Urgh, how do I use the GS VST?!

I downloaded Guitar Suite, looking for a nice guitar vst. However, after moving the plug-ins to the appropriate folder, Cubase did not pick up an instrument. Are these just effects and if so where do I get a friggin' guitar VST?!

The quick look I had at the Guitar Suite webpage indicates that these are just effects to be applied to audio (and are probably accessible in the effects section of the mixer view's channel strips), but they're not actual instruments. Have you looked for guitar SoundFonts?

These are effects, they don't generate sound. You need to run sound through them (eg. a guitar sound) since that is what they are made to do... act like amps and pedals.

Another note with Cubase: sometimes you'll have to tell it to rescan your plugin folder. I haven't had a 100% success rate with it auto-detecting new plugins (although that might have to do with the installation procedures for the plugins themselves).

Also, it *is* a VST. It isn't a VSTi (the i being instrument). Most types of plugins (RTAS, AU, VST, etc.) can be instruments or effects, and most people call them the same thing to keep it simple.

Do a search for the Ultimate Guitar Kit soundfont. It's pretty old now, but it's really quite good.
