Servers we like:

74.86.225.239:27015 (Dustbowl, Gravelpit, 2fort)

Edit (Bahamut): The new server is at 8.9.9.102:27015! The map rotation is on the top of the page. I still have some customization left to go, and verifying the slots/admin things, but I don't need to interrupt a game to tweak that stuff.

And please, I could use paypal donations for this (server costs $36 monthly, and ~$10 a month for HLstats)! Just $3 a month if you can, and if you feel like giving more, if there's extra left over, I will send them over to OCR. Click the following link or send the money to wesley.cho@gmail.com: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=wesley%2echo%40gmail%2ecom&item_name=OverClocked%20ReMix%20TF2%20Server&page_style=PayPal&no_shipping=1&cn=OCR%20Handle%20%26%20Steam%20ID&tax=0&currency_code=USD&lc=US&bn=PP%2dDonationsBF&charset=UTF%2d8

When you send a paypal payment, please list your OCR handle, SteamID, and Steam ID # in the comment field - in order to get your Steam ID #, first make sure the developer console is enabled in TF2 (go to Options -> Keyboard -> Advanced and enable it), and then enter a game. Then press ~ and enter status. Find your steam ID and the # is STEAM_x: x: xxxxx (sans spaces) - copy that whole expression into the comment field. Just in case, send me a PM on OCR to verify the payment & all requisite info is sent.

For admins - admin commands are here: http://wiki.alliedmods.net/Admin_Commands_(SourceMod) (http://wiki.alliedmods.net/Admin_Commands_%28SourceMod%29) (so entering sm_admin in the console or !admin or /admin in the chat brings up the admin menu)

I think it would be pretty nifty if we were in the clanOCR chat in steam, it would be easier to join each others games. I would be in #clanOCR, yet I can not connect to it. I think I'm being blocked. Any one know any good way of getting past this, such as a proxy?

This is hands down my favorite online multiplayer on the pc. I LOVE THIS GAME.

Anyway I'm already in the group. I don't like how steamID works though because for example you have a forum handle yet your steam id is different than that handle, and then there's the nickname you choose which shows up in game. Kind of like my case...

Forum Handle - anthonium
Steam ID - 1117chronicles
In game nickname - The Big Cheese

That's great, but not helpful for discussion or listing other information such as servers we like to play on... it would be nice to have a specific "Team Fortress 2" item as well. "Steam" is too vague considering all the games you can play on it.

I don't play too frequently because of my computer setup (non-intel mac), but I own a copy of the game and once a month I rock out LAN style with some friends and play the TF2 drinking game.
If you die; drink.

Anyways, i'll be playing more in a few months when I get my new Ubermac, so I can install an XP partition. I'd love to rock out with some OCR homies.

Y'all weren't interested when I spammed it, seems like brawl central right now. I also invited you guys to StarCraft.

Again I'm pretty glad we're all finally playing. I have a question about etiquette- If someone you know is playing, is it polite to just join the game? I'd assume so if a ton of people are playing, but if it's some sort of clan server i'd stay away. Does this sound about right?

Maybe in return you can build me a computer like this one:

i'll cut and paste teh infoz from the site.

# Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Harpertown” processors
# 8GB memory (800MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
# ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics with 256MB memory

The important thing is that it's an intel mac so I can run TF2. Which I will. Right after I see how many concurrent tracks I can run in Logic.

Nice, I'm in.

I got the Orange Box for Christmas, and have played TF2 some, but it seems the kind of game where playing with people you know would be much more enjoyable. If not people you know, at least the same people... the whole hopping on random servers is just to.... impersonal, or something.

Anyway, my Steam name is the same. I look forward to getting blown to bits by all of you!

That would work fine if he didn't want to play TF2. He could have bought a Intel Mac but the price would have skyrocketed compared to the components he got. Installing Linux wouldn't really work as your casual PC gamer probably wouldn't spend the time to get their games up and running at full speed (if they could be played at full speed).

by intel chipsets, i was referring specifically to chipsets designed by intel, not intel-based mobos. aka, 3.5gigs of ram with xp is better than 4 with vista, considering that vista takes up so much just by itself. or, x64 windows xp would allow 8 gigs of ram used.

Well, my view is that since XP isn't really supported anymore by Microsoft, I might as well future proof me for the next few years, and upgrade whenever it'll be necessary.

The problem with that is that Vista's a crippling POS...

XP is still supported for a couple of years. By the time it's actually cut off, Vista's issues ought to be fixed along with the OEM discs being cheaper...

That said, TF2 runs beautifully on my rig. :)!!

That's a good setup Bahamut. I have less than that actually on the new desktop I just build this past weekend and the game runs smooth as hell for me.

Intel Core Duo 2.40Ghz
4GB Ram
300GB Harddrive
Nvidia GeForce 7800GT
Windows Vista Home Premium

I too decided to get Vista because it was actually cheaper than getting XP Professional and because I wanted to get an OS that will be supported for a long time. After reading this is in an article I figured I should get Vista.

Microsoft has already made changes in its timetables. Last year, the company extended the sales life cycle -- the time during which PC manufacturers and system builders could sell computers with XP installed -- to June 30, 2008. It will stop selling XP altogether on Jan. 31, 2009. And it extended the mainstream support period for XP to April 14, 2009, in an effort to reassure customers made nervous by the long delays in shipping Vista.

In about two years supposedly M$ Corp's going to roll out with Windows 7 which from what I hear/read is that it's going to be the most "modular" windows OS ever...

4 gigs of ram in dual channel - however, windows only recognizes about 3.5 gigs of it, because of the limitations of the x32 chipsets (and video ram, which affects it too).

Yes, it does, and memory is cheap enough to warrant the 32 bit barrier loss.

There are two kinds of irony - literary irony, like in a book, and situational irony, which is very similar to coincidence.

It is ironic, in this case.

I'm really interested, honestly. The main reason I picked up TF2 was because OCR people were always playing it. I prefer to play with people I know; I don't like playing online games with 'unknowns.'

So, I did a little google search, and one of the first few results gave me this: http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/team_fortress_2.php

I got an excellent ping with their Atlanta location of 25, which strangely is better than what I got from Chicago, despite Chicago being a mere 2 1/2 hours away from me.

First question - do we want a public server or private? The max pricing for each (meaning max # of slots available) from this particular company is $39 per month for public with 26 players and $26 per month for 26 players for private.

I'm guessing other companies are fairly similar in pricing, although I'm sure not all are equal connection-wise. If anyone has a better suggestion, chime in, but with the number of people we have on OCR that plays tf2, the monthly fee should be nominal.

The thing about making it private is that while we have a fair amount of people on OCR that play TF2, the most I've ever seen in ONE GAME was only like 5 or 6. And TF2 isn't really that fun if you have small teams, in my opinion... I think ~12 players is a good number. So, if we were to do a private server, I would want to know that people from OCR would play on it regularly and not elsewhere. Otherwise, make it public with a bunch of admins so we can kick out pubs if we are trying to do an OCR game.

i could possibly be in support of this.

my two cents:

-public please...there isn't enough ocr interest to keep games going often enough or with enough people. you don't have to worry about it getting full either...we can have reserved slots for those of us who support (in payment or those of us just from ocr).

-22 or 24 man server only...probably save money and make games actually possible to win when on offense.

-STATS...i'll only play this if there are stats, this also makes it more interesting for everyone. to me playing gets boring after a while, i like working against myself/others to bring my ranking up. heck this also makes place for "awards" as well.

just a couple quick thoughts.

So, is this "team" just around for pubbing/pickup groups or are you guys seriously considering joining a ladder or league?

Cuz that'd be hilarious, if a bit of a pain to organize, as some of us are already in clans.

Finding me on Steam isn't that hard; AFAIK, I'm the only "Pyrion". But I rarely pub anymore, as my clan has a scrim or match every evening it seems.

I'd say just pubbing/pickup judging by everyone's response (probably is more fun that way anyway) - most of us aren't zomg hardcore about the game, but it'd be nice to play with other OCRers for the very reason DarkeSword mentioned.

So, are there any particular map settings that are favored for this? Server settings, etc.?

Pyrion recommended these guys for a server, sounds like it might be cheaper than the first option I posed: http://www.ghostsofdarkness.com/gdgaming/index.php

I keep people posted once I get the server chosen & ordered as to monthly fees.

Never mind the cheesy name, it's cheaper than gameservers (they want ~$1.48/slot every month), and the current rate isn't $1.50/slot (that's old), it's $1.25/slot every two months.

EDIT: Agreed on keeping it public.

I agree with this and the decision to make a server like that public, but think of this as well, if the server were private I think a few more OCR people, who don't have the patience to find a public game with the OCRgoers and get slammed down by people they don't know, would be more interested in playing. I still like the public server better (not that I really play with you guys much/at all) but food for thought.

Out of the OCR people that I recognize thus far, I've only seen one in my time playing TF2, which I've had since Christmas, and I don't remember who it was. I may have played with other OCR members, but unfortunately, I only recognize a handful of people here from the music I listen to. Of course, I'll get to know more people around... and hopefully more that play TF2. In the meantime, I'll just stick with TheVille servers, I and VII (moreso VII) and whatever else you guys play on. Username in TF2 is the exact same as my username here and I'm typically seen playing Scout (beware of my insanity) or Sniper (beware of me on Goldrush and Dustbowl). Occasionally, if no one is filling the spot, I'll be another class... except Spy, because I just can't play them well at all.

Here's a tip, although it may be hard to find a good server since you're in Australia - there's a map called achievement_box3 or something like that, a lot of people go there to do their achievements. It's optimal when it's organized well, and it may require a little patience, but it's by far the best way to get a lot of these achievements done.

OK, I looked into server hosts a little bit (nothing more than a quick google search), and I've found Gameservers (http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/team_fortress_2.php) and Darkstar (https://www.darkstarllc.com/services/game-servers/team-fortress-2/).

Gameservers would cost about $30 a month for a 20-slot server, or $300 for a year at a discount.

Darkstar would cost $23 a month, or $65 per three month for a server of the same size.

It looks like Darkstar would cost less, but I like the layout and design of Gameservers' webpage better.

As for performance, I was pinging relatively well on the Darkstar servers I could actually connect to, but more than half the servers they listed as demo servers weren't up, or they were taken down. The Gameservers servers I tested went fairly well. I tested a full server in Amsterdam, and was at 140ms. A full server in Chicago put me at 20ms.

Overall, I would vote in favor of Gameservers. Their support seems to be more coherent, and their features list is more fleshed out.

However, advertisements don't tell the whole story. I would much rather take the word of someone with experience with this stuff.

Bahamut
05-04-2008, 10:01 PM
Wtf, I got a ping of ~43 from Chicago for Gameservers, and it's quite closer to me.

Edit: Okay people, I bought the server - it's through Gameservers, since the ping seems to be the best on there, and price doesn't seem like it's terribly much of a concern. It's about $36 a month, although if I were to change the subscription plan to make larger payments over a longer period of time, it would be cheaper. For a reserved slot, judging from the interest, I think $3 a month sounds fair. If there's any extra money from many people doing it, I'll lower it for subsequent months, or just donate the rest to OCR. All depends on what you guys say about it.

Also, my paypal is wesley.cho@gmail.com, so send the monthly donations there and in the comment field put your OCR handle & SteamID, and send me a PM that you sent it just so I can keep track easier.

Edit #2: Also, what map settings and stuff should we have? The server address is 8.9.9.102:27015 btw.

Edit #3: Currently I'm putting a password as I figure out the server commands, but it'll be down once we're good to go.

I would recommend NOT 2Fort. I used to like it, but I played it so much in TFC that I'm totally sick of it. I think a lot of other players hate it too, while not many players hate Gravel Pit or Dustbowl, which are solid map choices for a server.

My favorite map is actually Warpath, but that's a pretty wild request for a new server. Instead, I would recommend Gold Rush as a newer map to use.

If there's no other real complaints/comments, I'll turn the server into a public one sometime in the early afternoon. For those who were wondering, it's already up, and I posted the pw a little earlier, although soon enough you won't need a pw.

Yeah, I'm going to chime in and say no custom maps as well. There is the additional fact that Valve has separated the custom settings servers, so that it would be harder to attract people if we ran custom maps - which reminds me, we need to get a whole group of us on at once to play fairly frequently so that we can build the server into a place people will visit often.

Alright so I figured out almost everything about the admin (I think I'm one step away from getting it to work), and I'm pretty sure that I have reserved slots set up correctly now (it shouldn't kick anyone out of the game now unless an admin gets in), so now I just need to set people up for the reserved slot list when I get donations. I will update details in the first post about it so that you know exactly what to put in the comment field if you donate.

VTF is a picture file format (often used for skins and sprays) There's a photoshop plugin for it, as its used fairly extensively. If you want a link, I could find it for you.

VMX would probably be a config type file (possibly related to advertising or something I'd guess...never heard of it, but if its what I think it it, it'll be linked to the VTF file).

Blame the predominantly east coast userbase of OCR  . Personally, I'm up for whatever time, so if people want a time a little later, that works for me as well.

Edit: Ok, finally got the admin stuff working! So far I put zircon, DarkeSword, and Pyrion as admins, with PosiBolt to be added whenever he gets on tf2 and I can grab his SteamID # in a game. The page with command lists is linked to on the first page for admins, so check out there when you get a chance. The reserved slot thing should be fixed so that it shouldn't kick if it's at 23/24 upon joining, and the team unbalanced thing has been fixed so that it will rebalance if there's a +2 advantage on one side.

In addition, I would like some crafty photoshopper who plays tf2 to create OCR related decals for the game, at least for the maps we use. I can send the decals that came with the mod I'm using so that whoever volunteers can see what they are and where they're used in the maps.

Yeah, easiest way to go about this is to get VTFEdit (I'll take "How to use Google" for $200, Alex) and import the images in that way. The importation method in TF2 itself has never worked for anything but VTF's.

edit - how does steam deal with no-disc cracks for games? i generally download the nodisc as soon as i get a game, because i hate having to deal with swapping discs constantly. i know steam can 'import' non-steam games, but will it just break the crack? or will it continue to allow me to use said games? note that i own all of these games.

Check out the support page here:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601
and be sure to check the link at the bottom of that article too. THat should be what you're looking for.
(where'd the toolbar go for the code you can use to make words a link? Edit: oh, it shortens it anyway. nice.)

Basically, if you can activate your retail game in steam, I don't think you need the CD, but not a lot of games are supported this way. If you're importing a non-Steam game, I think it only acts like a shortcut within the Steam client. I wouldn't think that would affect any cracks you have.

I was kind of disappointed that that's how it worked out... I have quite a few retail games that Steam sells (WH4k), but I can't actually activate them through my steam account... it would be nice to not have to worry about the physical discs, keep it automatically updated, etc....

Good question. Last night's emptiness was kind of expected, because a lot of people expressed on the forums that Sunday nights were bad for them. Also, a lot of people are in the middle of finals weeks, etc., so I'd assume that the server will get more exposure throughout the next month.

Today was a nice day of gaming guys - we had 18 people at once at one point, which is the third highest we've had (the highest two were the first two days of playing, full server both days). Those NeoGAF guys following JoeFu added some extra fun to the playing, thanks to them for coming!

I wish I could have popped in for longer; I don't get enough chance to sit down for extended sessions anymore. I got some good stuff in though, I'll be around when I can!

Yeah, fun stuff. Too bad they left to go play on their server. Might start playing on the OCR one more, also played 2fort for the first time in a few months, kinda refreshing, but I see why I hated it.

Yeah, my roommate and I aren't huge fans, either. It's nice to play once in awhile, but it really stagnates far too easily.

Thanks for the nice night of playing everyone. With school over I should probably be able to participate quite often.

Wes, I'll pitch in money in a couple of weeks when a more steady cash flow permits extra spending.

Sniping is definitely fun, but I don't do it that often. I did the math, and I only play as sniper 8% of the time I'm playing TF2. I feel that sniper is a pretty useless class compared to demos, engies, medics, and heavies, but that's just my opinion. Usually, I try to pick my class based on whatever is most needed by my team.

The other day, however, I felt like playing a class simply for fun, and I guess I went off a little. sorry.

Snipers are pretty important. If you can pick off the medic when they attack, it usually pisses them off like crazy. Also taking down a heavy with one shot helps a lot too.

Snipers are only really horrible when they can't hit anything, or they get into contests with other snipers.

Oh yeah, I agree wholeheartedly with Joe. Nothing blunts an enemy offensive quite as effectively as a sniper's bullet. You don't want many snipers, but having a couple is vital to an effective defense strategy. Though they are less useful on the offensive, having a sniper back up the forward push can sometimes push the tide of victory in favor of the aggressor.

Another use is to use the Sniper to pick off the Engineer fixing the sentry guns so that the soldiers or demomen can properly dispose of them.

There's lots of effective uses for a good Sniper, it's just that it requires some foresight and sometimes it's highly situational. As Effef said, the only time you really run into a problem is if you get a sniper who can't hit anything. By all means, if you have fun with the class and you're contributing to the team effort, play it!
