since this isn't really remixing: what programs would you recommend to use for remixing?

You might want to check out the Guides and Tutorials section (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29) on the forums, particularly the threads on starting to remix (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=11586) and mixing for free (http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1468) (if that's what you're looking for...).

As for specific programs, I'd recommend trying out several different ones and seeing what works best for you. Two of the more common programs used around here, FL Studio (http://www.flstudio.com/documents/download.html) and Reason (http://www.propellerheads.se/download/) both offer demos on their website.
