, a soundtrack which it looks like I'll need to check out for myself. Looking at the title, I'm more inclined to think of something like Akuma from Street Fighter rather than this. Especially in the latter half though, the performance conveys the drama and energy to suggest that the title isn't a misnomer. Enchanting work from Christian, who I can't wait to see bring his piano skills to OCR as well.

Darangen - "Exodus" (http://www.darangen.com/download/music/Exodus.mp3) [http://www.darangen.com] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8431)
Darangen decided to showcase an older original track of his. While the production is pretty bad, this 6 year old track was nonetheless a creative precursor to Mike's soon-to-be-posted Final Fantasy 6 remix "Deadly Promises". Hearing this older piece only makes me appreciate the skill with which it was woven into what is in my opinion the best "Terra" mix ever made. One to check out for the curiosity factor, go ahead and give it that look.

PICK OF THE WEEK: DCT & Just Us - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Memories Frozen in Time" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01350) [OC ReMix #1350]
Hip-hop & rap need more coverage in the community, and DCT's always been working hard towards pimping those genres in the hopes of turning around some of the biased, the ignorant, the people that are straight-up Haterade. The obvious comparisons to Eminem's lyrical style in "Mockingbird" have been made, but aside from that, the IceCap Zone theme has been given the rap instrumental treatment, and it's managed to in fact get the props from some people that normally wouldn't be fans of rap mixes. This should be one that has appeal to both the rap familiar along with the uninitiated, which makes it a got-to-have-it.

DigiE - Appleseed "Bringing Home the Appleseed" (http://animeremix.org/Remix.php?REMIXID=61) [Anime Remix #61]
I'm not much of an anime fan to be honest, but I do watch some and I've liked a handful, including Appleseed, which had one of the funniest dubbed scenes I've ever scene in any cartoon [a terrorist yelling "Eat It!", and only ending up getting shot by a police sniper]. In any case, DigiE, otherwise known at Section III Studios around these parts initially opened up this mix with some synth orchestral work that eventually gave way to a techno/orchestral hybrid track that possessed some good momentum. The atmosphere is a bit tense here once things get underway, but could have used a bit more energy and realism for the orchestral work. Certainly a great track to give you an idea of what some of the material at Anime Remix generally brings, so check out what Genesis & Nemesis have put together here.

Ellywu - "Frog's Intervention" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4085) [Chrono Symphonic / VGMix2 #4085]
Chris goes for yet another cinematic-style orchestration, this one exhibiting some good dynamics and interesting ideas. Frog's theme doesn't make its way into the picture until the track's about 90 seconds underway, but with over 5 minutes of material, there's more than enough time for that kind of build. Pretty nice execution overall, this certainly worked in weaving Frog's theme with a Harry Gregson-Williams like cinematic upgrade. That's almost a cliché of sorts in the community, but the performance certainly brings those types of analogies to mind. It doesn't take much to entice a download where Chrono Trigger is concerned, but for any stragglers should check out this offering from Claddou Shou's titanic effort to score the soundtrack of the would-be Chrono Trigger: The Movie.

GaMeBoX - Metroid 1 "Drifting in a Kelp Sea" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4116) [VGMix2 #4116]
The atmosphere is a bit too murky to really appreciate everything this track has to offer, but this was a sexy ambient track featuring piano work to accentuate the very chilled setting. Some guitar work entered in about halfway to further add to an already seductious piece. It doesn't possess the refinement of Vigilante, who's own mellower offerings this one reminded me of, but GaMeBoX is a name not to pass up, as Steve'll be getting his name out there further, hoping making his mark on the ??? project.

Gecko Yamori - Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun "Industroscout" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4128) [VGMix2 #4128]
Aside from the usual material from Sonic CD & Streets of Rage, Gecko often tackles more eclectic games, including this take on Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun. With some synth electric guitar taking the lead, this was a pretty thick, driving track that displays a slightly harder edge than previous work I've heard from Dan. Some impressive synth-driven licks around the 2-minute mark were a highlight as the track amped up the intensity even more in the second half. A little rough-sounding and overcompressed, I still liked the sheer power displayed here, so hook it up.

Gwilym Wogan - "a 'mother's day,' if you will" (http://gwilym.vgmix.com/hoj/mother.mp3) [http://gwilym.vgmix.com] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8420)
Gwilym Wogan - "skull's dance" (http://gwilym.vgmix.com/hoj/skulldance.mp3) [http://gwilym.vgmix.com] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8420)
What the hell do you call Gwilym's style? I'm sure they're a name for it. The infamous creator of the eye-opening short album "the meinpenis zeitgeist" be back at ya with the quirkiest of kwakery courtesy of this double shot of tracks. I haven't played this track for my mom, but there's no doubt she'd either love it or ask me what the hell it was. "skull's dance" is an even shorter track that also revels in its off-kilter composition. The sounds are pretty simple, and the energy's great. When you're judging stuff for OCR, MIDIs tend to be the bane of existence, but in Gwilym's hands, they're the deadliest of weapons. I could listen to Gwilym's or fellow VGMix staffer smh's material for quite a while. Don't miss out.

housethegrate - "Riven Dreams" (http://vgr.dragolf.net/tunes/house/housethegrate-Riven_Dreams.mp3) [http://www.housethegrate.com] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8448)
First he was "Seized with Fury", now he's seized by the devil. Alexander Liss pimps out some relatively rare original material with this awesome death metal release. Though I wish they were a bit more in the forefront, the delivery on the vocals is awesome. The intensity is there, and house sounds evil as hell. Do I know what Alex is saying? Hell no. Do I care? Hell no, but you can find lyrics. Should you like? Hell yes! For those of you only familiar with remixes, the best track I could give you as a point of reference of this is Dennis Mott's own death metal OC ReMix, CastleVania 2 "Cursed Bloodline". But make no mistake about it, all death metal is not one and the same, so head over to the Minibosses's forums over at TheShizz.org and see if you can pry some details out of house on what artists inspired the guttural rampage of "Riven Dreams".

Ichitootah - The New Ghostbusters 2 "A Violin and a Vacuum Cleaner" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc41/PRCv2-15_Ichitootah_-_AViolinAndAVacuumCleaner.mp3) [The People Remix Competition v2-15]
Nasenmann - The New Ghostbusters 2 "Gathering of the Ancient Noses" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc41/PRCv2-15_Nasenmann_-_Gathering_of_the_Ancient_Noses.mp3) [The People Remix Competition v2-15]
After TO shit on the very brief source material chosen for PRCv2-15, Ichitootah took it upon himself to make a substantially good mix and emerged with the shared victory in the competition with his very well put together orchestral take. Pretty creative stuff that did a lot with a little.
Not to be outdone, Nasenmann had an engaging entry of his own with ambient foundations and loads of little sounds here and there as well as some ethnic percussion and wind instruments. Both genuinely well done entries that would be difficult to judge against each other on anything but subjective terms. Get them both and see what they have to offer.

Jeremy Robson - Neon Genesis Evangelion "Rei IV" (http://animeremix.org/Remix.php?REMIXID=60) [Anime Remix #60]
Oooooh. Sil rhymes with skill, so be sure to check out Sil's (i.e. Jeremy Robson's) gentle orchestral work in this formative Neon Genesis mix. I was in fact waiting for a big swell of some sort within the arrangement here, and indeed the mood started turning darker and more tense around the 2:45 mark, keeping things interesting and taking the track in a slightly different direction while ultimately not varying up the arrangement of the melody itself too drastically. Why are you reading this still? Get out my face and grabz it before you forget. Fans of Jeremy's OC ReMix material won't be disappointed by any means.

Joshua Morse - Double Dragon 3 "J! Groove" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01351) [OC ReMix #1351]
So it is not often that I have to mea culpa on judging votes, but when I first voted on J! Groove, I ended up using the older version of the track released on VGMix, when I couldn't get the submitted version, assuming that they were one and the same, resulting in a NO vote from me. But compared to the original version of J! Groove, the track was incredibly filled out and biasing me with the groove, as is true with all OCR judges. The pizzicato strings, thick beats and Asian-style instrumentation are only some of the strengths awaiting you if you have yet to check this one out. It's great to see Joshua submitting material OC's way again, and great to see him tackling one of the overlooked soundtracks in the Double Dragon series. DD3 in particular has some catchy material that was looking to be spotlighted.

Just Us - "As the World Turns" (http://www.urbanizmmusic.com/music/Urbanizm-JustUs-AstheWorldTurns.mp3) [http://www.urbanizmmusic.com]
Those who enjoyed N00dle's lyrics in the recent Sonic 3 OC ReMix "Memories Frozen in Time" will enjoy the full ensemble of Just Us bringing it here in their latest Urbanizm Music release. Featuring a relaxing e-piano and some claps as the foundation of the track, this is another effort featuring personalized, rapid-fire lyrics delivered with equals amounts of heart & precision. I think the claps could be ditched in favor of something with more texture, but aside from that, get your dose of hip-hop flavor courtesy of DCT and Urbanizm Music's hottest group.

Larsec f/Nina Luna - Comic Bakery "Lunar Bakery" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2666/Larsec%20-%20Comic%20Bakery%20%28Lunar%20Bakery%20-%20Feat.%20Nina%20Luna%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2666]
Lars has been someone I've been hoping to see posted at OC ReMix for a while. Frankly the only formality involved in getting there is Lars actually submitting some of his material. Those of you following the shamelessly but proudly stolen concept that is the OCR Idol contest may have heard an earlier cut of this track in Round 1. Here Larsec is joined by the breathy vocals on Nina Luna who definitely adds a nice touch to the synth rock take on the classic Comic Bakery theme by Martin Galway. The second half takes an unexpected turn as the tempo increases. The execution is nothing that can't be done better by actual live instrumentation, but the effort and arrangement are definitely admirable. It's always good seeing one of the top names in the C64 scene stopping by to showcase his works-in-progress around these parts. Swing by Remix.Kwed.Org to experience the now-completed version.

Makke - Madballs "You Told Me They Were Vitamins Mix" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2664/Makke%20-%20Madballs%20%28You%20Told%20Me%20They%20Were%20V itamins%20Mix%29.mp3) [VGMix2 #4098 / R:K:O #2664]
Man, I've got no idea what the hell's going on. "You told me they were vitamins but you lied." Anything else I could try to add would truly be unnecessary.

Malcos - "Distracting Me" (http://www.urbanizmmusic.com/music/Urbanizm-Malcos-DistractingMe.mp3) [http://www.urbanizmmusic.com]
Stephen Malcolm-Howell throws a new original cut over at Urbanizm with some fairly basic beats, e-piano and a touch of pizzicato strings all providing the instrumentation to compliment some of his best lyrical work yet. The production's a bit muffled, so I'd like to hear a remaster, but damn, I'm still waiting for Stephen to send an OC ReMix with his awesome vocals as part of the package (i.e. a resubmission of "Throw Me a Tiger Uppercut"). Anyone unaware of Malcos's vocals talents better scoop up every Urbanizm track of his, as he's got tons of bona fide R&B style hits you can snag. This one great, so don't procrastinate on educating yourself on the versatility of one of OC's old-school legends.

mDuo13 & OverCoat - Hellsing "Secret Salsa Serenade" (http://animeremix.org/Remix.php?REMIXID=58) [Anime Remix #59]
AWESOME! Salsa that shit DOWN with mDuo13 & OverCoat and this cool-as-hell interpretation of an otherwise macabre and darkly-themed anime, Hellsing. If there's one thing the remix community at large doesn't have enough of, it's salsa. Please keep salsa-ing us foreve, bros. At over 5 minutes the potential was there for the track to get boring, but my salsa bias WILL HAVE NONE OF IT! This is my underdog track here, y'all. If you're wanting something that's not run of the mill, go for the hot & chunky Secret Salsa Serenade, and pass me some enchiladas.

Rexy - Super Metroid "White Bounty" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4100) [VGMix2 #4100]
Bev Wooff follows in the footsteps of other Metroid solo piano pieces like Noir's "Violent Ivory in Lower Norfair" with her own piece, which had a nice bit on anticipation for it at VGMix. White Bounty is what most of us black men are after, but even if you're not of the ebony persuasion and can't find yo'self some ladies...uh...wrong conclusion. In all seriousness, what you've got here is a lengthy yet spirited piece that's a bit sparse at times but also has a nice delicate texture to it. Some of the left-hand activity could be more intricate, but I'm not an authority on that by any means. I couldn't help but feeling that the source material was given a touch of class here that makes it more accessible to the peeps out there. Well worth giving that listen.

Romeo Knight - "Future Shock" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2667/Romeo%20Knight%20-%20Future%20Shock.mp3) [R:K:O #2667]
Moving onto one of the more recent top names in the Commodore remixing scene, here we have an interesting electronic mix that's combined with an almost surf-style electric guitar synth. This one could honestly fit in more of an upbeat racing game context, so I really was feeling the style here. The mix title is almost a bit of a misnomer, as one thinks of upbeat, space style material, most likely characterized but fast-paced straight-up electronica. Quite the unexpected twist here, don't judge a book by it's cover here and instead judge it for yourself. A welcome surprise and another solid hit from Romeo.

Sefiros - Silent Hill 2 "Nightmares" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4102) [VGMix2 #4102]
Bryan turns some initially unintentional-sounding distortion into an integral element of this darkly-themed spin on the already dark Silent Hill series. Some simple drumwork entered the picture about 90 seconds in, and it'll either make or break the piece for most, but stick with it if you feel the flow was broken up. The piece doesn't circle back to that, but rather goes for a spastic burst of distorted synths before settling down into a more melodic note progression. Not simply scary by assaulting you with volume, this one went for a different approach that I could only speculate on. Trying to guess the imagery conveyed here would be pretty pretentious, wouldn't it? Give it a go, and ask the man himself afterward.

Sonic Wanderer - "Noisy Pillars (Euro-4-Sure Mix)" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2656/Sonic%20Wanderer%20-%20Noisy%20Pillars%20%28Euro-4-Sure%20Mix%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2656]
Going for more of a staple European techno sound, Sonic Wanderer has this mix from an original by Jeroen Tel. For a judge like me that's nothing but groove-biased, the potential of the groove is certainly fulfilled here. Around the 1:50 mark, the sounds are briefly beefed out to groove you even more. What more could you need in order to shake yo' ass. Solid stuff from the, who's been making a name for himself on the Commodore 64 scene as well.

TO - Doom 2 "Hells Marshal" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4110) [VGMix2 #4110]
The Orichalcon's always got a spare minute to tackle anything Doom-related. Here's a piano, beat, and distorted synth-driven take on Map 30 of Doom 2, which features some ominous chords, appropriate SFX. The distorted synth lead is bound to turn off a number of people, but hey, Lee's not making the music for the HATERS! I kid, I kid. It's simply your call on what you like. This one's pretty minimalist & straightforward if you're indeed down with that proposition.

tycho - Marathon 1 "New Pacific (Reprise)" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4112) [VGMix2 #4112]
Craig Hardgrove's been pretty busy attempting to arrange most of the Marathon soundtrack. Back in the day Marathon was basically THE computer of the mid-90s, and it definitely doesn't get enough coverage in the scene. As far as the soundtrack goes, I'd say it's almost not even a blip on the radar, which makes it all the more important to see what's up with tycho's take on "New Pacific". As a conservative arrangement, you'll really be feeling the expansive approach Craig took here. Very laid-back and ambient yet beat-driven and funky at the same time, this one very likely won't do you wrong.

X-formZ (Dimmignatt & Floaf) - The Great Giana Sisters "They Are Punks and They Are Back" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4133) [VGMix2 #4133]
One soundtrack I haven't familiarized myself with that I should have is Chris Hülsbeck's Great Giana Sisters C64 score. X-formZ accompanies the SIDtune goodness of the original with some excellent additive guitar work, percussion & synth work. The whole package is actually pretty impressive. Those looking for a fast-paced with lots of momentum need to start this week's downloads with this one right here. The ending is the only downside, as it comes too suddenly, but that's a minor issue for an otherwise rocking arrangement representing the European side of the community.

zykO - Sonic the Hedgehog 1 "marblez in your mouf" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4105) [VGMix2 #4105]
Short and sweet, proud-papa weed lays down the Marble Zone in his gritty guitar style. Derived from an earlier sketch type piece done in a much quieter style, this one expands the ideas much further and gives it the true rearrangement overhaul. If you're familiar with zykO's style, you should know what to expect. This track of his is probably not for beginners, i.e. it's not overly accessible. But if you're not daunted by prospects of encountering the eclectic (referred to by some others as "weird guitar shit"), you'll have no problem eating up weed's latest.

zykO - "Perch" (http://www.zykomusik.com/zykO%20-%20Perch.mp3) [A New Set of Eyes] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8501)
"One more take... Take 2." With an intro reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, zyko drops the first single from his latest album project "A New Set of Eyes" inspired by the birth of his daughter (the cutest baby ever) Eileen Isabelle. I've always been a fan of weed's rock ballads as they're full of power in the performance and emotion in the delivery. It doesn't get more real than the material of the zykomunky here in this excellently put together piece marking a watershed moment in weed's life. What a cute baby!

Yeesh. Lot of tracks, bros (and sisters). Pray for me to catch up soon on everything, this stuff included. Lemme know what ya like.

 Love your work, Larry. Your choice of wording is almost.. poetic. :)

Post comments preferably through Ormgas.com! (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11102)

Covering the relevant releases from the month o' May continues with the goods from the week ending May 21st. You've got a full plate in front of ya, so make with the clicky clickly.

Shuichiro "Shu" Nakazawa & Zuntata - Landing Gear "S.L.M.J." (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [ZUNTATA LIVE 1998 Güten Talk from the Earth AST]
I'm telling you, that sounds like a Daffy Duck voice sample in there. I'll bet you almost anything that I'm right. In any case, genius is the word of the day here with this cut off Zuntata's 1998 live concert album, and the winning track from Song of the Week, Week #24. Ripped from a video file of the concert, this is an absolute must-have for anyone that prefers their music strange, energetic, intelligent, and most importantly Japanese. It also makes a good running track if you plan on running pretty damn fast. Needless to say, I can run fast. Of course, I'm no JigginJonT though.

Tenmon - "Summer Clouds" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Mizu no Kakera: Once Summer of Islet-Origin (Game Rip)]
A brief but dense instrumental piece, loads of stuff including piano, acoustic guitar, tambourine, some light wind instrumentation, light drums, and so forth layer together nicely to present an nicely paced and upbeat setting. With school wrapping up and the summer in swing, this logically picked up 2nd place for Song of the Week, Week #24.

Asuka Sakai - "Ark Ver.1" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Klonoa of the Wind 2 ~Something Forgotten Wished by the World~ OST]
I've got no idea what Klonoa of the Wind is, but if you're interested in hearing a track that's potentially mistakable for something from Phantasy Star Online done by one of the individuals responsible for the Katamari Damacy soundtrack (i.e. the loungy Engrished love song "Que Sera Sera"), then the 3rd place finisher for Song of the Week, Week #24 has got your name all over it.

PICK OF THE WEEK: Binster - "Closed-Eyed Astronomy" (http://www.abandonedsheep.com/MUSIC/Binster%20-%20Closed-Eyed%20Astronomy.mp3) [http://www.abandonedsheep.com] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8551)
Everything Martin makes is gold, so whenever he makes any type of release, be it VG-related or not, you ought give it a try. Mr. Binfield's had some prior sweetness with colleague RickBRF and their Fire Escape Mix of Trademark's "Burn" (http://www.brfuk.com/rundll/burn). Sampling Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", this one tricks out that track with some stylish synths and hot beats. Beautiful and loopable, this is one you can easily show off to an 80s fan just to see if they'll bite. Induce the sunshine condition in others today.

Blue Magic - Chrono Cross "A Warrior's Path" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4067) [VGMix2 #4067]
Technically not a very unique name for a remix, but well-done nonetheless. The strings were a bit plain and inhuman sounding, but the atmosphere was pretty good. Damon's come a long way since his earlier days in the community. Noting the revisions he's done to his mixes between posting them to VGMix and subbing them to OCR, I'm confident that this one has what it takes to be Blue Magic's third mix. Needs a bit of refinement, but certainly worth checking out in its current form.

chthonic - Zelda: Link's Awakening & Megaman 2 "It's My Turn to Dream" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4141) [VGMix2 #4141]
Everyone and their mother nowadays has been doing "Ballad of the Windfish" mixes, so much so that in this day and age of VG remixing, it's joined the ranks of the overmixed. But Ben decides to join the party with an electronic-based take on it that's a little different from the rest. Some of the synths and sounds are plain and generic, but the arrangement's got spirit, including MM2's "Metalman Stage" thrown in there for good measure, as well as some Middle Eastern motifs featuring some brief Zelda 3 & Zelda 64: The Ocarina of Time references. If you feel like dancing...

Daniel Baranowsky - "Schema of a Lunar Creation" [http://www.therighteous.net]
One of the perks of being on the panel is hearing the musical brainfarts of other judges when they have the inclination to cook stuff up. Here, Dan plays things incredibly abstract (also known at "What the FUCK?"), and truly shows off the outer limits of his range. It's not particularly musical, but then again neither are Top 40 radio stations. Beg Dan for a copy and see if you can handle the noise.

DJ Orange - Final Fantasy 5 "Harvest Hoedown" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01352) [VGMix2 #3601 / OC ReMix #1352]
There aren't too many cover-style mixes that I'd end up voting in favor of, simply because a conservative approach ends up not expanding the instrumentation of the source material enough, but Geoff's take here did the trick. I heard from some other people that they weren't feeling it. Grrr, they don't know jack! Most of the groups Geoff rattled off as influences went right over my head, but I'll tell you, I likes me some organ, I likes me some woodwinds, and I likes me some Orange. Actually, this reminded me a bit of A Clockwork Orange for no specific reason, particularly the intro. Well worth downloading for the offbeat flavor.

Geoffrey Taucer, The Prophet of Mephisto & PriZm - Xenogears "A Star Freezes Over" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3399) [VGMix2 #3399]
Indeed, this sounds like much like a slightly rougher version of The OneUps deciding to intermingle Xenogears with The Eagles' "Desperado" and actually would have made a good fit on OneUp Studios' Xenogears Light album with a bit more polish. The trio's collaborative efforts have certainly paid off with a very fresh spin on Mitsuda's "Gathering Stars in the Night Sky" that may need a glossier finish so-to-speak, but otherwise presents itself well. The concept certainly gets to the heart of what VGM arranging is all about, with some stylish mainstream material thrown into the mix as well.

goat - Final Fantasy 4 "The Sky Was Never A Limit" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01353) [VGMix2 #3462 / OC ReMix #1353]
I haven't heard Chris go for a more orchestral-based remix since his Kid Icarus-inspired "Slice of Heaven", so this was a welcome change of pace from the rock I'm normally used to. Even goats look for love, and what better way to woo the lady goats that with a rock ballad, this one done to FF4's version of the Prelude. The orchestration was a weak point in terms of realism at times, but the performance there is nonetheless well done and the arrangement was some of the nicest I've ever heard when it comes to FF and is sure to make the bitch in you cry for either your girlfriend or (you lonely ones) for your attractive female friend who loves you like a brother. If you've heard many of goat's Dwelling of Duels entries, you know that Chris is a guy who has no problem making a very lengthy track. Clocking in at nearly 7 minutes, you'll never get bored with it. It may not be Valentine's Day anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't stop wooing, playboy. Let a goat help you find love. This is way better than a Hallmark card.

Joker - Resident Evil 2 "The Corporate Office" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4145) [VGMix2 #4145]
Tackling RE2's "Safe Place", David offers this lo-fi style piece that retains the spooky atmosphere of the original while adding more depth to the instrumentation. The production sounds a bit rough, which may have been purposeful in creating a haunting feel, but tends to only mud the track. The instrumentation as well is fairly minimalist, but it works well for this type of style where the mood is the focus. The drums felt a bit out of place, but the strings, wind SFX, and piano were right at home here. It could use a great deal more sharpness, but it's certainly one to check if you're a Res Evil fan. Joker's one to pay attention to in the future as his skills continue to develop.

Ichitootah - "The Shoguns Jukebox" (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC21/ORC21_Ichitootah_-_The_Shoguns_Jukebox.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 21]
Sadorf - "Pretzel's Challenge" (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC21/ORC21_Sadorf_-_Pretzels_Challenge.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 21]
This special edition of ORC featured remixes of an older original piece by djpretzel, "A Challenge to the Shogunate", with Ichi and Sadorf sharing the victory. Both pieces sounded more in the WIP stage of things, but you can check out both in order to hear the two square off as Ichi brings an synthetic ethnic flavor while Sadorf trances the source material up, both prominently featuring piano. The co-winners will be selecting the material for ORC22.

Ichitootah - Bermuda Syndrome & Golden Sun "Ichitootrance" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc42/PRCv2-16_Ichitootah_-_Ichitootrance.mp3) [The People's Remix Competition v2-16]
TO - Bermuda Syndrome & Golden Sun "Uranian Ballet" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc42/PRCv2-16_TO_-_Uranian_Ballet.mp3) [The People Remix Competition v2-16]
As PRC head Kamoh called it, "too many ties". TO & Ichitootah bang heads with their co-winning tracks covering , with Ichi doing a piano and vox accentuated trance mix, while TO went for a slower, more refined orchestral piece. Too bad I didn't vote on this one to break up the tie. If y'all ever get into a tie over there at PRC, ask me to make a tie-break vote. I'LL fix things for ya. The Larry's Remix Competition. I like the sound of that.

Krispy - Halo 1 & Halo 2 "Insurrection" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01354) [VGMix2 #3700 / OC ReMix #1354]
Kris hasn't been around for way too long in terms of having material at OCR, so after getting fairly close with some DKC Aquatic Ambience material a little while back, the Halo touch was what was needed to get Krispy back in the spotlight. I personally felt that the arrangement here didn't distinguish itself enough from the source, but there are nonetheless some exquisite Middle Eastern motifs in the mix here. Those of you out there in the community who are conservative and love arrangements that "stay true to the original" will be all about it here with a sweet rendition of one of the newer tracks in VGM that frequently gets mixed, the Halo theme.

Nixdorux - Super CastleVania 4 "Lord Dracula" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4176) [VGMix2 #4176]
Nicolas goes for an ambient orchestral first half in this moody CV4 mix, before switching gears to strings and an organ on cameo in this track representing the entrance of the ambiguous & complex Lord Dracula. Quite the interesting representation of Dracula, as it doesn't go for a cliche attempt at sounding sinister and evil, rather Nix takes a more refined stab at the source material. Soild work per the usual from Nicolas, who shows a good deal of range within the orchestral genre for those of you familiar with his body of work.

The OneUps - Secret of Mana "Secret of the Forest" (http://www.oneupstudios.com/music/oum/TheOneUps-SecretoftheForest.wmv) [http://www.oneupstudios.com/oum.php] - Feedback (http://boards.oneupstudios.com/showthread.php?t=2010)
Perfomed live at Scarapino's as part of their most recent jazz set (http://boards.oneupstudios.com/showthread.php?t=1759), here's a rare glimpse of the The OneUps in their element as Mustin and crew make the push to get the groups name out there and expose Joe Blow & Jane Q. Public to the creative wonders and booty shaking fun of video game music. This one is quite a hefty download for those of you of the dial-up persuasion (78.41MB), but I scored this vid along with others provided by Jessperk anyway, because you know you expect some quality arrangement highlighted by improved solos and great energy. Since these guys aim to make it big, be sure you can say you supported them first by checking out these performances.

OverCoat - Tales of Phantasia "Payne's Gray Forest" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4137) [VGMix2 #4137]
Quite the interesting opening here in Scott Porter's latest mix, 59 seconds of off-kilter ambience that you're either going to love or hate. I personally found it very relaxing, though I'm biased being a big proponent of OverCoat's style. Some wind instruments and beats joined in a minute into the track to help establish the pacing and demeanor of the mix, typical of most of Scott's ambient, groove-based offerings. It's murky. It's eerie. It's got a nice unique atmosphere. That's OverCoat.

Quinn Fox - "The Iron Leaf" (http://www.quinn.50g.com/theironleaf.mp3) [Fitz Warine] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8611)
Check out Quinn's familiar style with some acoustic guitar sampling, piano and electro-kwakery at the forefront with this original from his in progress album Fitz Warine. The last section is a bit cluttered, but this is very cool stuff for those of you familiar with Quinn's OCR & VGMix collection of mixes. It's not often that you get to hear Quinn release original material, so the opportunity is yours to see what Quinn can do if you're not familiar with his recent work or his originals. When he's gonna host "Dayspender" again, dammit? I cry now.

Richter - StarFox 1 "Xector Point" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4157) [The People's Remix Competition v2-11 / VGMix2 #4157]
Pretty straightforward adaptation of Sector X into basic trance along with some spacey overtones. The sounds were fairly generic and thin, and the atmosphere was sparse, but the ideas had promise. The mix was only turned out in a few days for the duration of the PRCv2-11 mixing phase, so it's too bad Matt won't dedicate more time to making improvements on it. There's not nearly enough StarFox coverage out there, though I'm aware of someone else working on something. I keep my mouth shut.

Roetaka - Megaman 2 "A Warmer Farewell" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4129) [VGMix2 #4129]
The atmosphere is a bit muddy and some of the chords sounded odd, but this was a pretty interesting arrangement of MM2's ending theme. Alex definitely put together an unorthodox approach in arranging it, so much so that I can honestly say it'll both put some people off and leave others struggling to make the connection to the source at times. The track dragged on a little bit throughout the last minute on account of the backing beats simply repeating themselves, but the assessment of how well the arrangement here was pulled off is not necessarily mine to make. Alex is certainly a non-OC ReMixer to keep your eye on as he's been improving his skills gradually.

Roetaka - "Calling Your Long Lost Heart" (http://www.remix.herograw.com/LordMaestro/Calling%20your%20long%20lost%20Heart.mp3) [http://www.soundclick.com/roetaka] - Feedback (http://vgmix.com/topic_view.php?topic_id=8615)
Alex goes for a nice hybrid approach filled out with backing strings, piano, and a steel stringed guitar in an original piece that's pretty cluttered on the production side but is nonetheless fairly solid compositionally. Roetaka has a tendency to make pieces that would sound better if they were condensed, but a good job is done creating dynamic contrast and flow overall. Like I say, he's one to watch on the developmental level, and focusing on original compositions is one way to steadily improve an artist's hand as it translates to the remixing scene. I think you'll like a good deal of the ideas here, fair listeners.

Star Salzman - Final Fantasy 6 "Shut the Fuck Up" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4136) [VGMix2 #4136]
Star Salzman's not to be fucked with with this ROFL rap remix of FF6's Opening Theme with some hot vocal processing and over-the-top lyrics, as Star does his best impressions of a number of mainstream rap styles (Bone Thugs 'N Harmony, NICE)! Hahahaha! "Star Salzman...comin' at ya!" Icy Hot Stuntaz beware. Ain't much arrangement substance here, but cruise with this one blarin' out yo lowrider and tell them bitches to SHUT THE FUCK UP!

And with that, it's time to shut the fuck up on this batch of stuff. As per the usual summer bidniss, please feel free to leave comments, and I hope you enjoy.

(etc)
Spell my name right! :P (LT: Booyah!)

And... yay, glad to see the status concerning the VG Freq shows here. I don't know whether to push you into uploading the 3 finished edits (it's been, what, 2 months since #56 went online?) or wait a bit longer (because good things come to those who wait), but whichever comes out of it I am of high anticipation of the files.

Agreed; it's got my eyes scarred for weeks!

I haven't registered over there yet but i'll run through a few of his pointers right here.

Sometimes they have a show called VG Frequency, that has the world's worst DJ
No way man, if you want the world's worst DJ you should see some local college radio. Some of the DJs at my uni stutter like Hell, which is something that Larry often comes around with his interviews. ;)

and he doesn't play much good crapThat's because crap isn't supposed to be good in the first place. Pwnt.

and most of it is crap that isn't video game music
He's not meant to play video game music; he's here to play video game remixes if mostly anything. And even if you do edit it to say "most of it is crap that isn't video game re-arranements" I will prove it to you by going through a random show. VG Frequency #60.99 (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.10896) had a lot of tracks played, yet only 9 of which weren't relating to videogames. Point proven again, considering you thought that 80% of the tracks played aren't VG music?

i'll shaddap and see what the mob wants with him :P

Now go away, nothing to see here and check out the torrents (www.studio-compyfox.de/torrent).

EDIT:
Did InkBot on that particular board even do some researches? Almost all shows were live at WMRE, and ORMGAS plays only what was recorded. Hell I should offer ORMGAS my Crimson Moon shows, maybe then he's also like "GAWD KILL THAT GERMAN F*CKER!"

One thing I can say about that:
"InkBot... shut the hell up, and do it better or stop bitching and listening to ORMGAS/OCR - noone forces you to do so". But I have a feeling that he secretly likes videogame remixes after all. But he wouldn't say that officially. That's called "ego forming".

What I like about that guy is that it was clear he spent alot of time putting together information to bring against Mr.Oji's credibility as a DJ. He had plenty of examples and it was a well articulated argument....NOT!

He had no examples of what he was talking about, and further more it seemed as though the same guy throwing the flames was also a guy who couldnt go a sentance without using the word "crap". Sure I wondered sometimes when hearing the show if Liontamer was drunk or not, but he is not in the category of bad DJ's, not at all.

But I'm proud to say that my life's goal of getting a remix past the judges panel has truly arrived. That's right, the fine judging lads over at OverLooked ReMiX have enthusiastically passed the superlative Gran Turismo (Japanese Soundtrack) mix "Toyota Disco" (http://olremix.paletteswap.com/remixes/?id=99), and I encourage you, the unwashed masses, to register there (http://olremix.paletteswap.com/phpBB/profile.php?mode=register) and VOTE Toyota Disco to da top o' da OverLooked ReMiX charts! LOL. You know how they say you can judge controller size with the distance between your thumb tip and forefinger? Well, someone can hit an octave with those fingers. Cha-ching.

It isn't the size of the controller, it's how you use it.

Considering that I'm about 6 weeks back on summer Pimp Sections, I've need to get back on the horse for a while now. I remember a year ago when it took a full day to write these damn things. I guess judging's paid off this time around, since I only spent a few hours going through everything below. Let's cover the material from the week of May 22nd to May 28th.

ABG - Chrono Trigger "Children of Time" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4238) [VGMix2 #4238]
Shawn Overn brings it this week with a nearly 10-minute long trance affair that screams authenticity to the genre. To me, the sound was too swamped when everything came into play, but when I say the sound is authentic to the genre, that isn't a polite way of saying it's generic. The homage to Robert Miles' "Children" was apparent here in this nice take on the often-mixed Zeal theme "Corridors of Time" that your inner Zeality (http://www.chronocompendium.com) will love. I wouldn't mind hearing Shawn tackle some more material that's outside of the FF/CT arena, but he nonetheless puts out some solid stuff. While I love the superlative progressive trance pieces I've encountered in the community, Shawn can really take it to you in more of a "mainstream" style. It grooves, it morphs, it develops. Perfect for the club, so check it out.

AkumajoBelmont - Jazz Jackrabbit 1 "Have You Ever? (Down in Medivo)" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4189) [VGMix2 #4189]
The voice intro here is so awesome, you can help but keep listening in. This is some cool spacey electronic material, so don't let the source game fool you. I thought the drums were the weak link here, very plain jane and not thick at all, but they're at least serviceable. This one's relatively short at 2:48, but the development is substantial enough where you feel that a lot has taken place in this Medivo World remix. The vocal section introing the mix repeated at the end which was a little bit of a letdown (despite the obvious usage of it to give the mix a cyclical close), but this was some solid material nevertheless. I'd love to see this tweaked some more before it hit the judges panel, but Robbie's nonetheless very dependable with this nice non-jazzy spin on the only video game jackrabbit I've ever heard of.

E-Bison - Chrono Trigger "Time Management" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4191) [VGMix2 #4191]
I normally don't spotlight re-releases of older material, but Eliot's not very active in the scene, so any release from him is something to look forward to. As one of the few remixers on OCR to have what's considered a legendary mix for their only remix on the site, this complete version of the classic "Time Management" now-available at VGMix is required downloading. Eliot complained that the full version of this mix couldn't be submitted due to the "stupid" no-MP3s-greater-than-6MB rule. Even some of us on the judges panel don't agree with the rule, but if anything it helps establish VGMix as the place to be in order to discover legendary but lengthy tracks that couldn't see the light of day on OCR due to their size. If you've heard the OCR version of Time Management, the extended version is literally all that and more. You won't find yourself disappointed by any of the new material found here.

Fatty Acid & Sephfire - Final Fantasy 10-2 "Under a New Moon" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01357/) [VGMix2 #3324 (removed) / OC ReMix #1357]
I remembering hearing this one on VGMix and I'll reveal that I done a bad thing by reporting it to the admins as a remix of an already posted mix. Before y'all kill me, it was bound to happen anyway, but one thing I knew as I grabbed the mix was that it would be an undiscovered gem by the time it hit OCR due to my dutiful/evil machinations. [I grin like a cat here.] There really isn't another mix here in the Pimp Section this week that allows you to chillax, so if you're really looking for something light and downtempo, Joe & Dan's collab is where u be at and stuff, receiving the plug from zyko as being great music to slow down the speed of life with. Quite the unique piece as far as OCR's body of material is concerned, it's almost like SimCity music only a bit more active.

housethegrate - Final Fantasy 6 "Seized with Fury" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01356/) [VGMix2 #3932 / OC ReMix #1356]
Alexander Liss has been on my radar for quite some time due to his consistently strong DoD work, so I was glad he bit the bullet and submitted the superlative "Seized with Fury". I pretty much said my piece on this one in my judging decision, but with house and his brother Ashane both subbing quality material to the site, it'll hopefully mean that more will be coming in the future. We're not so bad here, are we? In any case, "The Decisive Battle" & "The Fierce Battle" are given the rawk/rok pimpage from house, further establishing the Decisive Battle as one of the new generation of heavily mixed tracks. Alex doesn't do you dirty, including a lil' baby piece of CastleVania's "Vampire Killer" for those of you perceptive enough to catch it. Do the right thing with "Seized with Fury" and take it 2 da house! (God, that was lame.)

Infamous - Xenophobe "There Are Aliens in My Closet and They Won't Leave" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4121) [VGMix2 #4121]
Chris hooks it up on the Commodore 64 side with some tight electronica from yet another C64 game with cool music that I've never heard of. Infamous's production has never been poor, but I felt there was some measure of improvement here that made this mix enjoyable. The beats, buzzing synths, and sustained strings were mixed pretty damn well, and I especially loved the bassline. 3 solid minutes of well-developed electronic flavor that'll keep ya moving. Don't let the obscurity of the game for most of you make you pass this up, as Infy's quite the capable mixer representing the European side of the community.

jdproject - "The Way I Feel" (http://www.web-media.info/thewayifeel.m3u) [http://www.joedarwish.net]
Joe Darwish, another OC ReMixer with one legendary mix to his name, is someone you'd know about on the original side if you've been frequenting his website. Joe's primary expertise is in making mainstream guitar-driven pop, so if you're interested in hearing him slow things down as compared to "The Ken Song", this is where you need to be. Joe could easily pass for a mainstream pop act, which is exactly what he'd like to be in a perfect world. The mixing is pretty good, especially since Joe's been handling it himself. If this guy had money thrown behind him, he'd be pretty damn dangerous, and I can tell you that's not an exaggeration (hey, I can't listen to non-mainstream music ALL the time). Best of luck to jdproject as he continues work on his second EP. I'd love to see him make it in the big-time and sell out for the $$$. We don't deserve to hide him.

Kevin Stephens - Xenogears "Knight of Fire" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3023) [Splendid Performance: Audition 1 / VGMix2 #3023]
Kevin continues to impress on the arrangement side with this Xeno mix featuring the piano doing its thing. The transitions at 1:08 was way too sudden, so you don't really get much breathing room or notice before ideas change, but there weren't any other sweeping changes going on here, so you may be thrown for a loop at 1:08 while listening to this, but you'll just as soon regain your footing as you continue onward. The human touch on Kevin's pieces is one that others have criticized in the past, so those among you who don't like the velocities here may have qualms, but I was all about it, 'bout it here. I won't lie, as I don't quite get where the imagery of a Knight of Fire comes into play here, but that's a relatively insignificant part of the picture. I always look forward to Kevin's work. Have you downloaded this yet...?

mellogear - SimCity 3000 "Sim Shitty (in-stereo)" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4200) [VGMix2 #4200]
Haven't heard a damn thing in a while from Jon Delvaux, so you take the mello style and mix it with a underappreciated favorite like SimCity and you get some dope results. Hell, for a groove-biased gentleman such as myself, I don't really mind that this is mostly beat kwak. No matter what, you'll be nodding your head, even during some of the freestyle work thrown in from 2:08 to 2:50. And just to point out, the "(in-stereo)" portion of the title is far from a simple redundancy. Can you handle the drastic panning effects thrown your way fron 3:33 until the end? There's only one way to find out, isn't there?

mv - "Star Wars KWAK" (http://mv.vgmix.com/tempshit/mv_-_starwars_kwak_v2.mp3) [http://mv.vgmix.com]
Xavier drops a mere 2 hours of work making some brief but nice mixage of some John Williams Star Wars material. If Star Wars gets ya off, you'll only need 1 minute and 11 seconds when mv's done with ya. Cave in and get this ear candy. I'd tell ya what particular track this movie mix tackled by name, but hey, I don't speak dork.

Ork Estral - "Rotating Room of Invisible Cats and Toking Centipedes" (http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/nigelsimmons2/RotatingRoomOfInvisibleCatsAndTokingCentipedes.mp3 ) [http://nigel.has.it]
When I think of avant garde style orchestral artists (and I'm PROBABLY grossly misusing the term avant garde, but WORK WITH ME), Shnabubula tends to come to mind, but as far as I'm concerned Ork Estral, otherwise known around these parts as Nigel Simmons was the innovator. I've always been insanely biased towards Nigel's original work as opposed to his remixes, because Ork really cuts loose on some of his original stuff, and Rotating Room was no exception. If you love off-kilter orchestration that would fit right at home in a professional movie score, download this one immediately. This original composition never stays in the same place for more than a fraction of a second.

Patrick Wagstaff - Donkey Kong Land 1 "Funky City" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4193) [VGMix2 #4193]
The groove is too plain, so it's not gonna kick your ass, but Pat gets a little light-hearted with Gameboy mix of muzak from the character I had the privilege of impersonating for Kong in Concert. The arrangement took an unsettling turn via a key change around the 2 minute mark, but things soon got back into the swing of things. Nothing great here, but still worth checking out, as Patrick's a name to watch on the development side, as he's not afraid to try any and all ideas with his mixes. He really needs to step it up with synth design and production here, but hey, it's better than I can do, eh?

Rexy & KyleJCrb - Dragon Warrior 4 "Requiem of a Warrior" (Version 2.0) (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4195) [VGMix2 #4195]
Talking to Kyle on VG Frequency #60, the scene's most knowledgable rock enthusiast could only crap on his own guitar performance the first time around when this mix was entered in the Dwelling of Duels Dragon Warrior competition. While serviceable the last time around, here, Kyle's performance better accentuated the material compositionally, though for some reason the recording on it sounded a lot more lo-fi and distant this time, so it doesn't really sit well amidst the synth orchestration. Meanwhile, the synth strings could use some further work on the note-to-note movement to evoke more realism. Aside from those particular issues, you get to hear some interesting stuff as the track really does come across as one of those rock/orchestral hybrid pieces, not in the sense of most of the scene material you've heard, but more analogous to classical music being used to accentuate a rock piece. You also get to hear Bev with some brief vocal work near the end, so there's a lot to check out in one sitting. Needs some real refinement with the synth strings in particular, but this was some ambitious stuff from Bev alongside Kyle, who I also hope to hear more from in terms on actually contributing to future arrangements.

tefnek - Contra 1 "Snow Field" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01355/) [OC ReMix #1355]
Jack Kirkpatrick surprised me with this one in my inbox, which allowed me to play it for VG Frequency #50, and the world was beautiful at that moment in time, for who among you can lay down the big beats like this man? Transposing the original Contra material to big beat did kind of take the "tenseness" out of the source material, as you're not gonna listen to this and feel like part of a crack commando squad set out to destroy alien forces with hot ass weapons and a spray power-up. But in fact, you're still on the squad. No, you're not gonna run and jump around everywhere. But you're still gonna dodge every laser and bullet fired at you. Cuz with these beats, you're gonna do it, and you're gonna do it while struttin'.

zircon - "Hourglass" [Impulse Prime]
PICK OF THE WEEK: zircon - "Studies in Ether" [Impulse Prime]
Fellow OC Judge Andy Aversa dropped two more releases from Impulse Prime my way with the awesome beat-driven "Hourglass" as well as the more ambient "Studies in Ether". If you're any fan of felloe big beat ReMixer tefnek, "Hourglass" will keep your music collection some excellent company featuring some impressive synth design, some meaty production, and enchanting female vox sampling courtesy of the industry staple vocal library Symphony of Voices. Meanwhile, continue your muzak education this week with the very enveloping "Studies in Ether" featuring some more quality beatwork, modulating synths and beautiful ambient pads, all coming together to provide my personal favorite track on the album. Studies is a track you can really put on in the background that relaxes you yet remains active enough to keep your mind engaged. Hell, I'd love to drive down a long, deserted stretch highway at night with this song providing the soundtrack. Impulse Prime continues to impress me, so head over to Zircon Studios (http://www.zirconstudios.com) to get more information on the upcoming album.

zykO - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Mysticism 2000" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4227) [zykO zone / VGMix2 #4227]
weed absolutely warps the Mystic Cave Zone with this heavily distorted Sonic 2 mix. It even features some Oil Ocean references. Part of what I like about zyko's shit is that he's not afraid to absolutely cut loose and not give two shits about mixing or production when his primary concern is putting out the music as a sheer form of expression. If you're looking for refinement, weed might say "go fuck yourself", as a full minute of this was nothing but the crunchiest of crunchy guitar work. But stick around for things; 5 years in the making, this isn't meant to please ya aurally, but it's much like the car accident where you can't look away. Gotta love that plucky finish too.

And with that, I bid you adieu for now. ‘Till next time (whenever that is).

Eh, yeah, I think that needs some explaining. ^^ What I attempted to do here was string texturing, where I had one patch panned half-left and a different patch half-right. I basically performed separate takes of the progressions on both sides before taking advantage of the volume wheel to soften out some of the end releases and generate some softer attacks on some of the opening section movements.

I know this isn't a critique thread, but I thought it was worth mentioning :P

Let’s continue covering the summer stuffs from May 29th to June 4th (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11402), for June is the month of the junebug...

Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura & Ryota Furuya - "Freeze" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Tales of Phantasia (SNES Game Rip)]
Here's a relaxing track from the ever-so-often remixed Tales of Phantasia, taking 1st Place for Song of the Week, Week #25. A bit, well, gimpish, compared to how we get spoiled with the bells and whistles of pristine redbook audio, but the composition here is good. In fact, we even have what amounts to a rip of this one hosted on OCR from back in the day courtesy of Spongemop! Some sleigh bells give off the added touch to really make "Freeze" a winner with the GamingForce Audio crowd voting in this week's competition.

Falcom Sound Team JDK - "Legend of the Lone Wolves" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Music from Brandish 3: Spirit of Balcan]
I'm usually not a huge fan of the overly synthy material from Sound Team JDK, but I felt like they delivered in a big way with the 2nd Place finisher for Song of the Week, Week #25. This ones takes exactly 2 minutes to get through the more slowly-paced intro before it kicks into a nice space-shooter genre theme with what I think are obvious Megaman-style overtones. Nice and catchy stuff that I feel could make excellent ReMix material if someone skilled ever felt compelled to give it a look.

Jack Wall & The Northwest Sinfonia Orchestra - "Theme from Amateria" (http://oc.ormgas.com/banner.php?28) [Myst III: Exile the Soundtrack]
Rounding out the top tracks for Song of the Week, Week #25 is this excellent downbeat piece from Myst III that doesn't sound anything like typical orchestral fare in the slightest. This one is short and sweet, more the length of a cutscene rather than something that sounds loopable, and the word of the day here is "ambient." The imagery here seems obviously that of a port, what with all the clanging involved. Of course I'm probably horribly wrong (and y'all will let me know I'm sure), but I'd guess that this isn't just any port involved, it's a SPOOOKY port. Maybe it's just me, but I got the imagery of slowly arriving toward a port in extremely gray, foggy weather. You download. You listen. You see what it does for you.

Adam Dachis - Final Fantasy 6 "Little Painter Girl" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01358/) [OC ReMix #1358]
Adam encourages you fine folks to march to your own beat with this vibrant, quaint mix of "Relm" from FF6, which is a game that clearly never gets enough attention. The first submission of this one was rejected by the panel over a year ago, before I joined, so I unfortunately never got to hear how this version compares to its predecessor. But aside from the lil' note flubbery action going on at 1:38 (which some of the peeps love regardless), everything is upbeat and fun with the light orchestral ensemble piece that you can easily pass on to someone who likes orchestral music and trick them into enjoying the otherwise classless and tasteless brand of music that we collectively get off on: video game music. Do right by Dachis's debut and play this for your mom. She'll think you're a fine young lad if you do. Then you can go out and drink and she'll say to herself "My boy can't be bad at all if he listens to something adorable like this." And now that I've fulfilled my Wingless-jabber quotient for this week...

Alexander Prievert - Xenogears "BMR2 Traumsterben" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4262) [VGMix2 #4262]
This sequel to Alex's well-known "Broken Mirror's Reflection" warps the hell out of the first mix. Imagine the first one with a lot more distortion and beats and you probably still would properly expect what's coming your way if you check this out. A lot of you will feel this one is needlessly complicated for the first few minutes, but you get something more anchored to the ground around the 2 1/2 minute mark, so if you feel you can't handle the first few minutes, the second half is there to cradle you in its proverbial arms for a minute before spinning you around on your head for the final minute. Nothing hot here, but it's got shock value that's for sure.

Bladiator - Final Fantasy 8 "Moon over Rinoa" (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/ff/ff8/sounds/mp3/MoonOverRinoa(Bladiator).mp3) [VGMix2 #4078 / Splendid Performance: On the Keys]
For fans of Karl's previous piano waltz remix Super Mario World "Grand Valse Mario", you get more of the same goodness here with “Moon over Rinoa” which applies some waltzy touches to "Julia" before moving into some richer-sounding territory and circling back into the whimsical waltzy schmaltzy. Not really groundbreaking or anything, considering past work using the same idea, but now the FF fans have something from Blad to sink their grubby little paws into. I'd also like to point out how I didn't care much for the FF8 soundtrack, just to rub it in GrayLightning's face.

Blue Magic - Dark Cloud 1 "Moon Dust" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01359/) [OC ReMix #1359]
Damon Campbell hooked it up this week with his second OC ReMix from the criminally undermixed Dark Cloud soundtrack and the results were pretty strong. Aside from what I dubbed a wonky (yep) string sample that's in stark contrast to the rest of the track, Damon nonetheless wove together some beautiful, mesmerizing ambient textures and a downbeat groove that ties up the spirit and leaves it gazing at the stars. (Ya like that? Of course you do.) Not many mixes pull off the use of a guitar synth nicely, and I loved the belltone-ish sounds and the surrounding use of panning effects to create a wider atmosphere. That string'll do ya wrong, but for all of you who haven't heard the source tune, that lone fakey string is a direct homage to "Ocean and Moon" from Dark Cloud and does in fact pay homage to the original material involved. Solid work here, so I'm looking forward to Damon recapturing the blue magic in his future works.

Blue Magic - Sonic & Knuckles "Project Blue" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4514) [VGMix2 #4154]
Damon Campbell's back with another laid-back style of arrangement with "Project Blue" featuring some bird SFX going on throughout the entire track. If that's not great incentive to DL a track, I dunno what is. This one was held back to me by some fairly generic synths, most notably the Ari Asulin slap bass of extreme fakery and discomfort. The track somewhat has an identity crisis, as the slap bass and occasionally the loud percussion kill off the potential for chillaxation. Sample realism's not high, and the composition doesn't really seem to go much of anywhere. But with some significant reworking, this could be some stronger work. Blue's one to keep an eye on with VGMix releases in his quest to get a 3rd mix posted to OCR.

Darangen - Final Fantasy 6 "Deadly Promises" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01360/) [Dwelling of Duels: Free Month (March 2005) / VGMix2 #3866 / OC ReMix #1360]
Let me preface this one by saying that I hate "Terra." I think it's a crappy theme, and I won't lie when I say that most of the problem of it lies with it being so overmixed, not to mention creamed on by the smelly masses, who all love FF6 with no measure of objectivity. But when I first heard this one, I had to give it up to Michael Boyd who managed to take Terra's theme and create some genuine gold out of it. Jeremy Soule did a great job with "Squaresoft Variation", but I'd rather go for a piece like this which really does the interpretive route much better than everything else Terra on the site. Mike managed to adapt a very old original piece of his to click nicely with the source material here, and the guitar, drumkit and vox come together near-perfectly. This one competes with his previous OC ReMix, Final Fantasy "Warriors of Light", for what I personally think it his best work. This guy's like Ailsean 2005, not that it was anything done on purpose. Nonetheless, I give Mike some big props. No reason to pass this one up whatsoever.

Das Karl Werk Projekt - The Human Race "Melodie Eine" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2670/Das%20Karl%20Werk%20Projekt%20-%20The%20Human%20Race%20%28Melodie%20Eine%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2670]
DHS of the SoundWavers first turned me onto the Human Race soundtrack so I'm looking forward to his own Human Race mix finally seeing the light of day on OCR. In the meantime, here's another relatively conservative but nevertheless expansive take on some of Rob Hubbard's source material in this electronica mix that's fairing pretty well among Remix.Kwed.Org's fans. The sounds are straight electronic until a lushly-used piano enters the fray around the 3 minute mark, taking center stage over the course of the rest of the track and providing a finish that'll leave you saying "piano me some more!" Ok, maybe not, but a man can dream. Nothing earthshattering/groundbreaking here, but at the same time "good werk" from Das Karl Werk Project that puts their name on my radar.

Depeche Mode f/tefnek - "I Feel Loved (tefnek Remix)" (http://www.tefnek.com/music/remixes/depeche_mode_-_i_feel_loved_(tefnek_remix).mp3) [http://www.tefnek.com]
Jack Kirkpatrick takes an approach I'd yet to hear from him, remixing some mainstream a capella lyrics with his own material. I feel like the synths used here didn't stand out as unique, and I would have loved to have heard the lyrics a lot more prominently, but the beats are still dope and on a compositional level the music fit the lyrics like a glove. Personally, I dunno whether the music here is also remixed from the Depeche Mode original, but in any case this is one to scope out for more from OC's resident big beat champ.

Dhsu w/Mustin - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages & The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time "Nayru's Lullaby" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4228) [VGMix2 #4228]
David Hsu with some production assistance from the "Mustiest" man in game music remixing, Mustin, breaks off some relatively conservative stuff, also participating in the competition of performances that are splendid with this double-shot of Zelda game coverage. This was revised since the competition in the form that you hear now. Checking this out on headphones, there were tons of instances where no release on various notes exposed the piece as sequenced, killing the ability to really sit back and melt into the piece. But for the relatively undiscriminating ear of the casual listener, release issues like that mean jack shit and it's really easy to just let the piece whisk John Q. Remixing Fan to another place. I always prefer pieces to register with the higher frequencies, but the atmosphere was handled well regardless. Very engaging stuff that I hope gets reworked for the all-important details, for maximum splendidness, am I rite?

DistantJ - Slayers "Moonlight and Water" (http://www.animeremix.org/music1/download.php?song=AR-SlayersTheMotionPicture-MoonlightandWater.mp3) [Anime Remix #62]
What do you get when you cross trance and the gratuitous usage of a shakuhachi? You get "Moonlight and Water", the latest remix release tackling an anime that I've never heard of (SUE ME!), Slayers. While I felt the mixing needed some work and would appreciate more creative synth design, the ideas here progressed nicely nonetheless, including some more active, booty-shaking ideas throughout the second half. Certainly something to check out among AR's growing library during this, the site's formative years.

DistantJ - NiGHTS into Dreams... "Nights into Euphoria" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3944) [VGMix2 #3944]
"Dreams Dreams" gets the trance treatment from DistantJ of the UK in his second track here this week. The melody really could have served to be much more prominent here, as it falters on a volume level and a compositional level. But I'm always for using source material very overtly. This one did a decent job of crafting something more from the motifs of Dreams Dreams rather than crafting a full-fledged arrangement out of things. If you like your mixes liberal, this shouldn't be a problem.

Disturbed - The Legend of Zelda 3 "Before the Mirror" (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/zelda/z3/sounds/mp3/BeforetheMirror(Disturbed).mp3) [Splendid Performance: On the Keys]
Mark Dillon's someone who's essentially a one-hit wonder if you've only combed around on OCR, thanks to his underrated Tyrian mix "Composition in Q". Here, Mark performs in a driving, energetic approach familiar to people who enjoy Noir's work with this arrangement tackling some better-known material from Zelda: A Link to the Past. I felt the arrangement could have stood to be more interpretive with its source material (particularly the Title theme), but each section of this medley possessed some level of personal flair. Another good representative of the talent being brought to the table amidst RPGamer's recent VG rearrangement competitions, which is why it narrowly took 1st place for Splendid Performance's first audition phase.

djpretzel - Star Fox 1 "Fortuna Favors the Funk" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01361/) [OC ReMix #1361]
When I talked to David Lloyd (or Dave as we commonly call this god of a man) on VG Frequency #50, he said that one thing he missed as OverClocked ReMix got bigger and his responsibilities, both at OCR and elsewhere, got bigger was the ability to crank out music on a regular basis. During the past few months though he's been doing a good job of mixing more often, already dropping "The Sveldt" a few months ago along with a pair of well done vocal Anime Remixes. Here, the Pretz funks you down with some fly-ass shit. And that's pretty much all the selling I need to do for djp's latest ReMix effort. Snack on this shit.

DjUnz! f/Perhaps-a-Doobie - Think Twice III (Frankie Boz Edit)" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2669/DjUnz%20feat%20Perhaps-a-Doobie%20-%20Think%20Twice%20III%20%28Frankie%20Boz%20Edit%2 9.mp3) [R:K:O #2669]
Stupidity, thy name is perhaps Perhaps-a-Doobie. Oy. If you're down with BEERmix given the European treatment, eat a bowl of fudge and kick back with some amusingly abominable joke mix crudulence with Unz & Doobie. Wow, that's bad, Boz! :-P If those Euros aren't joking about sex, then they joke about fudge.

Flik - "Only One Name..." (http://www.vagstudios.com/audio/OnlyOneName.mp3) [http://www.vagstudios.com]
Chris Serani puts his voice skills to the test with this, the dilemma of knowing the man with only one name, Mustin. The music may be too loud, but that just means it's INTENSE, HAHAHAHA! Face!

Freemind - "Close Your Eyes 2" (http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=2451801) [http://www.soundclick.com/freemind]
Thanasis Kaloutzis returns with some original solo pianer stylins [sic] possessing some emotive overtones and constantly morphing ideas. The emotions conveyed in this piece seemed to alter every few seconds in what comes across as a fairly freeform piece that lack a lot of traditional structure. Indeed, it easily sounds like a performance that Freemind could duplicate if he ever wanted to. Did he close his eyes and simply make things up as he went along? Usually when I do that and play the piano, they kick me out of whatever establishment I'm in. Practice makes perfect I suppose. Not really a piece that you'll be able to get a firm grasp on, you should nonetheless feel enthused about taking the ride.

the funktionalists - "the 5th funktion" (http://www.zykomusik.com/funktional/the%205th%20funktion.mp3) [http://www.zykomusik.com]
zyko's pimping the first set of tracks recorded with his new band, the funktionalists, so check out what weed, Ryan & Bryce have laid down in their first session from May 27th. I specifically listed "the 5th funktion" as my personal favorite track here, though I was also particularly feeling the 6th and 9th funktions as well. Everything here's game if you're looking for some laid-back, raw funk recordings. There's even a shoutout to X-Strike Studios head Tim Ekkebus in the titling of "Hthe8th funktion." Everything's pretty basic here, nothing flashy, so this is a good sampling of weed's latest musical project with no pretentiousness. Looking forward to the funktionalists cooking up some more funk stylings as they jam some more and gradually click together as a group.

goat - CastleVania 1 "Scourge of 1691" (http://dod.vgmix.com/past/may05/goat-CV-Scourge-DoD.mp3) [Dwelling of Duels: Konami]
Ah, the killer rock medley. A winning staple of many a DoD, Chris Gates slayed the competition with this lengthy CV1 mix that blew away the rest. The great thing about the DoD entries are that many of the longer entries are justified in their length and leave the listener incredibly satisfied for their nostalgic game fix. With the popular choice of Konami for May's competition (http://dod.vgmix.com/past/may05) as well as the DoD format itself steadily increasing in overall participation, many of the other entries deserve your time as well. virt brought up 2nd place with the Metal Gear mix "MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85" while DoD's brother gods of geetar Ashane & housethegrate closed out the winners with the more obscure Madara arrangement "Madara, Movement 1". And of course, being DoD, a shitload of the runner-ups are worthy of pimpage including Dennis Mott, LuIzA TSM, Kadmium, Ryan8bit, zyko, Koelsch1, Ailsean, Rexy, XMark, Shawn Phase ("Bahhh, take THAT bitch!") and many other new and familiar names, including an unforgettable, inspirational performance from the DoD supergroup, The West Coast Shizzies!

Infamous - "Rouge Crakaz" (http://195.249.116.158/Visitor_Trax/infamous/Infamous_roguecrackaz.mp3) [http://www.infamousuk.com]
Chris drops the quick one on ya this week with some original techno material. I definitely enjoyed that garbled robovoice type sampling in there, and even though the keyboard was a weak point, I started laughing at 1:36 when a sample that reminded me of the Chippettes got thrown in there. Infy's making me chuckle over here. Dunno what the inspiration behind the track is, as I would have loved to have heard some

Jormungand - Secret of Mana "Dark Star Scherzo" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3292) [Splendid Performance: On the Keys / VGMix2 #3292]
Joe Schwebke took 2nd place in RPGamer's latest remixing competition with this piano-based arrangement of "Star of Darkness", a favorite of GrayLightning's that translates surprsingly well to the eighty-eight keys. Joe does a good job of tickling dem synthetic ivories and really offering up some good rhythmical ideas while arranging this piece. I really loved the quick, sweeping runs around the 2 minute mark, and while the production was lacking in higher frequencies, all-in-all this was a solid piece with an upbeat tempo and some crystalline textures. This being the first arrangement of Jormungand's that I've actually heard I can say that he certainly has work that espouses a great deal of creativity. Get up on this guy's other work as well and see what he has to offer. Forgot to mention the work splendid in here, by the way. Splendid.

Kadmium - Jazz Jackrabbit 2 "Kill the Wabbit" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4213) [VGMix2 #4213]
"This is a melodic death metal remix..." Say wha??? Do they do that now? Jesse Higginson channels one of the best Looney Tunes songs ever titled to bring you death in this excellent death metal mix. The lyrics are pure Satanic-level style, though I would have loved to have heard some more ear-breaking volume here. Break my ears, bro! The devil says DO IT! But seriously, when Jesse says melodic death metal, he's not playing around. Any fan of the rock can find something here to like. I'd love to hear this given another hard look at the mixing to really bring out the power and energy here and then have it subbed to OCR. You can break my ears, Kadmium, but don't break my heart.

Kaijin - Air "Summer Lights" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4278) [VGMix2 #4278]
Brief but very very stylish material from Tim Sheehy that lacks clarity, but possesses some good pop overtones. In that sense, it's a very loopable. The general vibe here repeats too often for such a short song, but that's likely an intentional move that I still feel sells the original material short on some level. The new sounds around 1:50 did threw me off the first time around, but you get used to them, even if they don't quite fit in there. Any release that indicates Kaijin is still at it is is something to check out. He's been an increasingly regular presence at VGMix with his releases.

PICK OF THE WEEK: ktriton w/Christian Pacaud - Tsugunai, Shadow Hearts, Xenosaga, Magic Pengel 2 & Xenogears "Static Wonderland" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4272) [VGMix2 #4272]
Boston's Kunal Majmudar collabs once again with the venerable Mr. Pacaud on bass to hook it up with another great medley mix, this time completely derived from material composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. In this case, most of the source material is relatively obscure, as you certainly don't see anyone else covering this stuff. While the mix is a bit on the quiet side and some of the quick static breaks in the track will definitely throw people off, the sum total of ideas here is total ear candy. Over time, I came to appreciate a lot of the strangers ideas placed in here, and most of you should as well. With Christian helping subtly with some stylish bass, ktriton carries the bear's share of the work in this smooth, jazzy hybrid of some of Mitsuda's finest compositions. Truly professional grade work that's a required download. You should be charged money for something this solid.

Leis Miller - Megaman 3 "Plan B (80's Version 1)" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4246) [VGMix2 #4246]
Leis's stuff is just a wonder to behold. It's really not for everyone. He takes an analogous approach to zyko in all of his material in that he doesn't care whether the mixing is slick, and doesn't mind relying on drumloops and odd sounds and textures as long as he's feels he's successfully expressing himself; that's always the most important goal for Leis, who many will only be able to classify as an acquired taste. Frankly, this wasn't as crazy as say "Start Button", and could use a lot of work on the support instrumentation in particular. Still good to see Leis breaking some off. He's become a cult figure of sorts over at VGMix, even having Ryan8bit remix some of his previous Metal Gear mix material.

Nasenmann - "Pack Your Sack, Square!" (http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=2391256) [Thematic Original Music Competition 1]
Picking up the victory for the first ever TOMC, Nasenmann created his own Overworld theme in a chiptune-inspired style. It's pretty loopy and brief, just like in the 8-bit days. With this kind of title, it sounds like one of those tunes used in those unpopular 3rd party NES games that you wondered "who in the hell would buy that?" But if in fact you wanted to envision what it would be like playing something called "Squirrley's Nuts," you've got you man in Nasenmann. Wait a second, that says "square???" Bah. Seriously though, this competition helps to fill the void created by the lack of CompoST competitions over at zircon's site SoundTempest.net (http://www.soundtempest.net), and Nasenmann's winning effort earns the victory through some catchy old-school composition.

Nasenman - "Power Hardcore" (http://doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC22/ORC22_Nasenmann_-_Power_Hardcore.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 22]
Damn, that's hardcore. While the mixing is frankly pretty weak, there's certainly much power to be had in this purposefully ear-splitting winner of ORC22, which took a decidedly different approach on Ichitootah's work than Rexy's 2nd place finisher did. I really would have liked to have heard some more work done with vocals, because the distorted vocals briefly thrown in here were pretty damn cool. So while it ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer in regards to the percussion, there were a lot of driving ideas and thick textures here that made this better and better over multiple listens.

Nick Tam - Tales of Symphonia "Fair Lass of Ozette" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4280) [VGMix2 #4280]
Some cool new material from Nick Tam who continues to come out with some worthwhile releases at VGMix. He'd be a killer with some more experience to refine his work, but he's definitely got the right idea. I didn't really mind the production and timing issues so bad as a causal listener, and checking this one out does give you a window into the guy's potential. Acoustic guitar, piano, light drum work, woodwinds, and the all-important harmonica come together to form a pretty promising piece of music. He's got a lot to learn in order to up his game, but I like hearing this guy at work nonetheless.

OverCoat - "Type" (http://neutronstar.org/soc/OverCoat%20-%20Type.mp3) [http://www.neutronstar.org/soc]
Scott Porter can't sleep. And what SOC can't sleep, that means he's busy making musicks for you the people, the ones that he loves (or at least has a desperate need of gaining their worship). Scott SOC's it up per his usual style with some nice distorted techno featuring some dope drumloops, vox work and a tight, beepy (yeah, shutup) lead that locks everything together. OverCoat been pumping out the jams for as long as I can remember. The distortion may not be your thing, but it's not over the top or anything like that. Very loopable and ready to give you a good example of what OverCoat's general style is about.

Rexy - Dragon Warrior 2 "Anguished Beyond Words" (http://www.rpgamer.com/games/dq/dq2/sounds/mp3/AnguishedBeyondWords(Rexy).mp3) [Splendid Performance: On the Keys]
Bev brought out her own splendid performance this week with this delicate DW2 arrangement on solo piano. Personally, I go for fuller pieces myself, though that's nothing some extra sustain or reverb couldn't have handled here to take away some of the relative sparseness. Compositionally, I also felt this could have been more dynamic over the course of it's four and a half minutes, but like I mentioned the slow, delicate nature of this one does a good job of conveying solemn emotions and, for some of you heart-on-your-sleeve types, an atmosphere of quiet introspection. (Hey, did ya like that close?)

Rexy - "Snowflakes" (http://doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC22/ORC22_Rexy_-_Snowflakes.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 22]
Bev really steps shit up with this bueno-bueno arrangement of some original material by Ichitootah for OCR22, taking 2nd place. The compositional and pacing are both solid, and I liked the energy here, where the pluckiness of the intro gave off some good snowfall imagery. Very loopable and catchy. Not really there in terms of sounding like a real piano, but this was well done for synthetic piano and something a lot of you out there will enjoy greatly. Only 4 or 5 months removed from the winter too, so this is the quite the seasonal arrangement for ya.

Roetaka - "Let Yourself Live" (http://www.remix.herograw.com/LordMaestro/Let%20Yourself%20Live.mp3) [http://www.soundclick.com/roetaka]
The first thing I noticed? Mixed too damn loud. Shame on ya. But one you reconcile the volume levels with yourself (or just turn down the volume, I imagine), you can enjoy this original that Alex Roe has labeled as Big Beat Orchestral. The sounds are fairly basic for the most part, but the texture is pretty decent. Wish I could have heard the melody a bit more in here, but I really liked the composition here regardless. There was a fair amount of variation here and a ton of energy. If this was revisited in a few years, it could be revised an turned into a monster of an original track that would fit like a glove into any action-based game soundtrack. I noticed at a relatively brief 3 1/2 minutes that the track didn't drag on like many of Roe's lengthier pieces. Good stuff. The sides needs to be refined, but the meat and potatoes are mmm-mmm good (and so forth). I wouldn't pass this one up at all. Just watch your ears though. I mean it.

Roetaka - Pokémon Gold & Silver "Rest" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4264) [VGMix2 #4264]
Alex keeps it coming this week with some almost tropical-sounding chillout from a game I shall not name, for it makes me retch and gag. Charmander-char. I any case, at a lengthier 5:05, the track manages to wander aimlessly around a bit before returning to that sweet sequenced guitar melody. The support on strings, string pads, and piano was pretty solid, thought the drumkit felt rather out of place here. This was really one I appreciated for the compositional ideas rather than the production, which was downright muddy and washed out. That, and the needlessly loud volume, made it hard to really get a grasp on things, and probably went over the top with reverb in order to present a fairly ethereal atmosphere. With the mixing and mastering being reassessed, along with some other areas, this could be a winner. In its present stage, it's absolutely worth getting to keep tabs on Roe and is efforts to get onto OCR. You may still find yourself chillin' to this one.

SGX - "Distant" (http://www.supergreenx.com/music/Distant.mp3) [http://www.supergreenx.com]
Danny Adler, now using his SuperGreenX nickname in shorthand, releases his first original track since officially adopting the SGX moniker. My attention was hooked by a very tense intro that made me think the track would be dark the whole way through. But a nice change in the tone thanks to a lush piano and strings taking over brightened the mood. And indeed, later on, the track continued to change, going darker and cycling back to brighter sounds. Quite the identity crisis, this original piece. Not the normal high-tempo, beat-intensive work of Danny's that I'm used to hearing, "Distant" has the potential of really altering your perception of the potential of SGX's music. Very cryptic and indeed on some level unbalanced and disturbing, you've just gotta check out the buzz.

Shnabubula - Secret Stuff [Like I'm Gonna Follow Up on That]
I thought I'd heard the last from Samuel Ascher-Weiss once we posted "Mucho Dollar Care a Junk CIA" over at OCR and he disappeared for six months to follow his musical lust for Chopin. But fear not, because he's back and he's tackling some cult classic source material that you'll be proud of when you finally get your hands on it. I've been sworn to secrecy by Sam and another top name in the scene on this one, so that's all you get so they don't outright kill me.

Trenthian - "Asper Laboratory Complex" (http://mysite.verizon.net/res0440r/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/trenthian_lb_stages_apser_laboratory_complex.mp3) [Lifeform OST]
John St.John hooks it up with some action-oriented original material featuring strings, synths and some subtle synth electric guitar filling things out in the back. To me, the track is missing a certain "I don't know" to really give the whole think punchiness or meatiness or some other word espousing overall manliness. Right now, this one is more of a demo-level version of the track, so there may be more to come as far as additional ideas go. This was some good hybrid stuff, melding string orchestration with electronic and industrial-style elements. And clocking in at over 3 1/2 minutes, the major majority of this one seems to be in the can, so now's a good time to see what Trent's got cooking since he hasn't had any remix releases in a little while.

trickwaters - Final Fantasy "Contrapunctus" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4160) [Splendid Performance: On the Keys / VGMix2 #4160]
Got 10 minutes? You do? Well, that's still not enough time to sit down and check out Patrick Waters' organ-based FF mix. Got 10 minutes and 47 seconds? Ok, now we're ready to talk turkey. I think the novelty of this one is strong enough to make y'all check it out, though I will say from my genuinely ignorant but speculative opinion that this didn't have much in the way of splendid performance dynamics. The organ sounds far from realistically sequenced, I mean FAR, though my limited experience listening to organs involved visiting a few Catholic Sunday masses. I'm much more used to church choirs singing a capella. So while I think it's a lemon, and that's no offense to Pat who I'm sure is aware of his own limitations give it that look and see if you're down with a very unorthodox idea for a remix. And yes, for those of you with no patience, this is arranging only one source tune. That's stamina for ya.

The Wingless f/Aurora - "Auroramix" (http://www.thewingless.com/music/mp3s/auroramix.mp3) [http://www.thewingless.com]
Doing radio (and doing it well) has it perks, I should know. You get zealous fans and community fame, and on top of that, you get community artists sampling your voice and immortalizing you with fucked up remixes. I've gotten the "I used samples and soundclips from you to embarrass you" treatment from Rayza & Jared Hudson among others, so it's only fair that VGDJ (http://www.vgdj.net) sex kitten/host Teresa Fisico get the same treatment from the OCR panel's resident black stallion and all-around deviant John "The Wingless" Burnett. It's only a minute and 16 seconds long, but you'll loop it for 16 minutes if you're as horndoggy lonely as some of the schmoes around the community. "Funky, cool, this song has energy from start to finish. Oh my God, I loved it. Um, ok."

Xtormrage - Metal Gear Solid 2 "Salsa Snake" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4276) [VGMix2 #4276]
So I saw this one in VGMix tier 1 and had to check it out, since everyone like salsa muzak. Despite some MIDI-grade samples, the heart of this one is the stylish arrangement from Jorge Luis Boscan that takes a creative spin on the frequently mixed "Metal Gear Solid Theme." I have to say, I'd love to hear this performed by a live band, but if you're gonna sequence salsa music, this has to be the way to do it. Haven't heard of Xtorm before this one, but he provides the goods and the substance. Twirl your lady around with this one while she holds a rose in her mouth. It's what God intended for you to do.

Enjoy the community stuffs.

And now...the disappearance...

Dude, if Israfel was still in the game i'd be humping the vote button all over. No worries, I'll think carefully over this one while looking on at the selections out there.

Thank God you didn't mention anything about the DoD aftermath, or I would have exploded 8O

And yes, for those of you with no patience, this is arranging only one source tune. That's stamina for ya.
I'm not Trick, but he arranged two sources from the game - the castle theme and the prologue music. Just for clarification purposes ;)

And yes, for those of you with no patience, this is arranging only one source tune. That's stamina for ya.
I'm not Trick, but he arranged two sources from the game - the castle theme and the prologue music. Just for clarification purposes ;)
HEY, don't undermine me, lady! My word is gold. Every last word!

analoq all the way. PURE SEX0Rz!
I mean... look at all of them. Only Aaron, Vigilante, Larry and zyko are known from pictures. And Aaron is definately the coolest (dig up the thread with the pics of the VG concert in LA... then you know what I mean).

Well and Larry is our Sex-God anyway. Did Paige finally get her sexual frosty by now? XD

AND GRAY!
Be honest! You voted for yourself, aight?!

Very engaging stuff that I hope gets reworked for the all-important details, for maximum splendidness, am I rite?
Heh, don't worry...it'll be back on the queue soon enough, Gray willing. ;)

Everyone knows that the sexiest judge was Malcos. That lovable negro bloke. I abstain unless one of the current black panel members can fake a British accent.

I see you've never heard The Wingless refine his voice all British-like for the ladies. Too bad Antonio Pizza isn't a current judge or he'd count for the fake accent too.

I think Schnabubula is the sexiest NAME, probably because of the way I say it with "boob" in it.

"man sieht sich galaxie" is the sexiest sexy thing that was ever sexy. No other judge can beat that.

Haha... I vote for "Demonik Electronik". Cause Analoq sounds more evil in this track. The title "man sieht sich Galaxie" was from me, well... Analoq asked me how to write it correctly. XD

AH MAN! Close run. So far Gray seems to be the most loved and sexiest bitch, closely followed by analoq. Could it be that Gray is on the mysterious side? No pics from him available and always being the OCR watchdog (moderator)?

"Too bad" nothing! DEFIANCE, I COMMIT!! Chazz, pop that cherry and end your abstainence. Listen and be astounded! (http://home.comcast.net/~agent_522/ap-apsexybritishaccent.mp3)

People seem to be taking this vote as a vote for an all around cool judge rather than the intent of the poll. I know several judges got votes just for that reason, especially the ones with 0 votes.

Anyway, larry does another lame poll again.

I'm sure Paige will vote for me though, she has better taste than larry.

Paige 4 Judge.

I must say, I was interested to notice that Liontamer was not even listed as a possibility of a judge to vote for as the sexiest. I must remind the panel that although I am more of a girl than Liontamer aka Atitti the Hun, is, he still is my sexual frosty and that should count for something.

But regardless, I would still have to pick Gray as he knows flattery with women will get him everywhere ;)

With your vote, my dear, nothing and no one else matters!

PS. Everyone else feel free to vote for me regardless. For justice!
