Interesting set up, but your monitor placement is vacuous. What is the rack-mount device underneath the portable recorder?

then let's start an '08 one. i nominate you :)
well, a new computer is next on my list of improvements, but until then, i'm stuck with my crappy 17" iMac. if i place it any farther back, it strains my eyes.
the rack mount device is a Tascam US-1641 interface. I've only had it for a little over a month, but I'd like to sell it and get an Alesis IO/26.
The US-1641 runs $400, but I'd part with it for about half that if anyone's interested...

I'd start a new thread but I have no (2008) content to immediately contribute; I do find that a inconsiderate way to start threads :)
I may have failed to communicate, I was talking about your monitor speakers, not your computer display. It seems like they'd be laterally parallel with your head when you're at your computer.
cheers.

BGC, how are you liking Kore 2? Its something that interests me quite a bit, since the academic version is close to my price range :-). Do you find you can make a sound from the soundbank sound a lot different than it originally did just by tweaking shiz? I don't like the idea of soundbanks, but if you can change the original sound sufficiently i think i could live with it. The search function looks sexilicious.
Nice set up btw, BX5s/BX8s are amazing, even if they are in wonky spots ;-)

I recently got Kore 2. BIG WARNING: If you plan on using plugins that don't load patches on their own (i.e. they rely on the host interface to load patches for them, in fxp or fxb format), Kore WILL NOT let you load them, and those plugins are basically useless other than whatever default presets the plugins might have unless you program all the sounds yourself. I've also asked NI directly and they have no intention of adding this functionality anytime soon.
That said, I'm quite happy with it. I can live with the plugin patch loading problem since I only have one plugin that doesn't load any presets within its own interface (and it's a smaller one, so the author is considering adding that functionality because I mentioned the incompatibility with Kore). I don't really do a lot of sound tweaking; I mainly got Kore so I could have an easy way to organize the sounds I'd use in a live performance situation and for the searching features.
Soundbanks really haven't been an issue to me. I've been using them solely as a way of indicating where the sound came from. There's nothing forcing you to do this though; you could put everything in one soundbank if you wanted and essentially ignore the idea of soundbanks altogether. I find it helpful to have some organization. Searching is also done across soundbanks, so I haven't felt limited in any way.

Kore 2 is AWESOME. Only drawback is that I never get anything done. I spend too much time playing with all the banks--especially since I got Komplete 5 recently. Also, I just downloaded the updates from NI service center last night, and I'm not sure exactly what it did, but it seems to have organized/integrated all the sounds from the NI plugins themselves directly into the Kore engine, which means I don't think I have to specifically load the plugins into Kore to get their sounds now. It's HAWT.
As far as the BX monitors go, I was torn between them and the new EX66's, which are supposed to be uber elite. However, since I already dig the way the BX8A's sounded, I figured I'd just save the money and settle for them :)
Unfortunately, my right one has already gone bad, so I called M-Audio about it, and they were super cool. They're sending a new pair right away, Fed-Ex 3-day with no shipping, and a tag to send this pair back for free. Good service! I really like M-Audio's stuff, and I'm happy that they did not disappoint with their response to my situation. :)

So.... Would someone who spends hours tweaking an initial patch of a synth or tweaking the shit out of a weird sample find Kore 2 worthy?
And I totally thought those were the bx5s, I guess I have a different kind of BX8s.

Yes. That is totally the point of Kore :) It just gives you more to tweak right off the bat, as well as a super tweakable interface.
Also, The BX "deluxe" series just came out, and they're (as far as I can tell) exactly the same with the exception that they're all black on black, and have a 1.5" tweeter vs a 1".

They're cheaper than you'd think. I got that one for $600, and that was including the case. Maybe I got lucky but still, not bad considering it was worth every penny. I have yet to use it too much in actual production but live that thing is invaluable.

How'd you pull that off? Is it the original version instead of the Lead 2 or 2x? I've poked around eBay and a couple local music shops and haven't found any Nord keyboards for anywhere near that price.

Just a lead 2, but really the extra sample rate isn't quite essential and there's enough patches on the thing that you probably won't miss the extra ones either. It was just on eBay with the Buy it Now price being $600.

Nice find then. A Nord is on my list of "things to buy were I to be given an exorbitant amount of money" list, so I'm not in the market for one anytime soon, but I'll probably keep my eyes open to see if I can score a good deal like that.

I actually got rid of the Virus about a week after I got it, just because I didn't feel it was good enough to justify spending $2G on it (that said, I will probably try finding a second-hand C or B). But yeah, I'm mainly aiming more at producing at the moment. I've actually started building up a vinyl collection anyway despite my lack of DJ equipment just because I really want to get back into it again. I do download tracks from Beatport though and make mixes in Ableton (actually thats whats going on in the window below this).

How much did those drums run you? And how do you interface them into the computer?
Kanthos
06-20-2008, 05:57 PM
Not sure about that particular kit, but the few different electric drum kits I've seen all have MIDI out, so you'd connect that to a MIDI in on your computer or on another device (audio interface, maybe) connected to your computer.
The Pezman
06-20-2008, 05:59 PM
The problem is that the sound device that comes with the drums themselves makes up half the price. I'd love to get the drums without the device and hook them up directly to my machine, but those particular outputs don't seem suited to the task. Has anyone done this?

BGC got a new badass mic + BGC can sing and play guitar = BGC owes OCR a hot vocal mix.
DJ SymBiotiX
06-20-2008, 07:19 PM
Well, I can either plug the output sound from the drums to the line in on my computer to record the sound that actually comes with the kit, or
Drum Set -> Midi Out -> UX16 Midi to USB -> USB Slot on computer
The set cost me like ~$1950.00, DTSXPIV I think that was the model. DTS Extreme 4 I think it is called. Yamaha btw.
When I connect it via line in there is some lag for some reason <_<, so I usually connect a splitter to the line out from the drums, on one I connect my headphones to listen, and on 2 I connect to my computer. The drum control box also has line in so I can hear whats coming in and play drums over that.
When I connect via midi, there is barely any lag (just slightly noticable), and I usually connect it to reason and play it like that.

The question is, does that MIDI setup still require that box that came with the drums? I hope the answer is no.

DJ already answered your question but something to consider is that the drum sounds on those modules are generally quite good, and if you have any lag from triggering samples on your computer then they wouldn't be as good a practice tool. That said, if you really didn't want to spend a lot of money on the drum module, you can buy the necessary pads separately and get a cheaper module, or look for a deal on Ebay. Most modules, even really cheap ones, should have midi output, but they'll have less inputs for drum pads.

That's it. Yes, that's a recycled stereo for monitoring. The keyboard doesn't even interface; I have it hooked up so I can record WAVs from it when I get into a riffy mood. Usually I transcribe the good bits from a session into an FL sequence, and build from there.

Okay, here's the mini "studio" I'm working from while on vacation at my mother in laws house in Tacoma, WA. Huge thanks to norg for lending me that Axiom 25 and his 5 string bass. In all I'm running everything off of that little laptop. Mainly working with Cubase 4, Drumkit From Hell Superior (Superior 2.0 as soon as it ships :D:D:D) and various softsynths and libraries. The instruments are a Hohner B Bass V, Carvin DC127 guitar, shitty strat copy which I have modified into a 7 string (B to B tuning) and a badass green pickup and scalloped fingerboard. Not pictured are the little practice amp that I'm running Waves GTR3 through, and my Shure SM57 that records it.
http://www.inverteddungeon.com/triacesuperfan/SnappleMan/IMGP0224.JPG
Oh, and norg and I built that awesome table together last year because I had no place to record music when I visited here. I've "modified" it (aka put hooks and hangers on it) in a way that keeps the floor and surrounding area totally free from loose cabling. My work area is totally clean and very conducive to music creation.

I love all my Carvins, they're the best guitars I've ever played. As for the pickups, those are Carvin pickups made specifically for their guitars, they have 11 poles per coil, which helps get more of the sound per string.

http://www.shakal.net/lunar/temp/room.jpg
stuff = fairly cheap decade-old casio CTK-631, consumer-range creative 5.1 speakers which are in stupidass places (hard to know where else to put them), mu100 tone generator (out of shot on the desk behind the chair, w0pz), beyerdynamic dt-231 galactic cans (again, consumer range FWIW), and i'm using an audigy 2 soundcard. everything else is software, and there's not a whole lot of that either, relatively speaking. funtimes.
so yeah i should start laying down shitloads of dosh and get a more efficient work environment in here, for sure. it's pretty embarassing. it got me through my degree though.

Senor Harris-o, I used those Creative speakers a LOT when I was first starting. They actually give a pretty damn good monitor for music production. I'm kind of thinking of rigging up a couple of them on top of my BX8s to add to the highs (which for some reason seem to be lacking for where I have them). I also have that same monitor now as a second monitor...

Yeah they're not bad, wide frequency response. The biggest problem I have with them is the way they're positioned, I literally have no better way to position them in here. I'd need to buy a flat screen in order to get more space on the desk, this monitor is way too big, wish it'd just hurry up and die :D Also, I dunno... speaker systems with bass wheels on the volume control don't seem a good idea for mixing purposes. Admittedly I never touch the bass wheel, so I'm familiar with how much is too much/not enough bass, etc. Still an obstacle I'd rather not have, and if I'm ever going to be seriosmusicianlol then I'll need monitors. Better save the pennies eh?
I really like the look of that keyboard djp has. I'd like something similar, full range semi-weighted, pitch+mod (guess that's standard anyway) and maybe some other programmable faders/knobs. Also polyphonic aftertouch, though I don't know what sort of premium you pay for that. Then there's the question of whether it's worth spending extra for a ROMpler or synthesiser component, and who knows how many other features you only realise you want AFTER you've gone and made a purchase on something that doesn't asdhgbkhbasdk okay you get the point. I guess most of the time we're spoiled for choice with music gear, but keyboards seem especially bad in this respect.

Keyboards that include synth engines and sounds are good if you do live gigs. They're somewhat limited in a studio setting, and have a little more of a learning curve than throwing up a software plugin in order to get multitimbral sound. In the long run it's usually better to spend the bucks on a decent controller, especially if you're on a budget. Unless you're spending a whack of cash I usually find that you're going to compromise on either the action and quality of the controller, or the features of the sound module. A lot of manufacturers are a business first, and cater to musicians second. They're in it to make money and will cut corners wherever they think they can.

Seconded. I have my Motif ES 8 purely for piano-practice-with-headphones and live performance reasons. However it is phat and the sounds will eventually find it's way into my remixes (especially some of the synth sounds and ethno sounds)

Thanks, the track is Malevolent Mansion. :)
The keyboard is an Evolution MK-461C (http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-MK-461C-61-Note-MIDI-Keyboard/dp/B0002T6G5M). The 61 key setup is the perfect size for me, not too big and not too small. It's not bad for a MIDI controller, though the action isn't the greatest for realistically playing in live piano. All the knobs and sliders come in handy for automating volume and filters on loops when messing around with live performances. The majority of the time while producing, I just have my left hand on the keys while clicking sequences in with the right.

Just set it up yourself, you have more configuring to do in FL Studio than by using midi, as a matter of fact you can't set anything up solely with midi aside from the transport buttons.
Set it up using "link to controller" then save it as your new project template.

Yeah, Brad, I don't bother trying to get any one sort of ultimate Axiom preset going or anything. I do have a template for my mod wheel, and you have to disable the "send pitch bend range" option in almost all the plugins (which you only have to do once), but I just assign the knobs and sliders as I need them. So kind of what Brandon's talking about--just starting with a "blank" template, so to speak that you can set to whatever you want/need for any project.
I suppose I could set a "universal" template or two if I ever felt the pressing need, but seeing as I have a zillion plugins and can never tell what I'm going to use in each song from the get-go, I don't bother.

Totally tried following along with the MIDI image... couldn't see links at all. Esp at the end, when the snare drum does that riff which ends the bit... it looks like the hi hat does that on your specification.

There's no telling which part of the song that images was from, or from what zoom. I just bounced a random section of it for the mp3, way to be a total Star Trek convention nerd though :D
