Hi,
I've been visiting OCR and the forums for ages, but decided to go a little beyond that by sharing a little project I've been playing with in my free time. Nothing pretentious.
It's a simple web game featuring some tunes from classic 8-bit and 16-bit video games. You listen to the tune and try to guess the game. Both well-known classics and more obscure songs are represented. We have a specialist crowd here, so I think we should expect pretty high scores! :-P
It's kinda of beta right now, probably there are bugs. Comments, suggestions and bug reports are very welcome. I hope you have fun:

Some selections that I recalled, I was not expecting, either.
Would I be correct in guessing there are no TG-16 selections, though?

I got 22 (44.0%). Some of them I could guess what system they were on based on the types of sounds playing.
26%. I got numbers 3,7,8,9,10,13,17,20,23,35,39,45,48. Also, #48 is not using the name of its US release! Had me stumped for the longest time...

Polo, stop cheating for other people, revealing on the boards is not cool man...this was a problem on vgmq before the designer changed the system as to prevent cheating like this.

Came out of it with a score of 31 (1,6,7,8,9,10,12,15,16,17,18,19,20,22,23,24,26,27, 28,29,32,33,34,35,38,39,42,43,45,46, and 49), and there are several I'm certain I know, but their games aren't coming to me... namely 2,3,5,37, and 48.

I got 6, or 12%. What's really sad is that two of the 6 I got were songs I only knew from remixes here.

It would be neat if it was a dropdown box or something besides typing it in. Apparently I knew several of them, but missed them because I didn't use the right iteration of their names.

I went back and gave them a listen again. Got my score up to 38 (1,2,4,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 ,24,25,26,27,28,29,31,32,33,34,35,38,39,41,42,43,4 5,46, and 49). I'm almost certain I own a copy of 40, and 3, 5, 37, and 48 are really bugging me.

I was able to figure out 18 songs.
3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17, 18, 24, 30, 35, 37 (took me a while before I was able to mentally place it though), 39, 45, 48, and 49.
Edit: Oh, also, 22, but I didn't count it because my girlfriend knew it right away and I was able to figure it out from that, but I had never actually played the game before myself.

Up to 41 now. I figured out 3 and 5. I'm still almost sure I own the games that are 40 and 37, and now 30 and 44 are nagging at me. The rest are total blanks.

OMG I barely know ANY of those songs >_<. Makes me a bit sad inside, nah just kidding, definitely seems harder considering I only answered one with confidence so far and guessed on one out of about 20 songs so far. All the others I've encountered: no flippin' idea.

I got 13 (26%), but I feel that I should have known 6,32,43, and 49.

7-10 were ridiculously easy for me, but two of those I know like the back of my hand. 24 was a pleasant surprise though.
To Coop: I know what 47 is. I used to play it all the time as a kid. I can't believe you stalled on 3 though. At this point, you don't even have to have played the original game to know it (although I did).

Well, I didn't grow up with that system, so 3 was a tough one since I'd never played it until about a year ago.

12 songs for me! Although I recognized remixes of about 5 more of them, which I'm sure I could look up on OCR. Man, very nostalgia-tastic! And a third of them sounded like Castlevania songs so I kept typing in "Castlevania 2" *backspace* "3" *backspace* "4"... and Number 18 is really bugging me, I can't stop listening to it and not remembering what this funky goodness is!!!
And I can't believe 16 is on there...! It seems to be a different system than what I played it on too. That game is so bad it's good ;)
And song 36 - I didn't know that game existed! I couldn't stop grinning when I realized where that tune was from, five seconds after the song had finished :mrgreen:
Trouble with 3 and 48??! That's unpossible! 3 especially, as it's been remixed time and time again in newer installments...
But some REAL feedback: All the while I was thinking it'd be cool if games in the same row or column as each other all had something in common - it'd be fun to decipher what these commonalities are, and they'd serve as hints for those songs you just ALMOST know.

And 38 didn't give me any trouble. I got it less than a second after it started. It's 37 that's getting to me. I'll figure it out yet, along with 30, 40, and 44.

I have to admit that it's also fun to read your reactions, already knowing the answers. :mrgreen: When you recognize the song but can't remember the game it's really a pain... but I think this is what makes the game fun, increasing the addictiveness.

Yeah. Here in Brazil the Master System was a commercial success, with good distribution, games translated to portuguese and even some exclusive titles. I couldn't avoid paying homage. :smile:

Well, I tried it, but I downloaded five songs and recognised none of them...
Although, I'm kind of curious as to what #28672 is, because I downloaded it, but skipped it later and suddenly couldn't go back...

Not many people gave the game much of a chance. It's kind of an underrated jem (no folks, that's not a hint on any level :-P).

I got 38%overall i managed to get.
1,2,3,7,8,9,10,11,19,20,22,24,32,33,35,37,45,47,48 .
I know most of the Mega Drive ones. really rubbish with the 8 bit machines.
one complaint though.
number 23,41 what is the correct thing i should be typing?
I even went as far as to reference the songs on my computer just to be
certain and the game titles wont work.
Nice test though.
EDIT: i just realised number 33 came out on more than one console with a title resembling the platform in some way...sorry bud.

Wait, you mean you played #47 then? Wow, not too many people have played that one as far as I'm aware. While Disney, that game was actually pretty solid and I still enjoy it.
EDIT Apparently 31 is also the same game, just for a different system. Never played that one though.

Edit: Ok, did the second one too, and am ashamed to say I only got 10% (11,22,29,32,50)...but I know 39 and it won't take my answers, and I know the tunes to both 47 & 48 but can't place the games.

no. the applet seems to load, but it's just a white screen.. none of the buttons appear until you move your mouse over them, and typing in answers does absolutely nothing. and if you scroll up or down and back, the screen goes back to white again.

So...without hints I'm at 18 (36%). I was actually able to guess 22 based solely on the style of the first few seconds, and when the title didn't work by itself, I through a 2 in there for the win.
Edit: 27 with hints (54%). 36 annoys the crap out of me because I KNOW what it SOUNDS like, and the hint confirms it, but I got nothin'. :((
Also: Special thanks to starla for 48, and Garian for 42. COuldn't have done it without you guys!
Note: This is proof positive that I know more video game MUSIC than I do games themselves >_>

OK i managed to at least get it functional, though it's still horribly broken. on my first try without hints I got 36 (72% - Did you used to record game tunes...). There's a few that I know but I just can't recall the game.

I was unable to reproduce it, but using another browser solved the issue for him. You didn't tell your what your JRE is, but probably installing a newer one could solve it, if you really want to go into the hassle... I use version 1.6.0_04 from Sun. The bytecode was compiled with version 1.4.2 and afterwards compatibility, though :-?
I know that Java isn't the most popular platform to do things like this (probably Flash is), but while I was motivated to create the game, I can't say the the same about learning Flash. :roll:
Fortunately most people are able to play it without major problems.

This is pretty hard.. harder than VGMQ, I think, which is exactly this kind of thing. My initial score was 21 (42%)... you'd think it would be higher after being a judge for three years, but I guess not :P

#1 isn't too hard if you've ever really played Nintendo games. Give you a hint, one of the regular posters here features the character from this game taking a walk in his sig.

#43 is also one that I know very well, and you should too if you keep up with recently remixed music. Well, relatively recently remixed music...
And interestingly enough, #47 is a game that I know as well, and I feel like everyone should give a try once in their lives. A hint is that it was a popular cartoon back in the early 90's.

Oh sure, now I find hints after I've already bruised my brain getting those three :lol:
44 now, with 1, 43 and 47 added. #35 is driving me nuts, as I'm almost certain that I own the game (or at least played it more than a few times), and the music has a style and sound that I usually link to a given system and company. But so far, nothing's clicked. So it's pretty much that one, and #2 (namely because I was sure it was from a certain series, but I've typed in all the games from that series on that system, and none were right).
