I think it's swell. Excellent variation with the piano solo. Would have enjoyed some ambient features like choir vocals or a string ensemble but as a stand-alone piano remix , it works very well. It almost made me cry  Klutz now has some competition..

Klutz now has some competition..
Hehe... :D

Anyway, just a quick note...for anyone who thinks this render was too soft, check out the release at VGMix.com. It's a little louder and clearer-sounding, and some people might like it better.

Thanks for listening, everyone! ^_^

 Poor Mallow. *sniff* *sniff* Well you've really got me on this song. It's emotional, to say the least. 2:30 - 2:44 is no doubt my favorite part. It just ooozes feeling. It's so good to see you finally get one on the main page, Dhsu. :nicework:

I could just burn this onto a cd full of classical music by some you know Beethoven, Mozart, those stuff, and people would just think it was just another classical musical composition...hahaha, its from a video game!

A great theme, taking one of the sad tunes from SMRPG, and turning it into Beethoven-like music...seriously...just listen...it is da bomb!!!!!!!!

hmm...i already posted a reply in the Remixs in Progress thread about this one!

But i decided to post once more :P

This remix is really a classical masterpiece, it had me sitting there with my eyes closed, absorbing the music as i do when i listen to classical music. Really awesome piece, and i totally agree with maplejet that this could fit in with the great genius composers like beethoven and mozart at the time! I know this one is gonna go onto a future cd that i might make! It would be good for road trips...cause i could get lost in this song foreeverr!!

AWesome job...keep it up!

Can everyone say, "instant classic" or "masterpiece"?

Well, they better, or else shame on them... :)

This is among my new favorite remixes.

I love almost any kind of music, as long as it's not cheesy and has heart to it, that's what this has... heart.

I love it... not in that "I'm taking you home to meet my parents" way, but you get the idea.

Good stuff from Blak Omen & Dhsu. Keep up the good work guys.

Just a tip... you feel like this was classic music because the original song was already a remix from some classical music. But can't recall if the author was Beethoven or Mozart. I think it was Beethoven. So this song is the remix of the remix.

(If the MRPG song can actually be called a remix, that is. )

Nonetheless, the song rocks!
:)

Btw, I have nothing to do with Mythril Nazgul. It's just mere coincidence we use similar nicknames. I used to use lots of different nicknames, but now I just stick for two nicks. Mythrill is the one I use most. Another difference: "Mythril Nazgul" is female, and I, "Mythrill" (two "ll"s) am male.

What can I say? I already spewed my musical guts all over the WIP page, and I stand firm with those accolades. This is a great piece!

Are you positive? I'd be very interested hearing the original composition...I'm sure Beethoven's version is many times better than ours. O_o

Anyway, anyone who wants a copy of the original sheets that Blak sent to me, you can get 'em here:
Waltz of Pain sheets (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~david-hsu/misc/sadsong.zip)

Or if you want the high quality version...
Higher quality sheets (2 MB) (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~david-hsu/misc/Waltzofpain_sheet.zip)

And here's what they sound like (included in the high quality sheets):
MIDI file (http://personal.utulsa.edu/~david-hsu/misc/sadsongpiano.mid)

DISCLAIMER: I made a LOT of changes to the original arrangement, so don't expect it to sound exactly like my version. You're free to try out your own improvisations and stuff...but just be aware that results may vary. I'd be interested in hearing what people come up with, though. :)

It kinda sounds like its by Chopin, cause i know ive heard this melody before somewhere...but if anyone knows the name/author for the original song then they should definetely share it with us :D

Well, I wasn't aware that there was an original "Sad Song" before SMRPG - if anyone knows what it is I'd like to check it out. ^_^

I wrote this piece basically quite structurally, the original source was only about a minute. But immediately when I heard it in game I knew that it was a fantastic song and was surprised to see that nobody had mixed it. So, I did it myself.

I wrote this quite a while ago and I'm glad it didn't get in first time. Listening back the version I submitted was horrible.

The song itself is divided into theme, variation 1, variation 2 and development and ending I think.

And I love Chopin, he's my favourite piano composer. Ever. So fantastic.

Any questions about the arrangement I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks for all the support! ^_^

The version that's not on this site actually seems more with the original song I've heard before than SMRPG Sad Song.

The original theme sounds quite original to me, and this arrangement is actually very good in terms of the classical theme & variations style.

If anything, it reminds me of a motif from Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor (http://classicalmus.hispeed.com/schumann/pianoconcerto.html). Other than that, I see no reason why it can't be somewhat original as the sound is easy to imitate.

Damn... When I posted.. everything dissappeared... well, here we go again..

Despite my bad english I just have to say what I feel about this remix. Every time I open the OC Remix start page I have a small hope that a new piano arrangement is out. And the first sentence from djpretzel goes like this: "Quite the good solo piano arrangements we've seen lately". I didn't read another word, I just throw myself on the download button. (I read the rest later of course).

I think I listened to it three times in a row, and raised the volume a little more for each time. Just... wonderful. If my vocabulary was better, I would have said a lot more, but... Well, i like it, very much! :D

Can't wait for next piano arrangement :)

I already commented on this at VGMix, but I just gotta say that this song is fabulous. This fits the huge gap on OCR as well, as there are very very few classical piano arrangements on this site (I don't consider my style classical at all). Also, speaking from a classical pianist's perspective, this song blew me away, as it is very intricate and complex, while providing great emotion, and the sense of direction is clear: they knew what he was doing. Black Omen's arranging, Dshu's playing, along with some of his flair, and MC's rendering go together quite well. A great inspiration and motivation to see people making things like this, and for games haha!!

Very genius and well thought out. Don't hesitate to download this one..

this reminds me of the "Blackbird" WIP you (Dhsu, or i think it was you...) posted awhile back.

not as depressing, but certainly hits that button. and always very good.

another good song to kill yourself too, im beginning to wonder where the motive for such depressing music comes from....

Ahaha...eh, hm...well, what can I say? Despair is one of the strongest emotions. Although, Blak_Omen did the arranging this time around, not me. And Black Bird was for a Halloween contest. I was forced to make it depressing. ;)

Actually, I think Sil was just saying that certain parts of the arrangement reminded him of the Schumann concerto, but weren't actually taken from it. I really wouldn't know, though...it's a nice concerto, though! ^_^

I remember this song, it was always sad and almost humorous when it was used. This remix does the song justice. It captures the essence and feel to the song that the SNES's quality could only begin to handle. It is well written, this song works well with just a piano. It makes me think of the piano in "To Zanarkand". :) Well done.

I play alot of classical music, and when I brought this up on the piano my mom thought it was a song by chopin that I was learning.

Can't get much better than being mistaken for chopin.

This song is it, entirely. The piano is just secksi.

Man, this ReMix brings back so many memories... bein' in preschool, playing with friends... then a few years later, one of my friends moved away. I couldn't stop thinking about this music (original Sad Song)... I cried so hard. Time passed, and a concussion helped destroy any memory of the song.
Then I found this site, and downloaded this great mix, "Waltz of Pain." The title drew me in. I opened up WinAmp and played it. Nothing could have been more beautiful. I love this remix, and have put it on almost every single playlist, especially my CD called "Requiem of Happiness"

Such a brilliant little flourish. Definately a real pianist, nothing wrong with this song... it could be like... a concerto or something.
The peak built to at 1:38 is absolutely gorgeous. Very expressive.
Very painful, very good.

How have I not reviewed this song yet...? I could have sworn I did, but I've been flinging praise around the boards for some time now, so I might as well make it official.

Checking my Windows Media Player... I have now listened to Waltz of Pain 89 times. That just barely moves it into first place for the most commonly listened to song on my computer. This also does not count the countless number of times I have listened to it on CD, as it has a spot on 2 of my 3 OCR mix CDs. Let me explain why.

This song is amazing. This is the second song I downloaded from OCR, and to this day remains one of my favorites. The subtlety and skill with which this piece is played, combined with the masterful arrangement, makes this an instant classic in my book. It stands alone as a piece completely unique from everything else I've downloaded from OCR. It's a wonderful interpretation of the Sad Song from Super Mario RPG, and really evokes the pity and sorrow you feel for Mallow. And then, at 1'20", the more solid chords and volume build express the frustration. I can still picture Croc stealing Mallow's wallet, and the ensuing chase. It's all there in the song, mingling with some excellent piano playing. If I had to give this an award, I would probably give it an award for being the "Most Human Remix." You can see all the effort that went into making this piece, and how much it payed off.

I want to see more remixes like this. Excellent work.

That was very nice. The only thing I would change is maybe mix it up a little bit with something other than piano. I mean, keep the classical tone in there but throw some other things in there like maybe a solo violinist. Then again, that's just me. I still give it a 9/10 though. It's a very beautiful song.

Simply beautiful, no other way to put it.
Had I not been a gamer, I would have guessed that this is a piece from the Romantic era.

this is my favorite type of remix--solo piano works that take the original song to a whole new level. i love this remix, the melody is hauntingly beautiful, so dark and mysterious, and a little tragic. and (i'm agreeing with everyone else), it sounds like one of Chopin's waltzes straight out of the Romantic period...

Wow, another amazing piano mix. I don't know which of the dudes involved is doing the piano (MC?), but s/he is very talented. Of course, what good is an awesome pianist without awesome music to play? I keep seeing Blak_Omen's name on some very awesome remixes (FF9 Hunter's Etude makes me wet myself). Regardless of who killed who, this is a very powerful and emotive song. You can hear the pain/agony behind it. Starts out slow, works up to a very awesome climax around 2:30-2:40, then slowly works its way down to nothingness. Very nice, very powerful, very moving. So to the guys who did this, keep doing whatever it is you're doing, it's great.

ok, I've been going around the website for several hours now, and finally I struck pure gold. There is amazing music on this website but this song truly defines the purpose of OCRemix. I registered just now so I could show my appreciation for this song.

I'm listening to it for the 3rd time in a row and I still have shivers. Such emotions involved... poor mallow... his grandfather's a frog... how cruel

I'm a huge fan of piano mixes and this is a terrific arrangement! I don't know how I haven't found this before. This is one of those songs that clearly outdoes the source material by leaps and bounds (no pun intended).

Excellent arrangement and beautifully recorded and and played. I spent no time adding this to my media player!

The piano sound is a little on the colder side of things, but the performance is very nice, and the arrangement itself is very nice. I wish it was a little louder, but otherwise, no complaints; this is very emotional and though it's more somber and introspective, I really like it. :-)

This is still one of the best piano mixes I've heard on OCR. The source was wonderfully sappy to start with, but you brought it into a whole other realm of gorgeous, gushing romance. Nicely done, you two!

I'd also like it to be louder, but I feel I should say that this is the song that got me 'into' OCR. Just a beautiful classical piano take on an already excellent, somber track. 6/5 stars.
