Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy 9 'Knights Come Marching Home'
Ants come marching home? What the heck? Oh! Jebus Cripes! It's Frog's theme done in electric guitary goodness! Tasty. I had to actually describe this mix for a friend of mine, because he didn't believe that there was any FF9 in it.
As near as I can tell (I barely played FF9) the "storyline" of this mix goes as such:
0:00-0:49: marching ants
0:49-1:18: glenn's theme
1:18-1:46: ff9 battle
1:46-2:14: glenn's theme
2:14-2:32: marching ants
Anyways, good mix. Highly recommended, get it. Now. Right now. Go get it! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!

One thing Ailsean pointed out in his VGmix comments for this song was that, during the reprisal of Glenn's Theme, the countermelody is actually Melodies of Life. just thought I'd point out that apparently little-known factoid.

This song is great, and and even though it's not using the most realistic sounds, the melody is kick ass. Frog's Theme is one of the best songs from Chrono Trigger, and it goes well with FF9 battle. So hats off Aislean.

The song is great, but it left me hungering for a full-on electric guitar Frog remix. I want just Frog!

"Genius!" cried the Omen.
Ailsean is one of my favorite remixers on this site. This was the first of his I downloaded. Frog's theme, so beautifully done... I almost cried. Almost. The Melodies of Life countermelody was brilliant as well. Now I'm addicted to Ailsean's music. Think there's a support group for this sort of thing?

UHHHH, FF9 Battle? Am I the only one who's played FF9? That's no battle theme. That's a remix of "The Loss of Me", played when Beatrix is around. Actually there is a time where Steiner and Beatrix fight alongside each other. There's a more heroic version of The Loss of Me played during that part (which sounds like the method used in this mix). Ah yes, that was a good part in the game.
Anyway, just thought I'd clear that up unless by some weird twist of fate I'm wrong, and to say this is definitely a song that sticks in your head (Very weird "factoid" that counterpart is. I never noticed it until right now)

This is great. Most people know the theme, but then when it transitions (flawlessly) to frog's theme, it loses most people but makes Chrono Trigger fans smile in recognition. I also like how it always keeps the marching quality.

That overdrive guitar rocks! Yup, this mix is all about the transition effects. Very well done. I'm familiar with the themes that make this song and that's a plus to really see how the transitions are well made.
Good one from Ailsean.

Excellent mix.
DJP was right, that drum beat really does stick in your mind.
I also had no idea that 'Melodies of Life' was the countermelody for Glenns theme. Woah.
Anyway, Good work. :D

This is just one of those pieced I think deserve to be distrubuted on a CD and payed for. Everything on this track is just amazing. After listening to it several times, I noticed the Melodies of life. I wasn't sure that's what it was completely, but then I saw someone mention it here, and my theory proved corrent. Anyway, back on topic, I wouldnt ask you to change a single thing, and I don't think Mitsuda or any of the others would either.

A great combination of some great songs. I especially loved when Frogs theme came raging in. Glenn was totally my hero. I wish I were some wannabe hero who gets turned into a frog by the Magus and Ozzy...
....Maybe if I meet Ozzy I can ask him to turn me into a frog.

Actually, the FF9 "loss of me" part is considered a completely different song, called "I must protect"... anyways, it's a great mix... the transitions were seamless, and like all Ailsean mixes, the guitars were amazing... However, there is an updated version of this mix floating around! It used to be on VGMix, but now that VGMix is down, I have no idea where you can find it... It's called "The Knights Come Marching Home... Again" :)

I thought i was watching a bombing scene from Dr Strangelove at first but then it broke into Frog's theme and it was god. Johnny would be very proud of this.

Hey. I would just like to say that I'm a big fan of Uematsu's work from FF9, and the mixing in of Zidane's theme is extremely well-handled. It was a brave decision to mix it with something from Chrono Trigger, but it was done well with Frog's Theme. I'll be listening to this again...!!

I just had to post and tell Ailsean what a great idea it was to combine all three of those "heroic" type of songs together. They all flowed well together, you can really feel the heroic aura in this one, great job.

Ailsean, you have TOTALLY outdone yourself this time! Great job on this mix. All of the music from CT rocked and this took it to a whole new level! I also like the celtic sound to the beginning! :)

This song is... awesome. There are so many other positive adjectives to describe it... uh.... seamless. There's one describing the transitions. Hm... Electric. There's one describing the ass-kickin guitar that plays through a good half (maybe more) of the song. Well, go to Star Road in SMW to see some other "Way Cool" adjectives that describe this awesome, seamless, electric (??) song.

Whoo-HOO!
This is another of those soul-catapulting remixes that made me fall for the Chrono Trigger/Cross sections of this site. The Marching Ants startup is a great way to slide in fairly subtly, before EXPLODING into yummy FROGNESS! Frog's theme is my favorite song from Chrono Trigger, and I'm sad that there aren't more remixes of the piece, but what there is here is wonderful, and Ailsean, who I first heard of with "Nikki Learns a Song," outdoes himself with this rendition.
I don't recognize the FF9 piece, probably because I never played it, but it fits in seamlessly with the other guitary goodness on this song.
I can't believe it; I'm headbanging by the return of the Glenn theme, and I'm a Backstreet Boys fan. O_O
10/10, along with a vote for MORE FROG REMIXES!

After being a member of these boards for goodness knows how long I'm finally posting a review. I'm a lazy slack-bitch, yes I know but better late than never.
What better way to start than giving my most awesome rating to Ailsean's Remix of not one, not two, but three songs; When Johhny COmes Marching Home/Frog's Theme/Losing Me Is Not An Option.
FF9 was never my favorite FF, but it had a great score because lets face it, Uematsu is a god. But like I heard someone else state on these boards before, you're in for a great treat when you mix CT and FF soundtracks together. ANd indeed they were right.
This definitely goes down as one of my favorite remixes of the site. I'm not some technical instrumentation guy. I'm just a guy who likes good muic that would have it's place in a great movie or a video game. I could definitely see this in a game.
Two thumbs up, 10/10, 5 stars...whatever. This song kicks many an ass.

Ailsean continues to amaze me. Great fusion of two awesome songs. He's mastered the idea of using electric guitar for the main melody, which has yet to be anything but flawless.

Definitly awesome, it really does capture the 'heroic' aura of things. However, Steiner's theme is a bit weak compared to Frog's, it might be better if it could be brought out a little bit more; more accompaniment, different lead instrument, different dynamics, whatever. Still, this rules.

Truely a great mix. The guitar is high-quality, and the flute (at least I'm pretty sure it is a flute) does a nice job keeping the same mood as the guitar. My favorite part is with Steiner's theme, when the guitar kicks in for the first half. It's a solid yet very rough sounding guitar, which is just the way I like it. My only complaint is just a preference one, and it's the fact that sometimes the guitar sounded a bit too 'soft' in my opinion, meaning it seemed to roll more than hit. I don't know if that made sense however.
Anyway, this mix gets a rating of 9/10, -1 for the parts the guitar seemed to get soft. :P

One of my personal favorites, since it contains (in my humble opinion) the best Frog's Theme remix on the whole site.
Could have done without Steiner's Theme though. I woulda preferred to use another Chrono Trigger theme, say, Guardia Castle: Courage and Pride, but then again I'm not good enough to make my own music, and thus have to rely on the efforts of others.
Still, two thumbs up all the same. :D

I'm glad for all the positive responses this song has garnered since I made it. I like knowing I've made some people happy :) Thanks!
Also, I wanted to link to the update, so people can hear that version as well, so here's a copy/paste of my post from the "in-progress and completed" forum:
Normally I wouldn't go spamming a new release on messageboards, but I still get e-mail from people who like the old version of this song, and they rarely know there's a "completely re-made-from-scratch-and-much-better" version because it wasn't handily available for download for very long. So I figured I'd link to the updated version.

I really liked that piece that you made there and was wondering what music program you used for it? Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger are considered master pieces. You only added to its perfection to which I applause to.
The way the base kicks in at the beginning of the song is great and nice drum work too. :)
This put a big smile on my face. After having a great day I came home and downloaded song and just had a good laugh. It sounds great and brings back almost lost memories of a much younger me.

I stand corrected. Well maybe I was gushing a bit.
Hm. Compare eh?
To be perfectly honest, if it aint broke, don't fix it. The new version is fancier, and it does have better sound quality as well as more creative arrangement. However, when the flute and strings changed so dramatically, I found that the bass and guitar, which were at least similar to the originals, felt slightly out of place. This may be because I'm used to the first version, but yeah, just seemed a little akward.
Now, the new version is better, no denying it, but not by much.
Still, good work. Cheers.

I love this! This is great... I'd just like to mention the fact that the FF9 song in the Remix is NOT Steiners Theme, it is "Protecting my Devotion" also known as "Beatrix and Steiner". (I know, minor technicality, but y'don't wanna confuse those who have never played it.)

This is his fourth best song from the CT series. The Furthest Promise, Nikki Learns a Song, Radical Punks, and then Knights. I love Glenn's Theme, but Far Promise is the one of the greatest songs to come out of CT.

I downloaded this one a while ago, and just started my posting account today...
As far as this song goes, I was blown away the first time I heard it. The woodwind at the beginning (not too good on identifying those) was an excellent intro. The next part hit my heart as I my strongest backgrounds are British and Irish... I think those were bagpipes... right? Anyway, that was COOL!
As the Guitar broke out, I had my speakers turned up loud, as I usually do, and I had one of the most spasmic cases of shivers rack my spine.
My GOD! I LOVE this Remix.

Since when did Frog and Steiner march with Jonhy? When Johmy comes marching home, I didnt expect him to need an escort...However, it makes a really good song...only wish it was longer though...that seems to be the bad part of a lot of songs though...not long enough. But this is really good. Its up there with so many other songs. Just really good.

Isnīt that ant marchingsong from "Antz"?
Itīs was a total surprise when the frog theme just came rushing in with a very good electric guitar, which was followed by Loss of me with the same amount of ass-kick ass the previous. great stuff, but should really a movie track be in a game remix? I dont know... :?
OmegaDonut
10-15-2005, 04:11 AM
Technically this type of mix wouldn't be accepted any more because of a new policy:
Any incorporation of non-game music (mainstream, classical, etc.) should be very limited and should never carry significant portions of the mix. For example, a Mega Man mix that used Beethoven's 9th symphony for its chorus, where 15-25% of the mix was not from the game itself, would likely be rejected.
But this mix gets to stay because of the grandfather clause, and won't likely be ReMoved in the next lockdown.
As for the mix itself... uh, the people on the first few pages got it right. That FF9 ditty that plays is clearly not Steiner's Theme, but a double-time rendition of "Loss of Me\Rose of April or May or November or whatever the hell the month is".

I really like some of your samples, especiall your guitar, flute, strings sample in v2. The drum sample is a bit tricky .. I don't particularly like your marching band drum for Johnny but it certainly fits the mood. Great transitions.
Nice work! :nicework: Playlisted!

This is another one of those remixes that I loved without knowing squat about the game (though I should kick myself up and play Chrono Trigger). I love how it starts sort of small from a traditional song to this amazing rocking melody. Love that guitar. I just wanna dance to it: elaborate moves, jump, spin, waving a sword around. Very well structured, with a clear exposition, development (best part), back to where it started and just sort of fades. It's not a new effect, but you can never go wrong with it. Definitely one of the best of yours I've heard, Ailsean.

That song is actually called "Soldiers Go Marching", or "Ants Go Marching". It's a really old song (much older than Die Hard 3 ;)) that I'm surprised you didn't hear back in, like, elementary school or Merrie Melodies cartoons.

Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy 9 'Knights Come Marching Home'
Ants come marching home? What the heck? Oh! Jebus Cripes! It's Frog's theme done in electric guitary goodness! Tasty. I had to actually describe this mix for a friend of mine, because he didn't believe that there was any FF9 in it.
As near as I can tell (I barely played FF9) the "storyline" of this mix goes as such:
0:00-0:49: marching ants
0:49-1:18: glenn's theme
1:18-1:46: ff9 battle
1:46-2:14: glenn's theme
2:14-2:32: marching ants
Anyways, good mix. Highly recommended, get it. Now. Right now. Go get it! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!
1:18-1:46 isn't FF9 battle.. it's Beatrix's theme

A very nice guitar tune. For some reason it reminds of a nursery rhyme. Great stuff
Pretty weak samples, but the guitar playing more than makes up for it. Short and sweet, this is a pretty decent mix, though the production hasn't aged particularly well.
