As promised, here's a youtube tutorial I just finished explaining how I got autotune working in TF2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJggMxXS428
It hasn't finished processing at the time of this post, but that's where it will be.
Everything sounds better with autotune =D

That's the idea, really. Given the choice between playing with people I know and playing a full game, I'll take the former every time.
Personally, I prefer full games, or at least nearly full. If it drops below 12 people, chances are I'll drop out too (or just not join to begin with).
Certain people with bandwidth issues excluded, if someone can't be bothered to download the map (incidentally, even letting them do so is a courtesy)
I mirror the maps from my website (tf2.vgmusic.com) as a courtesy to make it a faster download than it would be from the server, as the server limits its transmissions to players to its maxrate settings.
, then they aren't here for the community; they just want to play the game. There are plenty of other servers out there who can fill that need. I'm aware it'll hurt overall turnout; I just disagree with the idea that that's bad.
We run a public server. Our current host cuts the price in half if you run a private server (with a password 24/7). We don't because we don't have enough regulars to have a proper game except at peak times.
In other news, there's a prefab map (http://www.fpsbanana.com/prefabs/3527) for making a tug-of-war cart map like pl_waste.
Also, as I tried to point out to someone before, the version of pl_waste (http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/78364) we run is marked as final, not beta. Incidentally, the author apparently never heard of bspzip (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Using_Bspzip_to_Embed_Custom_Content) or pakrat (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Pakrat) to add the custom intro video to the bsp file itself. As a general rule, custom maps should have any required custom content in the .bsp file, as that's all a server is going to transmit.

What is a "proper game"? 12 on 12?
Again, I would disagree with that. It's how Valve designed the game, but their intentions only go as far as you let them.
Diff'rent strokes, etc etc. Hopefully some news on that colo'ing project comes through soon; a second server would alleviate the problem entirely.

Again, I would disagree with that.
just because you enjoy playing 3 vs 3 sandvich only 2fort matches doesn't meant that it's the proper way to play the game
I could say that I enjoy seeing how many times I can roll around hyrule field in a certain amount of time but uh that doesn't mean that's the way it's supposed to be played
basically what you like doing ≠ the point of the game

I'm sorry, I thought the point of the game was to HAVE FUN.
If people aren't having fun with whatever that is at the moment, they can rtv or leave. It's not like there's a server shortage.

We're still in a holding pattern, I guess. Rambo was the de facto leader of the idea, but he's off causing shenanigans with Bonzai.
I got an offer to scrim as well, so I guess.. You know, what the hell.

I don't have a lot of time to play to begin with. If I have to spend time downloading maps, sitting through arena, and going through the motions in a 6v6 match (TF2 is meant to be played with more people in that than most circumstances), then I jump ship and head to another server. Sure, melee only with steam community friends is fun every now and then, but I'd rather just play a regular game most of the time.
Also, custom maps tend to suck a lot of the time. Not all, but most, especially those that feature a gimmick that gets old after about three minutes.

When you add people on the forums, you got me, Clefairy, and Donut. That's six right there....
...now we just need 6 more people, haha.
[Edit:]
Bonzai and Rambo would still be up for it, I'm assuming. If Action Hawk ever got online, he'd undoubtedly be up for it. Just sayin'.

ES's server is pretty fail. The ship combat feels pretty broken too, and the general combat is terrible.
However, it's come to my attention that Tribes 2 is now free, which excelled in all of these. You can download it from http://tribesnext.com/
For those not familiar with the game, here's a quick youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR3Ftt07mDQ
The game features various vehicles, team play, various game modes, and large player counts. I think it could be fun for a night or two :<

There's been a bit of confusion, sorry about that. I'd received an invitation to scrim from Loghead, you'd be playing under the lions banner in that case. To avoid confusion, hit me up on steam if you're interested in that. As for the OCR scrim, I'll run back over the thread in a minute and contact everyone who said they were interested. 17 people! Highlander might be feasible after all. Despite that, for simplicity's sake I'd like to open with a standard 6v6. As a general rule I'll try to schedule two weeks ahead of time, but with this being the premiere we'll shoot for one.

Post if neither of these fit for you and I'll see what I can work up. Also if the non-posting people can be contacted regarding availability, that'd be great. Highlander is 12vs12, only one class per team per player. So youd have one soldier, one demoman, etc. Pretty much a class restriction of one.

If you simply have a preference for one or the other, that's fine too. Any open slots will be first come, first serve. I haven't decided if I want to play yet, we'll see how it goes.
The format is 6v6, two class limit except medic and demoman, which are one each. This means you'll see a lot of that 2-soldier, 2-scout, etc. setup, but once one side gains the advantage that changes. Comp teams will often switch out scouts for heavy/engineer when holding last point, for example. Or let the other side get comfortable, then oops! backstab on your medic.

Kiyobi, it depends. We'd need 24 people to do two entirely seperate scrims, so there will be overlap. That said, I will give people who didn't play Thursday priority on Sunday.
--
I really don't see what the big deal is about Follower. It's been on the server a long time, and anybody who's a regular has played it. Especially now. If they'd like to play it again, it's in the nominate menu, same as ever.
Personally I'd like to see 5CP maps cut out of rotation, with the possible exception of Granary. The gameplay is really stale; there's an initial back-and-forth for midfield, then a slow, inexorable march into enemy territory. The losing team digs in their heels, and when the sentries go down it's over. If the sentries don't go down, we deathmatch in spurts for fifteen minutes, go to sudden death, then do all of it again. Sound familiar?
Sure, turnarounds happen, but TF2 is designed as such that the winning team tends to keep on winning. When the teams are stacked, which happens fairly often, this gets taken to extremes. Purely illustrative example: the wee hours of the morning yesterday, Lumpy and me against Vahn and... I forget who, on Granary. We got our asses kicked probably 20 times in 25 minutes.

I had assumed it would be FTF against all comers, but with the way you've splintered recently that's probably not possible.
Regarding maps, it'll probably depend on who has to leave earliest, but 3 seems like a nice round number to me. We'll start with 5CP, either Granary, Fastlane or Freight. Gravel Pit will follow that, and if time allows we'll finish off with Turbine.

I think that if all of FTF could play, we'd have...Lumpy, Joseki, me, Bleck, D-Lux. So, that's 5 total. As you say, not quite enough.
Also, I just found this for anyone who's interested: it is a good deal of TF2 icons blown up and fixed to be backgrounds for your desktop. Very sleek looking, minimalist wallpapers.

[Edit:]
And meatball. So I suppose if we all could make it on one day we could do the FTF vs thing, but I don't think we'll all be able to make it.

Hey guys! First of all I'd like to say that I love your TF2 server. The regular players are always entertaining and fun to play with and so far I haven't had any real bad experiences there with other players. In fact, I play fairly regularly with the OCR members such as Bahamut, Chadly, Hish, Rambo, Scytheful and others.
I was just playing as usual the other day when I noticed the time and logged of for the night. I came back today, 7/20/09, and found that my steam ID has apparently been banned from the server. Naturally I've been sitting around scratching my head trying to imagine why; as far as I know I've never stepped on any toes or started any conflicts with other players so I'm pretty well in the dark as to why.
So if there is some legitimate reason I was kicked I would very much appreciate knowing what that reason is and if this is some sort of mix up I would greatly appreciate allowance back in. Either way, I hope to see some of you guys around again soon.

Holy crap, this Thursday? I won't be able to make it on Thursday, I'll be out of town.
And scribble a "maybe" for Sunday. My poor lappy hasn't been handling TF2 very well for the past week, to the point of unplayability. I dunno how else to lighten the load on my poor graphics card, everything's on the lowest setting and I'm still dropping to 5-10 frames.

So, I went AFK for a long time earlier today and came home to discover a nice little surprise waiting for me via Steam chat.
Also, Joseki will be able to play Thursday, so the whole FTF vs thing might kinda work out, as we apparently picked up another person.
[FTF] Hoseke: Hey I think I'm gonna make it on thursday. I just found out I don't have to work.
[FTF] Hoseke: Gaar at least set your status to away if you're AFK....
[FTF] Hoseke: Now I feel like a tool
[FTF] Hoseke: OVER THE INTERNET!
[FTF] Hoseke: I mean, it's not like anyone cares...
[FTF] Hoseke: About this or about me...
[FTF] Hoseke: /wrists
[FTF] Hoseke: So yeah. I guess I'll just talk to myself until you get back.
[FTF] Hoseke: So, Chris, how was your day?
[FTF] Hoseke: Oh, it was great, Chris! Except for the fact that I think I might be a supervillian.
[FTF] Hoseke: O RLY? Why do you think so?
[FTF] Hoseke: Well, I saw some guy being an asshole to some old lady, and my first instinct was to strap him to a table and fire lazers at his crotch.
[FTF] Hoseke: Oh really? What did you wind up doing?
[FTF] Hoseke: Well, I settled for shoving a small bomb into his mouth and taping his gob shut.
[FTF] Hoseke: Wow! That sounds like it was unpleasant!
[FTF] Hoseke: Oh my, yes. The tape got stuck to my arm while I was sticking it to him and it pulled a lot of the hair out. I think I'm going to be okay, though.
[FTF] Hoseke: So what happened to that guy?
[FTF] Hoseke: Well, after a while I got bored, as I'm prone to do, so I pushed the detonator. I ruined a perfectly good lab coat / goggles combo. Gut stains are really hard to wash out, you know.
[FTF] Hoseke: I know what you mean. I recently had to trash my favorite lab coat and pair of goggles for that same reason.
[FTF] Hoseke: So, anyway, later on that day I had an extremely strong urge to hijack a nuke and hold the world ransom.
[FTF] Hoseke: For one million dollars?
[FTF] Hoseke: How did you guess?! It's like you're in my head! Anyway, shortly after I discovered it was just gas.
[FTF] Hoseke: Oh wow! That must have been one hell of a gas attack! Did you take Gas-X?
[FTF] Hoseke: Nah. I just let it ride. We supervillians need pain in our lives so we have an excuse to blow shit up.
[FTF] Hoseke: So what happened next?
[FTF] Hoseke: I'll get to it! God damn, you talk a lot. Anyways, when I got to work, my manager was being a dickbag to me so I stabbed him in the face with a salad fork.
[FTF] Hoseke: Jeebus! Did he bleed a lot?
[FTF] Hoseke: Not really. All he did was roll around on the floor and conjecture that my mother was a prostitute, using a flurry of artful and vulgar phrases.
[FTF] Hoseke: Did you get fired?
[FTF] Hoseke: No. He tried to fire me, but I finished him off with the soup ladel before he could.
[FTF] Hoseke: So what happened next?
[FTF] Hoseke: Well, after stuffing his corpse underneath the refrigerator, I worked the rest of my shift killing only the bare minimum. Uh, two teenagers were being a bit too loud, so I headbutted them both and tossed them out the window.
[FTF] Hoseke: You're crazy!
[FTF] Hoseke: I get that a lot. So, anyway, after my shift ended I came home and now I'm talking to myself OVAR TEH INTERWEBZ!
[FTF] Hoseke: Chris, I think you might be what is commonly referred to as a lunatic.
[FTF] Hoseke: I think you might be right about that. I do like the moon.
[FTF] Hoseke: No, Chris. A lunatic, not lunartic. God, you're dumb.
[FTF] Hoseke: Your mom!
[FTF] Hoseke: She's your mom too, idiot!
[FTF] Hoseke: Why you! COME HERE!
[FTF] Hoseke: OW! OW! NO BITING GOD DAMMIT
[FTF] Hoseke: NO NOT THE EARS! AGH!
[FTF] Hoseke: AAAAAAGGGH! MY EYE! YOU BIT MY EYE!

[FTF] Hoseke: No! NO! DON'T TICKLE! DON'T TICKLE! HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Anyway. I only suggested that format because that's just what's done in scrims; 'ringers' from other teams/clans aren't generally effective. If people are really that opposed to it, I can draw lots or straws or whatever and assign the teams myself.

EDIT: From TF2Wiki:
Spies can destroy their own sappers with the console command "destroy 4" (0-3 correspond to engineer buildings). In most situations this is an undesirable and counterproductive tactic; but it can be useful for drawing an engineer away from his nest, particularly now that spies can take enemy teleporters. It can also be used to refill your cloak bar by picking up broken sapper parts.
This could take spy mind games to a whole new level.

My brother told me something very surprising about Otakon...
There were a lot of spies. Everywhere. Including one with a Jesus mask. And there were other classes, though he never saw a demoman.
Spies destroying their own sappers... I suppose you could sap something for one second, destroy the sapper and confuse the crap outta the engineer. Huh... I'm just not sure what you could with that ability.

BLU Spy holding hands with a RED female Medic.
So... the RED Scout's mom is a Medic?
I also witnessed a Heavy get backstabbed, a Demoman get pissdrunk, and an Engineer dominating everyone with a level 1 sentry.

If so, sounds like a video card issue.
If not, it could be anything. Reseat the RAM first (take it out and put it back in). If that fails, take out the battery (looks like a large watch battery) on the motherboard for 15 seconds and put it back in. Make sure you ground yourself before touching anything.

Read this on reddit...
Manhunt is played with a RED team of Engineers, that have the set-up period (60 seconds) to build a level one sentry and a single Spy on the BLU team, going around sapping/stabing the engineers. Engineers, do not upgrade your sentries past level 1. You may however build dispensers and teleporters.
When the spy makes a kill, that person must then join his team as a spy. This is continued until no engineers on BLU are left. The last engineer alive will get to be the starter spy for the next round.

We'd have to wait for someone able to change the server settings for it to work, though, to get rid of autobalance and whatnot.

on irc yesterday, i made a suggestion for a new gametype in which one team is all engineers, and they get like a minute or so to set up, and the other team has ridiculously high distance falloff on their damage, but has very low respawn times. it was inspired by the final scene of the "meet the engineer" video, during which 20 or 30 members of the blue team are zerging towards the engineer's campfire. DarkeSword came up with a very ingenious name for the gametype, "SentryBreaker." Obviously it needs to be worked out a bit more, but I think if we could come up with some bounds, we could maybe try to figure out some SM scripting and make it happen! or not... your post, prophet, is what reminded me of it :)
Clefairy
07-24-2009, 02:55 PM
I'm reasonably sure you would need to remove the demoman and the sniper (or at least headshots)entirely to make that work. Nades have no falloff at all, and stickies are only subject to it for 5 seconds. The other thing that jumps out at me as being a problem is that all weapons do 100% damage to buildings, regardless of distance. Spread is the only thing that cripples non-explosive classes' ability to deal with them at long range.
Damage percentiles are a huge part of the game's mechanics, though, so it's safe to assume they're not hard-coded. Totally viable.
Hm... Not sure how you'd map for it. The only two designs that come to mind are King of the Hill and Red Rover.

Research and Development in particular gets my recommendation, with MINERVA, Powerstation 17 and Joutomaa following closely behind.

So, we've been running through the same mapcycle for a good while now, and if the above doesn't make my position clear, I'm pretty tired of it. I love this game, I really do; probably too much, by some standards. But I'm also prepared to let it grow and change into something different, because you know what happens to things that don't? They get old and die. Look at all the games on your shelf you never play anymore if you want proof.
The updates do a lot to that end, but we're approaching the end of that cycle. And it seems rather unlikely to me that we'll see the same level of support and content from Valve once every class has an unlock set. It's possible, just unlikely.
I seem to have lost my train of thought, so I'll just open the floor to discussion. I've posted my ideas for a new mapcycle, what are yours.

alternatively, change the server to "OCReMix Goldrush/Dustbowl 24/7 | Alltalk" :V
I really don't have a problem with the "overplayed" maps. Some people (coughbleckcough) whine that "no one knows how to play these maps but they play them ALL THE TIME," but the truth is "no one knows how to play TF2 but they play it ALL THE TIME." Of course saying that is a kneejerk reaction to ending up with terrible team balance/management on either side. We end up with the same problems on ANY map, and perfectly balanced teams would be dumb because most matches would stalemate or go to SD, or end up in a Red win for Assault/PL.
I think people need to ditch the squeamishness of custom maps... a less popular server wouldn't be so bad IMO, because it seems the major point of contention that I have (as well as a few other folks) are the absolutely terrible public gamers. Now that doesn't mean I hate pubbies, but it is extremely frustrating when someone doesn't understand some of the core elements of class playstyle, like flanking as a pyro instead of running head-long into the fray. Aside from that, I play on the OCR server because I know the majority of guys who play there, either from IRC & MAGFest or from them playing there regularly, having the pubbies around to fill out the team numbers is just a bit of a bonus even though it can be maddening.
Err... I got sidetracked. WRT custom maps, people say "but they empty out the server!" but generally I find that the more regulars that stay to play on a custom, the more pubs will filter in (although this is not always the case). It's a bit of a cascade effect, if a map is actually good and fun, with a decent-sized handful of regulars, the map will quickly become popular with semi- and non-regular players. Frontier is a great example, I've seen a few 24/25 games on it with a good 50-60% regulars on board. BUT!! we've gotta be certain that people actually LIKE the customs that are selected, it seems lately that while pl_waste gets a decent population, people generally don't like the map because of a few minor issues that balloon quickly, such as the pacing effect of capping the 4th point extending the defensive respawn timer too much, while the cart speed is incredibly fast.
As an aside, I'm guilty of "not caring" about 2fort/turbine matches like a few people, but I'm contemplating considering people that go out of their way to be useless to be trolls. Generally talking about demo "pimp walkers" and spycrabs that detract from their team, people who are at least playing team deathmatch are being a bit of a credit. The whole "it's 2fort/turbine, we never take it seriously" schtick is getting old and when the maps are played as intended the games can be pretty intense. People whine about the turtley nature of CTF maps, but IMO that's just a part of the metagame that they're going to have to work around; sentry farms are never invincible and using some of the game's "features" (such as heavy cornering) can change the tide quite quickly, especially when coupled with spy sapping, invuln ubers, and winbombs.
That brings me to another issue, Alltalk/Deadtalk. Personally I enjoy the alltalk and friendly nature of the OCR server (even though I'm just a jerk that trolls people :(((((((((((((( and stopping is hard it is so tempting) but sometimes I'd like to get in some team-talk games. Then it occurred to me, Wish I Could Shoot has a server for [ZUZ] (and with rambo's financial contributions, [lions]) matches that is normally using a vanilla configuration. So why don't those of us who want to play some team-talk games just go play there once in a while? I'm not going to post the IP publicly out of respect, but if you're on my friend list you should join when I'm playing there, or just ask in the steam chat.

I agree with mostly everything garian just said
except
I don't think he pays attention to how bad people suddenly become whenever they play on Dustbowl
'guys all we need to do is take down that sentry'
'OKAY I GUESS I'LL SPEND THE NEXT TWENTY MINUTES RUNNING INTO IT REPEATEDLY EXCEPT FOR WHEN THERE IS AN UBER BECAUSE THEN I WILL EITHER BE RUNNING AROUND SPAWN TRYING TO KILL ONE BLOODY SPY OR I WILL JUST BE DEAD'
this applies to basically everybody who has ever played on the OCR server including all the good players and myself

some things
Pretty much every attack/defend map suffers from this problem to some degree. Dustbowl is just the worst example; I like to think it's the ridiculous number of bottlenecks.
Every single entrance into Red's territory on the map is either a tightly enclosed space, or a massively exploitable choke point. The area around Dustbowl 3-1 is the worst thing Valve has ever designed, in my opinion; there are good spots for at least 3 sentries, which already poses a significant challenge to an unco-ordinated team. Once 4 or more go up, unless blu is smart enough to get two ubered demos going, with escorts to negate red pyros' airblast, it's game fucking over.
It genuinely boggles my mind as to how someone who has played TF2 for any significant length of time can find Dustbowl fun. And of course it follows that they can't explain it, since about 85% of the internet utterly fails at critical thinking.

It depends on what the other people on RED are doing. If they aren't constantly watching the guns, 1 or more BLU Spies can start sapping them, leaving them vulnerable to Heavies and Soldiers. This is far more likely if BLU is currently trying to push (with or without an uber), as the other teammates usually aren't watching the guns.
Depending on how the guns are set up, a Scout may use Bonk to get past the sentries to the point (I've personally done this).
Spies and Scouts together can actually be a pretty good scoring team.
Edit: To beat someone to the punch, as a Spy, you sneak through when your team isn't currently pushing, because the enemy probably isn't going to be firing into blank space.
Also, there's only one spot where a gun can be placed on 3-1 where a Spy can't reach it.
Edit 2: No, my beef with Dustbowl is that we play it All. The. Time.

I definitely don't care about capturing the flag on 2fort/turbine matches. 2fort simply because I think it's a bad map and I pretty much just do stupid things [Edit:] (not spycrab the entire time, but try out new things, such as playing my god awful sniper) the entire round and turbine because I think playing defense is too much fun.
Pub players can be aggravating, but I can't really complain, since I only joined like a month or two before I started playing there. What really does bother me, though, is asshole pub players. Earlier today there were two guys on the server who just bitched and moaned about Red rolling Blu. I said that the teams weren't imbalanced and that we (Blu) just needed a medic. We got one...and then they bitched about Blu rolling Red. Ele and one of them started arguing and it escalated to the point of annoyance.
I'm fine with pub players, good or bad, until they start being assholes. I'd take a bad pubbie who isn't a dick over an all star player who is.
I honestly believe that Dustbowl would be a pretty decent map if Engineers were not allowed.
(Not actually suggesting that, simply saying that sentry farms, while not completely invincible, are pretty damn aggravating, ESPECIALLY on Dustbowl.)

I remember being part of a 2 Spy/demoman uber set that took down 4 sentries on Dustbowl 2-2 before. So no, it's not impossible.
To my knowledge, this wasn't coordinated as much as it was being in the right place at the right time.

Man...that Goldrush match was amazing. I recorded most of it (I didn't record the beginning of the Huntsman defense. Sorry guys.) and have put it all into a .7z file for your viewing pleasure. You'll need the most excellent 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) to get into the archive. If you are for some reason against installing it, I'll put it in a .rar or something for ya. The final file size is roughly 22 MB.
The files are named in a way that it's pretty easy to tell what came first, second, and third as long as you know that our turn on offense came before defense. 2fort was immediately afterwards and I regretably did not record all of that either. In fact, the 2fort demo isn't terribly interesting unless you're tired, haha.
The demos are all from my perspective and, thankfully, without my voice. You can just ad-lib whatever you think I should be saying when you see the little '!' symbol on the right.

Demo's record your game experience.
To Play a Demo someone Recorded:
1) put the .dem file in your Steam\steamapps\**username**\team fortress 2\tf
2)Launch tf2.
3)Hit ~ to access the console. (If it doesn't work enable dev console in options->multiplayer->advanced)
3) Type playdemo theDemoName
4)After loading, it should start playing.
5)To speedup or slowdown the demo: type demoui in the console.
To Record a Demo)
1)Hit ~ to access the console.
2) Type record theNameYouWant
3) To Stop recording: type stop in the console.
4) It is now in your Steam\steamapps\**username**\team fortress 2\tf
Most recordings are only First Person. And each Major update breaks all the demos.
Fancy server demos are if you are awesome and use SourceTV on your own server.
Good news is Valve is trying to get better demo support. Plans include requesting the server to give you a full server recording of your past life and such

I was going to update some maps tonight that have new versions, but it turns out that fpsbanana is down (http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.fpsbanana.com), and certain maps with new versions (coughpl_dbheightscough) don't have them accessible anywhere else without needing some u/p bullshit.
pl_cashworks was updated to rc2 (http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=1718). I *highly* suggest you download this in advance, as cashworks is huge (41.1MB compressed).
Also, just to churn things up a bit, I implemented the mapcycle Clefairy suggested a few pages back.

It's fun to play when there aren't many people and you are a spy.
Other than that yeah, not very fun on a full server.
also why does zircon have admins he never plays. give me admins i play lots more than him!!!

Hmm. I'm not able to download the Hoodoo map for some reason.
I'm thinking other people had that problem too considering the server went from like 22 people to 0 in a matter of seconds.

Here's confirming that I had the same issue, though I could have sworn that I'd downloaded Hoodoo a while back, when it was first "featured". I wonder what's causing this... Here's the error:
"Missing map maps/pl_hoodoo.bsp, disconnecting"
In other news, I've begun text-commentating while spectating. Hope everyone's enjoying it. :D

Hoodoo is included in TF2 as of the Spy/Sniper update... wait, maybe the version in the mapcycle has the wrong name...
Yup, that was it. We had two versions of hoodoo on the server, and the mapcycle was using the wrong one. I've deleted the old one, fixed the mapcycle, and restarted the server.

I just ignored that, because Soldiers always get lots of crits. I'm convinced that the rocket launcher has a higher crit rate because of its slow speed.
No, I just got critted quite a bit on turbine, and literally half the time (6/12) on fastlane earlier. I rage quit after three single-hit crit kills in a row... by single-hit I mean literally 3 shots were taken at me to kill me 3 times: 2 with a Fire Axe and one with a rocket.

the crit rate for everything is the same except for melee crits
the only way you could change the crit rate is by a crits chance plugin (i know ive used it) and looking at the cvars of the ocr server i dont see that plugin installed so it should be the normal rate
ive seen people crit hacking, but with that every shot they fire is a crit, and its really easy to pick out and ban for so i doubt thats whats happening, but maybe at some point tonight ill hop on the server and see if i notice anything suspicious
crit fire
one of MANY reasons you should never use the backburner
crit fire is a big deal (although obviously not if crits are off)

So, we tried a new map tonight: cp_furnace_b3 (http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=978).
It's a Gravelpit style A and B, then C map.
It was actually pretty fun!
It's currently replaced arena_storm_b1c (which has been rtved every time it's come up or votenextmapped when people notice it's coming up) on the rotation.
Tomorrow when no one's on, I need to move it to a different spot. Right now, it directly follows Gravelpit, and the two of them are a bit too similar to be next to each other.

I did a few other map updates:
Updated pl_dbheights to b5 (http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/101017) now that fpsbanana is working again. Section 3 point 1 has been changed quite a bit... the spawn room appears to have been moved and rotated 90 degrees left so that the cart takes a Waluigi L shape to where point A usually is on cp_dustbowl: pic (http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/screens/101017?img=http://temple.fpsbanana.com/ss/maps/101017b.jpg). This section used to have the spawn where it normally is, but did a U shape through a new area to where point A was. There's been a few other changes, such as the cart now routing down the tunnel near the end of section 2 (pic (http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/screens/101017?img=http://temple.fpsbanana.com/ss/maps/101017c.jpg)), and defense getting a shorter respawn time. If you don't download it in advance, it's an 11.9 MB download.
Added cp_waste (http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=2073) to the server. It's the control point version of pl_waste. If you don't download it in advance, it's an 18.1 MB download.
Also, if you opt not to download cp_furnace_b3 in advance, it's a 20.8 MB download.

But try killing five someones in a group, say on a point, before one of them manages a solid shot to blow you to pieces. When dealing with multiple enemies at once (as I usually do as a Pyro), anything that kills them faster is preferable to being blown up.

By the way, something is odd with Arena maps at the moment. You can choose your team when joining, and none of the arena rules apply (i.e. teams don't autobalance, crits are still on). I was told that this was done to play that one spies vs. pyro game...

if youve got tunnelvision OH LOOK ITS A BACK IM GONNA GO FOR IT EASY KILL good chance a soldier will see that youre holding the roflbackburner and take you out easily (uh if youre concerned about being blown up im pretty sure the backburner is NOT the choice you want)
if its on the cart, you can take out pretty much everyone on it unless there are like 6+ people with the flamethrower rather easily as long as you actually use your head

I'm with atmuh on this one -- if you're really concerned about getting behind people, play spy. Pyro's AB gives him so much more utility it's a joke to use the BB in anything but very special situations.

I can't give you twenty, but I can give you a few
Airblasting people off of a control point rather than trying to burn them can win you the game.
Its one of, if not THE best defense against an uber attack.
You can save your teammates when they're on fire so they don't have to retreat for health.
You can defend sentries from spies AND demo's/soldiers rather than just spies.
Where the backburner is just good for ambushing from behind.

well no ive got pretty good aim with the sandman but chances are the medic will be well protected by the whoever it is he's ubering so i go for that person instead
either way the stun usually wont last the whole uber and if the medic is using the click once to heal he'll continue to uber whoever he's ubering even while stunned, and if the heavy/demo/pyro is sitting there taking out a sentry that stun isnt doing much

Not to say I'm getting bored of it (because I still enjoy people attempting to justify the backburner), simply that we know where the line is drawn: the majority of people here prefer the normal flamethrower while a few like the backburner. Neither side is going to convince the other that they're the superior one.

WHY THE FLAMETHROWER IS SUPERIOR TO THE BACKBURNER
I'll start off with 1v1 situations against the 5 primary attack classes.
Scout - This really doesn't matter. If the scout is good, you're screwed no matter what. If he's bad, he's an easy W+M1 with either weapon.
Pyro - Backburner vs Backburner is usually just two pyros W+M1ing into each other with both trying to get a lucky back crit while spinning around the other. Flamethrower vs. Flamethrower really just depends on which one knows what he's doing. Flamethrower vs. Backburner will almost always end in favor of the pyro with the flamethrower, because he can very easily poof the other pyro and switch to the shotgun (or flaregun, but your aim had better be good) and finish him off while he's trying to get his bearings from being pushed into the air.
Soldier - Ok this one is obvious, but from someone who plays a lot of soldier, literally the first thing any soldier does when he sees a pyro is look at what he's holding. If I see a backburner, I smile and take care of the pyro with two easy rockets. If I see the flamethrower, I know I'm gonna have to be careful. A good soldier will still probably win, but the pyro will at least get the soldier to be more careful and possibly just retreat.
Demo - Another one that's pretty easy. A decent demo will throw a few easy pipes if he sees that the pyro will have no way to reflect them. If you've got the flamethrower you can just poof everything as you W+M1 him since he's a lot slower.
Heavy - One of the few times that you might wish you had the backburner is when you get behind a (really dumb) heavy medic combo that never turns around, because you can take them both out quickly. But if they're that dumb the regular flames should be just as effective. When facing a heavy 1v1, the pyro will almost always lose if the heavy sees him coming. You have the opportunity, if you have the flamethrower, to poof him and bolt out if you're close enough, and also circle-strafing a heavy works a lot more than it should, with either weapon.
As mentioned earlier, poofing people off a point or sitting like an idiot and poofing an uber can be ridiculously effective, and stopping an uber can be game breaking. The only uber that can get through a poofing pyro easily is a heavy uber, since you can easily kill the pyro. The rest are literally stopped by a poofing pyro.
Something that was added with the sniper/spy update that people overlooked was the ability to change poofed objects into crits when kritzed. This turns the pyro into a viable kritz target (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYQJmVTa7Mw). One of these days I'll compile a lot more of my kritz pyro ubers into a real video, as this one was just a test of how to post stuff on youtube.
Poofing makes the axtinguisher more effective.
Oh hey I forgot something! As was mentioned you can put out people on fire now. While this may seem like a nice thing to do sitting behind the lines and extinguishing whoever needs it, it also makes the medic pyro much more effective. As a medic I love following a poof pyro, as whenever something gets too close to me the pyro can poof him away. I feel a lot more protected. What's most important, when I'm on fire, he turns around and puts me out. This is a BIG DEAL. Burning to death as a medic is ANNOYING.
Oh yeah, and critfire. Critfire is the nicest surprise :).
I probably forgot stuff so if I think of more I'll add it later!!
Lumpy

A spy can only get one person at a time. If there are three or more then a backburner would be better than the average spy. I guess some spies could handle a lot of enemies though.
