As the poll for who the sexiest OCR judge (other than me of course) keeps heating up, we continue pimping it up with summer material to cool you off, checking out the week from June 5th to June 11th (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11411.#11411):
ABG - Final Fantasy 10 "Prayer" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4333) [VGMix2 #4333]
As far as “Song of Prayer” remixes go, no one's ever really done anything much with transposing the melodies of the popular Song of Prayer vox into synth or instrumental music. And, unfortunately in my opinion, this is also not one of those cases. But if you're ok with some wholly original material being integrated with the Song of Prayer vox, and many people out there are, then you'll have absolutely no problem with ABG's latest release. This is yet another lengthy release from Shawn, clocking in at just under 8 minutes, and the trance ideas here are relatively basic but still well put together. The mixing could be a bit cleaner, but you can play this in a rave and shake your butt, so check it out if you have friends that also wanna take part in shaking their asses.
BogusRed - Final Fantasy 7 "Beyond Midgar" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01363/) [OC ReMix #1363]
Ah, "Beyond Midgar." I'm so familiar with this one after so long that's it was almost strange to finally see it up on OC in all it's 88-key glory. After Ms. Susie Sahim got this one passed by the panel, djp along with many of the NOs pushed for something that would address some of the more glaring problems in this one, because while the arrangement was hot, there were some nagging hissing issues, as well as a pretty flat atmosphere, and a couple of notes with no releases, which is poison in terms of creating something that's remotely authentic-sounding. So I had the task of corresponding with Susie in order to keep her up to speed with revision suggestions and nudging her about the status of the mix. Once the summer kicked in and school wrapped up, everything was good to go from Susie's end, and you get this lengthy, beautiful and flowy solo piano coverage of the Final Fantasy VII Main Theme. Good stuff that the people are already fawning over (as if you couldn't guess).
Chronblom - Rupert and the Ice Castle "Latin Wonderland Mix" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2690/Chronblom%20-%20Rupert%20and%20the%20ice%20castle%20%28Latin%20 Wonderland%20mix%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2690]
It's as if we're required to have Latin-themed music represented every week somehow this summer. Chronblom of C64 scene fame offers up a quick one from the obscure Rupert and the Ice Castle with a mix that features some lead strings, acoustic guitars, spicy percussion, nice accordion (say wha?) and a pretty fakey piano. The mixing is a bit loud and rough and the piano in particular ain't bringing it, so I felt this one needed some more work before its release. But check this one out for a decent attempt at a European Spanish vibe, as the arrangement was fairly interesting.
chthonic - Tetris 1 "Linear Groove" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4293) [VGMix2 #4293]
Ben Briggs drops some beats alongside his blocks with this Tetris mix that takes more of a rhythmical and expansionist-style approach toward the source material. If you've ever wanted to hear Russian folk music given the funk treatment (and God knows I have), then you need not wait any longer. Sample-wise I was a bit underwhelmed as I felt the synths could have been played around with further via effects to create more unique textures. At the same time, I also felt the piece dragged on a little bit, but the ideas here are solid, so it's definitely worth the time to check out. I'd personally rather see some more done with this, but Ben's at the skill level where he could get this to OCR level, which I think would be quite a treat.
Corran - Megaman X5 "X's Lament" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4296) [VGMix2 #4296]
If want a man who knows how to make nice chillout music, Bryan is your man. The overall presentation here is relatively understated, much like DarkeSword's own "The Father of All" except even more so. That's even more of a surprise to me given how ominously this track felt like it would be during the intro. While the strings here sounded pretty fake, Bryan did a good job of not exposing his samples easily, allowing the casual listner to hear how relatively well all of the elements blended together. While it's a bit too active and upbeat to completely immerse yourself in, I think it'd be a good idea to either sit down or lay down while sampling this. Close your eyes and lament along with X. You know you wanna.
DJ Mitch - Lightforce "Original Minimal Mix" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2717/DJ%20Mitch%20-%20Lightforce%20%28Original%20Minimal%20Mix%29.mp3 ) [R:K:O #2717]
Making the rounds at RKO this week is this groovy beat-driven electronic offering from DJ Mitch, who plays out some steady enjoyment for you clocking in at just over 6 minutes. I can't say I know where the "minimal" moniker for this one comes from, although the sounds here are fairly standard for the genre. I wouldn't have gone for more clarity and less murk here in the presentation, but this was some solid works that makes some nice active background music. No need to scope this one out if you're looking for catchy melodies and hooks; do in fact check 'er out if you're a fan of something that paces along nicely and lays down a consistent groove.
Doron Deutsch - Bruce Lee "Acoustic Jam" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2705/Doron%20Deutsch%20-%20Bruce%20Lee%20%28acoustic%20Jam%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2705]
Hey, this is some cool shit. It's not REALLY acoustic, but this sequenced piece at least attempts to convey a genuine instrumental feel here. I never played Bruce Lee on the C64, but I'm kind of wondering how it compares to Kung-Fu and Yie-Ar Kung Fu. In any case, this has some nice twangy acoustic guitar on lead that will remind you of Vurez on some level, though Doron & Vurez are, in my mind, apples and oranges. A little bit unwieldy on the guitar sequencing, and the mastering ain't the hotness, but this had a lot going for it as just something to kick back and enjoy for it's nostalgic value. Surprisingly strong in spite of its presentation weaknesses.
Infamous - "Blood" (http://195.249.116.158/Visitor_Trax/infamous/Blood.mp3) [http://www.infamousuk.com]
Oooh, some piano-centric stuff from Infy! Given the title here, this intro obviously wasn't what I expected, so I patiently waited for the track to take some darker turns. Indeed, some woodwinds and light haunting ambience/vox joined in, along with some beats and cymbal swells. The ambient vox was mixed disappointingly low and didn't play as much of a factor as it should have, which was a critical issue, but this wasn't half-bad for something so short. The beatwork in particular held this back a bit and could have been varied up and scaled back. Checking this one out, I didn't feel that Chris needed to shoehorn this original into some sort of CastleVania or Resident Evil style, but at the same time, those soundtrack tend to be haunting and really showcase all of the instrumentation clicking together and meshing well. Admirable stuff, and I hope Infy tries this style again in the future.
Less Ashamed of Self - Rayman "Grave Task" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc43/PRCv2-17_LAOS_-_Grave_Task.mp3) [The People's Remix Competition v2-17]
Be frightened...LAOS has won the People's Remix Competition. Here's he goes for an upbeat mix of the Skops Battle theme with a nice tempo, some decent but otherwise effective drumwork and some pretty damn cool synth texture than help make up for the relative sparseness of the piece as well. The use of drumloops was a little bit cheesy and REALLY drew itself out too long in the middle of the track, kinda like the pieces of bread in a sandwich somehow being the best part of the sandwich. In any case, this was surprisingly catchy, so swing by Doulifeè's space and see what LAOS brought to the table for this one. And if you do not find a way, no one will.
Merino - "Search Lights" Version 1.0 (http://s95441576.onlinehome.us/Merino_-_Search_Lights.mp3) [Club Party '05]
Merino, baby! Where have you been at if you haven't been checking out their original material? You know, for most of Merino's material you hear some hiss during the intro, but as soon as the music kicks in, you couldn't care less. I keep pestering Kailem to submit more remixes, but while he decides to deprive us with oh so much cruelty, you can check out this mainstream-style weirdo pop for some original sampleage. The atmosphere is a little on the sparse side, but the instrumentation and lyrics are stylish, anchored by some acoustic guitar and Kaliem's vocals. His delivery is a little bit rough, because he excels at more of a spoken word-like style such as the one used in their previous original "Filtered Water", but it's a pleasure to hear the band pump out more releases and have him get some all-important practice. Other cuts from Club Party '05 are available including another overly lengthy but still solid track "Air Balloon," as well as the lyrically impressive "Outside." Not to be missed if you're a fan of the off-kilter stuff.
mikka - X-Out "X-OUT" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2702/mikka%20%20-%20X-OUT.mp3) [R:K:O #2702]
Alright, so the name's not creative, but it's what beyond the surface that counts. mikka goes for some electronic coverage of the C64 game that first came to my attention thanks to Binster's superlative mix "LiquidX." This one features some nice electronic work tempered by some string pads and built upon about a third of the way through by a well-handled electrosynth lead and the all-important SID chip sounds. This one moves along nicely and is a good choice to while lazily attending to what you people out there call life. You kick back, enjoy the SIDtune goodness and don't come back until it's looped through four or five times. Looking to hear more engaging and active stuff from mikka that grooves a bit better (groove bias, folks), but for your money, which conveniently is $0, you're definitely in good shape if you pick this up.
Ork Estral - "Ravished Soul" (http://www.angelfire.com/musicals/nigelsimmons2/RavishedSoul.mp3) [http://nigel.has.it]
Go, Nigel, go! Ork's dropping the usual excellent orchestral stuff with this dynamic, flowly piece that doesn't sound melancholy, but nonetheless makes a nice go at conveying the implied imagery of the title. What mental imagery Nigel particularly had in mind, I couldn't really say myself, but to me this was a piece that was demonstrating a soul being romantically ravished in progress rather than examining the mind of an already ravished soul. You see how emotionally deep we get around here at VGF? This piece really develops and evolves nicely, a true joy to listen to over and over again. Remember to literally clear out Nigel's webspace of everything he has available over at the now 44-tracks strong Mostly Ghostly, all available at Nigel's webspace.
PriZm f/Leonie - Xenosaga 1 "ein anderer Abschied" (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01362/) [VGMix2 #3719 / OC ReMix #1362]
Pascal follows up with this excellent sophomore mix from Xenosaga showing he'd no one-hit wonder. I love the crying intro here, as it's one of those ideas that's unique and sets this mix apart from all of the others at OCR. This was some excellent rock with great interplay from all of the instrumentation involved, along with some haunting soprano vocals from Pascal's friend Leonie that filled things out nicely. The composition here was very nicely done, really progressing well and gradually building the music's intensity within its 5 minutes thanks to the introduction of some militaristic beatwork along with some wailing electrik geetar. That's like...damn. Nice stuff with some sinister leanings. Don't you wish everything had these evil connotations? I know you did.
RushJet1 - "Premonition" (http://bellsouthpwp.net/R/u/RushJet1/FCmini/premonition.nsf) [http://rushjet1.tk]
RJ1's our man in this scene as far it comes to representing the demoscene and chiptune-making to its finest. Here he drops some excellent (and authentic!) NSF music format material with this brief but upbeat original. The way Rush uses the capabilities of NSF to their fullest reminds me of early 1990s Nintendo soundtrack that truly made use of the 2A03 APU soundchip and pushed the NES's sounds to their limits. My only big gripe whenever I hear Rush's pieces are that they don't loop at all. Now THAT's a key area where the NSF format's capabilities need not be wasted. The file's literally only a couple of kilobytes which makes this an absolute must download. Alongside this already pimp release, RushJet keeps it going with other equally catchy stuffs like "Against Overwhelming Odds," "Sea of Memories," & "Overdrive!" Give them all that look and hear a lot for only a little bit of size. NSF enthusiasts, we love the RushJet, oh yes we do.
Sefiros - Silent Hill 2 "Under the Influence" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4212) [VGMix2 #4212]
Bryan Henderson heads back to the bread and butter of his remixing game with another Silent Hill series VGMix release. Centered around a piano, some drumwork and some subtle synth work, this actually isn't the usual fare from Sef. Things kick into gear with the melody entering in at 1:50 via a distorted lead that'll be hit or miss. The drumwork is pretty vanilla, but it's certainly serviceable. More of my focus rested on the piano and string work, which occasionally hit some odd chords that left me like "whut whut?" but hey, he was under the influence while making this one. If you wanna sample some remix material from a horror game that's not the usual spooky vox/pads/ambience combination, here's your calling.
Sephfire & pixietricks - Final Fantasy 10 "Journey's End" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4325) [VGMix2 #4325]
Try not to focus on that fakey piano opening things up, because the sample really shouldn't be exposed like that. Once things pick up though, the atmosphere is pretty good though it's way too muddy and dull, which prevents it from achieving full pimp status. Daniel Floyd's been working on this for a while, but he announced in the Works forum a while back that he had gotten Jill Goldin into the picture with her vocal talents, making this pixie's follow-up mix to her Ocarina of Time OCR debut "Prayer." Seph & pix bring the melodic ambient game here with this take on "People of the Far North" that initially left me scratching my head to make a connection, but it's there and does a good job of giving things a whole new feel through changing the time signature and creating a much more delicate, ethereal soundscape. Solid new material from both Dan & Jill that needs better production, but otherwise handles the arrangement and performance nicely.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Shnabubula - "Symbiote Funk" (http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/shnabubula/Music/05_Symbiote_Funk.mp3) [Indeed]
Sam's back with some dope original stuff from a new EP hosted at his site. I've always been a big fan of Sam's kooky craftsmanship, as the synthetic textures in his works are consistently top-notch. You never really hear the same instrumental combination ideas repeated twice, and in a musical world dominated by repetition and hooks, this truly manages to stand out in creativity by making sure there are tons of instrumental variations. Indeed, indeed you need to snap this up and in particular don't also miss "First Prime of Apostrophe". Glad to see Sam dropping some new original works to keep the eclectic fandom satisfied once again. He's a muzak machine.
zyko - Final Fantasy 4 "Losing Sight" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4328) [VGMix2 #4328]
YAY! weed closes out out with some solid FF kwakage for the win this week. FF4, now that's an FF soundtrack that deserves more coverage than FFVI or FFVII. The 6 minutes went by like nothing, surprisingly groovy for something with such a distorted edge. And the opening with the keyboard organ along with that subtle close with the FFIV Main Theme...dope as well! I'm still just struck by how mellow and laid-back this turns out to be in-spite of the volume and aggression here. This kind of stuff makes me proud to end the week with our resident man with a Z on the panel (fellow panelist and all-around good Z-guy zircon notwithstanding). Such an easy pickup for those who like to rock. We salute you.
That was fun-filled, y'all. Come back and see me, homies.

i don't know about that, the complex odor of Liontamer's pheromones is strong indeed...i tend to have to spray Larry down with two cans of rose-scented air freshener and wear a gas mask before i can be in the same room with him without being forced to rip my clothes off and feed him strawberries with my toes. But for the edification of the community I submit the following re-enactment of a possible conversation with Liontamer were he to be under the influence of any intoxicating substance.

Liontamer: Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy baaaaabbbbyyyyy.
::Liontamer Staggers towards ThatPaige and trips on the carpet::

Liontamer: Meow! Hey, hey! Hey...Hey Baaaaaaaaabbbbyyy if you got any questions for me you should ask me now.....baaaaaaaaabbbbbyyyyyy. Meow!
::Liontamer leans his head on ThatPaige's shoulder and slowly rolls his head towards the wall, banging it slightly::
I would point the audience's attention to the
fact that Liontamer would be "meowing" as a
small cat rather than "rawwwrrring" like the,
ahem, "Lion" he is.
ThatPaige: Hmmm. Ok. Do you love me?

ThatPaige: Fine, go make love to your BatmanTAS dvd collection then. I'll admit it was why I got with you in the first place, but now I see it can only come between us...

I don't feel like making a whole new thread, so I'll use this classic, which desperately needs a bump.
Does anybody know if there's anyone who is keeping a master list or database of game remixes across the Internet?
I know OCR and VGMix aren't the only places to find music. There's also RKO, Dwelling of Duels, cover bands, IMCs, PRCs, doujins, and other stuff I can't even think of or don't know about. It makes it difficult when I want one definitive place to grab every Mega Man 2 remix (for example).
If a resource like this exists, please direct me. If it doesn't exist, someone should get cracking on making it.

I don't think there's any centralized place. But Larry has the hook-up on every single remix ever created, so I suggest stealing his Winamp playlist.
Also, I protest this poll for not having an "All of the Above" selection.A place such as that would take a hell of a lot of effort. Sure, you can gather up all the tracks from OCR, VGMix and all the C64/Amiga sites, but then you'd have to find out what each one was covering (which here at least isn't complete (http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=62023)). Then think of all the Japanese sites like SSH, Levo Lution, Quasar, et al, and translating them. For the competitions such as IMC you may have to provide your own hosting too.
Nearest thing to a central for VG remixes at the moment is ThaSauce (http://thasauce.sleazyc.com/). Otherwise just let Larry do all the work, or at least when he actually releases another

Please seed them for me at least, or if you could, try to put whole episodes as https or on an ftp.

I recommend to seed as much as possible so that an additional FTP or HTTP folder isn't needed. At least in my opinion.

As the "lady" in question in the poll, with regards to the poll options of poisonous campbell's soup and fine dining at McDonalds...the only thing poisonous larry has ever given me to eat was probably some chilli with prunes he made last year while we were watching Clerks on television 8O . He might try to vehemently deny this claim, but could you imagine a hot chick like me actually putting prunes in chili??? I mean Larry smells anyway...he has nothing to loose! As for McDonalds, Larry knows that if he really wants to score bonus points, we don't go to McDonalds...we go to Wendy's so I can get a sexual frosty. :P

Not too much for me to go through means that I could knock this out in a couple of hours, which is not only good for you and me, but good for America. The summer rundown gets back on track with material from June 12th through 18th (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11810.#11810).
Alexander Prievert - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Ye Olde Brambles 2006" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4362) [VGMix2 #4362]
Everyone loves brambles. Just from judging at OCR for a year, I've heard a number of people try to tackle "Stickerbrush Symphony", most of them not really gaining any measure of success. Alex here knows where his bread is buttered and sticks pretty closely to the original composition, simply giving the source material more of a sound upgrade in this simple electronic conversion. Very repetitive, but if you really love the theme that bad I suppose if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Bladiator - Final Fantasy 8 "Moontang" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4359) [VGMix2 #4359]
Karl always does a good job taking some average samples and working the magic on them. This take on "Waltz for the Moon" envisions the piece in a new dance style, opening up with a very flowy, natural-sounding piano intro before transitioning into some spicy tango carried by strings & accordion for the peoples. Anything with a sequenced accordion is automatically sexy. And you'll either love of loathe the "Hoo hoo" at 1:56. Very dynamically constructed stuff, further using the second half to build the momentum even further with a piano joining in. If this was live, the FF fans would mess themselves. Luckily for them, Blad doesn't give 'em the full monty.
chthonic - The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time & The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening "Anthem of a Misguided Youth" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01364) [VGMix2 #3667 / OC ReMix #1364]
Man, I dunno why people weren't feeling the clap-driven intro here. I usually hate the use of claps, but how can you help loving them when they're used skillfully like that? Ben Briggs followed up his incredibly catchy Super Mario 64 OC ReMix debut with this equally tricked out take on Z64's "Gerudo Valley" featuring the tasteful and well-integrated reference to "Ballad of the Windfish in there that all the musicians seem to be fascinated with these days. Kids, it works. You like vibes and Spanish-sounding guitars in there too? Who am I kidding, the whole Zelda thing already sold it for most of you anyway. chthonic shows his potential versatility & consistency nicely here.
DJ Crono f/Yuko Isamiyama, Takumichi, Keishi & Daisuke - The Legend of Zelda 1 "Ware o Sukui Tamae" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4365) (a.k.a. 'Save My Soul') [VGMix2 #4365]
Jovette Rivera be back at it again with friends via some liberal synth rock & vox spin on the often-mixed Overworld theme. The phone call opening with Yuko on this one was nearly worth the price of admission (free) alone, so be sure to see what that's all about. At 5:19-long, the length is a bit much for the idea, with some brief vocals from Crono only showing up at 2:43. The mixing was particular messy, which frankly is always a problem for Crono's material, but despite being cluttered together and clippy, the sound is somehow relatively sharp. Needs to be re-mixed, but if you're a fan of Jovette's stuff, this is yet another solid offering to flag down.
the funktionalists - "Southern California Sky" (http://www.zykomusik.com/mazika/funktional/2%20-%20Southern%20california%20sky.mp3) [http://www.zykomusik.com]
zyko's latest band completed their second jam session (http://www.zykomusik.com/funktional.html) on June 10th, producing another full album's worth of material for fans of the funk to get funky. Much like the funktionalists' first session releases, these are some very loose and unpolished tracks, so don't be walking in here like "dizzamn, this be straight from the studio!" or you'll look (and feel) stupid. weed, Bryce & Ryan keep it simple, but they really come together nicely within some of these tracks, especially the spotlighted "Southern California Sky". Guitar lead + effects = Geetar bias. Very effective stuff right there that has a simple structure but really is a quintessentially stylish and laid-back jam track. Don't miss out on others in the session like "Simian Alien" and "Pink Love" for the full experience.
Ichitootah - "Pompoms and Candied Chestnuts" (http://doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC23/ORC23_Ichitootah_-_Pompoms_And_Candied_Chestnuts.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 23]
What a strange creature this was. It felt like a doo-wop song given an electronica conversion. Don't believe me? No dice, you're supposed to. Besides, it's not like that the whole way through, so just keep an open mind. Ichi grabbed the uncontested win for OCR23 by fiddling around with some original material from Nasenmann. At 4:46, the idea kinda runs thin by the 3-minute mark, so I can't give it the full plug, but Ichi continues to remain a force in both the PRC & ORC competitions.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Jared Hudson - "One Spring Morning" (http://www.jaredhudson.com/music/Jared%20Hudson%20-%20One%20Spring%20Morning.mp3) [4 Seasons]
Jared has his second season-based composition in this vibrant original. Hanging out with Jared early this year let me know how much of a crazy bastard he is, but when he's not busy investigating the latest racing games, saying "pour over" in a German accent (!), hunting Bambi, learning from industry mover/shaker Chad Seiter, and studying at Berkelee, he's creating engaging pieces such as "One Spring Morning." As soon as I heard it, I was absolutely captivated by the beauty of this orchestral piece. It really emotes the traditional motifs found in other pleasant & upbeat scores like Princess Mononoke without coming across as utterly cliché. Mixed with more clarity, this would be deadly. It'll still put you in a satisfying coma.
Joshua Morse - Sonic the Hedgehog 1 "Marble Dash" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01365) [OC ReMix #1365]
Alright, so when I first heard this, I said to myself "This be groovy, but that piano sample be too fakey and so do the strings." They are too inhuman-sounding to me, but when you're presented with something this incredibly arranged, you just end up looking past it. I've heard Josh offer some very conservative AND very liberal mixes, so I was glad we had something right here that was right in the middle. Equal parts interpretation and complete originality, I was just amazed at this mix of Masato Nakamura's "Marble Zone". Described by djp as any combination of house, disco, and funk influences, some have decried this mix for being too long, while I say "Hell no! Make this 15 minutes!" At 6:20, the mix manages to evolve the whole way through. Relatively recent changes in the staff of OCR over the months allowed Joshua to reconsider submitting here again, and you'll certainly be glad for it.
Main Finger - CastleVania 1 & CastleVania 3 "Beware of the Stalker" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4344) [VGMix2 #4344]
CastleVania plus beats brings the groove bias like nobody's business here courtesy of Jesse Gregory. The arrangement is fairly simple and straightforward, starting off with techno beats and moving on to a string/piano duet before fusing the two ideas together for the finish. I won't lie, the first section is probably the best part in my opinion, but the material is classic and catchy which should be able to rope you in to give it a sample. So, you know...give it a sample.
Noir w/Brendan Evans, Nate Levin & Kevin Alexander - "City of Ruin & Rain" (http://www.seidonia.com/progrock/Eric%20Barker%20-%20City%20of%20Ruin%20and%20Rain.mp3) [Evidence of Weather]
Noir provides some subdued but progressive stuff with this 10+ min original that's rough around the edges but shows a lot of promise for an even fuller, more rehearsed version. Alongside "The Bright Path" (http://www.seidonia.com/progrock/Eric%20Barker%20-%20The%20Bright%20Path.mp3), these tracks are both studio demos from a crew Eric put together for his senior recital at the Oberlin Conservatory. Things really took a nice turn after the 6:30-mark, as these bros really hit their stride for the last few minutes. Could have used some more meat on the bones, but considering what the recording was put together for, this is some worthwhile stuff.
Reuben Kee - "A Piece of Heaven" (http://www.reubenkee.com/music/singles/A%20Piece%20Of%20Heaven.mp3) [http://www.reubenkee.com]
Hey, more woodwinds for ya. Reu pieces together some orchestral flavor for you just to make sure Jared's not the only one putting some your way for this week. The piano here is a little plinky and thin, but the overall presentation is relaxing and lush, adding to the mix some touches of New Age for the listener who needs everything. There were some nice subtle dynamic changes before a more pronounced increase in intensity was worked in at 3:36 with the arrival of some trademark instrumentation in Reu's repertoire. What can I say? The man can write, and he also does a great job of establishing a memorable style. Very fitting material for the ending of a game, is it not?
Starblaze - F-Zero 1 & F-Zero GX "Blue Blazes" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4354) [VGMix2 #4354]
WHAT IN BLAZES?! Evan Pattison is back once again with some electronica that satisfies the groove bias within me nicely. This stylish remix of "Mute City" takes the perennial favorite and weaves it with the F-Zero GX material of "Infinite Blue" as well as a story mode track. When the familiar Mute City melody kicks in, it's a slice of goodness, which only makes it unfortunate that it wasn't referenced more than once. Mr. Pattison, don't tease the community like this! Cool stuff, but I can't help demanding a new version called "Bluer Blazes" that features more of the Mute City-ness I came to expect. I'm just a bastard when it comes to wanting the old stuff. Get your fix of two different eras of F-Zero thanks to Starblaze.
Vurez - Megaman 6 "Flurry of Frozen Fury" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01366) [VGMix2 #3851 / OC ReMix #1366]
So I remember playing this one on my show when it hit VGMix and had djp listening to the show while chatting with him on the side. This "Blizzardman Stage" remix particularly caught Dave's attention. And while djpretzel readily and genuinely hands out props for the quality material that makes it on OCR, speaking as a staff member he's not one to go "Whoa!" a lot. The man's hard to catch off-guard and impress. So when Pretzel was won over by "Flurry of Frozen Fury", I felt good knowing that Don here would finally get posted on OCR as soon as he submitted it. A lil' nudge-nudge and here it is. Vurez already had a nice batch of MM6 mixes available at VGMix, and this one arguably outshines them all. For purely sequenced material, it's definitely punchy but incredibly sexy. Sax = sexy, folks. To the point, don't miss out on this one for any reason whatsoever.
Not TOO much going on this week, but some worthwhile selections came out nonetheless. Be seeing you, music lovers and haters.

Look ma, no hands. I did this report (including the typing) with my ears only. Are you not proud of me? I know I am. Now let's view the goods from June 19th to the 25th (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.11812) in order to achieve karmic alignment:
Adhesive Boy - Kirby's Adventure "Cosmic Transformations" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01369) [Rise of the Star / OC ReMix #1369]
Everything that Jack Ryerson does when it comes to ReMixes is few and far between which means that whenever he drops a track, you've gotta be there to pick it up. Welcome to the inaugural track to Rise of the Star (http://kirby.ocremix.org), the happiest OCR Site Project you could ever ask for. djp mentioned this one as having some dark undertones, but I don't think the sheer volume & power should be interpreted as dark. I remember telling Jack that I thought this was too loud and cluttered, and he got pissed off since it was an artistic decision, so don't tell him that. Just smile and nod at the kickass arrangement, some parts heroic, some parts quasi-industrial. If you're familiar with "Linoleum Stalactites" or "Cry of the Chasmal Critter Chain", AB knows all about being able to put complex, intricate work together that'll easily impress. Don't miss out on other tracks from DarkeSword's pet project including Suzumebachi's "The Ballad of Sir Kibbles" & analoq's "Creampuff Starship".
PICK OF THE WEEK: AkumajoBelmont f/Stephanie - Bust a Groove "Bust This Groove '81" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01368) [VGMix2 #3391 / OC ReMix #1368]
Hearing something like this completely legitimizes all the time I've spent in this community. I heard it a while back and played it on the radio show. Aussie cousins Robbie & Stephanie totally have the whole disco/roller rink/Jackson 5 thing down pat in this superlative take on Kitty N's theme "Blue Knife (Bust A Move Edit)". Cleaned up further since the VGMix version, I have to say once again, that I was incredibly impressed by not just the production, but by the idea of turning a futuristic source tune into something so unequivocally retro. If you don't like the genre, you smell. If you don't want to check it out because you don't know the game, you smell. And if you don't get it now because I said so, you smell worse than me.
DarK PurPLe - GoldenEye 007 "00 Agent Life" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4415) [VGMix2 #4415]
NICE! Bond with beats, loud and in your face! Such a sucker for this stuff in every way, as GoldenEye had such a great soundtrack. With nearly every track in the soundtrack being an arranged version of the Bond theme, the medleyitis of this mix is more forgivable as the track references one level after another within nearly 7 minutes. The mixing is far from Francis Veilleux Gaboury's best, as it's too loud and the high frequencies got cut off for no discernable reason, but it's the Bond theme in an electronic/club style. OMG, u have License to Listen!
DarkeSword - Megaman X4 "Searching for Light" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4379) [VGMix2 #4379]
Fellow OCR judge Shariq Ansari produces the next MMX mix in a now-lengthy series with this downbeat follow up to "The Father of All". The sampled Japanese vox didn't really fit the track well being that loud, but it's alright. This was kind of a darkly-themed mix that doesn't quite want to embrace that type of imagery but gets you feeling it with a moody atmosphere complete with male choir vox filling things out. This actually didn't hit me very hard on the first listen, as it genuinely almost struck me as a "throwaway" piece that didn't possess much impact. But therein lied the conundrum, for as the track unfolded, my interest only increased and I started digging the texture more and more. The soundfield was still a little sparse-sounding to me, but otherwise, I was pleasantly surprised by how the track developed. Not here to punch you in the face, this was quite the sleeper hit.
Das Karl Werk Projekt - "Elektro Lok (Allgemeine Frequenz)" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2734/Das%20Karl%20Werk%20Projekt%20-%20Elektro%20Lok%20%28Allgemeine%20Frequenz%29.mp3 ) [R:K:O #2734]
Alright, so the intro will likely leave you going "What the fuck?" but STAY with me, you asshole! You don't like robotic electronica, then get the hell out. The rest of you will pop and lok to this GROOOVY cut from Das Karl Werk Projekt for the win. Out of sheer ignorance, I can't even compare any other music to this. But analoq might be feelin' it and because analoq is someone who you fanboys aspire to be like, listening to this will be an important first step to making your life better than it ever was. Retooling the original "Elektro Lok" by Mark "Heinmukk" Waldaukat, this is probably the most unique thing I've heard out of Kwed and the C64 community in a while. Damn, DO THE ROBOT! DO THE ROBOT! You gotta get it-get it.
Depeche Mode f/tefnek - "I Feel Loved (tefnek Remix Extended)" (http://www.tefnek.com/music/remixes/depeche_mode_-_i_feel_loved_(tefnek_remix)_extended.mp3) [http://www.tefnek.com]
I covered the original remix earlier in the month, so we revisit those comments and perhaps...extend them...
Depeche Mode f/tefnek - "I Feel Loved (tefnek Remix)" [http://www.tefnek.com]
Jack Kirkpatrick takes an approach I'd yet to hear from him, remixing some mainstream a capella lyrics with his own material. I feel like the synths used here didn't stand out as unique, and I would have loved to have heard the lyrics a lot more prominently, but the beats are still dope and on a compositional level the music fit the lyrics like a glove. Personally, I dunno whether the music here is also remixed from the Depeche Mode original, but in any case this is one to scope out for more from OC's resident big beat champ.
Lengthened by almost 3 minutes, this new version definitely adds some new ideas to the picture that make the overall package more unique. If you passed up the opportunity on the prior offering, don't be such a dumbbutt this time. You don't wanna do that again. Please...let Jack feel loved.
Flik - "They Lumbered On" (http://www.vagstudios.com/audio/Flik_-_They_Lumbered_On.mp3) [Thematic Original Music Competition 2]
Chris Serani is a man. Chris Serani is a man's man. And only a MAN's man like Chris Serani could lay waste to the competition like this, not caring if it was fun-loving Trenthian, fair maiden pixietricks or crazy Aussie TO being leveled by this asskicking gloomy/mysterious forest theme. Yes, they lumbered on, but only one MAN truly lumbered like the best! You want rain SFX? You want beautiful ethnic percussion and woodwinds? Then you want this. "Chris Serani - Reason files the size of grapefruits!"
Ichitootah - The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang "Bat Cloud of Morning" (http://doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc44/PRCv2-18_Ichitootah_-_batcloudofmorning.mp3) [The People's Remix Competition v2-18]
Nice stuff here with the piano on the opening, along with some organ stuff that doesn't quite sound like something Adhesive Boy would do, but had some similarities. Some fairly upbeat stuff here for PRCv2-18 tackling Spike McFang's boss theme. The Casio-style keyboard and drumloops were meh, but the rest of the package had some good touches. The use of xylophones is always a plus, and there's even a non-sequitor key change around 3:10 just to mess with your head. Can't say it actually worked, especially because the last minute or so wasn't very well-written, but it is worth talking a look it.
JD Harding - Meganan 3 "Sparkman" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4361) [VGMix2 #4361]
JD's returned to VGMix in order to start revisiting and revising older material of his, starting off with this...creatively named...[looks around]...remix of "Sparkman Stage". The melody surprisingly doesn't play as much of a factor as I thought it would/should, and the synth design here was pretty lackluster to be honest. The soundfield was pretty cluttered, making sounds hard to distinguish from one another, but the main incentive for checking this out is to see how JD has reworked this older material for re-release. Especially if you were familiar with his former OC ReMixes before he had them removed, see what The Artist Formerly Known As Kendri now has up his sleeve.
LastUnicron - "Present" (http://www.sonicevolver.com/music/present.mp3) [http://www.sonicevolver.com]
Being so used to electronic material from Andy Wood, the last thing I expected when discovering a new original on his site was a piano-based opening. Now the cymbals added behind the piano are nothing but crappily added, doing nothing but exposing the disparity in sound quality between the cymbals and piano. Fortunately though, Unicron made up for it by transitioning into some other synthetic elements and interlacing them much more skillfully with the piano work. And some woodwind usage! What a nice present, y'all. (Get it...?) Short stuff that on some level sound underdeveloped, but it's good to heard LastUnicron still keeping 'em coming.
Makke - Dizzy the Adventurer "Mix Dizz" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01367) [VGMix2 #3798 / OC ReMix #1367]
Marcus is a refreshing artist in the community. Like I said when I judged this mix, he's one of the more consistent vocal mixers out there, but for some reason I don't even think of him as a vocalist. His music is usually so catchy on it's, I almost forget it's him. Makke is fearless; he has and will tackle any and all genres. Need some modernized doo-wop? He'll takes a random source tune from an NES game he never even heard of and he runs with the entire concept. While I've more commonly seen people in the community hating on lyricized mixes, I've been recently seeing a lot of people specifically gravitating toward them. Malcos thinks it's where a lot of future VG mixes are headed. So there you have it: join the wave of the future with OCR's resident Swedish superstar.
pixietricks - "The Rainforest Song" (http://www.fayhaven.com/The%20Rainforest%20Song.mp3) [http://www.fayhaven.com]
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Jill Goldin is CUTE! And I don't mean in that teenage crush kind of way, because while she's a beautiful lady, my girlfriend would kill me. We're talking about murder here. So let's figure out how to handle this without macking on adult Jill. Well, for those of you that have yet to get this track, you'll find not the lady singing in "Prayer" but a lil' kid! So CUTE! Indeed, the cuteness is revealed in this classic cut from lil' pixiesticks. Jilly sang this for the closing credits of a production her father made and it still sounds all cuddly and Star Search worthy today. The word "hamburger" is in there! How can you go wrong? So don't slash it and burn and cut it. Download it! (I amuse me!)
RoeTaKa - "A Hero Decides Fate" (http://www.remix.herograw.com/LordMaestro/A%20Hero%20Decides%20Fate.mp3) [http://www.soundclick.com/roetaka]
Alex releases something on the original side here with this brand new orchestral arrangement. Usually, Roe's pieces are too heavy on the volume, but while this was definitely loud, it wasn't ear-breakingly loud. Perhaps we're learning! While most of the phrasing here doesn't really produce anything melodic or driving, the composition here is somehow interesting. It really sounds like it would function well as background music for a large scope of combat simulation games, which is excellent. Noticeable dynamics were present as well, doing a nice job of lowering the energy level before building things back up. So despite there not being any real hook in the package, the track is really worth checking out. Even though I'm just creating a function for the track's form in my mind, it really works well as BGM and you could leave it on loop for quite a long period of time. Some of the best stuff I've heard from Roetaka yet that you can't miss.
Skrypnyk - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Vociferous Storm" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4385) [VGMix2 #4385]
You may be surprised, but I actually haven't heard too much straight trance in a while in this community, so Andy's latest actually took me by surprise. The melody doesn't actually kick in here until about 1:30, and even then it's kind of fighting to be heard. Took me a little while to realize it was "Bayou Boogie". For those expecting a hugely interpretive mix as far as the melody goes, nah. Skrypnyk mostly deals with a small piece of the pie in terms of the source material used here, but if you like the oomp-tss, you'll be in oomp-tss/electrosynth heaven.
TO - Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee "The Monsaic" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4394) [VGMix2 #4394]
There's nothing more indicative of skill than fashioning a lot out of a little, which is why I appreciate the arrangement involved in Lee Barber's latest from the never-covered-as-far-as-I-know Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Going the new age route with Ellen Meijers-Gabriel's "Monsaic Lines", TO goes for a delicate build over the course of the 5 minutes, with the only thing disturbing the peace being a potentially overbearing snare drum. Great job turning such a brief source tune into something a lot more substantial, so click the link and put some roo in your doo.
Vampire Hunter Dan - Chrono Cross & Chrono Trigger "To Times Once Forgotten" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4416) [VGMix2 #4416]
It's my understanding that some of you old-schoolers have been waiting patiently for new material from Vampire Hunter Dan. In the VGMix1 days, Dan Barnaba was someone you could turn to for consistency and professionalism. Luckily for you, VHD hasn't forgotten about the little people, fusing 5 arranged Mitsuda pieces into the orchestral behemoth you see before you. It builds, it declines, it makes your ears want more. At a (mere) 8:26 you'll get all the Chrono you can handle unless you're Zeality or some permutation thereof. In any case, Dan is back for one more and he's making sure you noticed.
XOC - Super Mario World 1 "Chocolate Island" (http://www.archive.org/download/xoc_SMW/xoc_SMW_16_chocolateisland_vbr.mp3) [SMW]
"Holy shit, have you heard of this stuff from XOC?" That's all I was hearing in post after post across several forums after the community at large caught wind of Jason Cox and his tribute to Koji Kondo in this swanky set of covers that are so thoroughly and uniquely stylized track by track that no two track approaches are similar. 21 tracks, 26 minutes, lots of ear candy. I picked "Chocolate Island" as my personal favorite for all the chocolate people around the world such as your humble Judge right here. Look, I do the work for you... Pick your poison. (http://www.archive.org/details/xoc_SMW) Man, if someone could make some looped copies of these...
zykO - Super Mario Bros. 1 "ReMix" (http://www.vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4404) [VGMix2 #4404]
Hahahahaha! Full Metal Jacket clip to open, so I've gotta stick around. weed handles some predominantly synth material in this thank you to VGMix featuring some lyrical bits and a nice cheesy tropical vibe. Oh that's pure fun! Judges aren't allowed to have fun, weed! Stop having fun! I'm always a fan of zyko's more serious work, but this has the "hoo-hoo" sounds in there non-stop and surf-style guitar. That's the way to close it.
Lots of Mario pimpage to end things. I'll make sure to feature more Burgertime for the next batch to balance things out. Now get a goin'!

I have to say, I believe Larry showed me the Rainforest Song as part of a conspiracy to woo me with all things adorable while he visited me recently. It worked. :)
You are one hella talented chica and it showed even then. I especially liked that collab you just did with Gray--one of the few remixes I have asked for Larry to send me for my personal music collection.

You gotta get it-get it.
i realize i'm 10 days late but still:

Someday, I'll have all the free time in the world. Until then, I plug away at the summer stuffs, this set of community releases from June 26th to July 2nd (http://oc.ormgas.com/forum_viewtopic.php?18.12016):
PICK OF THE WEEK: Dj Redlight - "inhibition" (http://www.djredlight.com/download.php?trackid=8) [http://www.djredlight.com]
Ashley Carr's mostly known for his Final Doom mixes, so to actually get the chance to hear some original work of his is a real treat. Red dropped not one, but FIVE new originals on his site this week, ensuring that if you take your time to sample things, you're highly unlikely to go unsatisfied. It's not February, but you can still enjoy the well-developed "dizzy valentine." With the sounds at Carr's disposal, he really reminds me a lot of Protricity's stuff. It's the kind of material Ari could have developed had he went more of a downbeat style and worked on integrating some acoustic guitar. For those looking for more of the techno-trance meat & potatoes, "epiphany" will hit you right. The beats were pretty tepid for some reason, but the groove be there. Sounds like something Leifo could make, only not quite as refined. Can't even stop talking yet. "inhibition" will please those of you going for melodic techno, so DO NOT pass it up. Awesome idea for the processed vox at 1:02, for example; just great development the whole way through. The key change at 2:43 might be hit or miss, but lemme say it was seamless. It was WITHOUT SEAMS. Wow, he needs to collab with any of the following OC ReMixers: bLiNd, Leifo, SGX, tefnek, or zircon. I'm just majorly impressed with the ideas here. Gotta move on to more pimpage, but go get the goods.
housethegrate - Megaman X1 "Light in the Fortress" (http://dod.vgmix.com/past/june05/housethegrate-MMX-Light-DoD.mp3) [Dwelling of Duels: Free Month (July 2005)]
Alex stood atop the competition in a loaded free month with a SWEET take on one of the Sigma Fortress theme from MMX1, showing off some electronic range I never knew he had. Having played the game a lot after getting zSNES, I can really appreciate house for giving a very underrated theme some well-deserved attention. It's got the original in there, it's got some nice synths and beats, it's got the geetar kwak...it's the champ! Don't forget the plugs for other strong DoD track this month including the best showing ever for a solo piano piece, Dhsu with 2nd place for his CastleVania 3 entry "A Clockwork Vampire," and some nice collab action tieing for the 4th place spot with Ailsean, Chad Seiter & Victor Lawrence on one side and Ashane & LuIzA on the other. More good stuff from evilsonic, Ryan8Bit, norg, zykO, Master Hatchet, Midee & prozax, XOC, and the long-awaited (by me) "Dragon Warrior Radio Drama 2" helmed by XMark.
Just Us f/DarkeSword - "One Step Forward (DarkeSword Remix)" (http://justusmusic3.com/music/onestepforward(remix).mp3) [http://www.justusmusic3.com]
Just Us is back with their usual thought-provoking, well-written verses, this time joined by resident OC ReMix judge, the deceivingly skilled hip-hop beat creator Shariq Ansari. One thing typical of Just Us, as well as other Urbanizm Music artists like Tony Montana, zyko, Malcos, and Skrybe, is that their lyrics are always so on point. Yet when you actually decide to listen to the lyrics underneath the flow, the content is there, the substance is right there on the page. With DarkeSword taking his turn adding beats, bass, e-piano and other bits & pieces, the texture is nothing but well-crafted and not your typical hip-hop instrumental. The quality of Just Us's material continues to take one step forward with each release. Those ready to enjoy a much more unique hip-hop experience are more than ready for Just Us.
Malcos - "I See" (http://urbanizmmusic.com/music/Urbanizm-Malcos-ISee.mp3) [http://www.urbanizmmusic.com]
Everytime I hear a new original from Stephen, I miss the understated but dedicated demeanor he had on the OCR judges panel. The first time I heard Stephen rhyme with his Street Fighter II remix "Throw Me a Tiger Uppercut," I'll admit, I didn't know he had that dimension to his material. But several Urbanizm Music releases later, Malcos's energetic, driven beats and absolutely gifted lyrics regarding the beautiful specimen known as "woman" have resulted in yet another mainstream-level original hit. The piano-driven hook that intros this track does nothing catch you off guard and leave you waiting to see how the track will unfold. The vocal harmonization here was excellent as well, and aside from wanting this to get some studio treatment (please), everything here leads me to believe that, in a perfect world, Stephen Malcom-Howell would be a UK-based multi-platinum millionaire with a womanizing reputation appropriately befitting his lady-obsessed lyrics.
Miguel F. Ettema - 1942 "Orchestral" (http://remix.kwed.org/download.php/2741/Miguel%20F%20Ettema%20-%201942%20%28Orchestral%29.mp3) [R:K:O #2741]
Ooooh, there's some spirited orchestral material from the Commodore scene. That's always the kind of stuff the C64 community needs. I'm always a fan of people there who take an unorthodox approach to material in the Commodore community, as they help broaden the offering there and help squelch the haters who bag on it for being nothing but electronica. OC ReMix knows how you guys FEEL! In any case, I never played 1942 much, but even so, Mark Cooksey's score for the game must be nothing but intriguing given the treatment Miguel's given it. All three subtunes of the original game's SID file have been tackled here in a very naturally woven medley piece that makes up in creativity and dynamics what it lacks in overly expensive orchestral instrument samples. The sound quality is definitely nothing to scoff at at all and definitely fits in with other people like Jeremy Robson, who's arrangements are always strong, despite not sounding like the real thing for the people who are actually that anal. Some pieces DO manage to pull it off. Good heroic vibes here that you should check out, even if you're wholly unfamiliar with the inspiration behind it. Hey, it doesn't stop me, does it?
Nixdorux - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening "The Sad Fish" (http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR01370) [VGMix2 #4019 / OC ReMix #1370]
Nicolas brings it out with the delicate touch for the orchestral enthusiasts, indeed connoting the concept of a sad fish, whatever that may be. If a fish cries in the ocean, how can you tell? It's tears can't be more salty than the water. And what about a freshwater sad fish? On a mystical, MUSICAL level, Nix actually tackles these and other tough questions. If you're looking for a rich and emotive rendition of one of the newer highly-mixed themes in the community, this one does a great job of introing sparsely and delicately before adding other instruments to the ensemble. And the peeps that like curveballs in their ReMixes will love and appreciate the turn the track takes about 3/4s of the way through. Those who want their music to tell a story, you look no further than here.
The OneUps - Super Mario Kart "Koopa Beach" (http://www.oneupstudios.com/dnld.php?file=demos%2F02KoopaBeach.mp3&seq=6a97ead830fdefa180985d5a8b4d3263) [The OneUps: Volume 1]
After years of Mustin hoping to have a OneUp Mushrooms album, this summer has made that goal a reality with OneUp Studios most ambitious project yet. After streamlining both their name and their lineup, the OneUps attempt to bank on their reputation within the VGM remixing community and, more importantly, build a reputation and a fanbase outside of that community with their debut album (http://www.oneupstudios.com/albums.php?show=9). I spotlighted "Koopa Beach" for its overall swankyness and smoothness, but there's a bunch of winners on here, many of them giving off a jam band atmosphere. The Bomberman track in particular is a huge expansion of the original, and others like "Michael's Theme" from Maniac Mansion and the new classic "Katamaritaino" from Katamari Damacy are sure to grab your attention as well. There's a bunch of jazzy cuts on the album, but dem OneUps rock it out as well with a nasty rock rendition of "Koopa's Theme" from Super Mario 64. And for those of you really familiar with OC ReMix, there's even a cover of po!'s Axelay ReMix "City Lights." Along with their CD, Mustin & crew are making the summer and fall rounds at both vgXpo & Video Games Live!, looking to make an impact and score the $$$ like we all dream of but can never hope to accomplish! Support them OneUps and buy their CD before they BlowUps.
Pixelated - Demon's Crest "Kill Your Children" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4458) [VGMix2 #4458]
Phil is a role-model, and don't you forget that. The beats kick in at :27 after some downright "WTFux" intro material. I'm just a huge fan of the breakbeat loops and sliced and diced effects. This is definitely bringing it if you like the crazy shit. If those damn rugrats of yours are acting up again, jumping on your bed and breaking the damn mattress, you grow a pair, listen to this on loop and KILL YO' CHILLUNS! (Note: The following review conclusion is not officially endorsed by Larry Oji. Larry does not, in fact, want to kill your children. MJ does, in fact, want to touch your children.)
pixietricks f/Rayza, Aurora & Fusion2004 - "RayzaMix" (http://www.fayhaven.com/RayzaMix.mp3) [http://www.vgdj.net]
Hahahahaha! Oh God, yea! Friggin' awesome! Starting off with simple beats and pads, pixietricks has ROFLed it again, this time sampling your VGDJs in this conceptual sequel to The wingless's "AuroraMix." I'll never get how the guys y gals here manage to take random vocal clips and make something musical out of them. Even the clips with music in the background generally work, which is a great coincidence given that you KNOW no effort was put into making all those little details sound good. This was awesome stuff that actually built the track gradually, predominantly with Rayza samples but also some judicious yet aurally stimulating usage of VGDJ co-host Aurora. You heard it here, thine lady pixie gives The wingless a run for his dirty little mind in this gem of a joke mix.
po! - Balloon Fight "da craziest balloon" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4438) [VGMix2 #4438]
Posu Yan be groovin' it with the Balloon Fight. Yet another piece of original VGM I didn't know until I heard of virt, Balloon Fight has some pimp tracks that get NO coverage at OCR. The original is some of the catchiest stuff around, you dumb bastards! po tackles the theme with some of the ever-familiar Posu groove. The arrangement is pretty conservative, so the goodness of the original isn't spoiled at all. Pretty good groove for the most part, though I thought some of the ideas in the latter half weren't hot, namely 2:46. Then things started to just get repetitive. :-( Pretty disappointing finish, but still not shabby. Balloon Fight needs and deserves your love.
Roetaka - "Rebellion" (http://www.soundclick.com/util/downloadSong.cfm?ID=2583987) [http://www.soundclick.com/roetaka]
Alex get down and dirty with some thick beats and grungy, grimy synths. The intro was pretty lackluster, but things picked up at :14. Oy, dat volume be loud, and you can't pick much apart, but the groove is there and it wants to be appreciated. Some good stuff going on during the section at :54 to change up the feel a bit. Despite the fucked up cluster of sounds, there were some other nice motifs involved, though at 2:30 the track seemed to retread itself. The basic percussion was a repetitive aspect here; heard the same beat patterns going most of the way. Nonetheless, it sounds rather Perfect Dark multiplayer style for anyone desperate for a relevant VGM analogy.
Saxman - "Tequila" (http://www.shadowsoft-games.com/saxman/songs/Tequila%20%28192%29.mp3) [http://www.garageband.com/artist/damiangrove]
Damian provides some old school stuff with a double shot of classics, "The Heart of Rock & Roll" (http://www.shadowsoft-games.com/saxman/songs/The%20Heart%20Of%20Rock%20&%20Roll%20%28192%29R.mp3) and his featured song this week, "Tequila." While I'm implore Sax to provide more sax during the verses, the "Heart of Rock & Roll" cover hit the cheesy spots well with some backing chords from that instrumental that I can't put my damn finger on. Damn keyboard styles. I'm ALL OUT OF MY ELEMENT. Sax tends to make his vocals a bit too low, so he should punch them up, but other than that, some decent stuff for those of you who remember the 80s. "Tequila" was where the REAL action was, taking full advantage of the saxamaphone you've been looking for. Very loopable and full of energy. Straightforward and fun stuff you can DL for the quick & dirty.
Strike911 - Dead or Alive 1 "Helena's Trance" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4388) [VGMix2 #4388]
Jase K’s got some pretty cool trance going on. The grooves are pretty basic, and the production needs some sharpness, but the energy is good, and has some tasteful voice SFX sampling. Not much else to say, but that's not on account of the track being poor at all. Certainly worth that look, and solidly put together for shakin' it in your favorite European club. The excellent tracks from the Dead of Alive series really deserve most attention.
TO - "By Your Galactic Might" (http://doulifee.com/prc/Orc/ORC24/ORC24_TO_-_By_Your_Galactic_Might.mp3) [Original Remix Competition 24]
Lee takes down the honors for ORC24 with this winning take on one of Ichitootah's originals. The strange world of the space genre is embraced here with some driving beats, warm vox, and all sorts of phasing, warping sounds. The introduction led me to believe this wouldn't be overly hot (though I LOLed at that clip; Is that Vincent Price?), but once things kicked in at :27, it was all uphill and apropo and oui oui, and all that. A bit on the loud side, but good stuff for the groove bias lover in all of us.
trickwaters - Lufia: The Legend Returns & Lufia: The Ruins of Lore "Riposo" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4444) [VGMix2 #4444]
Patrick goes back to some of the more bread and butter ideas that I recall seeing him post to VGMix when I first heard his name in the scene, i.e. posting several different movements that are all mixes from one particular game or game series, in this case material arranging two Game Boy entries from the Lufia series. The instrumentation is noticeably synthetic sounding and more exposed than Miguel Ettema's aforementioned 1942 remix this week (check out that brass note hanging at the very end), but the arrangement is still great, especially for someone looking for a relaxing classical music-style piece. Aside from the instrumentation not being der uber-samples, the composition here would easily fit in with other classical and orchestral music compositions featured on the FM stations that are early, early, early on the FM dial, making this, in my opinion, a very successful genre piece. That likely isn't the intent mind you, but you never know. Very intelligent stuff for those that want to feel cultured. Good stuff from Mr. Waters with another trick up his sleeve.
Ubik - Splatterhouse 1 "Graveyard Shift" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=3126) [Four Mullet Tire / VGMix2 #3126]
Brian leads the Auld Lang Sine 2 (http://als.ubikmusic.org) charge with this self-described "early 90s dance music style" cut from his latest album for Hellven's now-traditional album creation initiative. Hitting some obscureness (made up a word) from the TurboGrafx-16 (yeesh), Ubik oughta to have called this "Zombie Be Shakin' That Thang." Nice work going for that throwback feel and creating a real winner for what's sure to be a great turnout once again over at Hellven. Glad to see more material from Ubik. Much like DoD, ALS is a good vehicle for getting otherwise missing-in-action artists to take the plunge and give the peoples more material.
X-formZ - Ghost Battle "The Haunted" (http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=4423) [VGMix2 #4423]
I'm never a big fan of mechanical sounding piano, so the intro's not hot to me, but the chill groove here was excellent. The melody coming in at :41 is a pure gem, and doubling it at 1:02 only served to create an even better texture. The production is a little rough and could sound cleaner, but I was really feeling the arrangement here and kept on looping it. This was actually pretty upbeat and cheerful; certainly quite the contrast with the title of this Amiga remix. Some trademark X-formZ guitar action joined in at 2:28 to keep the texture evolving. The ending was abrupt (FOR SHAME!), but other than that, the arrangement had a lot going for it. I'd love to see this one handled with more polish, definitely, but you've really gotta check it out. Dimmignatt & Floaf have some ways to go in really being a polished act, but they're consistent in bringing promising material to both the R:K:O and VGMix scenes.
We'll live to pimp section another day. I'm gonna go listen to "Krystallyne" (http://www.thewingless.com/music/misc13.htm) by The wingless…

It's Betruger from Doom 3.
Also, I agree with Larry on the DJ Redlight front. If you haven't already, go to his site and download the mp3's he has up there. People usually charge money for music of that quality, so enjoy while you can. "Secret Symphony of Life & Death" is a personal favourite.

Woot, I'll have to quit my job so I can stay up 5am onwards to hear this damn show! Or just wake up very early...that's even better. Good to see it back in any case, definately was a highlight when I had the chance. Good to see Larry's reviews back, it's harsh to see him comment on my loudness, I have finally moved on from that phase!

Well, there goes my internet connection. On the other hand, one of my favourite pastimes is back- listening to Larry making scary unintelligible sounds. That's normal, right?
And so that plots my timetable for the next few Sunday mornings:
Saturday Morning to afternoon time: Take time out in the music labs as usual
5PM: Return home and get a chinese
around 6PMish: Go to sleep for a bit
Sunday 2:30AM: Get awoken by alarm, boot up comp and listen to VGF; do phone-in if some kind of occasion was going on
Rest of Sunday: Survive in Music Labs with lots of hot chocolate...
...but whatif I'm too excited to sleep? 8O

The rumors finally come to an end!
Ladies and Gentlemen. I'm proud to bring you some great news with the following sentences. But first of all, let us celebrate alltogether with a friggin loud "HELL YEAH!" to the following thing:
VG Frequency officially started with Season 5!
Nope, it's not a dream. And you didn't dream that either that last saturday (10th September) was officially the first show of the new season (VGF#61). It was a sudden thing and only a handful of peeps knew what's going on till it was too late. But it was the first official show after the "death of VG Frequency" in May 2005. *though I missed it myself*
 BACKROUND INFOS:
I had Larry on the phone in the last hour and I asked him a bit about his sudden decitions. He recently moved back to Atlanta cause he didn't know whether to stay at home, or be with his girlfriend. And even though he graduated from Emory campus, he still has access to the WMRE studios as "guesthost". From his final words from VGF#60.99 (that were available as bootleg shortly after the 24+h marathon) it was clear that VGF will and still lives on in his heart, his friends even secretly tried to get VGF on the road again - but it seemed like it was over forever.
Now Larry kicks back with a brand new season. On the phone he told me that he wants to at least "keep it up till December on a regular basis". Which means: Saturday Evening is reserved for VG Frequency. At the usual place, the usual time - and unfortunately at the same old stream (RealMedia).
So to all VG Frequency fans out there, gather again and give a warm welcome to our long missed (now hopefully relaxed) and "sexiest" radiohost from the other side of the globe.
Welcome back Larry Oji, with VG Frequency!!!!
Now that this is out, I can start the old riff-raff again, too. Hell yeah, nothing really changed anyway.
Tune in at 10pm (saturday, GMT-5/EST, Atlanta, GA). Here's a small overview of the most salient timezones (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/) for you.

 Torrent (www.studio-compyfox.de/torrent) batches need seeds again. I'm actually helping out VGDJ to save some bandwidth. If you want the old shows for some nostalgic issues, please ask around if someone could seed in my place. Thanks.
 The missing shows are still in editing. Larry needs to get back to it again as soon as he has a bit more space on his Laptop HDD. We plan a full release (VGF#50 till VGF#60.99) in torrent form in the next weeks. We'll keep you informed.
 Unfortunately bad news too: Restreaming via Shoutcast isn't possible for me anymore. Hereby goes a big "sorry" to the users on dialup.

The stream seems to be greatly improved over last semester. Panned correctly, volume's just right (I just had my speakers up too loud from CompoST 50) and only buffered twice (and during both times I was uploading crap to our server).

VG FREQUENCY Show #63 - TONIGHT, 10pm EST till "open end"
On a sidenote:
Even though we know that you "love" VGF and like to call in, it doesn't need to be a habit to delay the show to an over 6+ hour span, like it is done lately. Please, Larry likes to do VGF as you like to listen to it. But last time he was in the studio for almost half a day again - not counting the day before he held the show. I guess it's only fair to let him get some sparetime and especially sleep, too. ;)

But more importantly, I want to jabber on the air for a bit.

Not even AIM works? Damn, they don't have to give access to filesends, but normal text chat should be possible. As if this is "such a bad thing" - you can get more viruses and trojans due to homepage surfing than you'd ever get in AIM/ICQ and IRC alltogether.
Security at the wrong places, definitly.
I can't connect to IRC either, but that's because someone on campus has a trojaned machine and Technology Services is too ineffective to do anything about it. I've been G-lined from two networks in the past month because everyone on campus is NATed through the same IP address, so if one person gets banned for having a trojan IRC bot, everyone loses access. :(
At least I can still listen, though. I should fly to England and listen to it together with Rexy.

In other news, rememeber that important topic I needed to call in on? It's gotten even more important. I have a message for the entire scene that I think they need to hear. I hate being serious but I think this is necessary.
I'll also be there mainly for the hype for the Splendid Performance finals, and hopefully the Tornado of Solos. Seriously, wtf; five entries? :?

I had something written out, presuming a set of quirky thoughts concerning OUS peoples' reactions to soft feedback, but then again zircon pretty much said it :o A three-way call would have been awesome though, to further boost the drama theme of last night's show.

It wasn't hatin', If anything it was retrospect. My point kinda got lost on the fact that I spent too much time on other topics to get my thoughts together for that specific one. Basically, in short, there is no "right way" to write music and I felt that by offering any sort of tutorial on a subjective topic is retarded, and to try and get away with it by saying "this isn't the gospel" doesn't work because frankly idiots will see it and use it like one. =(
To cry about it and say I quit is also funny shit.

Yes, because reverb controls are REALLY subjective topics. Obviously, an overdrive effect preset for one person is different for another person. Have you even bothered to *read* anything I wrote? They're mostly "basics" guides and simple techniques that have been thoroughly explored and written about for years. All I'm doing is writing them in the ReMixing forum and putting them into a practical context for hobbyist musicians. Interestingly, I don't see you posting in that forum, helping the ReMixers here, or doing much of anything at all on this website. So why do you even care? It seems to me like you just joined the bandwagon with JM + po of hating on a non-OUS musician.
If there was an ounce of truth to what you were saying, maybe you wouldn't have made a fool of yourself on the air last night to everyone that was listening.

JM and Po! aren't OUS musicians fag. Next point, Reverb is entirely subjective to the song. So is how to write a power ballad but I'm sure if I ask you'll tell me exactly what I'm looking for.

Next point, Reverb is entirely subjective to the song.
Ultimately, it's up to you to decide what sounds should have reverb, and in what amount. It also depends on whether or not the recordings you are dealing with had any reverb recorded (or if they were recorded "dry" - eg. no natural ambiance), or if you are dealing with recorded sounds atall. Before I give some more etcetc
If you're going to criticize a tutorial, kaijin, please read it first.

Ah, "fag". You're such a mature fellow.
OverCoat is right. You didn't read it. I list a handful of before/after examples for reverb (for example) but the vast majority of it is what a reverb DOES, actually. Again, very simple stuff.

Kaijin please stop starting shit
First of all, I wasn't even talking about a stupid reverb tutorial in the first place. He brought the subject of a tutorial on reverb up (which is a pointless topic to give a tutorial about, mind you). Secondly, I wasn't "starting shit". I was more reffering to the stupid things I've read him post about various sample libraries that were supposed to be "helpful" to people, or his advice to others regarding what they should or shouldn't use.
Also you seem to be misinformed if you think any of this has to do with OneUp. Josh was never part of OneUp, and Po! is no more part of it than DJPretzel.

Interesting that you say it's a stupid topic, because a whole lot of people requested I write about it. And as a judge, I hear a lot of songs that use reverb in a way that's sloppy, or they don't use it at all - ALL the judges can testify to this, so it's not just me. I figured it would be helpful it include it on a topic covering "effects", and clearly a lot of people agree with me on that.
I can't think of where I've told people what libraries to use. And why would you bring this up now, after the fact, even if I did? Do what normal people do. If you see something you disagree with, post about it.

"as a judge dur dur dur". I could write a novel on how judging music isn't within any of our grasps and how you or anyone else shouldn't be allowed to do it, but I'll save that rant for another time. Again I don't care about your reverb tutorial or the reasons you wrote it. The concept of reverb and how it's used is not hard to figure out with active listening. Oh hey there's a topic why don't you write a "tutorial" about that while you're at it.
My original point was that I've seen you post idiotic things which I'll go ahead and sum up here
zerkhan: "i know everything about orchestral and choir samples"
virt: "you are a stupid fuck i hope you die (http://virt.vgmix.com/you-are-a-stupid-fuck-i-hope-you-die.mp3)"
Dale: "So say I'm writing orchestral pop; In you opinion do you see yourself reaching for this library if for example (insert exactly what he wants to know here)"
zerkhan: "i don't write pop ballads, but i still know everything about them. Since i know so much more about them than you, Dale Mr. Pop Ballad North, i will tell you how it SHOULD be done."
Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate you or think you're stupid or anything. I just think you say some dumb stuff occasionally and it's very funny but at the same time can really hurt other people who don't know any better. =(
Why did I speak up about it now? Well maybe to raise some self awareness that people may actually listen to what you're saying and that maybe you shouldn't come off as so opinionated on topics you even admit to yourself you don't know very much about.

There's certainly room for criticism, but I think Zircon is getting much too much attention in this regard, and indeed unfair criticism mingled with other stuff. His tutorial is what it is, a good entry point for beginners. It's no Holy Grail, and he isn't making it out to be.
I do understand the concern here noted by po, josh and kaijin on the matter, but the guide is what it is - nothing more. I'm not even sure I'd call this a guide or tutorial. It's almost more of a canon/group of information that I think is beneficial for novice mixers. Like I said, I understand the concers and can agree on some level. However, there are concerns that Zircon isn't experienced enough to write these things, but if he isn't who can or will? No one has done so, since Jivemaster. I don't agree one has to necessarily be a legend in the scene or have a degree in music to write something of this nature either. Accessibility of information of this nature and of this level is certainly most helpful for the majority of people - remember, most mixers in the scene haven't been around for more than a few months/year or two. I feel anyone who can consistently get several mixes up at OCR is capable of writing guides on the topic. Again, it is what it is. I don't have a doubt that the good of his "guide", ultimately outweighs the bad here.
As far as the other issues, if you have something to say about his recommendations, etc. Those are probably better dealt with in the remixing forum or out of this thread.
Everyone just chill. Things got a bit heated above and it's better not to involve our moderation if possible. Let's move on before this escalates.

Nah, you're misreading into things. Anyone who has demonstrated abilities or knowledge, certainly can write one, however, getting mixes posted consistently is tangible proof of a certain level of understanding. We're talking about basic guides here, not rocket-science.

I have no tracks (I don't count that PE Remix as "own" track) on OCR, but engineered a bunch. Does that mean I'm inferior? Does that mean I'm also a noob? Actually your words are very misleading and also a bit threatening. Please don't try to talk yourself out of it.
