This is a screenshot of my typical FL Studio setup. I generally have my arrangement on one side, and the sequencing/plugins/mixer/file browser on the other side. Works quite well for me. I will never go back to single monitors again, if I can help it, there's just so many ways they're useful. Document on one screen, web browser on the other (great for research papers), game on one screen, walkthrough on the other (cough)....actually, I want to eventually have a nice big TV connected to this machine, too, and position it above the two screens I have. Media center FTW.

I'll just say that if you have the money and the space available for two monitors, GET THEM. So utterly useful.

Edit: and the apple stickers came with my MacBook / Logic Pro 8, not pictured. :D

flex, i use a very similar layout. i have a tertiary 17" that i use 'below' my primary 28" (it's to the left but it's technically below mine in layout), and that's where my mixer and sidebar go. the rest is up on the main screens.

I want to get chrome pickup covers put on, which I believe will make it look 5x better.

I don't have an amp to play it through right now though. I still practice unplugged, but I would like to hear some good sounds some time soon (Marshall JVM205H *drool*

1) Do the dear heads do anything for the acoustic treatment of the room?

2) Where's your other monitor in those last pictures?

LOL I never thought of them as acoustic treatment. I believe they help some, but nothing like the actual stuff. The "monitor" is an HDTV, I have it hooked up for teh m0vies. Thanks to my Radeon 5770 for running all 3 at once.

I feel retarded now. :banghead:

They are Event Studio Precision 8 monitors. I don't think they make them anymore, but they sound awesome. I prefer them well over the Mackie HR-824's, which I was think about getting at the time. I currently have them set up as my speakers for my TV, because its speakers blow real hard. No surround sound yet.

Nice. I could not for the life of me figure out how to operate the Fantom G, but it has some nice sounds. I do not like the aftertouch though, not even a little bit. Maybe it's adjustable, but I found that I had to mash the keys down with an absurd and completely unplayable amount of force to trigger it.

Also, for some reasons Snapple's desktop wallpaper strikes me as not very Snappleman-ish.

SnappleMan
05-29-2010, 08:44 PM
The aftertouch is a total pain in the ass! Takes way too much pressure. as for the sounds, they're really really great, only thing is that the patches are pretty basic, I've been making my own patches using the sounds and they rival anything I've heard from any VST sample library. What's interesting is that I find myself using the things I didn't think I would be using, like the sampler and sequencer. The effects on it are pretty amazing too.

I'd start looking for a replacement for that X-stand though - think of something like http://stands.pl/?strona=produkt&id=181&grupa=1&lang=en (or equivalent, I'm sure Quiklok or Ultimate or whatever has something similar).

It won't wobble and it won't collapse either, something X-stands might do eventually.

Are those the CDJ 2000's or "just" the 900's? I quote that because even with the 900's you can do a lot of things with them, and MIDI capability is pretty much a must with high end DJ equipment these days.

You can store all your songs in them without needing a computer, right?

DJ SymBiotiX
06-15-2010, 12:44 PM
900's. I dont think they have that much memory (I'm pretty sure you can store some songs on it, but I dont remember how much), so I just use USB most of the time and keep all my songs on my usb drive. I havent really tried any midi functionality on them yet. I dont really see a need :P

let's see if this works.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/4864862200_08d1948302_b.jpg

clockwise, starting from the amp.
Fender bxr-150 100w amp (150$ on craigslist)
Kay mandolin, circa 1975 (200$ on craigslist)
Washburn 12-string (two crappy mics, a 6-channel mixer, and 50$ on craigslist)
ESP LTD B-416 6-string bass (125$ on craigslist)
Ibanez EW20ZWE acoustic (wife bought it for me as a wedding gift)
Squier 4-string acoustic bass (75$ on craigslist)

the recliner was 25$, from a roomie who was moving out in college. got the drum for christmas, has a nice clear tone to it even though it's small. also, the big open space between the bookshelves (where the flashlight and trumpet are now) now holds posters for ODST and Red Faction: Guerrilla. the bookshelves hold authors such as Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Jack McDevitt, and Tom Clancy.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/4864245833_df1385ce62_b.jpg

this is just to the side of that picture. i nabbed the TV from our landlords, who left it there. you can see my N64, Genesis (1601, got it and five games for 35$ on craigslist), and SNES (another craigslist nab, 30 games and two controllers for 50$). the speakers on the lower left are hooked up now. in the bin to the right of the cabinet is another N64, two GameCubes, a PlayStation One, and a lone NES gun (i don't own an NES, dunno where i got it from). the tall storage to the right of the concrete post is my computer building supplies. all the way on the right, behind my head, is my 1UP mushroom i got at MAGFest 7.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4094/4864869102_ed6bfcc276_b.jpg

the mothership itself. you can tell where this relative to the last two pictures by the shelf in the lower right.

three monitors - 17" square for email, 28" primary, 22" secondary on a monitor arm (going clockwise from me).
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface under the 17". between that and the 28" is my headphones - a Sennheiser HD280 Pro (closed ear) and an Alessandro Labs Grado Music Series Two (open ear). i use a Logitech G15 keyboard and Revolution MX mouse. the speakers are NHT M-00 studio monitors (sub is forthcoming, hopefully in september), and there's an M-Audio Axiom 49 on the stand there. the computer under the desk itself is encased in a Zalman GS-1000 case, and consists of an i7-860 2.8ghz quad core clocked up to 3.5ghz (on air!), hand-lapped Cooler Master Hyper 212 heatsink, eVGA GTX 260 core 216 gfx card, G.SKILL 2x2gb DDR3 1600 ram, total of 3.8tb of internal HD space (there's a 1tb external between the saffire pro 40 and the shelf up to), eVGA P55 SLI motherboard, LG DVD-RW drive, and a Seasonic X750 750w power supply.

oh, and i put a bunch of posters up to cover up the painted-on crap our landlords did - a big one of P.O.D., medium one of FF:Dissidia, and one of Mass Effect 2.

don't have a picture of the AV area upstairs, but it's got a 47" 1080p HDTV, with a set of Logitech Z5500 5.1 speakers. I've got my PS3 (CECHE model), X360 Slim, X360 jasper (250gb HD, banned and flashed with iXtreme 1.61), and the usual CD changer, radio, VCR, and iPod cable all rigged into the sound system.

welp, there's my office area/man cave. whatcha think?

long time no post, but i'll have some significant upgrades and photos in a few months when i get everything together... i bought a house, so i'm no longer making music in the old apartment, haha

i got rid of the dbx 162sl and have added a digi elevenrack and waves GTR to the mix. come early next year, i'm adding a manley voxbox and blue kiwi, swapping out my crap cme midi keyboard for a novation sl-mk2, and possibly investing in some new monitors (thinking m-audio dsm-2)... i'm debating on moving from my emu 1616m to a lynx aurora-8, but i don't really need the extra outputs until i get a summing amp, i think, and i'd rather add a dedicated clock into the mix first as well

i'll have photos once all my crap arrives, and maybe i'll have a nice desk then too, haha

Shaggy Freak,

With the way Record works, it just made sense since each channel strip is pretty long. It only starts getting cumbersome when I go over 12 tracks. Having a surface controller does help for that, though.

This is the desk: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Studio-RTA-Creation-Station-Studio-Desk-102924578-i1152461.gc

I've had it about three years now and so far it's worked out rather well. Be careful if you try moving it around on carpet with all your gear on the desk. I did that and one of the wheels broke right off when it got stuck on a piece of the rug. It wasn't a big deal, though. I was able to just drill some new holes and put it right back on. what other basic stuff do you need for a "studio" besides a midi controller keyboard? I, like katethegreat19 use both acoustic instruments & electronic VSTs. here's some of what I have already:
PC w/1000 GB storage
casio px-575r keyboard as midi controller

some of my acoustic instruments
violin
lap harp
guitar
pan flute
ukulele

some of my VSTs
4front piano module(free)
DSK WORLD STRINGS(FREE)
EDIROL ORCHESTRAL(FREE, LOOKING FOR A BETTER CELLO PATCH)

other equipment
USB LOGITECH MIC
acoustic mic w/pop filter
mic stand

software
mixcraft 4(i'm a total noob when it comes to combining the computer with my music. otherwise I'd use fruity loops)
beatcraft(drum program for a noob)

Are two computer screens a necessity for a home studio? cuz I've seen lots of studio pics here with two. my studio desk is tiny. fitting two screens on it will be difficult.

big giant circles

Not necessary, but it just gives you more real estate, which is always nice since it can get hard to squeeze all the necessary windows and GUIs on one screen.

you're an FL user, right? i've often seen people use a large primary and a smaller secondary to fit their playlist and mixer on the second and their piano roll, synth settings, etc on the big one. works really nice. i used three for a while, with the playlist being on the third, but it's a bit excessive in my opinion.

With Reason/Record, I find that two screens really helps a lot. I can have the mixer window in one and the rack/note lanes in the other. It helps out with my work flow quite a bit.

Yeah the ability to watch the playhead's position on both the mixer and the piano roll in Logic, while also monitoring all of the plug-ins on another screen helps a ton. It's not necessary, it just prevents me from swapping Spaces and possibly missing something in the process.

Also, using a huge 1920 x 1080 screen for my plug-ins is awesome. Imagine "World's Largest Effects Rack" :P

Yes, that keyboard is a Casio CTK-471 I got at a garage sale for $15, but my ONLY requirement was that it come with MIDI In/Out ports to interface with FL with. It is hooked up to the computer with a generic MIDI-USB connection I got for $2.50 on Amazon. Headset on the left side of the computer are Koss Solos, I need a new pair, they are wearing out. Got them for $20 bucks.

Microphone is a Radio Shack 33-3039 I picked up for $35 I think. The monitor is a 20" Acer H203H. My speakers are 2.1 Altec Lansing 121is I picked up for $20 bucks at a local surplus/salvage store. They are the best bang for the buck. (Regular price $50)

And of course, FL Studio 8; fan of the classics, baby. :)

Yep. It's the Profire 2626. Great preamp, crappy soundcard. Or at least, the drivers are total garbage. M-audio really lost a customer over that issue, and I'm one of a long list of people who've had endless BSODs in Win 7 from awful awful drivers.

I'm probably going to swap it out for something soon. DannyB tells me the new Komplete Audio 6 (http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/komplete-audio-6/) is pretty sweet, so maybe I'll snag that.

m-audio drivers for xp were okay, but they seem to have gotten worse with their vista and 7 implementations. i've still got a little mobilepre somewhere, and while it works pretty well on XP (albeit a bit clunky sometimes), it's terrible in 7.

That was free (donated from Shariq). We don't know if it's a bad card or it had problems with Shariq's system drivers (freezing issues),
but he gave it to me, I'm hoping it can work on a fresh driver install.

If it doesn't, I'm buying a GTX 460 1GB. There's enough room in the budget to get one. :D

And you can't see, but that's actually a Core i7-2600. It was $250 on eBay, top rated seller, brand new sealed, i couldn't resist. Some savings I made from rebates/coupons on other stuff made room in the budget for this, and I still have enough for a GTX 460 if I need it. And it came from newegg for some reason, with a voucher for Lost Planet 2. I think the game itself justifies getting the i7. :P

I indeed went for the 640GB over 1TB Caviar Black to make room for a GTX 460 if needed. Besides, I don't really consume media, so I'm going to have like 300 GB free for a while.

Will do, but if it works just fine, I'll just stay with it. GTX 260 is still a pretty good card, I should get decent performance at 1080 in modern games with high settings, correct?

I think the amount of power this rig has is astounding for what we had to pay for it regardless, and I'm in high school, so I don't really need a gaming monster atm. This should satisfy my gaming needs. As you said to me, earlier, all I'm gonna be doing is playing some games and making music.

decent performance, yeah. a good bench is starcraft 2 - i maxed it out except for one of the shadow settings and was getting roughly 25fps. playable but not as smooth as i wanted. the difference in shaders is what makes the difference with some of the new shadow rendering tech in some of the newer games out there.

but yeah, it should be fine for tf2 and the like.

I added a blue fan. It's a little loud but I'll figure out how to slow it down (it's running at 1800 RPM).

EDIT: It's normal volume as my other fans now, dunno the RPM's, but I found out how to drop it from 12v to 7v by switching pins on a molex power connector. If any of you guys have loud case fans that have a molex power connector (or a converter from the motherboard 3pin to a molex power male) and you can't change the fan speed to quiet it down, you should try it. Takes like 3 minutes.

Oh I know that it's very useful, it's just that I personally don't like it. It doesn't feel right after fiddling around with a regular full size key (old old old 20 year) synth so much. Also, the keys only go down a little bit, I had trouble figuring out what was supposed to be a hard press and what wasn't when I first tested the velocity sensitivity.

Souliarc
06-15-2011, 11:23 PM
Trying to compare a full size keyboard with something that is supposed to fit in your laptop bag isn't really fair. They are a different class. Of course it isn't going to feel right comparatively, but again, that's not the point. Besides, the velocity sensitivity may not be on board with a Steinway, but it is miles ahead of the Korg nanoKEY.

Alright neblix... when there is a product mentioned and you mention the qualities of another product, that's comparing. When you mention the qualities of a product that is in a totally different class (like a mid-size sedan vs. a coupe), that's borderline irrelevant.

To say "I didn't like the size" in regards to a product that is meant to be small, is silly.

I'm not comparing them, I'm saying they're uncomfortable to use for someone who is used to longer, more spaced out keys.

Basically, this can be completely omitted because I'm pretty sure anybody with some decent common sense would know that a product deemed with the quality of "laptop portable" is going to have a more "scrunched" design and not as comfortable as, say, my Radium 61.

No big deal though.
