View Full Version : Mega Man Legends = Laputa Castle in the Sky?

Is it just me, or does the Megaman Legends series seem eerily similar to the anime masterpiece: Laputa: Castle In the Sky?

I just saw it, and it seems to have influenced the game in nearly everything, including story, creatures, and even characters.

I saw that there was a role reversal, with Pazu being an influencing on roll, and Sheeta influencing Megaman to a degree. the pirate family in Laputa is extremely similar to the Bonne family in Legends. and I swear one of the enemies in Legends is exactly like the robots in from Laputa.
http://rookery1.viary.com/storage/523000/523305_f2b1_550x900.jpg(the two robots on the bottom are the ones from laputa.)

I love how there is reference in the game to such a great movie, but it's borderline plagiarism at times.

Did anyone else notice that?

You never have? It's a classic bit of animation. Early Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli works are some of the better films out there.

yes, and the newer stuff still has it's charm.

Oh, I'm not saying it doesn't! Most of the Ghibli/Miyazaki stuff is good in general. I just have a slight fondness for the older stuff more.

Part of Howl's Moving Castle's soundtrack makes up my Homeworld playlist for LAN games.

cool!

I understand the feeling for the older stuff. the are the ones that have had plenty of time to seep into popular culture more deeply and have a greater influence. (it is surprising how much they actually influenced pop culture without us noticing.)

It's kind of weird to have this pointed out, because I saw Laputa and played Legends ages ago, and Laputa is one of my favorite movies of all time, and Legends is one of my favorite games. Looking back on it now, I see the parallels that you're drawing, and it makes a lot of sense. Very interesting.

If Mega Man Legends doesn't apply, then Skies of Arcadia sure as hell does.

Ah, another thread involving the great Joker/Mark Hamil.
Yes, Castle In The Sky features Mark Hamil as a voice of one of the main characters. Go get it.
As for MML, I've never played.

Indeed! I semi-recently got the Misadventures of Tron Bonne, hoping it would make me happier. It really didn't.

Here's an off-topic(har har) question then: What DOES belong in off-topic?

Now I'll have to give this Laputa a view. Hurray for free advertising.

And this invokes the fact that Capcom will never make such a thing. Like a Breath of Fire 6. Sigh. Dragon Quarter was so good too.

I think this is the first time I have ever seen a thread moved OUT of off topic.

Anyway; I miss Mega-man Legends.

I'll have to try this Mega Man Legends game. What system is it for?

For anyone who said they have a strong fondness for Miyazaki's earlier works. I don't know. I find myself holding Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle as his best works, and they were also his last three to be released on US soil.

Not say I am not fond of his other works, but those to me were the pinnacle of his work. Of course, the only one I've yet to see is Nausicaa, so I don't count that in my judging.

According to GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/data/928758.html), it came out in Japan in '05, was re-released in '06 as a special edition (also in Japan) but is still unreleased in any other region.

Nausicaa is entirely missable. Last night I saw the only remaining one I haven't seen, Porco Rosso, which was awesome. But still mononoke and spirited away remain my favorites.

nausicaa is the first one they made, I believe.

for a first attempt, it was excellent, and even in comparison, it has a special place in my heart.

Laputa from the movie was taken from the classic literature: gulliver's tales. Probably intentional as well, either the author's distaste of the spanish, or to represent the nature of the island.

Wikipedia's thoughts exactly. I agree with the author that Spanish is a distasteful language.
Did you know that I took Spanish II twice? And passed both times? Yeah, I passed with a C in 9th grade, without actually learning a damn thing, and then I was sent to a private school for 10th grade where students needed 3 years of a foreign language to graduate, and I figured Spanish 3 would kill me so I retook spanish 2 and would then move on to spanish 3. That class was ridiculous, and I ended up getting expelled from that school. For breaking a vending machine. And I got sent to another school which required 2 years of spanish so yeah spanish sucks the whole world needs to learn english.

try to stay on subject, this is at least an interesting thread.

Im guessing lots of anime and game designers derived inspiration from this film.

This guy is the pirate airships mechanic. I always thought Dr Robotnik's character was original, but apparently not.

The entire pirate family in MML is based off these guys, I mean, a bunch of idiots taking commands from their "mother" In a big airship with a skull logo? Definitely.

HA! Never noticed that before...

The thing I found most interesting about that film were those little one man aircraft that had wings like a dragonfly's... I'm surprised I haven't seen that ripped off anywhere yet.
