There is a strong possibility that I will be going Saturday. I have to get travel plans together about visiting my brother, and see how that works out.

May have to change plans based on when the OCR panel is, too. Definately want to attend that!

We talked about this briefly at MAGFest. If you go as Sabin I'll whip up Locke. Jeremy & Jeremy playing chars from the same game. There's got to be some innovation there.

Time is tight, people: only a month to go!

I should talk... I only just remembered to renew my registration before the cutoff date. Unfortunately, it's as far as I got. My plans may be extremely last-minute depending on who's offering shack-up space - hotel or otherwise - who can drive me if there's a need (I can only give you gas, no ass or grass), and my cash flow situation.

Now that the sponsored hotels at OTAKON are all sold out, how's everyone else situated, what are their plans, and who else needs help rooming up? I just remembered to give Don a call.

Anyone remember how some of us had those OCReMix cards trimmed to fit in the rear of the OTAKON badge? Well, I'm silly enough to have my "membership card" design printed out on paper with my name on it this year, also for placing behind the badge. If djp's cool with it, I wouldn't mind doing the same for anyone else who's coming and asks for it. How 'bout it?

I am gonna be going as Spike Spiegel.

First time at Otakon.

I hope your first time is better than mine was last year.

Granted, it was fun and all...but my biggest gripe was the layout of the whole place. I can understand wanting to avoid congestion between limited doorway space, but the way they had things set up I swear was to maximize the amount of time you spent on your feet walking during your day. They spread stuff out so randomly. The AMV contest showing were all the way at the second building about as far away from the main drag as possible. The Artist's Alley and the Dealer's Room - the two most sought-after places in the entire con - were right next to each other layout-wise, but they refused to open the doors between them, and instead you had to go out *ONE EXIT* (since they wouldn't let you go in and come out from the same doors)...walk out, up, around, down, and around some more...and THEN you got to the other room. (no shit...it was almost a 10 minute walk) You could have the most comfortable shoes ever, and you'd still have sore feet after just a few hours of trying to get around.

I honestly hope they changed that this year. Otherwise I'm going to be making fewer trips to the Alley and Dealer's Room.

Oh, they didn't have the escalators on either. What the hell?

There's not much in the way of OTAKON info yet, so any large update can wait. We need to at least see when the OCReMix panel takes place, and then schedule the big Meetup after that. I expect djlionzirkietricks are waiting for that info as well, perhaps then placing it in Announcements. Meantime, we can discuss travel and accomodations. I'll decide myself soon after I talk to several people.

Just so all of you know... Those that went to MAGFest, or heard about JamSpace, or saw videos on YouTube... Dom and I are going to be running "Club Otaku", which is the Otakon equivalent of JamSpace. (Renamed because of a Japanese music guest JAM Project)

Either way, feel free to spread the word. We're going to have the room from 7:00am until 7:00pm on two days, and I believe we're open all day on the last. Come on out and jam away. Feel free to bring instruments, but at your own risk.

A good time will be had by all, whether you want to jam out, or just listen to some live VG tunes.

This also confirms my and Dom's attendance

GREETINGS, Dom here.

Some of you may remember Jamspace from this year's Magfest 6 and how epic it was.

If you're going to be in Baltimore for Otakon (gigantic anime convention, Aug 8-10 2008 ) , I wanted to let everyone here know that WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN:
http://board.otakon.com/index.php?showtopic=15149

The room there isn't called Jamspace there, it's called Club Otaku (there is a band named Jam Project that we wanted to avoid confusion with)

Escariot and I are personally overseeing this one again, so it should be awesome.

Speaking of which... does anybody know if/when the OCR panel is at Otakon?

Hmm...ok, my interests are piqued. What kind of gaming-music do you plan on playing? Direct covers, or remixes? Just curious, as it may determine whether or not I attend.

I'm going to be with a large group staying at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. I expect to be hanging around the Artist Alley and Dealer's Room mainly, with some panel hopping and a visit or two to the Game Room. I'll also hopefully have some art pieces for sale in the art show, so keep an eye out.

Ah I think I should have been more clear. The room isn't hosting any kind of event.

e.g.

The idea behind this room is basically to throw down a bunch of keyboards, guitars, drums, bass, and other stuff on a stage and see what happens. People will sign up for ~10 minute time slots to perform. That room will be open from like 8am to 7pm each day.

So, the type of music that gets played is totally up to whoever is playing it. The room is not actually hosting any events, it's just 24/7 music jam.

Myself, I personally play very liberal covers of vgmusic or medleys or whatever I feel like mixing it with (e.g. Halo Theme into Secret Of Mana into MM3 into Take 5 into Rick Roll). Other people like to play exact versions of game music, other people will kick on a drum machine and looper and make crazy on the fly mixes.

So bottom line is: The room is basically whatever you want to make it into. We're just providing the space and the instruments. If someone wants to bring some crazy synth stuff and do live remixes that sound awesome, it's totally doable. I'll be bringing my humble Yamaha MO8 for just that purpose.

Just to give you an idea of like 'live remix' this was Schnabubula doing some crazy +impromptu stuff live last time: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aFhN1qUSz00 (this one is called Terra's Got Her Groove Back)

You know, as much as I'd like to spend three days in downtown Baltimore among thousands of people inside the mazelike confines of Baltimore Convention Center and the surrounding environs, I simply don't have the cash this year.

That and I'd decided months in advance that I would not be attending this year, so. *shrugs* if you do go, have fun, if you don't, don't feel like you're missing out on that much of a thing, because in retrospect it just isn't as neat as you think it will be.

Here's the official word from the otakon website:

Be a real guitar hero

For the first time at Otakon, we give you... Club Otaku!

We provide a room with musical instruments, and you provide the sheer musical genius. If you're talented at playing a musical instrument and/or singing (or even just really enthusiastic about it), then stop by and sign up for a time slot in which to showcase your mad skills. Or, if you're just a fan of live music from your favorite anime and video games, come by to bask in the awesome glory of it all.
So what is all this, exactly?

Club Otaku is a room with provided instruments (two guitars, one bass guitar, keyboard(s), drums and percussion, microphones) and all associated paraphenalia. Anyone who's interested can sign up to jam together, karaoke-style. Tons of musicians and vocalists, including members of OverClocked ReMix, local videogame music bands, and videogame companies, will be there to rock you all day long.

On Friday and Saturday, Club Otaku will be serving fresh riffs from opening to 7:00PM, and on Sunday all day. Come just once or all three days, but one thing's for certain: you won't want to miss out on this maiden voyage of pure win in music form!
Can I bring my own instrument(s)?

If you fear our cowbell is insufficient for your divine percussive furor, then feel free to bring your own equipment or instruments. However, neither Otakon nor any of its staff members assume any responsibility for any instruments used at Club Otaku. If you'd still like to use your own equipment, you will need to sign a waiver at the room entrance.

This is intended to cover small items like your favorite guitar or bongos. Please don't bring your favorite pipe organ or 147 piece drumset.

I am very excited to hear this. I'll totally be there, and for you old school BEERMIX fans, I just might bring along my kazoo. ;)

I'd get a table, but the competition is too fierce at Otakon, and the table itself is expensive. Hence, I'll be putting some pieces on display in the art show/exhibit, which will be able to be bid on for a chance to win it. I hope to have a few of my current digital pieces enlarged and framed, and I also plan on doing a oil painting on poster board to frame....whose subject material I have yet to decide.

So if you see my Sonic Reflection picture, chances are you'll see the rest.

Much like anything else artist alley is just a giant popularity thing. Ive seen so much awesome work and art just sit on tables yet the crappiest drawings done by some big time deviantart person are sold left and right.

But framing pieces for auction does wonders in selling stuff. Good luck to ya btw :)

Thursday night is entirely possible. Here's the issue: If I do go, I probably won't be able to pick anyone up from stations/airports/whatever on Friday. Thursday maybe. I would be able to give rides to/from the Light Rail near my house because that's how I'll be traveling as well.

So my plans seem to be to traverse down Thursday, pick up pre-reg, with my friends, and then crash at the hotel. We'll be staying at the Hilton Garden Inn about three blocks from the BCC. It's on South President Street. It's pretty nice, a bit expensive, but it's definitely worth it to not have to travel from outside of Baltimore each day, especially with the price of gasoline being so high.

Anyways, I'm definitely planning on going to whatever OCR meet ups are happening, but I do also want to take in a lot more of the convention this year. So anyone that would like to hang at the convention with me is more than welcome to. Sure beats walking around by myself at any rate.

If anyone wants to get together on Thursday night, at least, anyone that's already going to be in Baltimore Thursday night, feel free to PM or AIM me. I should have net access at Baltimore from the hotel.

So that's it... Only two weeks from tomorrow! GET EXCITED PEOPLE!

Really hoping I get my Lucca cosplay done this week for Connecticon. Having major trouble with the boots and helmet, and haven't even started thinking about the weapon. Oy.

I will definately be there all day Saturday, but I might go either Sunday or Friday night. I plan to drive from CT to my brothers house (just outside D.C) Friday morning, so, depending on how pooped I am from the drive, as well as what events are on Friday, I'll see when I'm going.

Wow, I really should get in the habit of posting more often here.

I'm going to be at Otakon. Now that I know when the panel will be (thanks for not another Friday morning panel...), I can definitely make it.

Hope to see y'all there.

Also (I offered this same advice last year), if you're going to be driving in each day like me, the best parking I've found is a garage about two blocks north of the BCC. If you're coming in from I-395, continue up S Howard for two blocks and turn right on W Baltimore. Garage is immediately on your left.

I'll be driving up from Arlington. It's close so there's likely not many folks needing to carpool from there, but I'm up for giving lifts if anyone on the way needs it. KF

I was waiting to finalize things with Jose and Pezman before announcing anything but I was actually planning on cooking out at least twice, either Thursday or Friday evening and then again Sunday afternoon. I know people need to leave town and all, and I'm not sure if there's anything going on at the con on Sunday that people want to go to, but I'd prefer to have it start as early as possible (maybe as early as 11) so the people who need to leave can still stop by for a little. That and a one-hour BBQ just isn't much.

Okay here it is because people are interested:

BBQ Details

There will be one Friday night and one Sunday afternoon.

Friday's will start around 8 or whenever people show up. This is mainly for people who have to leave before or early on Sunday, but anyone can come if they want.

Sunday's will flare up at 11am, and run all afternoon. This will probably be the bigger one.

For each I'm going to have to limit attendance to 15 people. My yard is large but not quite that large.

I'm half a mile from the Timonium Light Rail station, it's a decent walk and I can also ferry people to/from the station. I think the trains run until about Midnight on Friday so keep that in mind if you have to get back to a hotel/whatever, as my place is already full. Please try to coordinate in groups so that I don't have to make 600 trips back and forth.

Please bring $5 cash to help pay for the massive amount of food/drink I'll be purchasing for this. It will be the cheapest non-ramen meal of the whole weekend.

If interested in attending either or both, post here and I'll start a list.

There should still be hotels/motels available along I-95 between BWI and Baltimore itself. Anything along that way isn't going to be more than a 20 minute drive (except during rush hour) to get to the BCC.

Of course, driving up there from where I live just takes an hour. I recommend doing that if you're less than 90 minutes away and don't plan on going to any really late-night events (midnight or later). Otherwise, like you said, a hotel room simply isn't worth it.

I gave a recommendation in my last post for a garage. Last I recall, they charge $10 a day. KF

I might have to up the BBQ charge to $6 or $7 if we don't get more signups. Also if anyone has any requests, let me know. Currently the planned Sunday menu is:

-Burgers & dogs
-Wings (just got the technique down tonight)
-Chicken Tenders/Breasts (depends on availability)
-Some variation on the tenderloin cheesesteak I posted above
-(?)
-Potato salad, cole slaw, etc.
-Chips
-Sodas, Tea, Water
-Beer (accepting requests here as well, bring $2 extra if drinking)

I wanted to do ribs as well but it's just too much work. If I can find a decent pork shoulder/roast I may slow cook that on the side.

There may be cake.

Friday's menu is going to be a limited subset of Sunday's, although I may prepare some foods on Friday and simply heat them up on Sunday.

Okay since everyone's asking:

1) If you're coming by Light Rail get off at the Timonium stop and call me. I can pick you up or you could walk, it's about 3/4 mile although it's not really pedestrian friendly.

2) If you're coming by car, make your way to I-83 and get off on Timonium Road East. It's exit 16 or 18 or 21 or something like that, the first one north of the Beltway (695). Go through three lights and then make the first right after the citgo station. My address is below.

3) Friday's starts around 8pm and runs until whenever it breaks up. Light Rail stops around midnight on Fridays so if you need that to get back, you should probably get to the station by 11. I'm not entirely sure on the train times since I haven't used them in years, so check the schedules.

4) Sunday's starts at 11am and will run all afternoon. I can't be ferrying people back and forth during the event but I should have a friend who can help with that, basically between 12-3 I'll probably send someone else to the station. Noob will be signing autographs at 1:15 and there will be a photo session afterwards.

5) Bring $5 for each event if not drinking, $7 if you are.

6) Come hungry. I'm doing the shopping this evening and will be buying a lot of food. Please don't bring food, I'll have plenty.

Phone: 410-561-8336x5 (home) - Call this if it's during the day Friday or Saturday. Please hang up and call my cell if there's no answer within 5 rings.
410-905-0165 (cell) - If no answer at home, or during either event. If I don't already have it (and if you have to ask, I probably don't) PM me your numbers so I know who's calling me.

Address:
35 Edgemoor Road
Timonium, MD 21093

there probably won't be cake at this point

I'm here at Otakon, well, presently in the hotel room at the Hilton. Let me tell you, this is quite awesome. We are no more than 3 blocks from the BCC. Other than the slight rain shower (read: half hour long pour), things went well.

The pre-registration was awesome, in and out in under an hour, and the line was wrapped around the building just about rounding a third corner. Not bad. I can't wait for tomorrow, there's a showing of the Live Action Death Note at 6:00pm in the HD Theater. So I'm looking forward to that. -The Friday-night rave. Anime unts, dance circles of all types and the biggest game of duck-duck-goose I've ever seen.
-The Ghostbuster cosplayer Rick-Rolling a crowd in the dealers' room and still getting love for it
-The Phoenix Wright series cosplayers' mass photo-orgy after their mock-trial. Fan-on-fan love...
-Escariot and Dom's drum-and-keyboard dance medley this afternoon at Club Otaku.
-"OCR-Ball" at Xerol's BBQ (really guys, we need to make that a tradition) and just having time to shoot the breeze with all (or most) of you again.

That was officially the worst display of bus service I've ever seen. One so-called meal (several bags of chips and Burger King fries shared with another passenger) and I'm home, ten hours after leaving the BBQ. Still deciding if I'm crazy enough to head to work in three hours.

Edit

Alright, I think from now on we should label any kind of BBQing that we do as a group an OCRBQ. It just sounds cool, and it makes sense, at least to me! :)

So I read earlier that you were in the Artist's Alley, but I didn't see you (Granted, I don't know what you look like, and I didn't ask every AA dealer if they were "Sindra" on the OCR forums).

Heh, yeah sorry. I was participating in the Art Show rather than having an actual table this year. Tables get mad expensive at Otakon, and I'm not up to that caliber yet. Perhaps next year. Sorry for the confusion.

On a happy note, my Sonic Reflection poster piece went for higher than I thought, and someone bought my Wesker print for $30. I was pleased.

Haha, OCRHug...

Jill and I had a REALLY great time at Otakon and the BBQ. To be honest, though it can be fun to do huge meetup groups, I think not having them this year was less stressful. Anyone that was at last year's Otakon (CPK nightmare), MAG 6 (TGI Friday's) or the La Tasca dinner in.. '06 (I think) will agree with me that eating in huge groups kind of sucks. Plus, you often have to wait for people to show up and ultimately you end up spending 4 hours from start to finish just eating one meal. Doing things in smaller groups worked out well this time.

I'm also very glad that the panel went well. I think it was our best panel ever, personally, and the crowd seemed to be really into the whole way. Jill, José and I worked our butts off on preparing content for the entire week prior to Saturday so it was as relief to see that all paying off.

Feel free to leave comments about the panel here, too! We're always looking to improve.

That was a lot of fun. The panel was awesome of course, and I only wish there was more time. (Though, yeah, speakers could've been turned down a tad.)

And I'm definitely glad I came to the BBQ. Thanks Xerol a ton for having us over. Also, Pixietricks, thanks for convincing me to change my mind {^^} (I was about not to go and sort of last-minuted the decision). And of course, zircon, pixietricks, DragonAvenger, Q-Pa, Xerol, Dyne, Jose, Pezman, DrumUltima, it was great being able to meet up with y'all (...I'm forgetting someone I think.......).

Yeah, leaving it poolside would've tempted fate. I think it would've ended up being 20 minutes of good footage on a shorted-out camera.

I'll post up some photos and more comments a little later. I ended up having to work on some stuff for 12 hours today (when I was anticipating, like, 4 hours) and so I'm more exhausted now than I was just after the convention.

I will add that OCRBall should be a staple of any meetup. KF

Less talking, more music.

I guess by that time in the convention I was just really hoping to sit down and listen to a bunch of good remixed pieces and get into a fit of nostolgia. I got really pissed off at the idiot girls running the Sonic panel who did nothing but talk the whole damn time, and wouldn't go into anything about the music or gameplay of the series. (but talked in excess about how gay they were for Rouge)

Guess I'm a "actions speak louder than words" person when it comes to these things. That's me though.

When they said it was their first panel, they weren't kidding. They didn't even have a damn powerpoint. Someone asked about the music, and their response boiled down to "Yeah, it's awesome. Let's talk about how hot Rouge is again!" They spent zero time to talk about the cartoons or the comic book, with annoyed me, too. Interestingly enough, I did win a prize in that panel's trivia contest. I was the guy who was dressed as Mario with a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses that nobody else got.

But hey, did anyone go to the "Your Favorite Video Game Character Sucks" panel? I thought those two guys were really funny.

Sorry! Whenever I try to remember everyone in a group I always forget someone... It wasn't intentional!

Anyway, yeah, OCR-Ball is great. The game was basically (paraphrasing):

Xerol: If it hits the shed, it's out
Pezman: Playing with a Pepsi in one hand is worth 50 points
Kizyr: Hitting the camera is out
Pixietricks: If everyone on the team hits the ball, you win 20 games
Dyne: If it hits zircon, it's out
DrumUltima: Hitting Jill in the face wins 150 games
Pixietricks:

Also, running into zircon & pixietricks in the Dealers' Room:

Me: You mind if I get a picture of the three of us?
P/Z: Sure!
(...)
Z: I think Dale was behind us
P: Did he put bunny-ears on us? ...check the picture
Dale: No no, there's no need to--

Me: Dammit, Dale!!

Nah, I kid. I kid.

I don't remember if it was before or after that, but they also tried to defend Big The Cat's levels in SA. Then there was a lame trivia contest, and that was it. For my first panel of the con, and especially for a series that I'm a huge fan of, it was a big letdown.

What wasn't a letdown, though, was the medley video. Thanks for posting it, Jose!

I knew I should have gone up there and thrown their punk asses out of their chairs and done the rest of the panel myself. I had a bad feeling about things when the loudmouth girl dressed like a pink witch went from directing people to sitting down at the head table.

Did anyone happen to get a video of the remixing session. I was in the masquerade (which sucked that the masquerade was the same time as the panel) and rushed down two blocks and up the escalators to get to the panels. When i got there, a minute and some time passed and i caught the end of it. Then i got to hear the judges opinion on the remix (which needed more cowbell) lol. But the rest of the panel was great (good job on staying alive btw). And i was just hoping someone got footage of that, so i can learn more about remixing.

Sindra

Don't worry. They basically had everything pre-recorded and set up, so it was all drag-n-drop into place. There wasn't really much to learn about remixing other than what sounds better to you.

Haha, yeah, I wasn't really able to approach the topic in any appreciable depth, given 15 minutes. Plus, my laptop isn't very powerful and it's tough to do anything with a touchpad. However, the overall concept was still there - building an (abbreviated) arrangement, layering parts, making choices that come up in the course of "rea" ReMixing.

Sweet team there. Except for Dave. He has ruined everything! :P

Jill sounds...very different. I thought about her at first, but then thought the vocals sounded way too different, you know. I'm guessing the reason why is that she adapted her voice well with the track...I mean, it's not like she's going to go Opera-crazy with a chill track as this. Plus, it's live. Everyone sounds different live. lol. All in all, nice job, everyone. I'm just quite surprised (in a positive way, of course) by how Jill handled the vocals. Sweet. :)

Someone yelled out after the performance that the song was too close to the original, and they're pretty much right. We didn't have the time to do anything really fancy with it. If this ever got subbed (can you believe we don't have a "Still Alive" remix on this site?), it'd have to get overhauled.

Yeah...good point. Considering the time constraints, I understand why it sounds too close to the original. But, yeah, would be cool if you guys found the time to overhaul this. It'll be a bit tough since the original is so damn catchy...but it can be done.

Yeah, I was trying to adapt my voice to the track to sound more computer-y. Somehow, I don't think vibrato would have fit the mood. I'm glad you felt that it worked! We just covered the song, but it could be fun to put together an actual remix sometime.

Sindra: The "Making of a Remix" tutorial was a game designed to get the audience involved, not so much to actually teach them how to remix. Something like that would have required at least the entire hour and a half, and most people probably would not have found it appealing or beneficial. If you're looking for real help in that area, I would check out some of zircon's audio and video tutorials.

I think what was done was fine. A lot of people don't understand the structure of songs, which is a big first step in learning how to mix. Seeing it broken down like that was a good start for the people who now nothing about it. No one should expect that they can come out of the panal knowing how to make anything, honestly, but seeing the structure gives them an idea of how things work on a basic level.

Perhaps coupling that with one example of how to create a small section (one of the A or B choices, or even like a 2 bar repeating pattern in a song) would make things a little more in depth, but not take up too much more time. Going further than that would get too complicated and probably would lose audience interest.

I wasn't saying it for my benefit...just because someone else asked about it, and I told them it wasn't really something that talked about remixing, so it's ok he missed out on it since it didn't have much to do with actual remixing.

Yeah, personally I liked the game. It's like DragonAvenger said, it's a good way to show the song breakdown and the extremely basic assembly of parts into a finished remix. And really, that gave me a better idea of how a lot of remixes are constructed. It does give some basic understanding, and I actually found it pretty informative considering I really didn't have the slightest clue how everything was tied together.
