*UPDATE*

LAST DAY OF THE MONTH
If you have not yet dontated, please consider sending a mere $1 or $2 via paypal to the site!

So, Dave has been working his rear end off on site development and doing a lot of nitty-gritty work that most of us won't even see the benefit of for a while. In addition to whatever stress comes with his obligation and personal dedication to constantly do this work to improve the site (as well as juggling his job and personal life in the *real* world), he has to worry about whether or not the site has the funding it needs to stay afloat. I asked him last night how much it cost to keep the server above even, and it's quite a bit more than I thought. And I'm sure there are PLENTY of people on here who are just as ignorant to the fact that this website which provides awesome forums and tons of awesome music all for FREE is actually rather expensive.

So here's the deal. As I type this, there are 840 registered users (*EDIT* Now, it's around 1000) who have visited the forums this month. If I need to, I'll be happy to take the time to list every single one of us individually. And that's just since April 1st. And that's not counting the hundreds of unregistered guests on the forums at any given moment.

I am asking every individual person who reads this to donate anywhere from $5 - $10 (USD - or whatever your currency's equivalent) to the site this month. Here's the breakdown. If even HALF of those of us who have been here this month contribute a meager $5, that's well over $2000 for the site. I'm pretty sure that would 1) relieve a lot of stress off djpretzel's plate, and 2) help ensure worry-free continuation of this site for a long time 3) assure those of us who contribute that we're helping a great cause stay on its feet and move forward at the same time. So everybody who contributes wins.

NOW THEN

Here's what I do NOT want to see in this thread. If you're absolutely under no circumstances willing to contribute, then DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD.

And by the way: "I would, but I can't afford to part with $5 this month. Sorry..." is NOT, I repeat NOT a valid excuse. If you're not going to contribute, simply do not post, because I do not want to hear why. I'm asking moderators to remove any such posts if they appear. I'm just as poor as the rest of you, and I know every single excuse there is, and believe me, NONE of them are valid. We all have expenses and bills to pay, and we all need to eat make rent and pay for gas and blah blah blah. If you have the means to get on this website and download the free music and enjoy all the free content that's on here, then you can afford to part with $5. Period. Me, I'm going to lead by example. In addition to purchasing a pair of OCR stickers (which I did) I'm donating $10.

Anyone who does contribute, please post here, because I really would like to keep tabs on how many people are willing to do this, plus, I (and the rest of the community I hope) would be happy to see who you are so I can express my personal appreciaton.

DJPreztel sums up a concern in his most recent remix writeup (http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01699/) quite well:

Sometimes, because of our content policy, our LLC status, the amount of content on the site, or any number of things, people mistakenly think that we're an actual business that has ample resources and makes money, etc. This is not the case - money from all our ads, shirt sales, and donations combined only barely breaks even these days due to the operational cost of hosting the site. In other words, we always need whatever help you can provide.

Alright then, so that's the deal. Remember, I'm not asking for a monthly subscription or anything. I'm only asking that this month, some of us show a small amount of financial support for the site. I love this place--I stop by several times a day. I'm willing to forfeit McDonald's Value meal or two to help keep it in the green.

Couple of FAQs:
Q: How do I donate?
A: Paypal button on left BELOW SIDEBAR. (looks like this -> http://www.ocremix.org/images/template/x-click-but04.gif)

Q: But I don't have a paypal account...
A: You do not need one. You can make a regular credit/debit card payment without signing up for one.

Q: I don't have the money right this minute--can I contribute later?
A: Absolutely. If you post in this thread, I'll consider that a commitment. It's on your honor to actually pay if you say you will.

Q: Can I just buy an OCR shirt/hoodie/stickers instead of donating?
A: Yes--every little bit helps. Donating, however, is the most direct way to help, since we only get a percentage of merchandise sales, but any support we can get is still very much appreciated.

zircon has offered another way of getting money into the site's reserves. Pick up any of his albums through his website (http://www.zirconstudios.com/store.html) or CD Baby (http://cdbaby.com/all/zircon), and he will donate $2 from each sale to OCR (this won't apply if you buy at a discount at CD Baby). You can show you're buying the CD via OCR by emailing him a note (aaversa@gmail.com) after making the purchase through Paypal, or simply writing "OCR" when CD Baby asks you where you heard about the artist. This 'promo' will be running through the end of April.

Q: How much money have we raised so far?
A: Not enough to suit long-term needs. Keep sending! :)

I swear I didn't prompt Jimmy to do this, but his timing couldn't have been better.

Hopefully you noticed the bumper sticker announcement, which is another way you can help us out.

I've gotten some questions lately about hosting costs vs. ads, etc., and it breaks down something like this:

Costs:

dedicated server: $274 a month
two additional mirrors: $25 a month
misc. additional costs: $0-15 a monthTotal: About $300 a month.

What that doesn't convey is that if we only break even, we can never do things like shirts, stickers, promotional copies of VotL, etc.

Also, lately, Google ads have taken a huge hit, and we're actually not even breaking even with them.

When you add in Zzounds and Amazon, both excellent retailers we affiliate with through our store (http://www.ocremix.org/store/), we end up breaking even, but those fluctuate a lot, and Google ads continue to decline.

Bottom line is that, at the worst time possible - when I'm trying to do tons of development to improve the site - I'm having to worry about supporting it as well. Frustrating combination, because I'd much rather be adding features and content than more ads.

In addition to anything else you can do for OCR, please consider shopping through our Amazon store for games, systems, books, music, etc., or through Zzounds when buying music software and instruments.

Every little bit helps!

Thanks,

- djp

We'll probably be bringing on a new judge or two based on current panelist availability. This may help. Also, we'll pick back up with posting once we get past 1700, since we need to coordinate a torrent update with aubrey.

on a more serious note, I kinda have a bone to pick with the new bumper stickers. They're just... dear me, how to put this delicately, so very *plain*. Which is curious, considering you know of at least one halfway decent graphic designer who frequents the boards.

So I suppose what I'm trying to say is, why are the bumper stickers so... unassuming?

So I suppose what I'm trying to say is, why are the bumper stickers so... unassuming?

I like simplicity when it comes to logos, and these bumper stickers are of our logo, basically. Save the OBX-style oval, which is plain because it's emulating that specific look.

Shoot me some ideas sometime if you're interested - I like having straightforward, official stickers like these, but a couple variants might be welcome, since the sunk cost is less risky than with shirts. Also, however: color = more expensive.

Thanks for the support, everybody!

yes, i'll mention anyone who contributes in any form. although, the public recognition should really not be the primary motivation for your donation, but rather, quite simply a mere thanks from myself and anyone else who echoes my feelings.

Is there an alternate way to donate for those of us lacking the "plastic" that is needed to donate normally?

Public recognition for donating to a cause is humorous and kinda mezzed up. I said that for the "lulz". I honestly couldn't care less if I get my name up there. For me, it is about contributing to a site that helped me meet possibly the best friends I have ever had. Yes, they may be "e-friends", but after becoming really close to them, they are more than that. The members of the site that were supportive during the 'darker' times of my life really have such a warm spot in my heart. I am more than happy to help the website that made me feel as though I was truly worth something when I lost all hope. It was definitely a strength boost.

Dramatic sounding, yes, but I speak from my heart. Each and every member of this site, lurker or poster, all have such a warm spot in my heart. There have been many times that I have not exactly been on the "happy side" with some members here, but that is because really, I just do it for fun :p. There will never really be a time where I honestly never liked any of you *including bluefox :o*.

I will be happy to donate to this site if it is to help it's survival and make it prosper for years to come. There is a reason I have this as my home page. I love it and everyone involved, past present and future.

I've got some money coming in for my college expenses pretty soon (such as food and such). I can part with a meal to support this place. After all, listening to the music from here has kept me going when I had no motivation, it was Mahaboo's LRS&S thread in Offtop that helped me through some of my rougher times (a thread that would not exist without OCR in the first place), and I met one of my closer friends here at VT through this place. I'm in a much more favorable situation largely due to this site, directly and indirectly. So as soon as I get that money, I'll contribute what I can. This place deserves it.

I'll let you know when I make the donation.

I hadn't read through the whole post when I first posted, but after looking over, what Arek said has struck a large chord with me as well. I spent a good amount of time lurking here before joining, and even reading everyone's interaction style was kind of, warming, shall we say. Now even more so that I've started frequenting #clanOCR, even though I haven't been around particularly long its a good place to be; in general everyone there is more mature than the people around me, so it helps take the edge off of a day.

In closing, everyone has at least one definitive "thank you OCR" post, and think of this as mine. I have a very soft spot for this site, and the people in it, and I hope to be a part of it for a long long time. And I'm sure as I get to know more of you I'll get to enjoy it, and you all, even more.

just to clarify, there's nothing wrong with public recognition to those who donate. what would be messed up is if someone were donating SPECIFICALLY and SOLELY to receive recognition.

You're right, the main motivating factor should be that if you are here, you appreciate this site and have probably profited in some way from it--not monetarily, but either in new music, friendships, advice, etc.

WE'RE DOING WELL, PEOPLE. BUT 22/840 IS STILL A REALLY WEAK RATIO. (~2.5%). Help in a decent cause, folks.

Now you can show your support by getting the word out that OCR can always use a donation no matter what the month by either inspiring others with your donations, or guilting them beyond all redemption that they are tacitly ruining the site! (Also secretly, so secretly, you can increase your e*peen to incredible lengths)

$10 is a small donation to make to keep such an awesome site going. I may be buying an item or two from Amazon soon as well, so if I do I'll go through your store as well. I think I'll even get off my ass and purchase a shirt too.

Quick question for djp (if you don't mind and it okay to ask that is): How much do you get on sales in the astore? Is it a percentage thing or just a like a set amount? I just wanted to know if donated enough.

Edit: I pretty much feel the same way arek does except for the friends part because well, I haven't been here long enough for that. I do respect everyone on this site like if they were a buddy because through my many years of lurking I have gained many lol's in my time of extreme bordom (school) and for the awesome music, So thanks everybody.

I think we've generated a nice spiff, but I'd really like everyone to get in a long-term perspective. We're still far short of that goal. The idea here (for me anyway) is to have the kind of rally that will not simply serve as a catch-net when OCR is falling short for a month or two, but to instead build the kind of fund that will help Dave be able to do stuff like make more free copies of albums and make more cool OCR stuff (thongs, mugs, and wristwatches! ...maybe ) and add new features, and so on and so on.

A small head's-up--of the nearly 1000 that have been on the site since April 1, only ~5% have contributed. Many people who have viewed this thread have not (I seeeee you...). And while I think we're off to a great start, I still know we can do better.

In short, the direct answer is, "Not enough. Keep donating!"

$300 for a month to run the site? I thought it would be much higher. Not bad at all. Will be donating $10 (let me see if I can do more *fumbles through checkbook*). Long-time lurker/downloader, first time forum user. Lest I blabber on and seek glory, I'll just say that a donation will be done. Thanks for everything, djp. May there many more years to come.

$300 a month is strictly for bandwidth. There's also...

Manufacturing fees for promotional items like Voices of the Lifestream.
Printing fees for shirts, hoodies, and any other OCR merchandise. To my knowledge, we haven't broken even on the latest run of shirts, or if we have we certainly haven't made much of a profit.
Stamps and all other costs associated with a trip to the post office or FedEx, which comes up regularly as a result of promotional mailings

There are certainly more items on the list, but you get the idea. The more money the site has above the cost of bandwidth, the more flexibility we have to expand and do all sorts of cool stuff.

I don't like the idea of donating money to a website for simply being there (even one as awesome as this)... or of where this could be going, if DJP was a corrupted person (pay to have your remix bypass the judging queue, pay more to have your shitty remix bypass the judging process entirely, pay lots to be on the judges panel). However, the situation is apparently serious, and to help prevent the above described nightmare, or one where DJP has to pay for running the site out of his own pocket, I will buy something from you.

Could I get the exact measurements of the medium sized t-shirt from someone who has one? Width + height? First wash shrink ratio?

Heh bumperstickers. I suppose I could put them on my bicycle.

If only international shipping was cheaper... but with the dollar being what it is, it's not really a problem.

noted. that being said, the website is not "simply here". you've spent lots of time on it, and downloaded the content from it. if you really have that much of a problem with donating, please default back to my original post where i said

I take great offense at the insinuation that anyone on the site would ever allow something like you described to happen. I'm sorry it didn't come out as the obvious joke it was meant to be. I should probably keep my sense of humor to myself... or slap smileys around every joke I make in case someone doesn't get it.

Really, guys, you do a great job, all of you. I'm sorry if I made anyone upset, it's not what I wanted. I was about as serious about a corrupted OCR as I am about that story for an OCR-tan game to actually happen. It's just... if I donate (which feels sort of wrong to begin with), I think the site and all the hard work put into it deserves a lot more than $5-$10. But if I pay more, i'll look like a suck-up. Again, to clarify, I will help out... somehow.

Man, I donated, but you're almost coming off as pretty militant here.

fair enough, but it's like this. if you're going to give money to a charity, you don't hand them the check and say "you know, i don't have to give this to you. how do i know you're not going to do something shady with it? oh well, i guess i'll just use it for a tax write-off".

just saying that's the wrong reason to donate to a cause. like larry said, if you don't want to, then dont. i'm just asking that if you have any qualms, i'd rather not hear them. i'm not going to harsh on the people who choose not to donate, but i do ask that they show respect for the rest of the folks who ARE.

*EDIT*

also, i'm not implying that dafydd meant to be disrespectful. i was just explaining my viewpoint. the important thing is that he did contribute, and once again, i am in fact thankful for his contribution.

Anyway, I have to support OCR because of the contributions that this site has provided me, aside from the great music and forums. It has introduced me to my best friend and to a community of people who have been nothing less than supportive over the years. Plus, the Silent Hill discussion thread would never be where it is without the support of OCR and it's visitors.

After considering these contributions, I still feel like I owe more to the site and its community. Expect to see another contribution later this month!

The going rate of exchange for a koala is $10 US, and the exchange for a dingo is $5 US. Therefore I will donate $25 US to the site.

May the $5 feed on your baby.

I like to think of it this way:

Think of how much a lot of people spend on their music.

Think how many songs there are on OCR.

Think how much money you are saving.

*WINNAHS*

I think the odd few $ is a pittance compared to the amount of money saved. Especially when you think about the quality. :)

My donation will come once I get some money in my bank account. I've kinda been hit with a few bills etc of late, otherwise I'd have already donated :)

It IS coming tho :<

I bought a shirt for the first time. Been coming here since, what, '01 or '02. Either way, it's been a while, and sadly this is my first contribution to the site. The idea to make a month to support OCR to get people's asses into gear is genius. Some of us need that push sometimes.

And, if the shirt is as awesome as I'm hoping it'll be, I'll buy a white one too soon after, just because I love this place that much.

LONG LIVE OCR!!!

EDIT: After reading the whole thread, start to finish, I've understood the gravity of the situation on a long term scale. My first reaction was to donate $1,000,000,000 immediately. But since this is more of a LONG TERM issue, I think I'll just have to donate in tiny increments every month until the end of time.

...but I'll still order another T-shirt before the month is over, just in spirit of the occasion. =)

It's cheap for pretty much anyone who isn't from the US to donate. The Canadian/Aussie dollar is at it's highest for a long time. The GBP and Euro are also doing strongly against the USD.

Putting it literally, OCR will get almost double the income from currency conversion now than it would have 5 years ago.

If you buy any of my CDs through my website (http://www.zirconstudios.com/store.html) or CD Baby (http://cdbaby.com/all/zircon), I will donate $2 from each sale to OCR**. You can show you're buying the CD via OCR by emailing me a note (aaversa@gmail.com) after making the purchase through Paypal, or simply writing "OCR" when CD Baby asks you where you heard about me. I'll be doing this through the end of April.

You see, I wanted to donate, but that meant I had to register too since Jimmy wanted to "keep tabs". I hope there's a "soft warm fuzzy spot" in your hearts for me too.

So I got my bumper stickers today and in support of OCR I put one of them on my car.. I went over to a buddies house later and he asked "Overlocked remix?". Why can't anyone ever read the logo right? I've had so many people read my hoodie and ask the same thing.

don't tell me we've run out of donors... :(

18,000 registered members, and we're trickling to a halt. who's gonna step it up? the list of contributers is nothing to sneer at, but this site still needs all the financial support it can get.

order shirts, bumper stickers! throw a few bills in this direction. the person who benefits the most from your donation is YOU :) $10, $5, heck, $3 if that's all you got.

The month ain't even half over, so keep the support coming, folks - remember, the less we have to worry about keeping the site afloat, the more time we have to focus on improving OCR! EVERY dollar you donate makes a difference; no amount is too small, and no purchase through the AStore goes unappreciated.

Thanks to everyone who's chipped in so far, too! I myself am donating $50 and picking up some stuff through the AStore.

How much does clicking the google ads actually help the site? Does Google know how often the links are clicked and pay OCR accordingly, or how does all that work?

In other words, would I help the site by regularily clicking on google ads, even those I'm not actually interested in? And if everyone did that, would it make a huge difference for the site's economic situation or not?

I'm an OCR fanboy.

I've been away and very busy for the last 3 months and just recently with in the last 2 weeks was able to come back to OCR and see what was/is going on. I was very surprised to find this thread and I think it's a great idea. It's great to see people helping out. I download all of the music from this site and I'm a forum regular(when I can be).

This place kicks ass.

DJ Pretzel not only organizes all the coolness of this website, but finds the time to make FF remixes like 'The Sveldt' (5 stars out of 5 on that one). Big Giant Circles not only makes insanely cool music (absolutely can not get enough of 'Eastern Ice Fields') he does stuff like this thread as well. Don't even get me started on how many hit arrangements DarkeSword has produced. zircon, you are a fucking remixing legend. The list goes on and on. My list of favorites is overwhelming. The music you people provide is awesome, and the discussion(s) in off-topic is believe it or not some of the best the internet has to offer.

$20 sent via PayPal.

Thanks for everything. Keep up the good work guys.

$10 was literally all that was left in my PayPal account so there you go for now; moving (back to my old, now fixed apartment) this weekend and have lots to do in general but at the end of the month my birthday happens to be payday in which I'll also receive a years' worth of retroactive salary raise that they forgot to give me (haha) so, I'll send more for sure around then. I don't really remember what the circumstances were when I found OCR back in 2004, but I'm pretty sure it might have had something to do with Donkey Kong. I was really into DK at that point... I think the first ReMix I ever heard was probably either Blue Vision or Phear the Monkey.

Since 2004 I've lurked here and posted there. I had a stint in UnMod and fell in love with that for a time. Although I probably haven't been posting regularly until 2008, I've always been back here to catch up on the music and the goings-on. Always something going on, you know?

Well, having learned all your names over the years while NOT getting to know anyone here particularly well certainly has it's mixed feelings, but I love this site and what it stands for far too much to pass up the opportunity to help out as I can. That twenty bucks of mine... honestly, I work the family business, and some months I sit and stare at the floor and think, "will this be the last month I can afford to pay my bills?" Times are grave around here, but after paying down a large investment I've recently had enough money to buy a thing or two for the first time in 4 months or so. So... I know a lot of you are able to give more, but don't. And I know some of you are able to give a lot, and you do. Well, by all rights I shouldn't be able to give anything... every dollar I have keeps my family crankin' for another month.

So, from this hard workin' fan, here's my 4-year "Thank You!" and a promise to always do what I can. Because while I'd love to get to know you all better as time goes on, I do work 6 days a week, so if nothing else I'd like to say I helped keep the music flowin'.

Cheers!

As promised, I've donated an extra $20 to OCR. It's a last minute push, but I think we should still let people know that it is Support OCR Month for these last few days.

Isn't it StarZander?

Sorry, but I'm (once again) unemployed, and I've broken my wrist, so I'm on a limited budget. Otherwise I would donate without hesitation. :(

Awesome work, guys and gals.

This is the last day of the month, which means if you have not yet donated, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE.

If you have a spare dollar, donate it to OCR! Support the cause! We're all here because we love this place!

(and if you don't love this place, why are you here?)

Way too few people have donated, if you look at the list in the first post. Maybe there are more than the ones listed there though.

Also, my name is spelled wrong, the first letter is supposed to be capitalized...

Alright, my poor ass just donated one dollar to the site. I know it's not much, but if I could afford more on my nearly-maxed out credit card, I would.

Good luck, OCR! Here's hoping that my favorite website gets the funds they desperately need!

Nearly forgot about this one!

Ok, I went ahead and donated.

Also, I been meaning to get zircon's last album anyway.
May as well do it now instead of this weekend. KF

I just donated by buying a shirt. That counts, right? I meant to do it earlier, but I was kinda hung up on whether to get a Medium or Large... I've had issues in the past where Mediums from some brands are too small so I have to get Large, but then other brands have Mediums that actually fit and Larges that are too large for me. So I'm hoping that the Medium I just ordered falls under the second category. Otherwise I'll be kicking myself for not just donating directly to the site.

So yeah, donation made.

Haha. Actually, it's because I'm only 5'3''. That's right around the height where clothes manufacturers transition from Medium to Large shirt sizes, so depending on the company and how long they make each size (which is my issue with them), I could go either way. But hopefully, if I purchased the wrong size, I can tell without opening the packaging and just exchange it for the other size. Not likely, though. Oh well.

When I get some money from my summer job, I'll donate more directly to OCR. Count on it.

Forgot to make a post in this thread about it, but I purchased an OCR shirt. It can go right next to the OCR-tan shirt that I made last year. I've been lurking OCR's forums for years (two years before I even signed up to say anything), so thanks everybody associated with OCR for a good chunk of my life spent listening to ReMixes, lurking the boards, etc.

Just donated another $10. I'll probably buy another shirt in a month or so, and a new hoodie closer to Fall/Winter.
