View Full Version : Avatar: The Last Airbender Finale
Hey, I was wondering if anyone else out there likes this series. They're airing a two hour long movie event tonight on Nick, and all this week, they've been showing premiere episodes leading up to it.
At first when I started watching this, I thought it was just a lame attempt of Nickelodeon to get in on the anime wannabe scene. But once I got into it, I really found an appreciation for the characters, the world, and the story. I think it has great action which is definitely a crowd pleaser, a great storyline which is very captivating, and even some comedic fluff which is *gasp* actually funny!
So if anyone hasn't been up to date, I might recommend looking at some episode overviews of the past week, and the movie tonight which is on Nickelodeon at 8:00 Eastern time. It's called "Sozin's Comet" I believe...Need I say more?

Ditto. I was all "No, not another shitty anime wannabe..." but then I was all "ok, one week until the next episode, I can wait, I can wait..."
I think this works better than most of the faux-anime shows because it don't really try to be anime, or at least, not for the sake of it.
Take those god-awful show Team Galaxy, Totally Spies! and Martin Mysteries (all done by the same people, by the way... you can just tell from watching it for even a minute); they could have went with original art and styles, but they obviously tried to hook the anime-watching crowd. They don't fit. It doesn't work.
Avatar, on the other hand, seems to be more interested in telling the story than showing off how much it looks like anime. I have watch the three above mentioned shows, and I can not stand them. But even though Avatar is aimed at the same age group, it comes off far better written. Maybe it the plot. Maybe it's because the characters actually evolve and grow with each season. Maybe it's because they just have better writers, period. Either way, it's a far more enjoyable show.
I've been waiting for three months for the new episodes to come out. It's about time, and I will be hitting up the torrents tonight to see if anyone has them out already.
The only thing I'm worried about is the movie; it's supposed to be directed by... M. Night Shyamalan. I swear to god, if there's one of his fucking stupid "twists" in it, I'm quitting television shows for good.

I will say that I will be watching it.
It's surprisingly mature for being on Nick, whose kiddie nature tends to make you cringe at the idea of actually liking one of their shows. Avatar actually grew on me as it went on, and became more involved and the characters became more interesting. (there's a lot of characters to focus on too, which is nice)
The animation for the fight scenes is some of the best I've seen in a while. It's very fluid, which usually you don't see as often, or when you do it astounds you because you're not used to seeing it.

Well I definitely enjoy the series as well. I think as far as the movie goes, there was talks of doing one for the theaters, but I don't know if they're still gonna do that since the movie is coming on tonight.
We'll have to see how things go with this.

Well, they aren't actually movies. They are the last episodes of the series, shown together.

You're probably right about that. They showed "The Boiling Rock" as a 1 hour event on Tuesday, even though it's a 40 minute two part episode.
Anyway, I don't think this movie was directed by Shyamalon. I heard he wanted to do a live action movie. Anyway, time for watching. It's starting just as I'm typing this!

That was a good series.
Nice way of ending it.
That was so epic. I won't include any spoilers, but I'd like to confirm that this is in fact the end of the story, and it was amazing. It was better than I ever could've imagined it would be.
Now that that's settled, I have this to say: If anyone has never seen Avatar or gotten into it, give it a chance from episode 1. You may be very pleasantly surprised.

I watched it tonight as well and it was really amazing, great ending to a great story. I had watched the series when it first came out but by the end of Book 1 I didn't have time available to watch any of the other episodes after that (or any TV at all for that matter). I would usually catch it on TV by mistake just by flipping through the channels and I would be like, "Holy shit, I am so glad I decided to watch TV tonight."
I'm going to assume that the whole series will be on DVD by this Christmas and I will definitely be looking forward to its release.
I work for Best Buy so I'll definitely be hiding one in the back for myself when the time comes.. :<

I must say that the humor in this show is actually pretty good and not really a "kids" show. Idk when I last saw a kids show make fun of the fact that one of the main characters is blind.

Finished watching it about an hour and a half ago. There were some pretty memorable moments in the movie, even some times I HOPED people would have died because you know, in my eyes death makes everything better haha. But yeah, for all of those that haven't watched, I'll leave my comments in my head. I'm sad the series is over though, it was one of THE BEST western cartoons to ever grace TV. Seriously.

Awesome animation and story telling throughout the entire series. Those last fights scenes were amazing. I'm hoping tho the dvds will have extended scenes since I felt some were cut off too soon like Zuko and his father's little talk at the end.
Overall the series is a masterpiece for me and I really hope they don't continue the series. They probably do have another avatar series planned (If nick is still wants to keep it ) but with that ending It should just be left alone. There are too many series and stories that keep running that eventually ruins itself and Avatar should not be one of them.

So in the end, I agree with you and they ended the series at a great point and if they did continue it, I think it would probably end up dragging on...... but I was hoping that Katara and Azula would have had a real knock down drag-out cat fight with Katara doing some Blood-bending to finish it off.

Hey, the way she took her out was kinda badass to me, and by that I mean it wasn't expected. Something with the water down there, but yeah, didn't know exactly what she had planned.
But yeah, a couple questions left unanswered such as what happened to Azula afterwards, and what DID happen to Azula/Zuko's mother?

I don't watch cartoons that much anymore. I've spent most of my time in that area wondering how a given show stayed on, as they always seem to be trying to copy one another. Something always feels like a Pokémon knock-off, or the typical "kids with attitude" garbage, or it was just flat out dull, insipid and boring. The last cartoon to really get my attention was Teen Titans, which ended a couple years ago with a really disappointing fifth season (it should have ended with the "The End" trilogy). I started watching it around the end of the third season, and I got interested in it by the time the fourth season started. It's a bit like that with Avatar... only even later.
I caught one episode of it months ago... the one where Aang and Katara were in a cave during a big rain storm. Seemed alright, but it didn't grab me, as the Nickelodeon label made me think it was just going to be another silly kids cartoon. Then last week, I heard about the big marathon being aired, ending with the series finale movie. So, I decided to sit down and watch it on Monday. I've now seen nearly every episode (in order), and I have to say, I'm sorry I missed out on this show when it was still airing new episodes regularly.
As has been mentioned, the animation quality is good throughout most of each episode, and it was a nice change to see something that had a story arc running through everything. The characters grew up and closer, various people died and got injuries that lasted, and it walked regularly on both sides of the serious/silly line to good effect. It even gave me a good laugh at times, and surprised me a little at the more "grown up" aspects that were used within its rating (kissing, characters dying, etc.). I liked how it also dug into Chinese art and history, as well as bits of other cultures for its settings and look. The people behind the show obviously did their homework, and the end result was a world that felt more fleshed out than your typical American cartoon, and fight scenes that were unexpectedly well choreographed and handled. And yes, the music is quite good.
The characters, though a bit cliché in some ways, were good. The motherly "big sister" (Katara), the silly guy (Sokka), the sarcastic little tomboy girl (Toph), to over-angry bully (Zuko)... we've all seen them before. But it still added up to enjoyable characters and interactions, thanks to the writers making them grow little by little through conflicts (both without and within).
As for the ending, yeah, it was a big finalé. Shit blowing up everywhere, many characters returning, big climactic battles... everything you'd expect from a story that's meant to tie up most of the lose ends that have been dangling for a while. Thankfully, the ending didn't feel rushed, or drawn out. Everything got equal time, while keeping things focused. It was a good way to bring it all to a close, and unlike a lot of finalés I could name, I didn't feel disappointed by it. And yeah, it was certainly afflicted a bit with the "happy ending" syndrome on several fronts. But considering it is supposed to be a kids show, that isn't a surprise. **SPOILER** To balance out the rather dark ending for Azula, it seemed fitting to have Katara/Aang, Sokka/Suki, Zuko/Mai fully hook up in the end (though it was pretty much a given they would as the series went on). **SPOILER**
So there you have it. My thoughts as someone who has been watching this show for all of a week basically. I feel lucky that I was able to catch it when I did, before the possibility of what happened to Teen Titans came to pass (i.e. yanked off the air entirely within a few weeks). I now find myself wondering what the show's creators are going to do for their next project in the Avatar universe, and what the live action movies will be like under M. Night Shyamalan's command.
All in all, a good watch. Shame I waited until it was over to really notice that.
Now for a question... why are the three seasons of this show being sold for $50 each? Teen Titans is $14.99 each on Amazon for thirteen episode seasons. I don't think the extra seven shows in Avatar's season adds up to an extra $35. Plus, why six DVDs for twenty twenty-three minute shows? What's eating all that disc space?

I was quite happy that there wasn't a huge fight with Azula and Katara. We already saw the two fight against each other in the second season finale and with the blood bending you got one last glimpse of it in the previous episode with her mother's killer. The trick Katara used on Azula was pretty bad ass and was right up her alley. If Katara used Blood bending then she wouldn't have been herself and not fitting for her character IMO.

Damn right. Making a show that had war, suffering, emotional outbursts, love, hate, death, destruction and character development is mostly likely never going to happen on that channel again.
With any luck, they will see how successful this turned out and instead of being afraid of taking a chance, they will actively pursue shows with more mature content.
Oh, and having finally found the torrent this morning, I watched the finale:
-Metal Fighter Miku... I mean Toph was awesome, but they didn't show enough of her.
-Avatar mode on was pretty epic.
-I saw the whole "taking away his fire-bending" thing back in the second season. It was pretty much the only way to really go.
-I'm glad they finally resolved most of the romance issues, but what about Toph? Again, needs more Toph.
-They left a few things open, namely where Zuko's mother is and what they did with Azula.
Hopefully they won't sully the ending with a tacked-on direct-to-DVD epilogue or movie. I may want more of the show but it's best to end on a high note then try to darw it out any more.
Awesome series, I'm sort of sad it's over now, but at least we got something that was actually good from a network know for crappy shows.

I totally agree, especially about Nick making crappy shows...This has been the best thing they've come up with in years, but I was almost expecting there to be some episodes afterward about traveling around the world kicking the fire nation out of different places, and restoring balance in a slow process of events. I was impressed overall though.
I would hope that Nick decides to keep the crew they put together for Avatar for a new future project, if they plan anything.
By the way, found this on IMDB:
Will there be a book 4? No. The creators confirmed that at San Diego Comic Con in July, 2007. Other stories will be told in the Avatar world and there are the upcoming live-action movies, but the animated series ends with Book 3: Fire. Nickelodeon has announced that there will be "(t)hree original 60-minute animated Avatar movies," in addition to the live-action, feature-length film trilogy by M. Night Shyamalan.
I'm actually relieved that they're not planning a sequel, as I think this series is great the way it ended. Also, If they're planning on three original movies, they're probably related to the story in some way, like filler movies on unseen events in the series:

Haha, that was great.
I loved this show, and thought that was an amazing way to end it. A little sad it's over, but honestly glad the great story came to such an epic close. That was pretty much all I could have hoped for in the finale.
Incidentally...spoiler I thought it was very interesting to finally hear that the comet was used to destroy the air nomads 100 years prior. Makes sense, given all the advantages the air nomads would have otherwise had against an attack. Also gives extra meaning to the scene where they found Giatso's body surrounded by Fire Nation soldiers back in first season. /spoiler
Also, very interested to hear about the shorter animated movies. While I think it would be cool to stay within the same story and go deeper into certain parts (perhaps Iroh's journey into the spirit world), I also think it would be cool to make them center around previous Avatar incarnations. I also think it would be great if they were to put together a new series that would be based within the same world but, again, based around a past or future incarnation. Expecting these new animated movie projects to be within this same story, but I can hope for future projects. A bit iffy about the live-action film adaptation despite the creators' heavy involvement, simply because things are always lost in translation to a different medium.

I think Nick had a bunch of great shows when it first started. It's just that the last 7 years or so had a dearth of any good ones unless you can count in Spongebob for being the irreverent comedy cartoon they always seems to have.
I think the success of Avatar could almost force them to make others with a definite story. Avatar's ending was good but almost felt too Naruto-ish with a lot of its fighting elements. Hopefully the next project won't feel too much like another anime.

How did it feel Naruto-ish?
Was it the giant fight scene between Ang and the Fire Lord? I can see some similarities, but only if you compare it directly to the big fight between Naruto and Sasuke that took place at the end of the first part (when Sasuke left to join Orichimaru).
At least Avatar didn't have every secondary character do a ten minute long flashback narrative about why they decide to fight, and then have the battle span over five episodes, just to meet their quota for episodes.
Naruto is really bad for that. Almost as bad a Dragonball Z.

I agree. Naruto tends to drag things quite a bit, but that's not the similarity I'm seeing. The similarity is in the elemental fighting and the way Aang and crew goes from one elemental nation to the next. That is basically what Naruto boils down to in its storytelling. Badguys come, Fire Nation ninjas (Konoha) goes out to other elemental nations and fight elemental-attacking-ninjas. Obviously, technically both series are very different. But just about every anime boards out there seems to compare Avatar to Naruto and for the right reasons IMO. I really don't think Avatar should be bashed even if they based some basic ideas off of Naruto because they got around to all the important fights and storytelling in only three seasons. Though I wish there were more of it since there seems to be a lot of loose ends and some lost opportunities with some characters. Maybe a sequel should be in order.

You're comparing shows based upon how they use the same standard clichés and genres (magical element control fighting). Of course you're going to see similarities.
There are enough shows out there now and over the last few years that we're going to see similarities no matter what. Anime is hardly the poster boy for originality, and ninja/martial arts and magic is hardly a sparse genre. With just the beaten-to-death "fated warrior is the main character" bit, you've got pretty much every show that came out in the last thirty years.

Thus it all boils down to presentation of the plot, how it tells it while keeping things balanced enough to (a) keep viewers entertained & (b) making the viewers want more; all the while not ruining the pace, plot as well as providing a proper closure, even leaving some loose ends is fine..

I will agree with injin in that there some questions left alone I'd like to have answered, and yet I feel thats the beauty of leaving it up to the viewers to dwell upon if they choose to.
In fact one can surmise the possibility of say... Azula some how breaking out and wanting revenge on the entire world. Go all Kefka-like in where she gains trust of a powerful leader only to take over and some how become a god. Not through war but through deception and blitzkrieging defense that would probably still be in a slow reconstruction due to the recent coming of great peace. She's already, based on my views, passed the deep end and beyond. With a focused madness, who can say what may come...?
This is just one of many possibilities that a viewer can create and simply play with it. To provide answers just takes away the fun of making up possibilities...

Simply beautiful. I am pleased to see it end with dignity and a reasonable degree of closure.
That said, I really don't want to see any sort of miniseries or movie spinoff, simply because it will lack the drive and vision that made Avatar unique, compelling, and capable of holding its own in a sea of mediocrity. The only reason I say this is because I suspect that the series was given the axe some time ago to allocate more money to slapstick shows geared toward the network's target audience. The only reason a spinoff would even be considered would be to cash in on the franchise with as little investment as possible, resulting in what I like to call a "Disney-derivative marketing bitch".
I'd rather Avatar end with its dignity intact than suffer that abuse. And for now, I can live that dream.
Well done.

I'm not being that vague here. I just get the feeling that they're similar and a lot of discussions in anime forums have the same opinion. Just yelling "IT'S NUTHIN LIKE NAROOTO" isn't going to make me magically think they aren't similar. And did I say anything out of the line? Because I said their overall premise is very similar. Not in how the story specifically plays out or the exact technicality of the worlds.
Also, why the hell does this kind of discussion boil down to hating Naruto all of a sudden? I like both Avatar and Naruto. No discussion there.
No mention of the live action movie trilogy?
I'm quite content with the series as is, and honestly, not really anticipating it that much. I'll probably see it, but for now, I'm still wholly satisfied with how the series ended.

That series was friggin awesome. Personally, I'm happy to see the series has come to a close. Some shows just seem to go on forever and many of em get old and crappy so although it's sad to see Avatar end, it's good that it went out on a high. I wouldn't mind seeing an episode in the future that catches up with the characters down the track though. Oh, and Sokka should've added a rainbow.

I didn't day anything about hating Naruto. I didn't say it wasn't at all like Naruto. I didn't say that they weren't silimar. I didn't say anything about you being out of line.
I honestly don't see anything that made it sound that way.
I like Naruto too. I just don't see the connections between the two shows like you do.

I really liked this show, but I could never get on the TV long enough to watch more than broken, out of order episodes. And I really dont want to pay for the DVDs... and I hate youtube... can somebody maybe help me out?

Officially, no. You're either going to have to find someone that has it and will lend it to you, or you will have to download it, which we can't help you with on the very public forums.

Well yes, because Nickelodeon gives the episodes out for free. It's legit, or atleast that's what I thought, once the episodes had aired on tv.
If this is confirmed, I'll gladly provide you with a link

If it's from the Nickelodeon website, you're in the clear to post a link. If it's from a 3rd party (torrent, etc), not so much. They're not waiving their rights to the IP at any rate, even if they have full episodes viewable from their site.

You guys arent very savvy, are you. When somebody puts out a hint, usually he gets PMed with help/people telling him not to do this on a public forum.

I would normally say "Google, motherfucker! Do you use it?" but I've been informed that no one realizes that I'm paraphrasing Pulp Fiction when I do so.
Also, if someone doesn't know that they can go to any search engine and look it up themselves, then they are either lazy or stupid. I don't think anyone here is stupid, so that leaves lazy. I'm not helping someone who is too lazy to spend the five seconds to find it themselves.

haha yes. You know I used to get flustered when people ganged up on me on forums but now ive gotten used to it.
SO. Avatar, finale, probably going to be a flashback episode. And here you can see that I have definitely not read all the posts but I was off reading other things like say novels that were actually fun.

In other words you got all flustered on the internet forums and did something else.
Brickbuster90 did offer ya a good option though :)!!
As for the series... I some how see it as a sign that hollywood had been eyeing the animated scene for a good while... (no shit eh?)
Heard there's suppose to be a Transformers sequel, there are already threads about the Cowboy Bebop live action as well as the DB movie; not to mention the Avatar live action movie mentioned here.
Next thing you know, One-Piece live action versus Pirates of the Carribean threads will be all the rage some day. D:

I'd never watched Avatar up to now, but I watched most of the movie, and fucking loved it.
Soundtrack was brilliant.
You know, you totally ruin the entire series for yourself if you do that.
I have mixed feelings about the series ending. On one hand, it was a bitchin' way to end the series, on the other... I want more Avatar, and not the shitty Live Action movie that's supposedly coming out. From where the story ended, I can't imagine that there is any way to pull even one more book out of it...
I haven't seen the last few episodes or the ending movie stuff, but Avatar is likely one of those things that was meant to end the way it did and never have any continuation or sequel. If anything, the creators could either spawn a similar series off of Avatar or go a few hundred years into the future again with a new problem. Or, just never touch it again. I dunno...
I absolutely loved every episode of Avatar. It was just a refreshingly unique thing that always pulled me in.

I don't necessarily want them to continue it as it has been left off now, it's just that I absolutely fell in love with the storyline, the animation style, the concept behind the bending arts, the true martial arts upon which the bending styles are based, the creativity of the entire series, and the attitudes of each of the nations... I dunno... I REALLY like it... I'm happy how it ended, I just want more.

Not necessarily. There were two loose ends that haven't been tied up as of yet & I think they did that on purpose to leave it open for maybe a couple of extra eps.
I maybe sort of would like to see those said events portrayed in a new couple of episodes. Some questions left unanswered...the only thing I really don't want to see, honestly, is a sequel.
However, one thing which may be interesting to see would be stories of the past, such as Avatar Kioshi and the conquerer who was trying to form an empire.

There's going to be an Avatar MMO (http://kotaku.com/5029183/nickelodeon-rolls-out-avatar-mmo).
Might be interesting... but everyone will be all "why can't I be the Avatar!?(%" and shit.
But having a group raid or something with each element could be sort of fun... it all depends upon how they plan to make the powers interact with each other and the environment.

It says in the article that it would be a prequel...so it might be during Avatar Roku's time? Or maybe while Aang was frozen. This could be interesting. It sounds like it mostly focuses on pvp and character development at the moment, but I'm sure they will have more content than that planned.

The animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, has inspired M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender”, a live-action epic adventure from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies which will debut in domestic theaters July 2010. Series’ creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will serve as executive producers on the film.
If Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be exec producers for the movie, then it might be more promising that people give it credit for.
