OverClocked ReMix presents...
Philly Meetup: Episode III
Starring:
YOU
Where:
Philadelphia, PA (and surrounding area)
When:
Saturday, June 28th
12:00 noon at 30th Street Station (main concourse, by the info desk)
What:
Alright, so this year we have an idea for what could be a reaaaaaalllyyyy fun meetup. The Manayunk Arts Festival (http://www.gophila.com/C/Things_to_Do/211/Top_10_Things_to_Do_in_June/668/U/Manayunk_Arts_Festival/1998.html) will be happening on this date. It's a very popular annual event in Philadelphia, not just for art, but for food and music as well. Sounds nice, right? But there's more! As I was looking up the location on Google Maps to see what kind of public transportation would be available, I found this:
http://soundtempest.net/jill/epicpretzel.jpg
Brethren of OverClocked ReMix... Fate has called us to the Manayunk Pretzel. It is literally right where the R6 (regional rail) lets off, and two blocks away from the festival. I think this may potentially be the best photo opportunity this community has ever seen.
So yeah, plan would be to meet up at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia first, because it's the big hub for Amtrak and the regional rails. As soon as everyone is gathered, we can hop on the R6 to Manayunk ($3.50) and enjoy the food and festivities for the afternoon.
Once we head back to 30th Street Station in the early evening, folks can either head home or hop on the R5 ($7 and 15 minute ride) with zircon and myself to Ardmore. We have a nice new apartment, great flat screen TV, Wii, Xbox, PS2, and a grill... so BBQ and games will ensue! And this can also be extended to a sleepover if people are interested. As José put it, breakfast the next morning of a meetup is the best part! There is an IHOP just a five minutes' walk from our place.
So whaddya think? To help get an idea of what kind of food to buy for the BBQ, please post about whether you'll make it to that part of the meetup, and also if you'd like to sleep over! :<

Cool guys; have a meet-up when I'm home for summer.
I'll have to echo everyone else with the schedule dealie; there's always the possibility I can sneak back up to the city for that weekend.

Hmm.. I will have to think about it. I am free that day, but I want to figure out how much it'll cost overall before I make any sort of commitment. I haven't been paid yet this summer... ;_; Also, I might have some hook up with free BBQ sauce, but I don't want to take advantage of my friend too much. A bottle or two should be fine. If you buy it online, it's like 10 dollars each and that's a bunch for BBQ sauce.

I have my bet is on Pretzel.

Katsu et al: concerning the BBQ, people are welcome to bring things that don't need to be refrigerated as long as they don't mind carrying them around for the day. (Unless you'd be staying the night before, of course.) That being said, we can also just have everybody chip in a couple bucks at the end.
Commuting from NJ shouldn't be expensive or time-consuming, me thinks. And there's always the possibility of carpools. Once you're actually here, the costs would just be regional rail ($3.50 and $7 round trip) and whatever other food or things you'd buy.
And yays!

Awesome! I'm glad there's lots of interest here. Best way to get from NJ to Philly is via NJ Transit to 30th Street Station; should be <$20 round trip. Bus will work too, though it will probably take you into Center City in which case you gotta take a 5 minute, $2 subway ride to get to us.

The only thing about taking NJ Transit to Philly is that one of my friends told me that it's somewhat time consuming to do so if you're from the NYC suburbs in NJ. Depending on how cheap you are, it could be better to just take Greyhound.
So you'll still be using your place by Drexel then, or are we gonna be going to your place in Ardmore for the sleepover?
I'm there for the whole deal. Maybe I'll bring my acoustic guitar with for when we retire to the apartment. I don't play loud anyways. (Also, if possible, I'd like to park near the apartment like I did for the first Philly Meetup I came to, it's just easier for me so I don't have to worry about remembering where my car is.)

We'll be in our new apartment in Ardmore. This also means that if you park in Philly you'll have to drive to Ardmore to park overnight. Luckily it's a safe neighborhood, and we do have a parking lot in back (how baller is that?)

Awesome, parking in the lot. Nice. Just out of idle curiosity, what time do you plan on leaving for 30th Street Station?
Jillian Aversa

We'd have to catch the 11:28 train, so the latest anyone coming early to park should arrive, to be safe, is 11:00.

As a Drexel student (a whole 4 blocks away) and an avid listener of OCRemix, I am so totally there, for the festival and BBQ totally, and most likely the sleepover if there's still space.
Sounds like a great time!

05-30-2008, 06:19 PM
Cool! But yeah, it looks like we will be getting a lot of people at this meetup - it's only been two days since I posted the thread! Our new apartment is nice, but it's not huge and we do have very thin walls so sound travels to the neighbors. If this keeps up, we may have to give priority to people coming from a distance for the actual sleepover. (Those who live nearby could still meet up again in the morning for breakfast, though.)
Palpable

Totally interested and I'm almost positive I'll be available for this (again, depends on work). I'd be up for the sleepover as well, if there's still room at Andy's/Jill's rapidly filling apartment.

Oh gee, thanks for volunteering me :P
I'm still in a dorm, so I could only really do one guest. Seems like something we'd have to figure out once we get a definitive head-count. Even then, you cant really do a definitive head-count until the day of.

As of the moment, I am leaning towards going. But most likely, I will not be able to sleep over due to the number of people and I do not live terribly far either. Though I would like to get breakfast with you guys one day. The game playing would be great too. Anyway, that's the plan for now. Besides, my friend is on break for only a short while from UPenn during that time which is kind of unfortunate. Otherwise, I would definitely stay over or something. I only have weekends free mainly too.. I don't have a real summer vacation.

Jillian Aversa
06-03-2008, 06:33 AM
Andy and I will have to cap off the sleepover at 7 guests due to space. So far we're all booked, so that means as of now that Katsurugi, Dyne, and Sporknight won't be able to stay with us, sadly, since they aren't commuting as far.
Anyone new reading this: if you live nearby and could host anyone, please let us know! Sporknight said he could host one guest in his Drexel dorm. So that makes accomodations for 11 people total so far if you include zircon and I.
Sporknight: are you sure one guest is all you could do? When Andy was living in his closet of a Drexel dorm room, we managed to fit four people - two in bunk beds and two on the floor. :3
We probably won't have breakfast the next morning until around noon, so anyone having to commute would still have time and be welcome to return!

Hey Spork, what dorm are you in, out of curiosity?
I'm gonna be in North hall over the summer - which actually, as far as dorms go, is fairly spacious. Sure beats Calhoun freshman year *shudder*.
Were it not for the guest policy I could cram in quite a few more people, no doubt, but I'm only gonna be able to sign in one person. I could consider asking my suite/floormates to sign a few guests in, but I can't promise more then one spot at this point.
Jillian Aversa
06-04-2008, 05:21 AM
Funny, I don't remember the sign-in thing ever being an issue for us considering we were out of town friends. But maybe the hall you're moving to is stricter?

They might have changed the policies since I was in Van R... or it might be stricter, yeah. But actually, I seem to recall having to deal with getting help signing multiple people in for overnight stays. That definitely was a regulation we had to deal with at some point.

Boy, am I glad I checked the thread. Well, are there any hotels close by in Ardmore? If there are, maybe I'll just stay at one of those friday night, and just print some directions to 30th Street Station.
Edit
For the sake of my own sanity, if anyone (and by anyone, I do mean you Sporknight) is still able to host, I'd definitely do that as an alternative to a hotel room, but the question is...can you deal with epic snoring the likes of which you've only read about in books or heard about in nightmares????
Okay, it's not THAT bad. Anyway, either way, I'm going to do my best to find a place to stay...somehow.
I found a decent hotel in Center City, matter of fact, it's near last year's meet up point. Which is awesome. And it's affordable. So I might do that.
Jillian Aversa
06-05-2008, 05:33 AM
Center City is pretty far, though, if you'd want to hang out the next morning. Before you book anything, maybe Sporknight will be able to report on whether he can host people. Or someone else who can may show up...
EDIT:
Or since your drive is only an hour, you could save money by commuting if nobody is able to host.

I can still host a person, it's hosting more then one that would be difficult. I can handle the snoring, it's just you'd most likely be sleeping on the couch in the common area of the suite, so bring a sleeping bag or some sheets. Or, look into public transit options I suppose.

Why are the meetups so FAR away always :(
I wish you guys made a closer to the south for once so I could go, I've always wanted to go to one, but its always so very far from me :(
Even if it was Georgia or South C. or maybe even North C. I'd drive to that, but drive to Philly... way too far :(
Idk about planes, they are too expensive around this time of the year.
Is there a train that gets up there?

It's Philadelphia, so I'm sure that there's a train that goes there. It all just depends on where you're leaving from exactly. Personally, I think that trains can get to be very costly. But that all depends on what rail you use and how far you're traveling. If you are traveling that far, then you probably also have to find some place to stay too unless you plan on staying awake the entire time and only sleeping on the train. Figure out the costs for both plane and train. As you book tickets closer to the date, the prices skyrocket. A month in advance should give you a moderate price for plane tickets. Trains on the other hand are running all the time and are pretty much a flat fee. Considering that it's already June. Do it ASAP!
How far is Center City? I thought you guys were going to have a breakfast around 11 or 12. Dyne just has to wake up earlier.. But it seems as if spork can host him... if all goes well.

Drexel is in University City; from the dorms, it's a 10 min leisurely walk to the train station, 20 minute train ride to Ardmore, and 5-10 minute walk to our apartment. Center City is the area ~1 mile west of Drexel's campus. You can take the subway from there directly to 30th Street (which goes to Ardmore, as it's the train transport hub) easily.

Oh, man, this is PERFECTLY timed, if I can organize transportation.
I'm going to a gymnastics camp in State College, PA, starting June 29th.
Is there anybody comming from down south that could give me a ride up? I may be able to catch a bus up into VA if somebody could drive me the rest of the way.
EDIT: Actually, it appears a bus into Philly will only cost me about $50, so I should be able to swing that no problem. I'll need to know how to get from the bus stop to the meetup location, though.
Katsurugi
06-05-2008, 05:08 PM
It depends on what kind of bus it is. I would imagine that most buses would stop near or around the 30th St. Station which is the meetup location!

Greyhound.
It seems as if all of the Greyhound stations in Philly are near Metro stations as well. At the very worst, you are a subway ride and transfer over to 30th St. Station. The best case scenario is if you are dropped off at 30th St. which is a Greyhound bus stop. The only catch is that there is no actual station there. It just lets you get off.
The main Greyhound station is around 11th St. which is a block away from the subway on the Market-Frankford Line. Two other stations are located on Broad street. If at the North Broad Street Station, you would proceed to the Olney Transportation Center and take the subway south to City Hall on the Broad St. Line and transfer to the Market-Frankford Line. Conversely, if you are the South Broad Street Station, you will take the Broad St. Line north to City Hall and then transfer over to the Market-Frankford Line.
http://www.septa.org/maps/click_map.html
I have only been to Philadelphia twice before and have a very shallow understanding of their system and city... but this seems like the right way to go.
zircon
06-05-2008, 09:00 PM
Greyhound stops at 11th Street, but it's very very easy to get to 30th street from there. Here's how you do it. You are deposited in Market East station or thereabouts, which is about 1 minute from a Market-Frankford subway line (it's in the same general complex, you would just look for the signs.) You take it West and hop off at 30th street. No transfers.

WAIT!
SOLUTION!
Haaaaaahhahahaha... I can't believe we didn't think of this before. Andy and I will already be living in our apartment in Ardmore, yes, but our lease at the other place in University City doesn't expire until July 1st. So that means that everyone who can't fit in Ardmore will at least have plenty of space to sleep, and not worry about the Drexel dorms.
Granted, it will not be particularly glamorous given that all the furniture will be gone... But we can leave a few lamps, and donate comforters to help make the floor softer. And hopefully people can bring their own blankets and sleeping bags as well. For anyone staying at 34th street, those things can be dropped off between 12 and 1 on Saturday while we're all waiting for the train to Manayunk. It's just a 15 minute walk to the apartment.
After the festival during the day, people will be coming back to our place for BBQ and games anyway. So everyone can still stay as a big group to hang out. Going back to University City would just for the sleeping part, and then that group could come back in the morning for breakfast if they want!
Escariot, Dominique, and Taucer would most likely be with the Philly group because they have to leave earlier Sunday to get Tauce where he needs to go. So as long as one other person with a car could join that sleepover group, the others could still come back in the morning easily (and for cheaper, if we all pitch in for gas).
Will post more about space and spreading people out later tonight, after I've talked to more folks about their travel plans. Luckily, nobody will have to pay to stay in a hotel unless they want to, and the group will be about half and half, so nobody will be lonely!!!

So here I am posting that I am coming...

Depending what my girlfriend is doing at the time, she will be coming as well.
Damn you Escariot for making me post...
Also if you are lucky, I MAY bring a cut of the second episode of Eden: The Zhang Chronicles with new music by Bustatunes and Escariot doing a voice...

Jillian Aversa
06-06-2008, 02:49 AM
Okay, and yet another slight change of plans perhaps? Kroze lives in Cherry Hill, NJ, which is a 47 minute drive to Ardmore. He has graciously reported that he could host the other half of the group, if they'd prefer the longer commute over zircon's empty apartment. People might be more comfortable sleeping there. What do y'all say?
For Saturday night, the breakdown looks like this. Those who are carpooling together will be kept in groups for logistical reasons, and then José was the next non-carpooler to post about definitely sleeping over, so Andy and I can take him under our wing.
Ardmore:
zircon
pixietricks
djpretzel & Anna, Palpable & Amy, and Xerol (all carpooling together Friday night)
Bahamut (arriving Friday night)
José the Bronx Rican
With Kroze (or at the Philly apartment if people would rather do that over the 47-minute commute):
Kroze & his girlfriend
Dyne
Sporknight
Escariot, Dominique, and Geoffrey Taucer (all carpooling together; have to leave before the group breakfast on Sunday to get Tauce to his next destination)
Katsurugi (still hasn't decided about sleepover?)
And anyone else that may join up between now and June 28th!
Thanks very much to Kroze for offering up his place! Although it'd be more comfortable there I'm sure, the commute is over twice as long. If you could post your preference, we'll get a sense of things!
Anyone driving up Saturday morning is still welcome to park for free at our place in Ardmore if they arrive by 11:00 am. There's also parking in the city, but it'd probably be easier (and obviously cheaper) to do it in our lot.
For me it really depends on everyone else, I'll go with the flow, but in the case of casting a vote, I'm voting for the apartment in Philly only because it's in town. If everyone else decides to go to Kroze's, I'm cool with that.
Sporknight
06-07-2008, 12:13 AM
I'm fine either way as well. Go with the flow works for me - assuming there's sufficient bedding around I'd be fine with the empty apartment, or if we're not gonna be too much of a hassle I'd be fine with going to Kroze's. It's good to have both options available tho, definitely.
Jillian Aversa
06-07-2008, 01:02 AM
We have three comforters to spare, which could be used to help soften the floor below you. It's hardwood, though - no carpet. (And we wouldn't have any other additional blankets to provide for snuggliness over top.) So I do think Kroze's place would be more comfortable, especially if he has any couches or cots.

EDIT:
Ouch, Kroze and I just exchanged addresses... The drive from his place to ours is actually 47 minutes - versus 20 minutes from the Philly apartment. It's still up to you guys, but I just thought you should know in case this changes anything.

Does anyone coming need shirts/hoodies? I think most of us are covered, but if you do - either for yourself or someone you know - let me know types/sizes ahead of time and I'll bring 'em with. Discount convention prices of $10 for shirts and $20 for hoodies (and of course no S&H) would apply :-o

Nah, you don't need to bring anything (except money.) If you're driving, you'd need to drive to our apartment in Ardmore, and then take the train with us to get to the meetup spot (30th St Station.) That's the only way it would be free, anyway. But train would mean less to worry about.
Katsurugi
06-17-2008, 05:27 PM
I'd first just figure out the costs of driving versus train. But with a train, you wouldn't have to worry so much about getting to the station. You would have to be confined to a train schedule on the way there and on the way back. That's probably the main disadvantage of using the train. Money is probably the only thing you need unless you want to bring other stuff to keep you entertained on the train or whatever.
@ djp: I will require a large black hoodie. Bring one at the very least if you're not already bringing a box for Kroze.
I probably won't be able to stay overnight. I have a lot of stuff I need to take care of before going back to school on the Monday after. I still really need time to think about it. I hate cramming in stuff all in one day. I'll let you guys know at the end of the week. It's too early to tell yet. But sleeping in an empty apartment is fine with me.

I think the only second sleeping option at this point is Kroze's place, as opposed to our empty Philly apartment. There isn't going to be any air conditioning there, and the next tenants will likely be moving in by the 28th as it turns out.
I would recommend that people arriving Saturday not drive unless it's really necessary, because it'll probably be more hassle than taking the train. :3
EDIT:
And Atma, do you plan on coming to the BBQ and/or sleepover as well?

I'm not sure how it got decided that djp and I were carpooling with you, Xerol, but my car can't seat 5 people and all our stuff comfortably for three hours. So I won't be able to give you a ride. :-( Is it possible you can still drive, or catch a ride from someone else?

That being said, I'm along the way and if you want to swing by my place and trade a passenger so it's less crowded (and so I don't end up driving up alone and taking 4 hours and 230 miles again). At least let me know what timetable you were planning so I can somewhat plan around that.

Yeah, um... I even talked to Dave about it. I'm not sure why he didn't inform you, Vinnie... Xerol was in this from the beginning - even before significant others joined up. Are you sure you can't seat 5 people? No trunk? It's not like people will need much stuff for a short 2-day sleepover... Backpacks or duffles can be held on laps.

All right. I've got my final plans already ironed out. I will arrive at the station probably around 11:44 AM or so that's what the schedule tells me. I would like to stay for the BBQ, but I have to catch a 8:00 PM train at the 30th St. Station. I'm not too sure how well that would fit in. It all really depends on the timing. Heating up the grill and cooking takes time and all of that jazz. I would hate to go to Ardmore only to have to return after 15 minutes. So yeah, we'll see how it goes.
Anyone bringing Guitar Hero stuff? I think that would be quite suitable.
DJP: I will require a total of TWO large dark blue hoodies. I've realized that they don't come in black, but it would have been pretty cool if they did. Please respond so I know that you've read this post.

A heads-up to everyone who is staying overnight on Saturday:
Saturday marks the first day of the semifinals on OurStage. These only last Saturday and Sunday, and chances are, both myself and sgx will be in them, and competing for a $5,000 grand prize. We may want to do some group voting for a bit sometime on Saturday, but it might look fishy if many of you don't have accounts and the OS staff all of a sudden see a bunch of registrations from the same IP. So, if you'd like to help (it's simple and fun to judge) you might want to register an account now. :)
Jillian Aversa

Kulaman: we can't host any more people Friday night. Dave, Anna, Vinnie, Amy, Xerol, and Bahamut are all going to be there already. You two are welcome to journey up together Saturday morning, but it would still be nice if the former crew could fit Xerol since that was the original plan. Hoping Vinnie or Dave will see my previous post about that.
In other news...
Yes, you may want to register on OurStage.com if you haven't already! Andy could make it to the finals with TWO songs this month, so it would be really great to have your help voting at the meetup if that's the case. That would be fun, hehe.

Talking to djp last night it sounded like he and Anna wanted to get a hotel on Friday night. That would leave room for Kulaman, if he were to bring Xerol. Let's let Dave confirm though.
In case there isn't room at Jill/Andy's apartment for Kulaman, my car can physically take five, but it would be a very uncomfortable ride for those in the back. It's not a big car. I'm personally ok with it, but I'll be driving. :P I don't want to speak on behalf of those I've already promised I'm taking, i.e. Dave and Anna, whether they'd be ok with it.
Sorry for the miscommunications but yesterday Dave seemed as confused as me that we were supposed to be taking Xerol. I think this plan got decided without us. :< Thanks for offering your car up, Kulaman.

Andy and I definitely remember talking to Dave about it way back when... And I also remember Xerol bringing it up in IRC when he was there. But regardless, having three people in the back seat isn't really that bad. Andy and I drove from Baltimore to PA with 5 people in a rented PT Cruiser (read: tiny) with our stuff piled up practically to the ceiling (including laps) and it wasn't that bad. This, of course, would be nothing like that... :>
As soon as Dave can give a definitive answer about hotel-age with Anna, we can figure out who'll be driving when and with whom. Phew!

Whoops, Dave was planning to do the hotel thing Saturday, not Friday. So that means the Kulaman plan won't exactly work. When we've got everything figured out, I'll let everyone know what we decide.

NOTE: We will be meeting at noon, Saturday at the INFORMATION DESK in the middle of 30th Street Station, where all the Amtrak train times are. It's pretty hard to miss, as it's in the main concourse.
In case anyone misses us for any reason, either in Ardmore or the meetup point (30th Street), here are some directions.
READ THIS BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT
* If you're driving to Ardmore first, and you're going down Cricket Ave from Lancaster, look on your RIGHT. You'll be driving for a short distance, passing a parking lot, a pub, and a carpet cleaner on your right, before you arrive. Look for a two story red brick apartment building with black shutters. To the LEFT of the building is the entrance to our parking lot. It's narrow and will take you all the way behind our building, where you will see the parking lot itself. Don't park on the street!
* Once you are parked, go back to Cricket and walk back the way you came up to Lancaster (it's just a straight line.) You'll wind up at an intersection. Go STRAIGHT, passing in between the Primavera Pizza Kitchen on your left and Radioshack on your right. You'll walk straight into the train station, which is little more than a bunch of benches near the tracks. You should be able to find a door to the ticket office; the door faces outwards to the tracks. Get a round trip ticket to 30th Street Station, if you can. If the ticket office is closed, don't worry, you can get a ticket on the train for $5.
* Upon arriving at 30th Street Station, IF we are still there, then get to the main concourse, which is down a ramp. If we left for Manayunk, get to the ticket counter and simply buy a round trip ticket there. The clerk should tell you where to go.

Xerol is. But in his defense, his camera is very small and being that size and weight, it's difficult to keep still.
As for pictures, mine will be up next week. I have a specific place where I like to get my photos developed and scanned rather than your local Target or Rite Aid where some high school kids don't take pride in their work. Other people were using digital though.. they should have no excuse! ;)
It was cool to see/meet everyone though I know I wasn't there long enough to have a meaningful conversation with most everyone that came. Bowling was great. I haven't done it in a long while since the local one by me closed down. I finished half a subway footlong at the train station, which is kind of like a miniature bbq... okay.. it wasn't. But that's fine with me.
Well I certainly had fun. Can't wait to do it again, and I'm getting geared up for Otakon! Can't wait for the OCR Panel.

If people want, I'm willing to go to one sometime in July and I'll post a thread suggesting one tomorrow. The December ones are no good for you?
Let's have an NYC meetup to take a car/train down to Baltimore for Otakon. Now that I've missed this I feel like I have to go there.

Dyne was really good.
http://xerol.org/h/v/1261/djpbeer.jpg (http://xerol.org/h/img/1261)
The spoils of victory.
That all said, there's a possibility of a mid-July meetup (location TBD), and then Otakon. After that, I'm planning an Ocean City, Maryland meetup. This would probably be a weekend in October. Condos are really cheap to rent there that time of year (a Friday-Monday would be between $40-80 each for 8 people) but I need to know what weekends work best for everyone. Any weekend after Labor Day weekend in September or October is up for grabs, and I'll be deciding by popular vote. Once a date is decided I'm going to need $10-20 from everyone who's coming as a deposit (since I'd need to put a deposit down when reserving).
One example of a place I'm looking at. (http://www.shorepro.com/scripts/rentall/cobolcgi.dll?runcobol+rm1795i.cob+A='401+10/24+10/27+00570'+l=rmcgix32.dll) (This is actually my preferred location, and it seems to be open every weekend in October. It's near the boardwalk, and earlier in October the water should still be warm enough.)
I'll make a separate thread for this soon, but I want to see who's interested here first.

Haha, love that No Loitering pic! Man, we were awesome.
Xerol: do you know when Doug was planning on coming down to Baltimore? I definitely wouldn't be able to go the weekend of the 12th and 13th (music video shoot), and possibly not the weekend after for the same reason. Late July may also be a visit home to Boston, so I dunno yet if I could do this one.
