View Full Version : PRC118: Pop Star's Most Brutal Shortcake! (Kirby 64)
The People's Remix Competition 118
PRCv5-14
Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! (www.doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/PRCcommercial.wmv) Last fortnight, we saw the development of a Robowarrior related contest and the calling for a multitude of accordions. While the latter didn't quite suffice, there was still a healthy batch of contributions for the compo, and once again Sir Nuts took the prize with his own electronica take on the source tune.
Your challenge this week still has its origins on a Nintendo home console cartridge, albeit this time we're moving to the Nintendo 64 and its enhanced 3D graphics of the day. We're also returning to first party franchises too, and this time we're looking at something pink, round, cute and can turn itself into an exploding snowman if it wants to.

I chose this as a source tune for this PRC because Kirby 64 rocks, and the OST too. It's probably one of the most overlooked games for the Nintendo 64, and for the whole kirby franchise as well, and I think it deserves more attention. This song has that classic catchiness found in most kirby songs and I bet a lot of people like that. Good luck everyone, and thanks Rexy for the help, as always ;)

Who can't resist the might of one of the sweetest additions to Nintendo's library? I hope this'll be worth a lot of attention, otherwise I'll turn into a curling stone and knock you all over.
GOOD LUCK!

Failing to enter Starla's OHC & 90m compo recently has gotten me strumming strings again.
Are you guys scared?
You should be.

Bump for great justice!
I might squeeze a bonus mix if I have time.

There's less than 19 hours left, but no entries yet. It looks like Sir Nuts' bonus mix may be the only mix.

Fear not, I'm rendering right now!
EDIT: OK, it's uploaded for your listening pleasure :<
Kyle said it right, there's 12 hours left. But you know the drill; if we don't get to at least 3 by the time the deadline comes around, we're going to have to do a little time extension.

Another Sir_NutS' sponsored PRC Bites the dust. I think I have the record now uh?
I think next time I'll let someone else pick my songs.

Erm, your last one was pretty successful. I'll try and make time for a mix. No promise though.
Don't say it like that, Nuts. Cloud Man remains one of the hugest successes of the current PRC season so far, so I am really sure this could just be one of those "quiet weeks" again. It's only going to really bite the dust if we get repeats of earlier this season when it was namely a case of "Chickenwarlord vs the world".

Hey, there have been rounds with only one entry.

I think only the Eek The Cat week had only a single entry after extension.
It was the wrong song on the SPC too :(.

Round 5: Pokemon-Diablo combo. (http://www.doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/prc.php?prcid=5)
The banner makes me laugh.
Talking of banners, I need to get cracking on Douli's archive piccies and stuff. It's not as if I'm doing much else this weekend, so I'll actually make a start on it, starting with PRC88 O_o

Oh, pardon my ignorance I've been away from PRC for a good while and I thought the contestants flow was good for most of them XD.
Sadly I didn't get time to make a mix this time (working overtime all week), but I really wanted to.
The mixing stage is over. Now it's time to get down with the voting!
Here's the deal. You're going to click on the ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC118) and cast your vote at the bottom of the page. Arrange all three mixes from first to third and state a reasoning with them. Contestants are encouraged to vote as they automatically get 3 points added to their ballot if they do so. The winner of PRC117 (Sir Nuts) has a vote that counts twice, so make sure you impress him just as much as everyone else. You have until Tuesday, April 22nd at 4:59AM EST to cast your vote. The winner will get to choose the source tune for PRC119!

There goes my streak :(. Sorry Mr. Nuts.
Anyways, voterated.

Sorry I forgot all about this, but at least I voted.
Let me quickly remind you that you have 8 hours left to make your voting decisions. I'm currently surprised by the voter turnout as we got more than the usual season 5 PRC contest so far; let's see how many we can get before time's up :D
No new votes, eh? I suppose we shall move on to the dire conclusion. Who found their way to Rock Star? Who is slowly trailing through Dedede's castle? And who's stuck just fighting a lame Waddle Dee with the useless Fire+Ice combo?
Total number of voters - 8
Total number of mixes - 3
Highest possible score - 24
Flexstyle happy danced his way to third place with 12 points.
Binweasel got caught for drink-driving and settled for second place with 17 points.
And the winner of PRC118 is Rexy with 21 points!
Great. Just great. I now have to sit in a dark corner and think up something for this Friday. And to think, I wanted to take some time off with some Mario Kart Wii action... bah. (yay sarcasm)
Whichever, I assure you that PRC119 is in safe hands. Even if I wasn't picking the source tune, I echo Sir Nuts's statement in that there were a bunch of awesome works this round. You guys contributed well, and I hope to see you contribute to future contests with your growing work.
That said, I'll meet you on Friday for PRC119. Be there!

Bud ofsisser, Oi whuzn't drivvingk der carrrr... wiv my hands!
Shucks, thought I had an extra day to vote. Not that I had much to say except Flexy's rocked and Rexy's was adorable. Adorable.
As people were inquiring about the drumming noise: just a little random something thrown on last minute to amuse (mostly myself). Wanted something live, all I had was an acoustic guitar that I couldn't learn the chords to the song on fast enough. Sounded nice to tap on. First take, thought: Bah, everyone's s'posed to be drunk in the tavern anyways, no worries! Slap it on, wot! Still, no excuses (apart from that).
Come Friday, come excitement!
Hah, I knew it was some kind of "hand drum"; never thought it would be an acoustic guitar rim :D
Still, don't worry about there being sloppy takes or whatever. Like I said, if you have an intended rhythm, this is where editing of the wave file would end up coming in so that the resulting recording would sound more quantised and stuff (even though it's impossible to quantise audio recordings). I've had experience before live-recording a whole bunch of hand percussion in one single music technology assignment last year, so I just thought I'd share my post-recording experiences for anyone that would need it.

Congrats Rexy! Production values always win, it seems :nicework: well plus having a well-arranged song doesn't hurt at all lol.
Honestly I usually pay a LOT more attention to both my arrangement and my production, but what can you do in six hours? At least when you're used to spending more like a couple weeks on a mix, lol.
This was a really fun PRC (only my second one but hey it's all cool), I'm looking forward to participating in more!

I actually catched up on the idea of the hand drumming :D. At first I checked my headphones (what the hell is this noise?) but then I figured it was part of the mix to make things feel more random and live. Although it was a little too random for my taste, I don't think it takes away too much from the song.
Anyways hope to see you all next time, although I'm not sure I'll be able to participate in the next round.

Hmm, y'know what's odd...each time I've participated in a PRC, Rexy wins it! Strange.
I never realised that before O.o I think it all comes down to luck of the appeal of the source tune, interestingly enough.
You'll get there, I'm sure of it. Keep at it and your time to pick a source tune will be nigh.

It'd help if I spent more than four hours on making the track, y'think? Looking forward to the next time I can destroy - erm - compete against you all!

A shame i missed this :( But i will be looking out for the next one. Grats to Rexy a rather nicely done chilled out version of the song but way too mellow for my tastes, personally I really liked flexstyle's happyhardcore mix haha :P
