--------------------------------------

We'll see how long they let this hang around in Community.

Welcome to the July 2008 edition of OCR's "official" Fan Art Competition (FAC).

The winner of the previous month gets to choose the following month's theme. Last month's winner was Linkjing Donuts and he has selected a rather interesting theme for this month, one that I like quite a bit.

The theme is WEAPONS and by that we mean your entry can be from any video game but it has to focus on the weapon in some way. It's all up to you whether you'd want something tiny, huge, just the weapon, or whatever. Be creative with this one, I hope to see some cool things outa this. If you do a little thinkin you may remember some games with very...interesting weapons.

If your unfamiliar with FAC then here is a FAQ thing sorta.

FAQ

What is the Fan Art Competition?
The Fan Art Competition is a monthly event where artists create some form of art based on a certain theme.

What is the theme?
The theme is decided by the winner of the previous months competition and must be video game related.

Who can submit art?
Anyone

What are my restrictions?
You are allowed to submit one entry, but other than that there are no restrictions. There are no size, quality, image size restrictions.

Who decides the winner?
OCR of course, the whole community votes on it.

How does voting work?
On the day after the deadline I will make a post that displays all of the art submitted. Then users will be allowed to see every entry and decide which three they like the best, in order. Afterwhich they will send me a PM with their vote and maybe a few comments about the contest. They must do so in the announced voting period. If not then they fail at voting.

When and how do we see the results?
After the voting period is over I will count the results and figure out which peice has the most points. When voting the voter sends in their top three favorite peices. The one they like the most is worth 3 points, the second 2 points and the third 1 point.

If I enter the contest can I vote?
Yes, and voting for yourself is allowed if you REALLY wanna.

Once the points have been counted I will send a happy PM to the winner that tells them that they one and explains how they are to choose the next months theme. *deep breath* Once I get a PM back I will post the results and artists choice for the next months theme.

Rules and Regulations!
1) Any art submitted must be based off of the months theme.
2) No P0rn.
3) Your entry must be created within the month. It cannot have been something you've created in the past or partially finished prior to the announcement of the theme.
4) All entries must be 100% your work. Simply altering something created by someone else may be cool, but is not allowed as an entry.

PM me all entries by:

Clarification needed: Is this the Final Fantasy boss specific weapons or any type of weapon like a sword?

friendlyHunter
07-03-2008, 05:58 AM
Alright, after about 2 seconds of contemplation: I'm doing either Soul Calibur or Metroid. Or Mega Man. Or Pac-man.

... Or Castlevania. Back when the FAC theme was Castlevania, I partially finished a drawing of Death getting hit in the face with a book.... "smacking Death in the face" as it were...

oh dang, those books are SUB-weapons! Better stick to Metroid then.

This is ANY weapon. As in ANY weapon from ANY game. FF Bosses are probably included. The themes from here on out should be much less specific than they were in the past. Most of the themes will probably be open to some very creative interpretation.

That out of the way, I think I'm going to have to think about this one. Something popped into my head immediately when I saw the theme, but I bet everyone else had the same thought. I'll tinker around before I say I'll be in.

Odd question, but
Does cosplay count? I'm working on my Lucca (Chrono Trigger) costume, which has to be done for August, and I plan on making her gun. Seeing as it's conveniently placed with this compo, can I throw some pics up here?

Also, in complete whorage, here are my past two years costumes (Squall from FF8 and Zidane from FF9, complete with weapons). (http://www.acparadise.com/acp/display.php?a=32209)

Ok, this may be oddly placed, but...
Anyone else here use WACOM? If so, do you know how to fix a problem where the tablet just stops working with the PC and the driver says to reinstall the software? I reinstalled and everything but no dice >.< I'm using an Intuos 2 Serial tablet (old school eh?)
I really wanna do something this month too but can't until my WACOM is working... Any help would be awesome.

Honestly I haven't started thinking about it yet. I know what I will do for most of the costume, aside from the boots, and some details on the helmet, but the gun I plan to do last, as it isn't the most essential part of the costume (if nothing else, I will be making the mallet).

I know wood-working, and used plexi-glass last year. I'm probably going to attempt some metal working, but I'm not sure. Aluminum cans, maybe...

Also, long term plan is to make a Gato replica at some point, too...if I have time, again...

I really wanna do something this month too but can't until my WACOM is working... Any help would be awesome.

I own a Wacom Intuos 3, so I can't help too much. The only problem I've had with it that sounds any bit similar is the tablet -- after my computer's been on for a while -- stops recognizing the pressure sensitivity. When that happens, I usually just reset my computer, and everything's back to normal. It's like the drivers timed out or something. Try looking for newer, or updated drivers for your specific model. That's really the only help I can give. I feel your pain!

H. Guderian
07-04-2008, 12:22 PM
I leave my computer on for marathon amounts of time, and that does seem to be the case. I've had some cases with some people where reinstalling the drivers daily for aweek didn't help. Try removing the driver entirely before reinstalling it. Installing it over an old copy may preserve the glitch.

I have at least one good idea for this, but there may be more.

Just keep practicing with it, you'll get used to it with time, I've had a tablet for about 9 months now, and the only thing that's really awkward about it is that I can't rotate the drawing surface like a real piece of paper. (also if you haven't already make sure the tablets sensitive area is set to be proportional to the monitor, that seems to be rather helpful).

I'll try to do something for this one, but it all depends on if the scanner here works or not, I left my tablet at home, somewhere I won't be for another month. I had thought of making a big pixily thing, but then realized the only computer available to me is a mac and it doesn't seem to have anything like msPaint to work with.

Hmm... do you have your tablet set to the "mouse" mode, or "pen" mode? I find it extremely hard to use pen mode (where parts of the pad map 1-to-1 with parts of the screen), it's pretty much impossible for me to get used to. If it's the same problem you're having, set it to Mouse mode and set the Acceleration to zero, then adjust the Mouse Speed to your liking.

As for progress on our entries... I have a funny idea, but I have that feeling everyone else has thought of it already (or, part of it at least). Well, I'm bound to have a lot of fun with this one =D

Also:
Anyone have any tips (physical, software, or otherwise) for making crisp lines of varying thickness? I have a pretty shaky grasp when it comes to drawing soft lines with the stylus... and I'm not quite perfect with a real pen either (I always make at least one mistake that ends up really bugging me :<)...

But those lines, they're drawn with so much tenderness and perfection, round and delicate like the first drops of dew on a September octopus. Seriously, when I first opened it I thought there was water shooting straight at me out of the monitor, but after the initial shock I began to wonder what would compel you to enter such a startling photograph. After realizing that it was in fact a drawing, it took me a week to convince myself that you hadn't stolen original FF6 artwork from the instruction manual, and had in fact drawn it with your own hand, or at least your right foot.

Make the picture huge, then shrink it down as far as crisp lines, this can apply for varying thickness too if you have a pen/tablet that allows for it and the brushes as well.

Can't give you much help on real life drawing though beyond keep practicing, I used to have a really shaky hand, but it isn't as much now, and I haven't done anything specific about it.

I have penciled my first draft, but I think it's far too complex for my ability. I will retrace a part I really like sometime this week, and I will scan it to color it when it is to my liking.

It will still suck, and y'all will know why I am not a graphic artist.

Photoshop's pen tool has a function that can mimic pressure as if you were using a tablet, though I don't ever use it. I just use the straight pen tool with modified brush settings.

You'd be surprised of how small all the images of a regular Cutting Trigger or Flame Saber are INTERNET YOU'VE FAILED ME

i did it the hard way: trace every line all the way around with a pen tool, make selections, then used a brush to fill every line in
I used the pen tool as well, but I chose to use Stroke Path with a 2 - 5 pixel circular brush, and then slap a vector mask on the layer so that I could bend and warp it to my liking if I didn't get satisfied on the first go.

Half of the time went to making my original drawing into a clean, outlined figure, but man was I happy with the end result.

Sindra
07-12-2008, 07:02 PM
I do it similarly. I find the most tedious part though, beyond the inking of outlines, is the putting down of base colors. Seems to take longer than it should. Shading is more fun though, in my opinion. You get to see things begin to flesh out.

Uhh....I thought this was a competition about video games. Ya know, video games that are out. With weapons that have already been devised.

I don't see why, if you're a weapons designer, you can't take a crack at recreating a weapon from a video game.

friendlyHunter
07-14-2008, 04:20 AM
The way I see it, it needs to involve a weapon from a videogame. Though it could also involve a lot of original design. In my opinion, these examples would be acceptable:

- A re-imagination of the Biggoron Sword that looks little like the original, but is recognizable because it's huge and Link is holding it, or he's using it against an enemy from Ocarina of Time.
- An original weapon design (alone), but with certain elements that make it CLEAR that it's from a certain game (e.g. you can tell it's Ivy's sword because it's a freaking whip sword. Or you can tell it's the Master Sword because it has a purple handle with the triforce symbol.)
- A character/unit/creature from the Warcraft universe holding a completely original weapon design.
- A drawing of Samus pointing her smoking arm cannon at a big-ass explosion in the background. (But that's not quite something a weapon designer would want to draw most, is it?)
- A weapon in a place/setting that makes it clear what game it's from.
- A weapon of a certain style that's drawn in an art style that makes it clear what game it's from (e.g. drawn in Okami's style, or Killer 7's style).

Things that I think would NOT be acceptable:

- An original weapon design where you can't tell what game it's from at all (e.g. no clues in the background or on the weapon or anywhere), even if the weapon design was inspired by a certain game.

I haven't started yet, but my entry's gonna be a little less "weapon-y" than most of those things I listed... or rather, a big portion will involve drawing non-weapons.

[Edit]

With what I said there, I should add that you should really have a game in mind when you design/draw your weapon(s).

Hey, I got a question: do special moves that have something to do with a weapon count? like the move makes a weapon?

man, that sucks Atma... If I were a more regular member I would definitely pick it up, but meh...

Um... I thought "by June 27th" meant the dead line was 11:59:59pm June 26th. Maybe its 11:59:59 June 27th.

Ah, I was just going by when last month's contest ended - deadline was June 27, which meant 11:59pm of the 27th.

Actually, with the incredibly efficient (lazy) line-drawing technique I just discovered, I'll probably be finished by tomorrow night!

Send me this method you found? PLEASE!? Line-drawing gg's me.

friendlyHunter

Well, if you've already finished the lineart, it won't help much, but here's what I did:

1) Draw the lines on the paper. (It's ok if there's a lighter drawing underneith it, just make the "final" lines darker). I just used a pencil for this.

2) Scan, adjust contrast.

3) In Photoshop, I added a dark grey Color Dodge layer to remove a lot of the unwanted lighter lines, and a light grey Color Burn layer to darken the wanted lines. Alternatively, you could just fiddle around with the Curves filter.

4) Make a clear layer, and use an incremental/transparent white paintbrush to white-out the remaining unwanted lines. I put this layer underneath the Color Dodge and Color Burn layers, to make the whiting-out look more crisp. I also added and darkened some lines on this layer. If you don't like a change you made, you can use the eraser to undo it!

Depending on how you do it, it still might look a little "sketchy" and unclean... it really depends on the quality/thickness of the lines in your original drawing. Certainly the lines in mine still look like a pencil drawing, but it's a LOT cleaner than my standard FAC fare, which looks like I don't know what an eraser is. I've gotta say, this time the messiness actually fits with the drawing's style and subject matter.

One thing I like about this method is that you can always adjust the line quality on the fly, make all the lines appear thicker/thinner or softer/harder just by tweaking a few things.

Having no access to a scanner, and not even DRAWING anything, count me out this month.

I'd debated on something out of Cave Story, as I've been playing (and getting my ass kicked...) by the Jenka's Nightmare mod for it.

relyanCe
07-27-2008, 12:59 AM
... I'd never thought of using layers to fix the lines... I've always had my parents hide the weapons and put the scan in Levels...
Thanks, that'll really help me out from now on! What I did with this one ( I dunno if I like it ) is use scan in the picture really dark and with high resolution, then use slight Gaussian blur + Smart Sharpen to make it look less pencil-y. We'll see what happens...

If you have a digital camera and a lamp then you should be able to get an ok picture out of any drawing.

I know I only have some hours left, and I haven't drawn anything in... well, since my senior art teacher broke my spirit (but that's another irrelevant story) years ago, but I wanna give it a shot, even if all I can manage is lineart or something.

Seriously guys, this does sound like a lot of fun to me. Just try and throw something together! Trying to make something interesting is better, imo, than putting it off because you don't have the "right conditions" to make it "perfect."

Here's some advice from someone who quit art: if all you care about is making "perfect" pieces or impressing people, then you're sadly misguided. Art is about a freedom of soul and expression. It transcends us... even campy fanart. Artists don't get to decide if they're "good" or what have you... and that's probably for the best.

I think this month will be a lil jokey for me. It's a great idea i've got and someone else will prob do it too but o well.
Mm, I have a few ideas kicking around, but I keep getting a heavy 'Someone else is thinkig of the same thing' vibe.

As for progress on our entries... I have a funny idea, but I have that feeling everyone else has thought of it already (or, part of it at least).

So I'm curious: did anyone end up thinking of anyone else's ideas??

And I already have the perfect idea for next month's theme! ...to suggest to the winner =3

Hoooly smokes I suck - half of my entire two votes was from me =O
Does this mean I shouldn't try so hard, or I should try harder?? I'm thinking the former.
I must find the other person who voted for me and ask for a hug (in a completely non-creepy sense)

Perhaps I just lost votes because I act like an ass in this thread, but I think I'm seeing a trend here... Kirby = win, Teddy Bear = win, Nightmare = lose...

Clearly what draws in the votes is cuteness. I vouch for "cuteness" as the next theme! (My previous theme idea was "irony")

Congrats to Sindra though! I don't think anyone else had a chance =p

Again I must bring up the nature of the voting rules: they're designed to pick a single winner, and leave all other entries in the dust. IMO Sindra's looked both the most polished and the most interesting - given past contest results, it looked like a clear winner to me (no offense to anyone!!). And just look at that terror bear - how can you say "no" to those eyes?? =3
