Okay, NOW the mixing stage is over. The entries have been verified and I think we're in for some competition.

So, all you have to do now is contribute to the voting phase. To do so, you will visit the ThaSauce link (http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/PRC123), listen to the three legibles and use the form at the bottom of the screen to order them from first to third. Contestants shouldn't vote for themselves but they will automatically get three points when they vote. Since I won PRC122, my vote counts twice, so I hope you've done enough to gain my persuasion. ;) You have until Wednesday, July 2nd at 4:59AM EST to cast your vote. The winner gets to choose the source tune for PRC124!

The People's Remix Competition 123
PRCv5-19

Hello everyone and welcome to the People's Remix Competition! (www.doulifee.com/prc/PrcSong/PRCcommercial.wmv) Last week's competition took us to some Sonic 3D Blast action, and in spite of a 24 hour extension, it was quite the active round with 4 entries to make a selection from. Once again you wanted to get me to choose the source tune for this round, and I believe I have something firm and ready for this one.

We are looking at another series that made the jump to 3D this round. Yet, as Sonic failed to make an impression the first time around, this feisty Italian plumber struck gold with one of the greatest games to be released on the Nintendo 64. Yeah, I gave the clue away too soon...!

http://bev.wooff.googlepages.com/prc123.PNG

Now, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see exactly how we are looking at a defining moment in gaming for a situation like this. To be honest, I am too; Koji Kondo has been a strong musical mind over the past few years, no doubt about it, and his material for Nintendo have been seen as defined classics regardless of the situation they were brought about for.

The score for Mario 64 was no exception to the rule either - most of it did indeed play safe though as a huge majority of the tunes fitted most of the typical feels for the different settings throughout, but it worked out really well in the long run and was responsible for some of the more upfront tunes that came to be remixed on OCR today.

The source material that is being towed in for this round is arguably the most known of the lot, if the music inside Peach's castle is taken out of the equation. It's pretty much got everything associatable with classic Mario written all over it - a catchy melodic line, the setting being happy as hell and there being enough to interpret for a wide number of different variations on this theme. I don't understand myself over why it hasn't even been remixed yet, because it was literally screaming "I want to get inside your head and leave you to whistle the tune all day long", or something.

Super Mario 64 - Main Theme
MIDI (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/PRC123_sm64theme.mid) | MP3 (http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/PRC123_sm64theme.mp3) | USF (http://bev.wooff.googlepages.com/prc123.miniusf) ( library (http://bev.wooff.googlepages.com/sm64.usflib))

I have the understanding that "Portrait of a Plumber" is in the works right about now, but I still think there needs to be some kind of source coverage even if that falls through. Either way, it's a requestite for a Mario main theme to obtain a bunch of remixes for itself, lol.

GOOD LUCK!

For a moment I thought "Main Theme" was going to be the title theme, which is just an arrangement of Super Mario Bros. I automatically associate the Super Mario 64 track with the title "Bob-Omb Battlefield". :?

Well, that's what the OST named it anyway. The title track is just referred to as "Title Theme". How creative. :p

Ooh, sweet. I might even come up with something this week.

Like just64helpin, I tend to call this track Bob-omb Battlefield, but I've gotten used to seeing it called "main theme". What I hate is when people try to get all creative with naming songs and you have to guess what they are. Most of the time they could be more easily identified by just using character/area names from the game.

Edit: Ok, I have 45 seconds down and I actually [i]like it, so that's a good sign. I'm going to try to do a story mix like I used to; people liked that. XD I haven't participated for 9 rounds, so hopefully I'll finish this. I was hoping to enter the Kirby 64 round, but I just wasn't feeling my remix.

I'm willing to bet we'll have the results by Tuesday (an extension for Super Mario 64? I should hope not). I'll be leaving for a week starting that day, so I'll be gone for the beginning of the next round. If anyone else wants to put together an advertising sig, it'll be up to them (although if I end up finishing my entry and winning, I'll probably just make Rexy post something I've prepared). It would be nice if someone could make the vgmix topic, but it's not like I can force you or anything. All you do is put Rexy's post in a big quote and change all the font sizes because vgmix uses massive numbers.

Edit2: Actually, I'm probably leaving on Monday. And what the hell? Don't tell me I'm the only one entering here...

I'm in! This seemed to suit a hardstyle remix quite good :)

I have something, but I'm not sure if I'll be well enough to finish it off.

Ah, good, I'm not the only one after all. XD

My entry is coming along nicely. Just passed the 2-minute mark, and I believe I've taken a somewhat unique approach. And you'll get an amazing piece of literature to go along with the mix, too! ;)

Eep, are you sick, just64? Hope you feel better! And not just because we need the competition, lol.

Just a little ear congestion and a sore throat, plus a sprained wrist. I should be fine... eventually.

Well, we have our first entry, fresh out of the oven!

Of course, I have been baking it bit by bit throughout the week.

I think I'll just salvage what I have and make a minimal piano piece.

Rexy

Even though there theoretically is 90 minutes to go, I think I should already grant a time extension. Two entries is looking good, but not exactly healthy for the state of the competition. I don't usually grant the extensions out until a couple of hours later til now, but since I'll be on a shopping trip for most of the morning I don't think I'll have time to manage it later.

PRC needs YOU. If you don't make mixes, then God kills a Cataquack.

Want my 'shamelessly-midi-ripped-but-still-very-cool-remix' here?
I just pimped the synths a bit and added some percussion (read: 4/4 stuff) :D
It doesn't have to be in the compo, I just wanted to hear what it would be like to have Mario trippin'.
So if any of you would like to hear it, let me know and i'll post it here. ;)

As fun as your submission was, all it was was a straight conversion with altered sounds, a tempo increase and crazy beatwork. I'm sorry, but the mix doesn't qualify. But at least it was very uplifting for this time of night :D

NeoS
06-28-2008, 11:22 PM
That's ok. I didn't intend on actually competing. I just felt i'd share this. At least it's not a half-bad midi-rip, eh? ;-)

Chickenwarlord
06-28-2008, 11:29 PM
DID SOMEONE SAY MIDI-RIP?
I am so there.
Working on a short entry soon.

Edit: So, this entry proves that I can neither improvise nor play the piano in real life. I should stick to just laying every note down in Garageband.

OneUp, that is some trippy stuff right there. I approve. XD

Also, yes, it should be "eligible" and "ineligible." Otherwise we're saying the remixes are able/unable to be read.

Blame it on Kamoh, I guess - I think that's how he used to label such tracks. ^^; I'll fix it.

With the descending minor-key harmonies, "Monsters Don't Hurt Mario" sounds for all the world like it could be a classic Mega Man tune.

I know you're new, but no qualititive commentary until AFTER the voting stage is over!

Rexy

Talking of which, it's over. Sorry about the wait - had a work placement interview earlier today.

Now, it's time for the results. I'm curious to know who gathered the most power stars and defeated Bowser in the process, and who actually stumbled at the first goomba present...!

Total number of mixes - 3
Total number of votes - 5
Highest possible score - 15

This is a rarity for PRC - every single vote has been unanimous, right down to the decision for last place. So, let's see what came out of it :D

Chickenwarlord swagged yet another last place wooden spoon with 7 points.

just64helpin piano-slammed over to second place with 10 points.

And the winner of PRC123 is Hylian Lemon with 15 points!

So, that's another PRC done and dusted. Ben can't be with us to ravel in his own victory, or be present for the next contest for that matter, but he did send a source tune in the event that this would happen. We should be good for PRC124 already.

I'll meet you on Friday - same peoples' time, same peoples' channel. ;)
